unit 3
about the project
From the Soul aims to break down the barriers that exclude Liberians from the conversation and representation of African culture and black history in the UK.
Liberia brings its own unique history and character to the African diaspora community, and deserves to be celebrated and acknowledged just like the many other cultures that are present in our society. We often tend to understand or relate to others better having experienced something emotionally or physically ourselves, these emotions help us to better understand an event or situation as we may have been in that position ourselves. For this reason this project uses sensory elements such as visuals, colour, music, sound, materials and textures, which will allow me to create an immersive experience that aims to 'transport' users to Liberia and allow them to physically and emotionally experience and have better understanding of the history and culture. The creative industries of music, fashion, art and design from Liberia also assists this project in making it a unique immersive experience, as they originate from and are inspired by moments in history that shaped Liberia to be what it is today.
palava huts I used Liberian architecture to inform the design of my structure and focused on the Palaver Huts, a traditional form of Liberian architecture. The word palaver originates from the Liberian koloqua term for 'problem' or 'issue' and the circular huts are constructed from clay walls which are supported by wooden or bamboo pillars, with thatched roofs.
