Het werk van beeldend kunstenaar Hilde Overbergh ontwikkelt zich als een organisme, in nauwe verbondenheid met de alledaagse werkelijkheid waarin wij leven.

Ze maakt schilderijen, beelden, assemblages, collages en installaties. Elk werk bouwt voort op het vorige en, wat haar vooral karakteriseert, met materiaal dat aan geen conventie gebonden is.

Haar werk begint op straat. Daar vindt ze het materiaal waar wij achteloos aan voorbij gaan. Juist daarin ziet zij de potentie van het beeld. Ze verhuist het van de straat naar het atelier waar ze verzamelt en ordent, experimenteert en selecteert. Aan het eind van dat ongoing process is er het beeld dat een intensivering is van de wereld die we kennen en toch niet helemaal. Die fasering in het artistieke proces bepaalt ook de structuur van dit boek: de straat, de studio en het werk als een andere kijk op de werkelijkheid.

Het boek beslaat de periode van 2013 tot 2021. Het wil de samenhang in beeld brengen van een oeuvre dat in de tijd gegroeid is en voort blijft groeien. Het is een boek met een dubbele blik: het registreert een recente geschiedenis en het biedt een open kijk op wat gaande is en komen gaat. De beelden worden begeleid door de essayistische teksten van Frank Maes, Femke Vandenbosch en Frits de Coninck die vanuit persoonlijke en dus heel uiteenlopende gezichtspunten naar haar kunstenaarschap kijken en het werk plaatsen in de context van de eigentijdse kunst.

The work of visual artist Hilde Overbergh evolves like an organism and in close connection with the everyday reality we live in. She creates paintings, sculptures, assemblages, collages, and installations, each work building on the previous one. What characterizes her above all is the use of material that is not bound by convention.

Her work process starts on the streets. It is where she finds material we carelessly pass by. And it is precisely in these things where she sees a potential image. She moves what she finds from the streets to her studio, where she collects and organizes, experiments and selects. At the end of this ongoing process, an image appears that is at the same time an intensification of the world as we know it, and yet not quite. These phases of the artistic process also determine the structure of this book: the streets, the studio, and the works, all as different views on reality.

This book covers the period of time between 2013 and 2021. It aims to visualize the coherence of an oeuvre that has grown over time, and still continues to grow. It is a book with a double perspective: it registers recent history, and it offers an open view of what is going on, and what is still to come. The images are accompanied by the essayistic writings of Frank Maes, Femke Vandenbosch, and Frits de Coninck, who look at Overbergh's artistry from personal and very different points of view, and who install her work in the context of contemporary art.

1. Along the Way Hilde Overbergh's work resonates with urban spaces and with traces left behind by humans. The traces in question are not spectacular eye-catchers. They are not the shiny office giants, nor the flows of cars, or shop windows overloaded with luxury.

The traces Hilde Overbergh chooses are things on a human scale, things that have lost their luster, and that play second fiddle. They are what you see while biking through the city, just in passing by, on your way to something unrelated. The things that don't seem to matter, and that we observe from the 10

De sporen die Hilde Overbergh oppakt, zijn de dingen op mensenmaat, zaken die hun glans hebben verloren en nog slechts een bijrol spelen. Het is wat je fietsend door de stad kunt zien, gewoon in het voorbijgaan, op weg naar iets heel anders. De dingen die er niet toe lijken te doen en die we vanuit

de ooghoeken waarnemen. De afgesleten strepen van een zebrapad, graffiti op de muren, containers met bouwafval, de stroken roodgeverfd asfalt die het fietspad markeren, verdwaald karton, reflecterende tape, weggewaaide plastic dopjes, en op de stoepen afgedankte matrassen en kapotte meubels die wachten op de vuilnisophaaldienst. Een vergeten stilleven met de hartenklop van de levende stad. Het zijn de dingen die je onderweg vindt, zonder dat je ze zoekt. Want wat zou een kunstenaar als Hilde Overbergh moeten zoeken? Ze vindt omdat ze kijkt. Veel eenvoudiger kan het niet.

Zo'n stedelijke omgeving die haar inspireert was Berlijn, waar ze in 2020 een tijdje als artist-in-residence verbleef. Uitgerekend Berlijn waar de verandering zich in hoog tempo voltrekt. Waar de sleetsheid van de geschiedenis spiegelt in de dynamiek van de moderniteit. Juist daar vond ze de schoonheid van het obsolete en onverwachte dat haar inspireert tot het scheppen van een eigen, andere werkelijkheid. Hilde Overbergh is niet het type kunstenaar voor wie het atelier een van de wereld afgescheiden domein is waar de dingen worden bedacht en in de stilte van de afzondering worden gemaakt. Hilde Overbergh werkt met wat de wereld haar biedt en die werkelijkheid reikt verder dan het atelier.

The worn-down crosswalk, graffiti on walls, containers full of construction waste, the red-painted strips of asphalt that mark bike lanes, stray cardboard, reflective tape, gone-with-the-wind plastic caps, discarded mattresses on sidewalks, and broken furniture waiting for the garbage collection to arrive. A forgotten still life with the heartbeat of a living city. They are the things you encounter along the way without looking for them. Because what should an artist like Hilde Overbergh be looking for? She sees because in what she is observing. It doesn't get any easier than that.

Berlin was one of those urban environments that inspired Hilde Overbergh. She spent some time in this city as an artist-in-residence in 2020. Berlin is an environment where change takes place at a high pace. Where the jadedness of history is reflected in the dynamics of modernity. It was exactly there where she found the beauty of the obsolete and the unexpected, which inspired her to create her own, different reality.

Hilde Overbergh is not the type of artist for whom the studio is separated from the rest of the world, and where things are contrived in the silence of isolation. Hilde Overbergh works with what the world has to offer, and that reality extends beyond the studio.

2. De realiteit van materiaal Haar werk is een bijzondere vorm van realisme, in de meest pure betekenis van het woord. Ze vertrekt vanuit het materiaal dat ze vindt en dat ze gebruikt om wat het is. Om zijn textuur, om zijn kleur, om zijn geschiedenis, om zijn expressie, om zijn tactiliteit.

En wat je allemaal nog meer over materiaal kunt opmerken. Het materiaal is bij haar een realiteit op zichzelf. Om die te zien is een andere manier van kijken nodig. Een open oog dat de dingen los kan zien van de functie waarvoor ze ooit gemaakt zijn. Los ook van de vertrouwde betekenis en waarde die de dingen gewoonlijk voor ons hebben. Dat materiaal dus. Een bij het afval gedeponeerd matras is in haar ogen geen matras meer maar een ding dat gereduceerd is tot vorm en materie en daarmee volkomen autonoom.

Daar ziet ze de beeldende mogelijkheden in.

Zij ziet de tekening in de matrasovertrek en snijdt die eruit om er in het atelier een tweede leven aan te geven. Of ze staat in haar handen met een rol ducttape, die taaie, grijs glanzende tape die ook het schijnbaar onmogelijke samen kan voegen. En ineens ziet ze in dat materiaal de plastische mogelijkheden, de beeldende kwaliteit. In "Sassy talks and crazy lives" uit 2019 heeft ze twee stroken ducttape in een haakse hoek in het beeld geplakt. Wat begon als een schilderij waar ze vervolgens een andere stof overheen gespannen heeft,

2. The Reality of Material Her work is a special form of realism, in the purest sense of the word. Her starting point is material she finds and that she uses for what it is. Be it for its texture, for its color, for its history, for its expression, for its tactility. Or anything else that's noticeable about material. For her, material is a reality in itself. But in order to see that reality, a different way of looking is required; an "open" eye that can see things separately from the function for which they were once created, and apart from the familiar meaning and value these things have for us. That kind of material.

In her eyes, a thrown-away mattress is no longer a mattress, but a thing that has been reduced to form and material, and that is therefore completely autonomous. She sees visual possibilities.

She sees a drawing in the mattress cover, and cuts it out to give it a second life in her studio. Or she holds a roll of tough, glossy duct tape that can put together the seemingly impossible.

And suddenly she sees the malleable possibilities – the visual quality. In Sassy talks and crazy lives from 2019 she stuck two strips of duct tape on the image surface at a right angle. What started as a painting over which she first spanned another fabric, eventually became an assembly of which the two strips of duct tape are a surprising completion. They impose an angular and compelling shape on an initially painterly image, 11

her artistry. There is no illusion. There is only reality: that of the material and that of viewing.

It is viewing that can make us aware that behind the visible there is also something invisible; that reality is more than the sum its parts. "Are you focusing on the black dot?" ultimately continues to be a mystery considered from this point of view.

And art does not aim to solve the riddle, but rather to enforce it.

Through contrasts and paradoxes, for example.

4. The Studio, a Way of Viewing The artist studio is a magical place where something is made that has never been seen like this before. And which, therefore, no one asked for in advance. Not until it has been created by the artist and thus exists as a world in itself, when we see "it" and attach value to it, does it become art. But "Art" is a label given by the outside world.

The concept of art does not matter at all in the artist studio. In the studio it is all about the work of the artist that is always moving, and that is never completely finished. Only when it crosses the threshold and enters the outside world to stand on its own two feet, does it get declared completed by the artist. And even that is never entirely certain in the case of Hilde Overbergh. Because what is typical to her artistry is that it is an ongoing process. The studio is a delivery room where her work is in a continuous state of birth.

This is what characterizes her way of working and thinking.

Starting something and not, or not exactly, knowing where it will end, and, especially, leaving everything openly ended for as long as possible. That is what we could call the "studio attitude" in its purest form.

A nice example of this open mind is "Perhaps they are not acting" (2021). It's the kind of war that's hard to denominate. Because what is it? A painting, a sculpture, an assembly? Maybe it's all these genres at once. But does it matter which box it fits in? Hilde Overbergh isn't an artist who allows the choice of form to be determined by the content. Rather reversed. She falls for idiosyncratic material that turns out to have unsuspected possibilities, and gets to work with it, partly intuitive, partly deliberate. This leads through trial and error to a form that could not be imagined beforehand. As if the form, and with it the content, is dictated by the material. The matter is the message.

"Perhaps they are not acting" literally started as a painting.

The starting point consisted of an aluminum plate on which the artist painted, and out of which she then cut a rectangular hole, in order to break the illusion of a classic painting. A hole can be a pictorial element as well. Then she cut the whole plate in half, 14

Zo bezien gaat "Are you focusing on the black dot?" over iets wat altijd als wezenlijk is beschouwd voor de schilderkunst, namelijk dat ze een illusie is. Als dat zo is, dan haalt Hilde Overbergh die illusie grondig onderuit. En niet alleen hier. Want dit werk zou je als een pars pro toto kunnen zien voor haar oeuvre en haar kunstenaarschap. Dit zou wel eens een sleutelwerk kunnen blijken te zijn, omdat het iets van het programma laat zien dat zich in haar kunstenaarschap nog steeds verder ontwikkelt. Er is geen illusie. Er is alleen werkelijkheid, die van het materiaal en die van het kijken.

Het is het kijken dat ons ervan bewust kan maken dat achter het zichtbare ook iets onzichtbaars schuilgaat, dat de werkelijkheid iets meer is dan een optelsom van dingen.

Zo beschouwd is en blijft "Are you focusing on the black dot?" uiteindelijk een raadsel.

En kunst is er niet op uit om het raadsel op te lossen maar juist om het te vergroten. Door tegenstellingen en paradoxen, bijvoorbeeld.

4. Het atelier, een manier van kijken Het kunstenaarsatelier is een magische plek.

Daar wordt iets gemaakt dat nog nooit eerder zo gezien is. En waar dus niemand van tevoren om vraagt. Pas als het door de kunstenaar gemaakt is en dus bestaat als een wereld op zichzelf, zien wij 'het' en kennen er waarde aan toe, wordt het kunst. Maar 'kunst' is een stempel dat de buitenwereld zet.

In het atelier doet het begrip kunst er helemaal niet toe. In het atelier gaat het om het werk van de kunstenaar dat altijd onderweg is en nooit helemaal af. Pas als het de drempel passeert en de buitenwereld in gaat om op eigen benen te staan, verklaart de kunstenaar het voor voltooid, en zelfs dat is bij Hilde Overbergh nooit helemaal zeker. Want kenmerkend voor haar kunstenaarschap is dat het een ongoing process is. Het atelier is een kraamkamer waar haar werk in een voortdurende staat van geboorte verkeert.

Dat is wat haar manier van werken en denken karakteriseert. Aan iets beginnen en niet, of niet precies, weten waar het uit zal komen en vooral alles zo lang mogelijk openlaten. Dat is wat we de atelier-attitude zouden kunnen noemen, in haar zuiverste vorm.

Een mooi voorbeeld van die open mind is "Perhaps they are not acting" (2021), zo'n werk dat heel lastig te benoemen is. Want wat is het? Een schilderij, een sculptuur, een assemblage? Misschien is het wel al die genres tegelijk, maar wat doet het er eigenlijk toe in welk hokje iets precies zou passen?

Hilde Overbergh is geen kunstenaar die de

keuze voor een vorm laat bepalen door de inhoud. Eerder omgekeerd. Zij valt voor het eigenzinnige materiaal dat onvermoede mogelijkheden blijkt te hebben, gaat daarmee aan de slag, deels intuïtief, deels overwogen.

En dat leidt met vallen en opstaan tot een vorm die vooraf niet te bedenken viel. Alsof de vorm, en daarmee ook de inhoud, door het materiaal gedicteerd worden. The matter is the message.

"Perhaps they are not acting" begon letterlijk als een schilderij. Het startpunt was een aluminiumplaat waarop ze begon te schilderen en waar ze vervolgens een rechthoekig gat uit sneed om de illusie van een klassiek schilderij te doorbreken. Ook een gat kan een beeldelement zijn. Daarna sneed ze de hele plaat diagonaal doormidden en begon naar een compositie te zoeken, wat uitmondde in een constructie waarbij ze de twee delen weer aan elkaar laste in een hoek van 45 graden. Maar het gevecht bleef. Wat

What to do with the painting that started it all? Which had, in fact, become redundant. The carrier had become the image itself, an important turn of events that's often seen in her work. In, for example, "An unexpected moment", 2016 (p 220) the stretcher frame shimmers through the transparent synthetic fabric like a modernist rectangle. The wooden slats no longer support the statue, but they have rather become the statue.

Because the painting of "Perhaps they are not acting" became redundant, she overpainted the aluminum plate with ordinary lacquer from a paint shop – monochrome light blue. And the depiction that disappeared because of that intervention? That got generously compensated by the found mattress cover placed on top of the image, with lush flowers in a sea of warm blue.
