VMM PEOPLE The people who help bring the visions and mission of the Museum to life!

FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Board of Trustees working with the Executive Director and staff have been effective throughout 2016 in further increasing the profile of the VMM. The year began with the St Roch wheelhouse simulator exhibit at the Vancouver International Boat Show in January where the Museum was honoured with the “Judges Award. A total of about 2500 people enjoyed piloting the St Roch through the sea full of icebergs in the Arctic. The wonderful simulation also resulted in international recognition for the Centre for Digital media whose great work created a very real experience. A flood in February due to a faulty valve dampened progress for a short time but Ken and his staff worked diligently to ensure the well being of the building and the artifacts. Extensive repairs were completed over the next few months. The Board of Trustees has been much impressed by the work involved in updating the computers and the record keeping by the installation of iCloud 365. Finance and Administration manager Kelina Kwan and our Board Treasurer Dave Dungey spent many

hours creating a much more modern and effective financial reporting program. The Board has become more involved in the Strategic planning process with the assistance of an expert facilitator. After working on the vision and mission the Trustees turned their attention to the decisions necessary for planning the future of the VMM. The process will continue in 2017. A greater emphasis has been placed on working with Government, First Nations and other institutions such as Museum of Vancouver and Royal B.C. Museum. I am confident that the collaborative effort will work for the success of all parties including particularly those in Vanier Park. Finally, I wish to express our great thanks to supporters of the VMM as listed in the annual report. We specifically acknowledge the City of Vancouver, the B.C. Arts Council, One Oceans Expeditions, and our numerous donors including the Washington and TK Foundations. PETER BERNARD, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

FROM THE DIRECTOR It has been an exceptional few years to be involved with the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Exciting discoveries were made in the high Arctic, renewed energy at the local and regional level was advanced, and expansion of the VMM’s reach and influence realized. VMM outreach programs saw staff on the first large cruise ship transiting the Northwest Passage and on expedition cruise ships, as well as at local maritime festivals, the Vancouver Boat show and multiple presentations to local groups. New exhibits launched and new partnerships forged. This past year marks many milestones within the VMM. Currently exhibitions are travelling on 4 cruise ships plying international waters, we are cooperating with other institutions from a wide variety of backgrounds on a number of exciting projects. Our work within the Diplomatic community has seen very successful TK exhibits launched. The VMM worked closely with NOAA and the University of Rhode Island – Inner Space Center (School of Oceanography) on the successful search for the Coast Trader. A Japanese submarine, as it turns out, torpedoed this vessel in 1942 within Canadian waters. The find rewrote the maritime history of the British Columbia coast. Within our walls the reworking of admin systems, accommodation, policies and procedures were undertaken. Enhanced Wi-Fi and general IT upgrades have positioned the VMM to better serve the public and permitted high-end digital exhibits to be launched. One of the most inspiring events was a renewed and revised Vision and Mission from the Board of Directors at the VMM. The Vision and Mission is clear, concise and allowed my office to generate personal and institutional commitments to our community, partners, supports, stakeholders and friends. Vision To be a world-leading maritime museum and heritage centre. Mission To be a centre for dialogue, education, research,

artistic expression and experience regarding the maritime heritage of the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. In a cascading exercise driven from the Vision and Mission my office stepped forward and made the following commitments. Commitment Our commitment to you is that VMM will: • Be a centre for conversation, research and knowledge about the Pacific and Arctic Oceans and their related waterways • Tell honest stories of the people, the vessels and the diverse maritime heritage of these waterways • Build partnerships with interested organizations, to engage our diverse community, stakeholders and visitors with inclusive, educational and experiential events • Conform to the highest ethical, legal, industry and fiduciary standards • Ensure that the trust and confidence of the community, individuals, institutions and industry is maintained and nurtured • Deliver inclusive opportunities for entertainment, education, exploration and to showcase artistic expression have been introduced; harmonized systems, measures, reporting policies established; and sound business tools are in place. These commitments will be the cornerstone of the

VMM and the VMM office of the Executive Director as we move towards the future. Part of the future of the VMM is the final alignment, installation and placement of key personnel within the leadership position. Late last fall I asked the Board of Directors to begin an international search for a new Executive Director. Indeed, I feel the succession planning is a key part of any business plan advanced by an Executive Director. The time had come. I anticipate that this process will come to a successful conclusion in the spring of 2017. It has been a tremendous honour to be associated with the institution as the Executive Director. I anticipate moving into the position of “Government and Industry Liaison”. In this position I will be

working ad hoc with the new Executive Director and the Board to ensure a significant transition period and ongoing continuity of purpose. I plan to sail the Northwest Passage during the summer of 2017 and move onto some other maritime related adventure activities in the immediate future. Stay tuned… The VMM and the St. Roch will always remain a significant part of my life’s journey. For that I am very grateful. Thank you KENNETH K. BURTON, M.O.M. DIRECTOR OF THE VANCOUVER MARITIME MUSEUM

PUBLIC EVENTS The Museum offers a wide range of programs for children, adults and community groups. Programs are designed to provide participants with a variety of opportunities to delve deeper into our exhibition themes and other maritime topics. Programs are facilitated by staff, volunteers, and experts in their fields. Highlights from 2016 include:

Canada Day Celebrations

Canada Day Celebration at the VMM, our free, signature annual event, had Inuit storyteller and author Michael Kusugak returning to engage families in traditional Arcticthemed tales and interpretation of Inuit artifacts. This Canada Day event almost doubled attendance from the previous year drawing 1,000 children and adults.

The Franklin Exploration

The launch of the Franklin Exploration mini-exhibit at the Museum in March provided opportunities to collaborate with Parks Canada and Franklin Network partners. Launch events included a Google Hangout for home learners, a media event, artifact interpretation, and a lecture by Marty Magne of Parks Canada. The Museum received an outreach kit with artifact replicas, which it continues to use in its museum and off-site programming. In October, the Museum hosted a special presentation by Ryan Harris, Underwater Archeologist at Parks Canada.

Summer Programming

With support of a Young Canada Works grant, VMM hired a Summer Museum Programs Assistant who developed family-friendly public programming throughout the summer. Programs included Franklin Exploration artifact interpretation on Thursday nights in July and ‘Bareknuckle Bill’ history-based theatrical interpretation on the St. Roch.

COLLECTIONS

COLLECTION REFLECTIONS - 2016 The collections department had another exciting year in 2016 beginning with the Vancouver International Boat Show in January. The VMM brought the St. Roch Wheelhouse Experience to the Boat Show where it received a special judges award and was experienced by 2700 people. In March, the VMM participated in a live Canada-wide launch of the Franklin Museum Network and unveiled the pop-up Franklin Exploration exhibit. A partnership with the CDM (Centre for Digital Media) played an important role at the VMM this year with the launch of a new interactive exhibit Anthony of the Arctic and the development of an interactive celestial navigation exhibit Orion (to be completed in 2017). These immersive displays add a new level of engagement to the museum.

vessel torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during WWII. ROVs, operated from EV Nautilus, sent live video of the wreck to the control room for analysis and simultaneously broadcast over the internet to an international audience with real time commentary from the investigation team and VMM’s curator. VMM used its video wall to live stream it inside VMM throughout the day. Building off the success of the Arctic trip in 2015, VMM staff were invited aboard two new cruise ships to deliver educational programs and present travelling exhibits. These endeavours strengthened VMM’s partnership with One Ocean Expeditions and created a new relationship on Crystal Serenity, which will allow for future educational outreach programs and exhibitions on their vessels. VMM also engaged with remote Arctic museums, libraries and visitor centres to share exhibition material (see St. Roch’s Secret Mission travelling exhibit).

In June of 2016 VMM’s curator took part in an underwater investigation led by NOAA and the Ocean Explorations Trust. The target was the wreck site of SS Coast Trader, an American merchant 11

EXHIBITIONS HARBOUR AND SHIPPING July 2016 to October 2016 TK Gallery Harbour and Shipping was established as a monthly publication detailing the news of the West Coast marine industry. Murray McLellan, president and publisher for 48 years, announced his retirement and end of publication in 2011. McLellan, an accomplished photographer, took many of the photographs used in the publication. Sadly, he passed away this year. In honour of his memory, the VMM presents a display of photographs from his collection, representing significant aspects of the local marine industry.

GHOST PASSAGES OF THE MCKENZIE SHIPYARD: Artwork by Tracy McMenenmy

‘OFFSHORE’ - FLOATING TOPOGRAPHIES PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION BY RUI NUNES

October 2016 to January 2017 TK Gallery The ‘off shore’ series is a catalog of the ships that pass beneath Vancouver’s Lions Gate bridge through the Port of Vancouver. Ships entering and leaving the harbour reflect these dual roles. The photographs present a unique aerial view of these ships, revealing the vast scale of their decks. Ships that from shore appear to be similar in shape and purpose reveal a rich variety of forms, colours, and markings from above. The large scale of the images elicit readings at multiple scales, step in close to immerse oneself in intricate mechanical details and miniature tourists, or stand back to perceive as graphic abstract compositions.

January 2016 to April 2016 TK Gallery McKenzie Barge and Marineways was a landmark along the Burrard Inlet in Deep Cove, BC; an epicenter of industrial development in the North Vancouver community since 1932. The day before the shipyard was demolished for real estate development, McMenemy captured images of the site and recovered objects representing the work done there. Ghost Passages is an artist’s resurrection of Burrard Inlet history through mixed media. She has given these objects a second chance; a renewed purpose. They act as a witness to the changing landscape and experiences of working class North Vancouver, capturing a moment, frozen in time. Ghost Passages is a blueprint for a graveyard and a resurrection of the blood, labour and loss seafarers suffered during the better part of their lives working at the shipyard.

EXHIBITIONS

ACROSS THE TOP OF THE WORLD: THE QUEST FOR THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE (TRAVELLING EXHIBITION) - AUGUST 2016 ongoing travelling exhibition For a 2nd year, VMM partnered with One Ocean Expeditions (OOE) to present the travelling version of Across the Top of the World, placing a display on OOE’s 2nd ship Akademik Iöffe. Staff went aboard late August to interpret the exhibition and present artifacts and lectures to augment the display. This exhibit is currently on three cruise ships operating worldwide.

ARCTIC ENCOUNTERS April 2016 to July 2016 TK Gallery In August 2015 VMM staff went to the Arctic to present a travelling exhibition focusing on John Franklin and European efforts to find the Northwest Passage. Staff documented their experience in the Arctic through photographs and interacted with local community members. Arctic Encounters presents unique views of the modern Northwest Passage and the people who call the Arctic their home. Photographs from Pond Inlet archives, and photographs taken by museum staff show contemporary social and environmental landscapes of Canada’s far north. This collection is now in Pond Inlet, Nunavut.

EXHIBITIONS ST. ROCH’S SECRET MISSION July 2016 to December 2016 travelling exhibition In 1940, the RCMP St. Roch departed Vancouver on a mission of sovereignty to claim the North on behalf of Canada. Research in 1991 revealed that true reason for the voyage was part of a secret government mission, combining Canadian and British forces, to occupy Greenland to secure the area against a possible invasion from German forces. A Canadian Heritage grant allowed VMM to develop this exhibit and create pop up banners they could take into the Arctic and deliver to the Library and Archives at Pond inlet. The English and French text on the banners was supplemented by booklets translated in both Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun. Prepared material was ultimately delivered to the communities of Cambridge Bay, Pond Inlet, Pangnirtung, and Iqaluit when staff visited these communities in 2016.

ANTHONY OF THE ARCTIC Main Gallery, Permanent Exhibit The second collaboration between VMM and Centre for Digital Media created an immersive, interactive underwater space within the gallery. A three-walled projection brings viewers into an underwater scene at the site of a sunken ship. From the position of a diver exploring this wreck one is guided by Anthony of the Arctic, an animated polar bear. A replica dive camera on a stand, digitally interacts with the underwater scene enabling visitors to move a light to explore and uncover hidden artifacts. A treasure-hunt mode guides visitors to discover hidden artifacts and learn how they were used on a ship. This exhibit introduces the idea of underwater archaeology and the types of artifacts found in connection with shipwrecks.

ORION & CELESTIAL NAVIGATION Main Gallery, Permanent Exhibit Orion or Ullaktut is a collaboration between the VMM and the Centre for Digital Media. One wall projection tells the Inuit myth of the Ullaktut/Orion constellation and a second is an interactive wall, which shows the movements of the stars around the North Star Polaris. Visitors will use a mounted globe to control the movement of the stars and see their relationships to one another. This will demonstrate basic celestial navigation principals used by navigators for centuries. This digital display is augmented by a physical display showing navigational artifacts and their development through history. This installation is 80% complete with the visual walls being fully operational.

FRANKLIN EXPLORATION POP-UP DISPLAY The Franklin Museum Network March 2016 St. Roch Shelter This pop-up display deals with mysteries surrounding the Franklin Expedition and sheds light on the historical context of science and exploration in 19th century. It focuses on Inuit traditional knowledge, reasons behind the fatal expedition and clues collected during initial research efforts. It allows links with contemporary research in the Arctic and methodology and progress of ongoing scientific work in the Canadian North. The portability enables participating museums to share it with their communities. The Franklin Exploration will be on display over a period of three years and will be updated based on the discoveries of Parks Canada and its partners.

LIBRARY & ARCHIVES

2016 News from the W.B. & M.H. Chung Library and Leonard G. McCann Archives. 2016 was a unique year for the W.B. & M.H. Chung Library and Leonard G. McCann Archives. Several exciting, and some disruptive, events occurred. The flood in February unfortunately closed the library for two months while we repaired and recovered. Luckily—and thanks to our storage system as well as quick-thinking staff— the damage to the collections was minimal. Despite the interruption in service, the Library and Archives continued to receive many reference requests in 2016. Every month we corresponded with a variety of customers, including staff, family historians, authors, film makers, corporations, media, students, and many more from around the world. This year the Library and Archives received 12 new donations. One of the most exciting donations to the archives was the complete photographic collection of Murray McLellan and Harbour & Shipping Magazine. Thanks to the generosity of the McLellan family, the fantastic professional photographs published in the magazine will be made available to researchers and will complement the complete collection of the magazine donated to the library in 2015. Another fascinating addition is the George E. McKee fonds. Mr. McKee was heavily involved in management-labour negotiations. These records will add greatly to our understanding of how business and employee relations were conducted on the waterfront. The rest of the donations we accepted this year consist primarily of new library books and journals. For example, we received additional copies of the publication Canada List of Ships which is a priceless resource for vessel research.

The Librarian & Archivist continues to write the “History Lesson” column for the industry magazine BC Shipping News. One interesting topic covered in 2016 was the story of the sinking of the WWII merchant vessel Coast Trader. Its remains were surveyed this past year by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Ocean Exploration Trust. Other stories featured in the column were the history of ferries on the Fraser River, the religious leader and swindler Brother XII, the disastrous sinking of the Clallam, tales of local sea monsters, and more. We would like to give a special thanks to our volunteer cohort, Elizabeth Hawkins, Michelle Spelay, Rosemary Hanna, Katie Quackenbush, Sandi Ma, and Marilyn Ramen for their excellent work this year. We also hosted a talented Professional Experience student this summer, Marie Shockley. Marie tackled three donations in our backlog to arrange and describe them and make them accessible to the public. The collections she processed were the H.T. Nelson Chandlery, the Burrard Shipyard Collection, and the Syd Heal fonds. Thanks to Marie’s efforts, a substantial portion of the backlog is now arranged, described, and ready for researchers. In 2017, we look forward to processing the fascinating materials that have been donated in the past few years and making them available to the public, both physically and online. The goal now is to provide improved access to our unique collections for researchers around the world.

HERITAGE HARBOUR The Heritage Harbour is an outdoor display of privately owned classic and heritage vessels - including the recent addition, The Nadon, The St. Roch’s modern Arctic sister ship, instantly becoming a value-added attraction. The Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club is a Vancouver-based club for enthusiasts of small wooden boats and operates out of a floating workshop at the Heritage Harbour. The Museum partnered with OLSWBC to present several public programs this year.

MODEL WORKSHOP For most of 2016 our Model Maker, Lucian Ploias, was busy constructing the carriage for the 24 pounder naval canon from the time of American Revolution. This type of canon was normally present on the 74 guns ships of the time around the mid 18th Century and up to the first decade of the 19th Century. This original canon with its new carriage can be examined at its display location on the VMM patio. Last months of 2016 were spent restoring a large modern container ship model donated by Seaspan International and research and drawings for the stage 2 of the canon project which is the construction of a cross section of a 74 gun deck which will serve as it’s shelter.

Facility Rentals/Operations had an interesting and diverse collection of events this past year. Throughout the year, we hosted a TED conference event, hosted multiple book launches, many happy weddings on both the terrace and St. Roch, family celebrations and corporate BBQs. The TK. Gallery was the location of numerous conferences and workshops, including Triathlon BC, Lululemon, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and Blue Water Cruising. The Museum opened its doors once again to offer the Bard on the Beach’s Young Shakespeareans an excellent rehearsal space. The Heritage Harbour was the location for filming both a TV show and a commercial. This was the third year that we supported the Georgia Straight Alliances’ Waters Edge Day by providing the venue plus offering free admission to all who attended that day. Always a wonderful day featuring activities and booths educating visitors on protecting our coastal waters. The year ended with a number of holiday parties, both corporate and private. The trees on the terrace and surrounding area were strung with hundreds of lights, adding a special touch for the season. The lights will stay up year round to add a magical element to events, inside and out. 2016 was a busy year, where we welcomed old partners and made new connections.

PARTNERS & ASSOCIATIONS COMMUNITY PARTNERS The museum’s community engagement extends beyond the programs and activities provided by museum staff and volunteers. The museum encourages and supports the activities of other likeminded maritime community groups by offering low cost meeting spaces and business services. The primary criteria for participating in this program are that the group must have a mission statement and objective that is in alignment with the mandate of the museum. This mutually beneficial program not only supports these organizations, but it also enables the museum to engage with different communities of maritime enthusiasts. • Artificial Reef Society of BC: To create environmentally and economicallysustainable “artificial reefs” in British Columbia;

• Oarlock and Sail Wooden Boat Club: Wood boat enthusiasts who build, operate and maintain fleet of small wood boats;

• SS Master Society: Dedicated to the preservation, restoration and operation of the SS Master - the last operational wood hull steam tug on the coast;

• Tiddly Cove Yacht Club: A Vancouver yacht club focused on keelboat cruising and PHRF racing;

• B.C. Ex-Forest Service Vessel Squadron Dedicated to the retired vessels of the B.C. Forest Service and associated vessels;

• Underwater Archaeological Society of BC: A group of volunteers who conserve, preserve, and protect the maritime heritage lying beneath British Columbia’s coastal and inland waters;

• Gulf Yacht Club: A collection of sail-boat owners and their families who like to cruise under sail and explore the waters of British Columbia and beyond (does not include racing);

• World Ship Society of BC: A research community primarily of ships and shipping company history enthusiasts.

The museum continues to support the community by maintaining its membership of the Alliance for Arts and Culture, International Council of Maritime Museums (ICMM), Council of American Maritime Museums (CAMM), Lower Mainland Museum Educators Association, as well as the British Columbia Museums Association (BCMA) and the Canadian Museums Association (CMA).

VOLUNTEERS

2016 has been another great year for volunteers at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Our numbers remain remarkably consistent with the same number of volunteers as in past years, but this year we have continued to experience an increase in the number of hours contributed particularly for our school program volunteers. This tells us we have had a busy year with lots of school children visiting and enjoying the museum. Without our dedicated core of volunteers we would not be able to offer the programs that teachers and students look forward to every year! If we were to put a dollar figure to the work performed by our education volunteers alone, in 2016 volunteers contributed close to $24,000 (in kind) to the museum and our education programs. This is a very big help to our organization and we couldn’t do it without volunteers! Thank you to all who so generously give their time to the museum. In June we recognized our volunteer of the year at our annual volunteer appreciation event. This year Ameen Kanji was named volunteer of the year. Ameen has been volunteering with the museum since 2006. For many years Ameen has contributed in excess of 100 hours to school programs. Always willing to jump in and help out, Ameen is very thoughtful and always willing to offer suggestions. It’s truly been a pleasure getting to know Ameen and working with him over the past few years. Thank you Ameen! Your leadership and guidance are always welcome at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. In addition to helping with school programs, volunteers also help with public programs, special events and in our library and archives. In 2016 the library hosted a student from the University of British Columbia’s Library, Archival and Information Studies program. Marie Shockley completed a volunteer practicum as part of her studies and contributed 120 hours to the museum. Thank you Marie and good luck with your future career!
