RED KITE SLASH MEDIA

UNITED KINGDOM The red kite is a bird of prey native to Europe and northwest Africa. Its long forked tail twists as it changes direction mid-flight.

The bird tends to find a lifelong mate and begins to build its nest in March each year. Once the victim of persecution throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, the red kite population has managed mostly to recover. Its wingspan is nearly 5.5 feet (2m), but weighs only 2-3 pounds; it can float mid-air for many hours, hardly beating its wings.

KENYA The grey crowned crane’s homeland stretches from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Kenya to southeastern South Africa.

JAPAN The Japanese white-eye is olive green on its back and pale gray on its underside.

Native to East Asia, the bird has at times been introduced to other ecosystems as a pet or as pest control. An extremely social bird, the Japanese white-eye might even form flocks with other species in order to forage during flight.

Often kept as a cage bird, the Japanese white-eye was the subject of much Japanese art.

THE UNITED STATES The national emblem of the United States since 1782, the Bald Eagle is native to North America and tends to nest near large bodies of water. Its wingspan is between 5.9 and 7.5 ft (1.8 and 2.3 m), and they normally weigh in between 6.6 and 13.9 lbs (3 and 6.3 kgs). Bald Eagles mate for life and create the largest nests of any North American bird and the largest tree nest ever recorded for any animal species.

SPAIN Eurasian Eagle Owls are one of the largest species of owl in the world and reside in much of Eurasia. With their large size, bulky build, ear tufts and orange eyes, the Eurasian eagle-owl is quite distinctive.

Largely nocturnal, they are most active in the first few hours after sunset and the last few before sunrise. They feed on small mammals and at times other birds. Occasionally, they have been seen preying on foxes or even young deer.

BLUETHROAT SLASH MEDIA

SWEDEN The Bluethroat is 13–14 cm in size and plain brown except for its distinctive black tail with red side patches. This bird resides in Europe, Asia and western Alaska. Its habitat is primarily thick brush. The male’s song varies, as it often imitates other bird-songs. During courtship, males tend to show off their colorful throat patch. The Bluethroat’s pale blue-green eggs are dotted with reddish brown and incubate for about two weeks.
