Christmas Birds Art and Inspiration for the Season and Beyond Beautiful birds, common and rare, familiar and exotic inhabit this little book. They represent part of a 40-year tradition of original art paired with the artist/author’s messages produced as her personal Christmas cards. Twenty-five bird paintings are included along with an introduction from the author and a history of the project. Each unit consists of a color plate of the original painting, that year’s holiday message with a relevant scripture, and a brief description of the featured bird. Perfect as a personal or corporate gift, Christmas Birds is destined to become a treasured keepsake. If you want to see a flamingo, you could go to a zoo, but I recommend the Hialeah racetrack. They have their own flock which lives in the infield, and a keeper who goes out and shoos them into flight just before the races start. The birds lift up as one and sweep across in front of the grandstand like a magical pink cloud. It’s a spectacle. Such things bring to mind a passage from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in which He urges us not to be anxious about anything, pointing out that God has provided much more for us than he has for the birds and the lilies of the field which are fed and clothed in more glory than Solomon. At His birth, the announcing angel proclaimed Him the Saviour of mankind. It’s the ultimate provision by the ultimate Designer.

Although emblematic of the Sunshine State, the Greater Flamingo is native to the Caribbean and Central America, and is only rarely seen in the wild in Florida. Its pink color comes from iodine in its diet of crustaceans.

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall exult in my God: For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation... Isaiah 61:10
