Bud Sugg, intern at Vanderbilt Student Media, records his first podcast in Studio C.
Providing next steps Bud Sugg dreams of becoming a radio broadcaster, and he's learning the skills he needs in his internship at Vanderbilt Student Media. Sugg is a student in Next Steps at Vanderbilt, a two-year certification program for students with intellectual disabilities. Next Steps students work in multiple internships to help them learn transferrable employment skills, according to Tammy Day, Next Steps program director. "These are skills that cannot be taught in a classroom," Day said. "The internships allow our students to actually know that they have lots to contribute, and their futures look so much brighter." Student Media advisers Paige Clancy and Jim Hayes have been working with Sugg to develop weekly podcasts on a variety of topics. Sugg records and edits his "Budcasts" in Student Media's Studio C, and the podcasts can be heard on InsideVandy. com. "It has been absolutely awesome," Sugg said. "When people listen to my podcasts, they can think, 'This man could definitely be a radio broadcaster.'" Previous Next Steps students who have interned at Student Media were Will McMillan, Michael Heroux and Andrew Van Cleave.

Reminiscences of a Hustler Alumna by Judge Caryl P. Privett, Class of '70
As I sat in the stands watching Vanderbilt beat North Carolina State on Jan. 31, it was hard to recall what it felt like to attend a football game at Vanderbilt in the late 1960s: women all dressed up with corsages and guys in ties. I don’t recall many wins back then, but we did beat Alabama my senior year. After the Music City Bowl, former Hustler editor in chief Chuck Offenburger, Caryl P. Privett Doug Bates and I spent the evening in front of the fireplace in Doug’s family room in Centerville, Tenn., reminiscing about our days at Vanderbilt and how things have changed. We were there for Stokely Carmichael coming to campus for Impact, for Robert Kennedy speaking in Memorial Gym. We were “Clean for Gene,” or at least I was. We witnessed the aftermath of the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Kennedy, and the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. Being a protestor against the Viet Nam war at Vanderbilt meant holding candles and marching to downtown Nashville or standing around the ROTC review with a protest sign. Bates was in the ROTC and went to ‘Nam. I went to NYU to law school and met fellow students who took over Columbia and Michigan. Being a radical feminist at Vanderbilt meant wanting the same privileges as the guys: no hours and no dress code. When I got to law school in 1970, I found out that I didn’t really know what a radical feminist really was. Indeed, I didn’t really know what a radical was. A Vanderbilt radical was merely a moderate by NYU standards. As a proud member of the Class of 1970, I have discovered that I care a lot more about Vanderbilt athletic prowess than I ever did as a student. (I was not on the sports staff of the Hustler, but I did edit their copy - or at least I tried.) In the late ‘60s, Vanderbilt athletics was all about basketball. Perry Wallace became the first African-American to play on an SEC varsity team. Godfrey Dillard was also in our class, and I remember his crutch raised in cheer for his teammate, but Godfrey didn’t play after freshman year. And there was a separate freshman team back then, wasn’t there? There were a motley few fans of Vanderbilt baseball then, mostly Hustler staffers as I recall. When I returned home to Birmingham to practice law as a civil rights lawyer, it never occurred to me that I could be elected to dogcatcher, much less to the bench. A white former debutante working in a black law firm was not perceived to be on the road to a successful legal career in the early ‘70s. Most successful lawyers and all judges were white males then. How times have changed. Of the 39 elected judges in Jefferson County, Ala. (that’s Birmingham and Bessemer), 18 are African-American, including our presiding judge, and 16 are female, 10 of them African-American females. Since being appointed to the bench 10 years ago, I’ve won two county-wide elections, one contested. My history as a civil rights lawyer is seen as a plus now. Willie Geist (1997), Today show co-host, will provide the opening keynote presentation at the College Media Association spring convention, March 9-12. The New York City-based event annually draws more than 1,500 college journalists and their advisers from schools across the country (www.ncy13.org). Included among the more than 300 training opportunities at the convention will be advanced skills workshops taught by Lee Jenkins (1999), Sports Illustrated senior writer, and Charlie Euchner (1982), author, former professor and think-tank director. Other Vanderbilt alumni presenting sessions at the event include: Rob Shaw (2004), head of broadcast and director of content, Bloomberg Sports; Alexis Plauché (2004), associate account executive, Scripps Networks; Nikki Bogopolskaya (2010), business development manager, Liberty Advertising; Gaby Román (2010), video editor at Meltzer Media Productions; and Andrew Kirkman (2012), CBS News. The New York convention is one of two major national media training events presented by CMA each fall and spring. CMA includes members at colleges and universities in 50 states and Canada. The 60-year-old association moved its headquarters to Vanderbilt in July 2011. Do you want to speak to college students? Please let us know. My Commodore experience got me started on volunteer activities that still keep me busy. Burt and I have lived in eight different US locations and been fortunate to travel all over the world - small ship cruising has to be our favorite. Four daughters, four grand-daughters and two great grands complete our family. We currently live in a Continuing Care Retirement Community - we love the freedom to "go and do" and yet be pampered when we're home.

Koon H B.E., 1967 M.S., 1969 (IMPACT Symposium) Koon lives in Atlanta, GA, and said: Koon has been named a Professor of the Practice in the environmental engineering program at Georgia Institute of Technology. In this role Koon teaches environmental engineering courses that deal with the design of environmental control systems. Koon also continues to provide engineering consulting services to industrial and other clients through John H Koon & Associates. He is Koon also a fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Water Environment Federation. Previously Koon worked with global engineering companies for 37 years in technical leadership roles. It is this experience working with industries, cities, and defense agencies to solve water pollution problems that he draws upon for his teaching. Koon is married to Junith Smitherman Koon (BA ‘69) who has worked for 32 years with Discovery Toys, an educational toy company. She holds the rank of Legacy Diamond Director and describes her work as “building stronger families and brighter children through the power of play.”

I have been on Pardon The Imterruption, SportsCenter, the CBS Evening News, the Jim Lehrer NewsHour, Outside the Lines, and NPR. Only once did I cover Vandy. It was when the Barry Goheen team lost to Kansas in the Sweet 16. At the opening jump ball, I said in an excited gabble to our stunned college basketball reporter, "OK. Let's kick some rock chalf ass." Alas, the reverse occurred. WAFN-FM was the sole North Alabama FM to remain on the air throughout the event providing necessary emergency and relief information without commercial, music or any interuption for six consecutive days. Wilson Ellis H B.A., 1973 (Commodore yearbook) Ellis lives in Atlanta, GA, and said: The former Managing Director of Communications for Northern Trust, Wilson now heads Ellis Consulting. In 2008 on their 30th anniversary, he and spouse Tom Woodham, retired Senior Editor of Veranda magazine, were married amidst friends and family in the San Diego Botanic Garden overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The couple divides their time between Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale. Zanese Brown Duncan H B.A., 1973 (The Vanderbilt Hustler) Duncan lives in Peachtree Corners, GA, and said: After retiring from over 30 years as an actuary, Zanese has joined the staff of Wellspring Living, which has restorative homes and programs for women and girls who have been subject to human trafficking or other abuse. As church relations liaison, she helps organizations hold events to bring awareness about trafficking issues and to encourage individuals to make a difference.

Bo Turner Carter H B.A., 1974 (The Vanderbilt Hustler, Versus magazine, Commodore yearbook) Carter lives in Carrollton, TX, and said: Bo Carter, a veteran of 40-plus years in college media relations, is no stranger to college athletics, communications and the business world. Carter currently serves as advisor to the Texas Woman’s University newspaper – The Lasso – and student publications in Denton, Texas, since May 2009. He also has been a consultant and columnist with the National Football Foundation since Aug. 2006 after working with the Big 12 Conference for 10 years and the Texas Collegiate League in 2006. Carter, a native of Sheffield, Ala., and 1974 cum laude graduate in classics at Vanderbilt, has been associated with conference and school athletics media relations since 1970. He was named to the College Sports Information Directors (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame in July 2005 and completed a Masters degree in journalism at the University of North Texas in Aug. 2006. Carter While he was a student at Vandy (1974 honors graduate in classics), he served as an assistant in athletics media relations from 1970-74 and also interned with the Nashville Tennessean. He was a staff sports writer at the Vanderbilt student newspaper, the Hustler, with future writing luminaries Skip Bayless, John (Joe Bob Briggs) Bloom, publisher Walt Potter, author Irv Muchnick, and Don Hemke. He later worked fulltime for the Tennessean; covered Vandy baseball and freshman/JV football/basketball and was a writer for the Vanderbilt Commodore yearbook. In 1974 he moved to Mississippi State University as assistant sports information director (1974-78) under Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame legend the late Bob Hartley. Carter became SID at State from 197886 and was also sports editor for MSU ALUMNUS magazine. In 1986 he was chosen as the final director of media relations for the Southwest Conference and was promoted to assistant commissioner in 1995. From 1996-06 he was director of media relations, assistant commissioner, sports information director, and historian for the Big 12 Conference. The Alabama native was on the National Collegiate Athletic Association Communications Committee, 1994-96; is a 37-year member of Football Writers Association of America, the National Football Foundation and U.S. Basketball Writers Association. He has been President of the National College Baseball Writers Association (1991-92), NCBWA South Region Director, 1979-91; at-large Member of the Board of Directors, 1992-present; chair of the NCBWA All-America Committee since 1993; and Executive Director of NCBWA since 1999. Carter has also been dedicated to several charitable and service organizations such as the Starkville (Miss.) Area Chamber of Commerce, 1978-86; Mississippi and Texas Special Olympics, 1979-86; the Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series, Mississippi and Texas High School Football and Basketball All-Star Games, Society of American Baseball Research (national convention publications’ chair in 1993-94), and numerous church commissions. He has worked 24 NCAA Baseball World Series, one NCAA Football Championship contest, six men’s and women’s NCAA Basketball Final Fours, 37 total bowl games, 23 NCAA Baseball Regional tournaments, 14 NCAA basketball regionals, and 26 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classics. had the privilege of spending a week last winter on board the US aircraft carrier Stennis as it returned from a deployment to the Middle East. I lived for the week embedded with the officers of a fighter squadron and observed the carefully choreographed action aboard the Stennis. The dedication, skill, and discipline aboard were impressive.

Diving into media as a new student Vanderbilt Student Media welcomed 36 first-year students to campus Aug. 15-17, before their classmates moved in, for Student Media's fifth Media Immersion workshop. The media education program for new students was expanded in 2012 to include more participants in an effort to expose a larger group of new students to various opportunities to learn and develop media skills. Media Immersion participants joined in one of three tracks -- television, writing, or photo, led by adviser Jim Hayes, alumnus Charlie Euchner, and senior Chris Honiball, respectively. They also interacted with upperclass Student Media leaders during social activities and dinners off campus.
