40 Inspiring, Empowering & Real Women Over Forty

"Embracing the Timeless Beauty of Women Over 40: A Celebration of Strength, Wisdom, and Empowerment" As we proudly present the second issue of our magazine, I, Vanessa, owner and photographer at VVS Portrait, invite you to join us in these pages, on a remarkable journey, celebrating the enduring strength, wisdom, and beauty found in this very diverse group of women, who have gracefully crossed the threshold of forty.

Within these pages, you will discover inspiring narratives from these remarkable women, accompanied by stunning portraits expertly captured in our Gold Coast studio by yours truly, Vanessa van Straaten, an award-winning photographer. The women, stories and images serve as a testament to the fact that "Beauty Has No Expiration Date”.

I wanted to gain a tapestry of women for this project, along with empowering them and boosting confidence, I also wanted to show them how beautiful they really are. What I didn’t expect, was to make some beautiful friendships from this also.

I would like to thank my amazing support team - My beautiful make-up artists, amazing retouchers, assistants, wonderful neighbour and of course the incredible contributions of my two beautiful children, whose support and assistance has helped in bringing this whole project and magazine to life.

My heartfelt thanks go out to each and every one of you.

What inspired you to apply for this project?

It was a gift for my 90th birthday, my legacy Name one thing you are grateful for?

My family. My greatest achievement, my greatest gifts.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

It is considered we are past our use by date and we are definitely not!

What are you looking forward to when you are older?

Very funny, I’m 90!

What drew you in about this, and what excites you most about participating in our 40 over Forty project?: I have just hit the 50 mark and have never felt better.

I’m working harder than ever before but looking after people is a passion that has taken 50 years to find out!

I grew up in Canberra with an identical twin.

This project is a great chance to showcase my individual uniqueness at 50.

Name one thing that is better now compared to when you were 20 years younger?

I have peace within to love and to be loved. I am my own person and extremely confident. I live each new day as a new challenge learning all the time as times are moving fast. In the last 20 years the growth and awareness has been huge.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That they don't know how to have fun. It’s quite the opposite with life experience we are still the same on the inside. Mature women today are killing it as its their time to shine.

What are you looking forward to when you are older?

I am 65 and loving life as I am excited to keep learning new skills challenging my self each day.

Being kind to myself and giving myself plenty of me time. Loving and respecting my body.

Have the confidence and courage to do what your heart truly desires by following your dreams.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Just be your beautiful self!

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

Yes, we're physically ageing and getting older, but we are still that young minded free spirited and fun loving person at heart.

63 What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Don’t put the up with shit. Be true to who you are and don’t be afraid if someone doesn’t like what you say or do.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Just be the healthiest, happiest version of yourself and don’t allow others to bring you down.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That they are old, wrinkly, dried up and moody.

49 Tell me something about you Meeting my friend Nicky had an impact on me, she showed and taught me many things. Travelling has also been of importance in my life. When I’m older, I am looking forward to staying young at heart. I love that it's far easier now to stay in touch with people worldwide than when I was younger.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Open your eyes and mind. Wake up!

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

They are old and don't want to go out anywhere.

53 Name one thing that is better now compared to when you were 20 years younger?

I care a whole lot less what other people think. I mean I still care what those that matter to me think but it's not more important than what I think about myself.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Learn about your love language and gifts and personality early in life and capitalise on that knowledge. Ask the hard questions of yourself and find mentors who are where you want to be.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That they are boring, don't know how to have fun, and they are done with adventure or new things.

What would you say to your 18 year old self?

Never give up!

Name one thing that is better now compared to when you were 20 years younger?

Me! I know a lot more, don't give a crap about anything anymore., I’m smarter than what I used to be, been around the block a few times. I don't care what people think about me.

Tell me a story of something that had an impact on you growing up, in your 20’s or even 30’s Music, still to this day. It gives me enormous joy. If I'm having a bad day put on music loud and feel better again instantly.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

I think the biggest misconception is that they are not capable to do things younger women can do.

What are you looking forward to when you are older?

I'm looking forward to ageing gracefully.

I would still like to feel good and look good even if I'm old because I believe that age is just a number.

Older women also deserve the same love and admiration that younger women get.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Love yourself, be confident, be kind, have integrity, don't limit yourself, help others if you can, don't stop reaching for your dreams and stay humble once you've reached the top, and most of all, be a woman that inspires.

42 What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Its ok to ask for help. You don't have to go through everything on your own. There are experts out there to help guide you. I would have saved so much time if I had better guidance and direction.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That they are ‘mature’ ?? My mum once told me, “I look older from the outside but inside I am still in my twenties... You will see.”

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Give your best, and that is enough. I wish you courage and freedom to heal your wounds, with intention to let go of any trauma if it was ever experienced. I wish you true joy of loving yourself just as you are. Live and work in passion, and be happy, peaceful and liberated.

What inspired you to be involved in this project?

My daughter asked me what is one thing I wished we could do together, and this was it!

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Be careful who you give your heart and body to until you find someone you really love and trust.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

Mature women can't be funny and interesting or dress well. Mature women are boring and proper.

Tell me something about you, about your life that makes you unique.

I believe in being strong. Living with dignity and I've tried to live that way in the face of many challenges.

What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Enjoy life. Don't hold back. No need to be shy or feel insecure. Each person has something unique to offer. Everything is going to make more sense, the older you get!

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

I guess a lot of people may assume that mature women don't care about themselves anymore or that we are set in our ways, are bitter or don't have enough energy anymore.

Perhaps that we are not fun anymore or boring as well. Little do 'they' know hey?!

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

We are so beautifully different and versatile from each other.

Let your uniqueness shine!

Don't hold on to grudges.

Be creative, expand your sense of self and express your thoughts with clarity and from your heartspace.

What inspired you to be a part of this project?

Empowering women to step up and get back into the spotlight of their life.

What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

I would tell myself that everything works out the way it SHOULD, not just how you want it to, but, when it's all said and done, the universe always has your back and that one day I will be an amazing person, an awesome aunt, and someone I would be happy to look up to.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That they feel they are too old to learn new skills, or afraid to step of their comfort zone, or just not good enough.

What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Spend your time with kind and caring people, and being authentic is the best thing you can be.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Be yourself, be honest even when it is difficult. Treat everyone with kindness, listen deeply when someone shares their problems with you. You will always have great relationships and this is what makes life so happy.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

Not sure what the misconceptions may be, But mature women are so happy and confident from what I can see. They seem to know what is important in life and they try not to sweat the small stuff.

What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Be bold, live intensely and experience as much as you can. Don't be held back by your own limitations and fears, or the limitations of others. You will make errors of judgement, but don't let that prevent you from backing yourself. Expect it all, the good, the bad and the ugly as they all contribute to making you who you are.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

If I could define mature women I would say it's simply an amplified experience. Take everything you know, feel, and experience in your 20's and spread it like a layer across an extensive array of scenarios and circumstances.

The mature woman will be the end product who emerges as a result of those encounters.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Don't look for balance in life, its over-rated. Focus on developing what you are good at, give it your all, and master it where possible. Recognise that over time what you are good at will evolve and change, and that too is ok. Give some thought to what makes your heart sing and include as much of it in your day to day activities as you can. That way you will always have something to smile about

Travel, see the world before settling down.

I’m better off financially now and loving my Grandchildren.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Be yourself. Be kind and polite. Also get off your phones while out with friends.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That we are too old to do certain things.

You’re on the right track, believe in yourself and always keep moving forward no matter what.

Surround yourself with people who believe in you and allow you to thrive.

It’s never too late to try something new, learn a new skill, and go after your dreams.

Your future is a blank canvas go out and paint it.

Plus every storm runs out of rain just like every dark night turns into day.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Open your eyes to the beauty around you. Open your mind to the wonders of life. Open your heart to those who love you, and always be true to yourself In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That we are no longer important and we are made to feel invisible at times.

What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Everything you will do in your beautiful life will bring you joy. And as you meander through too many careers and places to live, you will be fulfilled every step of the way so don't take things too seriously. Life is what you make it.. and you'll do great.

Name one thing that is better now compared to when you were 20 years younger?

My self-confidence.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Build wealth whilst your young so you don't have to work when you're old.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That we're NOT invisible.

What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Don’t live your life with regrets. If you want to do something - do it. You will never know unless you have a go.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Don’t let other people influence your decisions. If you want to try something just do it.

Always try and give back in some way and pay it forward when you can. Not only will you experience a lot of satisfaction, you will never know what a great impact you will have on someone else’s life.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

The biggest misconception about mature women is that we lose our sense of mischief.

47 What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Take your time. Slow down. Life is not a rush but a journey full of stepping stones.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Look after yourself now and into the future. Know your worth and don’t let anyone knock you off your perch.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

All women aged 50 and over slow down in life. This is not the case. You only slow down when you allow yourself too. Keep being inspired and continue to reach for the stars. Your dreams then become your destiny.

What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Whatever happens in your life is not nearly as important as how you react to it. That's the power you hold.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Be the kind of girl who straightens another girls crown without letting anyone else know it was slipping.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That we are too busy with our own lives, family or careers to have close friends.

Tell me something about you, about your life that makes you unique.

I don't like to boast, but I believe I have come to a place in my life, where I can give love and support to many, I start every day with a massive smile on my face, love in my heart, and greet everyone every day with a positive attitude, so they too can have a fabulous day.

What is the one thing you would love to say to your 18 year old self?

Have faith that you are going to be ok, and you are going to thrive and be the amazing woman you dreamed about.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

I think that it’s a fallacy that we are not of any use anymore, especially once you hit 60, I have never been this happy ever in my life, and I AM 66, It gets better and better, I have learned to love my age.

I have learnt to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves, while staying true to my personal values, and not trampling others in the process.

The possibility of encouraging younger generations and helping them to mature into the best version of themselves.

We women love and appreciate looking attractive, but to prioritise that without being a person of integrity and principle is a mistake that affects not just yourself but those you care about as well.

Speak your truth to yourself and others, follow that vision and always ask if you don’t know something.

Never lose site of who you are! Speak your truth in a nice way and communicate about how you feel.

Friends are very important. Never lose touch with those girlfriends.

That we are unemployable in this technical world.

Establish your boundaries early and do not waiver on them for anyone. Stand strong in your personal power.

Don't let anyone take your personal power from you; high standards does not mean high maintenance.

That we are over the hill, I believe life begins at 40, a new age of wisdom happens at 50 and 70 is the new 40.

What message would you like to give to today’s younger female generation?

You are amazing. You are one in a billion just by being born. You can achieve anything you want. If you believe it, see it and act on it, anything is possible.

What are you looking forward to when you are older?

More wisdom and enjoying every precious moment on the planet.

Nothing. Truly nothing, everything good, bad or evil happened for a reason.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Live life the fullest, never sell yourself short. Aim for the stars (and get there). You are the best.

That we are old. We are physically, but our energy can be as we were when in our 20's and 30's.

That aging holds us back because it stops us from realising our true worth as an older woman.

I think its great that you have a lot of self confidence and aren't afraid to show it but remember you can still deliver your message without being harsh.

That we have passed our use by date and are no longer of use.

I now get to enjoy the work I have put into creating beautiful gardens on my property. I love roses and have over 70 rose bushes on my property.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Being a wife and a mother is very fulfilling and rewarding. It has many challenges but the sacrifices brings wonderful rewards.

Stop pulling yourself down, go for it and keep going for it. When you look in the mirror love yourself no matter what anyone else says.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

You can change the world, so go for it and in fact, do not let any constraints hold you back. Stop worrying about what everyone else thinks of you and follow your path.

That they are done with their purpose and ability to contribute to life.

Tell me a story of something that had an impact on you?

Losing my husband at 32 years old has taught me to be more gentle with myself and that I have the strength to do anything I put my mind to.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Don’t be easily led. Wear what makes you happy, don’t be a slave to fashion.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That we are no longer relevant or interesting.

You are allowed to be ok with who you are, no-one sees all the flaws that you see. Chill out and enjoy yourself.

What message would you like to give to today's younger female generation?

Be yourself, you don’t need to be like everyone else.

Who you are is the most amazing ‘you’ that you can be and you are all beautiful.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about mature women?

That we don’t know how to have fun. We have way more experience in having fun - and are just getting started so ‘look out!’

Knowing I've done all I can to make the world a better place. Also travelling more, more time with family, following my passions.

What inspired you to be a part of this project.

I was inspired to be a part of this project to look as young as I feel inside.

What are you looking forward to?

I am looking forward to retirement and spending more time with my family. In the last 20 years, I feel like my knowledge of life is far better and having children has played a big part of that. I look forward to helping them take every opportunity that comes their way.
