A blank page, a vessel where everything fits, a handful of seeds in one instant.

The end of my breath is the beginning of another’s.

Once more, the word translates the reunion of things.

Mapuche and Chileans have always been in conflict, at the core is the question of the land. The Mapuche resisted conquest until the 19th century when they were rounded up in small communities and much of their land sold to companies. As the Mapuche continue to struggle to preserve cultural traditions, it is important to recognize and respect his indigenous group for their customs, history and resistance.

Buses arrive from Temuco City and Puerto Saavedera, and guests are welcomed to the traditionally built Ruka-styled lodges where they are given an introduction to the culture of the natives. The Mapuche are excited to showcase their culture and history to new audiences and welcome people to their land which acts as a safe space for different cultures to come together and celebrate each other.

the boardwalk

DAY 1

9:00 AM

The tour goes for a morning hike to the boardwalk, treading a stretch of 5 kilometres . This is a wrap-around boardwalk or hiking trail with numerous viewing points and interactions with land and water using the existing topography of the area as the design basis. The flora and fauna are observed and appreciated through this journey. At the first Viewpoint, the aqautic fauna is observed through an underground device.

At this time, the tour heads to the orchards, north of Puerto Dominguez. Here, guests are welcome to pick fruits of their choice at one of the finest orchards in all of Araucania region. The Mapuche herb plantations are very well reknowned and these have planned tours available.

The Machi women of the Mapuche are known to have extensive knowledge about medicinal herbs which today in Chile are used as both primary and an alternative to western medicines.

the learning and sharing plaza

DAY 1

The tour continues to the Learning and Sharing plaza. Some of the activities that happen in this space are sharing of cultures through the use of art. These are in the form of music, dance and food workshops.

Today, the Machi women are showing the traditional knitting, weaving and spinning techniques which are now some of the biggest economic activities in the area.

This space is also a learning space for the upliftment of the Mapuche people. Learning opportunities exist in the form of harvesting practices as well as business studies.

the floating market

DAY 1

On wampos, guests are taken to the village floating market on the “sacred” water where they view the work of local artisans such as handicrafts and are able to purchase agricultural goods from vendors.

Water holds spiritual importance to the Mapuche peoples and they believe it needs to be given utmost respect. While bringing communities closer to this sacred entity, the floating markets acts as an economic hub as well as an area of exchange of art and cultures.

Some of these local goods are textiles produced using natural dyes which are made using techniques passed down by the Machi women, traditional jewelry such as headdresses using coins, agricultural produces such as berries and more.

The boats are designed so these can be covered with a shed to adapt to changing weather and also be combined with other boats and opened up with tables for dining services.

The floating markets are accessible through the 2 designed ports as well as the already existing port at Puerto Dominiguez.

The guests land at the floating pavilion for the Caviahue, A Mapuche Dance and Music Night. In the auditorium, the locals perform the Mütrüm Purun, or Guest Dance which acts as a friendly way for the host community to welcome their guests. The dance encourages everyone to gather and reinforces a sense of belonging.

The depth of the Lake is 10.3 metres and uses technology of floating docks where stilts intersect with lake bed which help provides structural stability.

the lodges

DAY 1

9:00 PM

After the celebration, guests arrive back at the lodges where stories are exchanged between locals and tourists and games such as Palin are played among the younger ones. The lodges follow principles of already existing ramadas. Being smaller in scale, these are habitable by 2 people. Each lodge features an element of rukas: the bonfire. These provide warmth and also serve as a continuation of Mapuche tradition.

DAY 2

10:00 AM

Following the boat ride, guests arrive at the West Port where the Research Centre is. Here, they tour the two domes which act as greenhouses and spaces for intermingling of flora, fauna and humans in a natural setting. The tours explores the Eco-Gallery and the activity of birdwaching by the lake.

The Research Centre is also a hub for the growth of Mapuche through lessons of ecology, conservation and preservation. It also contains a multi-functional Discovery and Learning Space, an exhibition area, research labs, classrooms and recreation facilities.

It is based on the principles of eco-collaboration which is an act of working, existing and producing together.

the floating pavilion

DAY 2

12:00 PM

Finally, as a last stop, the guests arrive back at the Pavilion where they explore the handicrafts exhibition.

This also serves as a souvenier shop and allows them to bring a piece of Mpauche culture with them.

The Pavilion has a rooftop dining area where they can enjoy the views of the Grand Budi Lake and its wetlands. The wetlands present in the middle of the Pavilion help in the purification of air and water through the use of nature while also providing scenic views.
