CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION I, Vanessa Cane S. Canasa, a graduating student taking up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Financial Management. I am taking On-the-Job Training at Home for this semester. I got accepted at Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and was assigned to the treasury team of Ramon Aboitiz Family Office (RAFO). Students who take OJT at home have to render a total of 560 hours to complete the On-the-Job training at home modality.

The OJT that I was expecting is far from what I experienced due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The whole journey of my OJT is done virtually. As someone who considers herself as an introvert, I really had to get out of my comfort zone in order to fulfill my duties. I had to communicate with my supervisor and the rest of the team through different platforms such as Microsoft Teams, emails, and the like. It is also where we meet to discuss projects and progress.

This set-up turned my bedroom into my office space. I don’t have to wake up early to prepare to go to the office because I can just grab my laptop and do work in my bed. However, I had to deal with so many distractions including browsing through social media from time to time because no one sees me doing it. But despite not being able to work in an office space, I was able to make the most of my OJT. I still learned a lot of things with the help of my supervisors and other colleagues. I was able to enhance my communication skills because I am often communicating with my team. This experience may not be the typical OJT experience like others had but this has taught me to become more flexible and independent. I had to adapt to this set-up and discover things on my own. With the pandemic still going on, I have to say that this set-up is advantageous for me in terms of my health and safety. Also, as I said I am an introvert so this kind of set-up is a little less intimidating for me. I was able to perform my task well without feeling nervous all the time because I am just at home. But, if I were given the chance to report onsite, I would love to go and experience what it is like to work with different professionals.

My whole OJT experience was exceptional because of the RAFO Team. Right from the very beginning everyone has welcomed me with open arms even though we did not get to meet in person. They are all so accommodating and very hands on with their OJTs. They tried to make my whole OJT experience as valuable as it can be. I learned so much from them that I know I can use in my future endeavors.

CHAPTER THREE CONCLUSION I have learned a lot of things from my Student Training Program class and all the webinars that I've attended all throughout this semester. From listening to the synchronous class discussions to different guest speakers of the webinars, there’s so much insight and wisdom that I got from them. All the lessons and topics that were discussed have helped me be equipped for my future career and I was also able to apply it during my training in RAFI. One takeaway that I will never forget from listening to one of the guest speakers is that life after graduation is not easy. Fresh graduates must prove themselves that they are deserving to be hired. I was humbled down to become a better young professional and got motivated to do the best in everything I do while listening to all the inspiring stories of the guest speakers. I was encouraged to dream and not settle for anything less. I was inspired to try and pursue different things in life. It was also a big help to be able to assess my learnings through participating in the online class discussions and making reflections for the webinars.

Experience is the best teacher one could ever have. My on-the-job training has taught me that learning is a never ending journey. Every day I get to learn a thing or two from my tasks, even if it’s a very simple and easy task. For me, the best thing about my OJT is that I got to know more about myself. I get to assess my own performance and output and from that I was able to improve the areas that I find weak. I was able to improve my technical, intrapersonal, and interpersonal skills. And as a financial management student, the most important takeaway from my experience of OJT is that one should live by the values of integrity and honesty. I believe that these values are very important to have, especially being in the field of Finance. I believe that when it is time for me to step out in the real world of professionals, I know in myself that I am competent enough to be able to deliver my work successfully.

Being in an online set-up for my OJT has its own perks but also downside. There are so many distractions at home that can be so tempting. The number one that can distract me is my phone. It is such a struggle to keep my phone away and avoid browsing in social media. Having to juggle synchronous class activities and my tasks in OJT is also one of the many challenges I 32

encountered. I feel like I have to give up one of them to be able to focus on the other one. It means that the quality of my output is affected. When there is too much on my plate already, I lose focus. It’s one of the areas I need to improve on myself. Another struggle in working from home is when the internet connection is down. Everything freezes when the internet connection is lost. I encountered this problem and it lasted for two weeks. It was the most unpleasant week of my OJT life. Lastly, it was such a struggle for me that I am the only one in my class taking OJT at home as my modality. I don’t have anyone else to talk to about my concerns. I was so scared to do it alone but nonetheless, I was able to get this far. The only thing that I can recommend to improve STP is that you allow students to choose what company they want to apply to. This might be an opportunity for every student to apply to their dream company or organization. Overall, the student training program was a success for me.

CASE STUDY NO. 2 CHAPTER 3: The Fund Holder’s Ethical Dilemmas Chapter 3.1: From Non-Consumptions to Savings.

There are mainly two situations in which immediate disposable income is not consumed.

In most cases, it entails self-sacrifice in order to achieve a significant long-term goal. Savings and deliberate self-sacrifice that are distinguished from forced savings resulting from doing long-term obligations and responsibilities, such as pension funds or life insurance premiums. On the other hand, non-consumption is the result of a technical or physical inability to consume all of one's income in less common circumstances, but they are nonetheless substantial in terms of volume. There is certainly little in common between industrial lineage fortunes (savings) maintained by 'family offices,' typically over several generations, and individuals who build a family wealth by making everyday sacrifices. From the two situations, you can see the difference in the way in which people save. This is actually true to life situations. For the former situation, a lot of us right now want to have a bright future not just for ourselves but for our families as well. We sacrifice to save rather than consume our incomes because we want to be financially stable in whatever circumstances we encounter, may it be a family member getting hospitalized or for education purposes. On the latter, this is only applicable for people who came from a wealthy family. Where one does not need to do a lot of sacrifices because they already have the fortune.

An ethical question is presented on what purpose do non-consumptions and savings serve. A three-possible answers with major ethical implications are stated in the book. The first focuses on seriousness and economical way of consumption and more so broadly the way of life.

Consumption is focused on fundamental necessities regardless of economic level. Saving is not what is focused here but rather merely a means to an end. A two possible scenarios can be classified here : either the remaining income is used differently or saved and or else it is simply abandoned without any expectations in return. Second, another possible reason for saving is for future need or acquisition, thus, it can be said that future use is what motivates a person for non-consumptions. Lastly, another plausible reason to save is the desire to produce more assets that can be passed down to future generations or, more pragmatically, to get rich. The three-possible answers of the question presented make sense and are true to life. People save money or not for different reasons. It depends to them what the reasons or the purpose of saving rather than consumption of income and vice versa. But, out of the three-possible answers, I can relate more to the second one which is saving for future needs. As a student, I am still relying on my allowances. There may be things that I want to acquire and I might not have the means to get it all at once. So, what I did and still doing, I always save a portion of my allowance for future needs. As I am getting older, asking money from my parents for my wants seems too much already so I have to find ways to get what I want.

The overall idea of this topic is that people save or not for different reasons. It is up for the person on how he or she uses the means. Also, it really depends on the situation. For instance, ever since the pandemic happened a lot of us are trying to save and or forced to save.

Such as, according to the news article of CNBC by Maggie Fitzgerald, the corona virus has Americans hoarding more money than ever as widespread fear paralyzes consumer spending habits. The Bureau of Economic analysis said that the U.S personal savings rate hit a historic record of 33% last April 2020. Gregory Daco, chief U.S. economist at Oxford Economics said it is due to the tremendous uncertainty and virus fear that is lingering and that is restraining people’s desire to go out and spend as they normally would. Moreover, Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton told CNBC that there is an aspect of “forced savings”. There is not much opportunity for many people to go out and spend money, said Megan Greene, a senior

fellow at Harvard Kennedy School. With this, we can tell that people who do not find any reason to spend or consume end up saving.

Chapter 3.4: Forced Savings: Life Insurance and Pension Funds.

During the second half of the twentieth century, there was a proliferation of financial products and its affiliated institutions that enabled savers to assign their savings to specific events such as death, invalidity or retirement. In some countries, insurance of all or part of these risks was made compulsory. There are two possible outcomes from this event. It covers the entire population for some risks while denying households free access to a portion of their earnings.This explains why the part of savings automatically assigned to compulsory payments is sometimes known as ‘forced savings’. The second effect of mandatory risk insurance is that it reduces the likelihood of people becoming reliant on government help when they retire. While compulsory contributions limit access to one's income, they also prevent 'free-riding' in social policy by requiring everyone to save, especially those who are most prone to waste their earnings.

In the Philippine setting, regular employees are obligated to pay monthly contributions to four government agencies. Some monthly contributions are shared with the employer. The employee’s portion of these monthly contributions is usually automatically deducted from their salary. According to an article made by Duran & Duran-Schulze Law, the following are the basic government deductions: Income Tax. The Philippines has recently undergone tax reforms under the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law, which includes changes to the tax bracketing system. This is paid solely by the employee; SSS. It is a social insurance program providing retirement and health benefits to its members. The employer is responsible for making the contribution payments in accordance with the prescribed schedule of payment; PHILHELATH. The National Health Insurance Program is there to provide health insurance coverage and ensure affordable and accessible health care services for Philippine citizens; lastly, PAG-IBIG. Also known as the Home Development Mutual Fund, the Pag-IBIG Fund is a government-administered national savings program and affordable shelter financing service.

Out of all the basic government deductions, I already got PHILHEALTH even if I am not yet employed yet. I applied for a voluntary contribution paying a monthly obligation of 300 pesos. I decided to get PHILHEALTH so that it lessens my processing time during job application. However, it was announced that an increase is set to effect for all direct contributors.

As prescribed in Section 10 of Republic Act No. 11223 or the Universal Health Care (UHC) Act, and in accordance with PhilHealth Circular No. 2020-0005 on the "Premium Contribution Schedule in the National Health Insurance Program (Revision 1 );' all Direct Contributors are hereby advised that the premium rate for CY 2022 is 4.0%, with an income floor of P10,000.00 and income ceiling of P80,000.00 effective January 2022. The adjusted premium rate shall take effect in the Electronic Premium Remittance System (EPRS) and the PhilHealth Member Portal starting the applicable month of June 2022. Members and employers who have already paid their contributions at 3% are advised to generate the corresponding Statement of Premium Account for the paid periods so they can settle the 1 o/o differential payments/remittances until December 31, 2022. This increase is such a burden for employees with basic salaries. This is clearly what we call a forced savings. I know a lot of regular employees do not want this increase but this is mandatory.

CHAPTER 4: The Ethical Dilemmas Facing Fund Users Chapter 4.2: Risk and Business Financing.

According to Richard Cantillion, an entrepreneur is someone who takes risks on fixed costs. He wrote this at the time in which the legal construct of the “legal person” was the exception and not as it is today’s rule. Today, the entrepreneur's financial risk is now limited to his or her invested money, which is the company's own capital, which is represented by shares.

There are two types of shareholders: entrepreneurs who own shares in their companies and outside investors who simply contribute financing without any understanding or expertise in the company's field of operation. Financing can be very risky in every business. Knowing which sources of capital to pursue without exposing danger to the business is one of the ethical challenges for every entrepreneur. This is somewhat a common case in terms of family

businesses such as when family members’ savings are utilized to finance a seemingly brilliant but in practice often badly flawed project. But in order to increase profit and accelerate growth, a business requires strong financing but it can be very difficult for a family business. A key difference between family businesses and other companies is the fact that the majority of the former view control over their company as a key success factor which makes financing options even more limited.

All kinds of businesses face risks and family business is no exception. They are more risk averse than their nonfamily counterparts and so they are generally thought to adopt a more concervative approach toward managing their business operation. According to an article entitled Financing Sources and Solutions for Family Business Growth Capital Needs by David Guin and Clyde Tinnen, careful consideration must be given to the impact of various financing options on family as well as business objectives. The financing goal of each family will be different, but all families should start the process by weighing financing alternatives against family objectives.

Once the financing option is determined and is consistent with the family objectives, it is critical to build a credible business case for strategic growth objectives. It is important that management diligently and honestly assess the opportunity at hand in light of anticipated long-term and short-term benefits no matter who the potential source of capital. The business case should take into account industry and business risks, management and organization capabilities to execute the strategy, transaction costs, and expected timing. All of these considerations will go into the company’s extensive analysis of the expected return on investment to all stakeholders (both the growth capital investors and existing business stakeholders), which is at the heart of the decision to participate in the funding. Next, the company must then find possible investors and gauge their interest in the arrangement. The company typically taps into its existing network first such as banks affiliated with the company, attorneys, accountant, employees, friends, and family should be considered first. Their understanding of the firm and those involved can swiftly close an information and trust gap that new investors take longer to acquire. Finally, the company must carefully consider the capital terms offered and secure capital commitments. It's critical to consider all of the phrases in the context of the strategic goals.

It is important to take note of all the things to consider in choosing the ways in financing a family business. Finance is the life blood of every business so it is important to evaluate, observe and analyze every account into consideration. There is too much risk involved and as stated above, one of the ethical dilemmas of every entrepreneur is financing the business without exposing it to excessive risk.

Chapter 4.10: The Jubilee Project: Keeping Financial Due Dates Control.

The idea of the Jubilee project demands the creditors and debtors to make an agreement and calculate a time frame on which no debt contract can override. By the time of Jubilee and the creditor still has not obtained the debt, he has no choice but to let it go. As for the debtor, when the jubilee comes, the debt shall be returned to the creditor. For me, this is such a disadvantage on the creditor’s end and I think this kind of agreement is no longer used nowadays. Business is business. For someone who took the risk and lent his money to someone without even the certainty of obtaining it back is too much already how much more if no punishment will be imposed. I personally would never lend my money if this kind of setup is practiced here in the Philippines and I think nobody ever will. It should be a win-win situation for both the debtor and creditor.

There are so many ways to keep the financial due dates in control but not in the way that one would be at disadvantage. That is why terms and conditions and contracts exist because it protects both the creditor and the debtor. An article from PHILSTAR entitled Securities and Exchange issues memorandum on unfair debt collection practices. The SEC has issued a memorandum circular to help prevent unfair debt collection practices such as the use of insults or profane language, violent threats or false representation. To add, the creditor may resort to all reasonable and legally permissible means to collect amounts due them under the loan agreement provided that, in the exercise of their rights and performance of their duties, they must observe good faith and reasonable conduct and refrain from engaging in unscrupulous and untoward acts.

From this, it is important to remember that creditors are just doing business. If no law will protect them, they will get abused by some debtors who will take advantage if the Jubilee project is practiced today.

Chapter 5: Ethical Dilemmas in Financial Intermediation Chapter 5.3: Financial Innovation: Cui Bono?

Financial products are divided into two main categories: Standard and Non-standard products. The former is governed by regulations, whilst the latter is not and is traded over the counter. The same is true of markets and institutions: some are regulated and require a banking license, while others ( "shadow banking") are out of reach of authorities. Standardization paved the way for the spread of options trading. Modern finance that is attractive to both holders of idle cash balances and intermediaries. As a result of these instruments, finance risk allocation roles become autonomous. With this, an ethical question is raised for asset managers on how to use these costly tools in a reasonable way particularly when dealing with clients who have entrusted the management of funds to them. Financial innovation sounds so promising especially to those who did not really understand it and were incapable of bearing it. Users assumed to understand the technique and to have all the information they needed that is why products were sold without any qualms. All of this explains why there are growing calls for regulation to close ethical loopholes and for users to be protected against the exploitation of financial innovations through a certification system that, like medicines, evaluates and assesses the product's effectiveness before approving its distribution.

According to an article entitled The Changing Contours of Financial Innovation, several high-profile financial innovations like blockchain and cryptocurrency have attracted widespread attention. The broad landscape of financial invention, where innovation occurs, what it targets, and who is responsible for it has not been studied systematically. During the Financial Innovation in the 21st Cent: Evidence from US Patents, Josh Lerner and et al., addresses these issues by analyzing a new dataset of US financial patents awarded over the last two decades. The patent data offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolving landscape of financial innovation.

Banks and other traditional financial institutions create a small and diminishing share of patents, with the sharpest decreases occurring around the 2008 financial crisis. Financial patents focusing on banking have also decreased, with applications in consumer finance and back-office sectors such as security and communications taking their place. The researchers suggest that the shifts in

financial innovation away from New York and away from the financial sector reflect both the push of strict financial regulation and the pull of technological opportunity. Areas with more stringent banking regulation exhibited larger drops in innovation by financial companies than by IT firms, as well as larger drops in banking-focused patents.

Chapter 5.5: Volatility and Risk Transfer.

Financial market volatility simply refers to changes in asset prices over time and is partly due to uncertainty. The greater the economic and financial uncertainty, the greater the financial market volatility. Right now, there is tremendous uncertainty about the impact COVID-19 will have on economic growth and corporate profits. As a result, financial market volatility has spiked and is likely to remain elevated until this uncertainty is resolved.

CASE STUDY NO. 3 6.2 Inside Out and Outside In. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) currently focuses on the negative impact of economic transactions and value chains inside production plants, service establishments, networks, etc. The goal is to reduce and at best completely avoid the damaging effect of such areas. According to Denis Meadows of the Club of Rome, it is necessary to acknowledge that in the past, sustainable contributions were overlooked, resulting in huge negative feedback on the value chain of businesses and the living situations of ordinary households (rebound effect). The ethical notion of resilience, as defined by the sustainable development approach, becomes relevant, resulting in a new interpretation of sustainability and ethics: the obligation to defend against the negative consequences of unsustainable development.

Due to the proven risks of global warming, which can result in severe weather occurrences, ethical considerations in finance should shift to how money can help an economy and society become more robust. There are different ways to fight global warming. Such as with the help of banks because banks are enablers to fight for climate change. According to an article published by Business Reporter, the banks have a crucial role in advocating CO2-conscious lifestyles among consumers. CO2 emissions are derived from consumption, consumption is enabled by spending money and money is handled by banks. Because the drastic impacts of

climate change have already been seen, banks need to take responsibility and act to fight it. An estimate of 70% of CO2 emissions are driven by consumer behavior. That is why banks and financial institutions can be key enablers in fighting climate change because they can see and process all our transactions. However, this raises a question on how sustainability can be incorporated with banking services. Banks can help consumers change their lives towards a more sustainable world by giving financial advice that is good for the bank, the consumer and the environment and make a real impact. For instance, banks can advise homeowners to choose geothermal heating instead of district heating. This would not only decrease the emissions of the house but also increase the property’s value and decrease the bank’s collateral risk.

As someone who is likely to work in a bank in the future and is aware of these major global challenges due to global warming, I could use my voice to take a stand on what is ethical to do. I could encourage and propose this idea to the bank and its stakeholders to help fight climate change. Since I am aware of the pressing matters, I want to be proactive and help the society by taking a stand. After all, this is not just for my sake but for everyone.

6.6 It Is Always Good to Be Good.

Businesses and organizations were once deemed to have only one responsibility and that is to make a profit. Yes, it is always the number goal. But apart from profit centric of the corporation, a wide range of responsibilities are expected from its stakeholders. These responsibilities are in the form of what we call Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The emergence of corporate social responsibility was during the 1950s when American corporations rapidly increased in size and power. During this time, the country faced significant social issues such as poverty, unemployment, race relations, urban blight, and pollution, as well as other pressing social issues. People from many groups considered it necessary to demand a change in American business, which was a call for corporations to be more socially responsible. But despite the growing awareness about CSR, it is remarkable that some still think corporations only comply with CSR for public relations and advertising purposes only. Most empirical researches view CSR’s primary function as the enhancer firm profitability.

I truly believed that the reason why others think CSR is only for show is because of ignorance and the lack of real understanding of what CSR is really all about. A good CSR must come from within. Good practices must start with awareness and the ability to comprehend their true value and significance. One way to be able to understand CSR, stakeholders should engage meaningful dialogues on matters of mutual concerns. Doing CSR means doing the right thing and this is not limited to giving donations to charity but doing ethical, transparent business practices that hold a company accountable for its actions. But we cannot deny the fact that CSR greatly affects the performance of the company. According to the article entitled “Is Corporate Social Responsibility Always a Good thing?” there are some researchers that examined the performance of socially responsible companies (SRCs) versus non-socially responsible companies (non-SRCs). For instance, examine the performance of SRCs versus non-SRCs relative to standard financial performance metrics of returns, valuation and a general market index. Archival public data was collected for the top 120 NASDAQ and NYSE firms ranked by market capitalization, and SRC/non-SRC classification was determined by matrix coding of socially responsible corporate practices. The study demonstrated that SRCs outperformed non-SRCs over the 5-year period relative to returns, valuation and the S&P 500 general market index. Moreover, other researchers find out that companies’ use of CSR can help to attract, motivate and retain human resource talents. Individuals with a high number of job choices, such as those with high educational levels, are likely to respond in a strong and positive way to CSR, to feel enthusiastic to work for a company committed to CSR and to express high levels of dedication to company success.

As a financial management student, I believe that participating in CSR would not only allow me to help others and become more socially responsible, but it will also boost my morale by motivating me to be ethically responsible in my actions. This topic will help me with my future career. As someone who will likely work in financial services, I should observe ethical practices. This will help me build a crucial ethical stand in which I will be accountable for fulfilling my duties.

6.7 Power to the People The essential foundation of ethical goodwill among individuals underpins the integration of ethical considerations in general and sustainable issues in particular. The idea that businesses, governments, and other investment entities should function in harmony with nature and promote social well-being is based on the assumption that stakeholders have a general understanding of ethics and morals and are willing to follow it. A closer look at different stakeholder groups, self-declared representatives, and NGOs reveals a somewhat different picture. Great hopes in democratic societies and market economies rest on consumers. In practice, they can express their ethical concerns by purchasing things with positive ethical qualities or boycotting products with poor ethical qualities.

From what I understand, the idea of this topic is about the ability of the consumer to influence in promoting social environmental well-being. It is up to the society on how to respond to ethical concerns regarding the products with either positive or negative ethical qualities.

People nowadays are more aware of the environmental impact of consumer goods and are better informed about it. They want industry to improve its products' environmental performance. An article by Dave Armon entitled “More Consumers Doubtful Recycling Works, Study Reveals” that Americans consumers are rapidly losing faith that the paper, plastic and metal containers chucked into those blue bins are being recycled according to research presented. This is despite the strong will to help the environment by recycling. This growing lack of trust in recycling is a threat to new circular economy business models that are dependent on a steady flow of feedstock from resource-recovery centers. As consumers, this goes to show how Americans are concerned with the products they have been using or consuming. People as consumers do care for the environment and it is important for businesses to utilize green marketing in order to improve reputation and brand image thus resulting in consumer loyalty and a positive impact on the bottom line.

As a future finance professional, it is important for me to know what influences the behavior of the customer in purchasing products. This will allow me to understand the different preferences of customers and in that way I could take into consideration these preferences such
