hello... so happy that you made it this far. now we would like to give you some instructions. these instructions will just take some minutes each day. we suggest you do them everyday, at dawn or at dusk. it is up to you. we would really like to get to know you a bit better 1) write down your thoughts non-stop for one minute.

Algorithm City Welcome!

When participants entered the city they were greeted by a couple of rules. Rules they had to accept as a term of condition for entering and inhabiting the city. Much like the unwritten rules of our own society we live in the rules implied good citizenship and respect to others.

This was also the first time participants first got a good look of the Algorithm. She only communicated through a black void and a robotic voice.

The Rules stated the following: 1. Don't change the Welcome page please.

2. Check the tabs at the bottom of the page and visit the different parts of the city.

3. First go to 'Check in' and fill out the registration.

4. Check out the program of the day and participate in the assignments.

5. During the breaks, go wild on all the other tabs. Feel free to add content. Write, create, build, add music or pictures, ...

6. Let's go places and have fun!

There's lots to discover in the new city. First of all: whenever you're lost you can go to the Check-In. There's a helpdesk for all your questions.

Algorithm City Check-in Before exploring the city participants were asked to register with a name, age and gender of their choosing. We wanted to keep the workshop anonymous and keep it as genuine as possible and to make it look more like a city, with a diverse group of citizens.

Algorithm City Club HomeParty This is where the participants first started to interact with each other. Some avatars were set-up before to facilitate the interaction between the participants. In the Club Homeparty we asked the participants to come up with a word-associated playlist that could be played in the background while they mingled and got to know each other.

Cultural District Soundtrack of the city The week before the workshop we asked participants to create daily routines based upon a set of instructions.

In the Cultural District we put different pavilions to get the participants to create new material based upon a couple of these submissions.

Algorithm city sounds outstretched questioning; what is time really? The soundtrack for this district is made

by Studio Claus. He combined all the one minute sounds we received and processed it into an hour soundscape that sounds out of this world.You can listen to the soundtrack here

Cultural District Poetry Corner One of the more interesting pavilions in this district was the Poetry Corner. Here participants created poetry based upon the thoughts that the other participants had written the week before, we created an exercise in which they received the thoughts of someone else and processed them into new thoughts. By doing this we give a voice to the fictional inhabitants that live in Algorithm City.

Here we grouped some of the best examples we could find.

Cultural District Graffiti Wall To give the fictional inhabitants of the city a personal fingerprint, we asked the participants to send in outlines of their hand filled in with a pattern of their choice.

We put all these hands on the infamous graffiti wall. A piece of art that is a reflection of this new society in the best possible way.

Algorithm City The Park Every city needs green area's, so does Algorithm City! In this area we asked the participants to have a stroll in the park, plant some trees have a dip in the water pond, ect...

The Park Impressing Mother Nature Because we have to care about the planet's environment, in this part of the city, people could impress Mother Nature by playing her a song, writing her a love letter, giving her a gift or telling her a joke.

hello my friend, we really enjoyed spending this day with you, we feel it was a really valuable and inspiring day in which we cooperated together in a constructive and shared way. we believe that this way of community building is promising for the future of our society. it was really nice to get to know you a bit better. we created together, we talked, we laughed and last but not least, we bonded together. at first it looked like you stepped foot in strange territory but it was nice to see how you overstepped your boundaries and created a little place for yourself and the others. we hope you will like it here in Algorithm City, maybe we will come around and visit you in the future. we will still hear from each other after today, right? we hope so. thank you and take care.

Reflection do you have a minute is a concept workshop produced by Nerdlab. We wanted to create a workshop/art project that could potential be a mirror of our contemporary society.

Big city life has the tendency to be fast and anonymous, while we still act and react upon each otherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s behavior. Everything is temporary and COVID-19 has torn apart that serendipity we came across in our daily lives.

We are asked to stay home and keep ourselves occupied with personal projects. Nowadays collaborating and contributing to one project with a group of people is harder than ever before. With the do you have a minute project we wanted to challenge particpants by giving them personal instructions and create data. Data on which we can create a ficitional city, with fictional inhabitants based on true human values. By letting participants interact with material produced by others, you create new data that cannot be tracked to one individual person and thus it can be considered as a new fictional character.

This way of community-building was a test to see if this project can become more than what we thought it could be. We are very proud to call this social experiment a success.

We wanted to create a new society. One that is not build upon knowing one another but is built upon the solitary confinement we currently live in. We wanted to create a fictional community that represents living in a city

The map of Algorithm City that you saw in this document was produced after the workshop. Initialy, it was created in a Google Spreadsheet and looked like this after the workshop. If you still want to become an inhabitant yourself and wander around the city, you can do that here. Have fun but be respectfull towards the citizens of Algorithm City. Thank you This project wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be possible without the help or a strong team.
