Tool Fair X 2015 Budapest

FROM “TOOLS FOR CHANGES” TO TOOLS TO “CROSS THE LINE”

IT IS OUR GREAT PLEASURE TO SAY THAT THE ANNUAL TOOL FAIR CELEBRATES ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY.

The 10th Tool Fair will be hosted in Hungary! 10 years of a successful story of a useful adaptable and flexible model. Which is now available in many national languages: French, Italian, Hungarian, Arabic and soon Turkish.

The Hungarian Erasmus+ Youth National Agency, in cooperation with SALTO-YOUTH EuroMed (and with the financial support of 7 national agencies) organizes the annual international nonformal tool market of the youth sector, called Tool Fair X, which aims at presenting, sharing and multiplying new and innovative methods and tools for learning. Each year the event is hosted by a different country, and we are extremely happy to host the anniversary Tool Fair in Budapest at the European Youth Centre Budapest.

The Tool Fair is a place offering the opportunity to test and taste new tools, analyze, exchange and evaluate them, in order to valorize creativity in non-formal education pedagogical initiatives. It’s learning agenda includes: benchmarking - sharing tools and experiences from representatives of all types of actions of the formal and non-formal education domains, being in turn trainer and trainee. Budapest is the place where a river is separating two cities – Buda and Pest – and where it is necessary to cross the Danube to go from one side to the other. The 10th Tool Fair is inviting you to cross the line from Formal to Non Formal education and vice versa and for that I would like to share with all of you these lyrics based on an old song from Johnny Cash: I keep a close watch on this heart of mine I keep my eyes wide open all the time I keep the ends out for the tie that binds Because the Tool Fair is a gold mine, I’ll cross the line I find it very, very easy to be true I never find myself alone when the Tool Fair is through Yes, I’ll admit that I’m a fool for it and for you Because the Tool fair is mine is yours, I’ll cross the line Please keep a close watch on this unique Event Keep your eyes wide open all the time Learn from your friends And let’s cross the line in Budapest!

Bernard Abrignani Coordinator of SALTO EUROMED, on behalf of SALTO network

The key message of this year’s meeting is “Cross the line” – which is a reference to the necessity to develop cooperation between the sectors concerned with the support of young people (youth, formal and non-formal education, non-profit and business). Tool Fair is a great opportunity to bring stakeholders of those sectors together and share experiences or good practices. During the programme, more than a hundred youth workers and trainers, coming from about 20 different countries, will try out a wide range of innovative tools and methods. In addition, Tool Fair X provides an opportunity for the participants to deepen their knowledge, give feedback about the methods, and contribute to their development and dissemination. We look forward to welcoming all participants in Budapest and we aim at providing everyone present with an ideal working environment to ensure a fruitful exchange of ideas and practices. See you soon in Hungary! Gergely Máté on behalf of the Youth National Agency of Erasmus+ Hungary

WHAT IS WORTH TO TASTE AND DRINK?

u

Gulyásleves

Gulyásleves (gulyás is herdsman, leves is soup in Hungarian), is a Hungarian soup, made of beef, vegetables, ground paprika and other spices. It originates from a dish cooked by the cattlemen (gulyás also means herdsman) who tended their herds in the Great Hungarian Plain, known as the Alföld or Puszta in Hungarian. Traditional Hungarian bográcsgulyás (cauldron gulyás) is often still cooked outdoors over an open fire in a cauldron, a Hungarian style “Barbecue”.

Lángos

Lángos is a Hungarian food speciality, a deep fried flat bread made of a dough with flour, yeast, salt and water. The typical toppings are: garlic, sour cream and cheese.

Pogácsa

The Pogácsa is a type of bread baked in the ashes of the fireplace, and later on in the oven, similar to focaccia, found in the cuisines of the Balkans, Hungary and Turkey. It can be leavened or unleavened, but only experienced cooks can make good quality unleavened pogácsa, while the pastry with yeast is easier to make. It can have potatoes or cheese inside and it also has some grains and herbs like sesame, black sesame, dried dill mixed with its flour.

u

Téliszalámi - Winter salami

Winter salami is a type of Hungarian salami produced according to a centuries-old tradition. Made from Mangalitsa pork and spices (white pepper, allspice, and others), winter salami is cured in cold air and smoked slowly. During the dry ripening process, a special noble-mold is formed on the casing surface.

Kürtőskalács

Kürtőskalács is made from sweet, yeast dough (raised dough), of which a strip is spun and then wrapped around a truncated cone-shaped baking spit, and rolled in granulated sugar. During the baking process the sugar stuck on kürtőskalács becomes caramel and forms shiny, crispy crust on the cake. The surface of the cake can then be provided with additional toppings such as ground walnut or cinnamon powder.

Paprika is a spice made from air-dried fruits of the chili pepper. Paprika is often associated with Hungarian cuisine. Over nearly 40 years, the youth sector has developed numerous means to put this philosophy into practice: the European Youth Centres in Strasbourg (since 1972) and in Budapest, the European Youth Foundation (since 1974), the Solidarity Fund for Youth Mobility in co-operation with the International Union of Railways, a partial agreement with the European Youth Card Association, a partnership agreement with the European Youth Information and Counselling Agency ERYICA and the charter on the participation of young people - to name just some of the most outstanding achievements. The programme and policy of the Council of Europe youth sector are developed in close co-operation with governmental and non-governmental partners and deal with youth participation, social cohesion, intercultural dialogue and human rights education.

WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE FACILITATION LINE TO CROSS? What would be new… Challenging… Different… Extraordinary... Useful… for you as a trainer to try in your next training?

Tool Fair X 2015 Budapest

MUSIC “Don’t push me ‘cause I’m close to the edge, I’m trying not to lose my head”

The message – Grandmaster Flash

What songs help to push you to “cross the line”: • from sadness to happy? • from work to play? • from chaos to calm?

Maybe… • Draw a diagram/logo/portrait/sketch/mindmap/something to explain what happened?

• from on-line to off-line?

• Use photos to do something more than share memories – like provoking a thought or feeling or a discussion?

We are sure you already know that music can be a powerful tool; it can change the mood of the group, influence the feelings people have, lift people to moments of inspiration as well as lower them to the right moment for reflection and contemplation. This is because scientists have proven that different music affects different parts of the mind and this in turns effects the chemicals being released in our bodies. Crazy and powerful stuff we know… so how do you use music in your work?

• Choose a music track that is one of your favourites to facilitate the right mood (which might not be the comfortable mood)? If it helps, ask one of the creative facilitation team (although maybe not when they are busy)! Make a note here of your reflections and commitments!

• from the sofa to a night out dancing?

What five songs would be in your musical tool box for learning? Ones that help create positive learning environments? 1. ................................................................................................ 2. ................................................................................................ 3. ................................................................................................ 4. ................................................................................................ 5. ................................................................................................ “Possibilities aren’t always what they seem, reject them and all your choices will be free”.

The TED talk that I absolutely love is by Willie Smits on “How to restore a rainforest”. It shows how even in the worst situations possible, human ingenuity and curiosity help to make the planet a better a place. In this case, Willie Smits was able to restore a rainforest. See: www.ted.com/talks/willie_smits_restores_a_rainforest I listen to so much music that it is really hard to make a choice. One of my favorite albums of 2015 was Sia’s “1000 forms of fear”. CROSSING THE LINE TO RECOGNITION: YOUTHPASS

We know that numbers are not everything, but do you know that nearly HALF A MILLION people have a Youthpass certificate now?! And even more have been through the Youthpass process – although we don’t have statistics about that… Do you have a Youthpass already? If not, read on!

Tool Fair X 2015 Budapest

Here at the Tool Fair, you have the possibility to go through the Youthpass process - think about what you want to learn, check as you go along and identify what you have learnt here - and you can choose to record it in an official Youthpass certificate. It’s up to you – do you want to cross those lines?

What is this thing called Youthpass? The simple answer is that Youthpass is both a process of reflecting on learning gained through an experience and a product; a certificate which confirms participation in an activity organised in the Erasmus+ Youth in Action programme. The Certificate describes the activity, confirms the involvement of the participant and also offers the option of describing the learning that took place. On a broader level, Youthpass is about recognising the value of non-formal learning that takes place during (international) youth work.

25

Why should we recognise non-formal learning? We in the Tool Fair all know that people learn loads of stuff when they participate in international youth activities. But for many people it was hard to say just what they had learned and so others would often say “Oh did you have a nice holiday?” to those coming back from, say, a youth exchange. One of the answers is to provide possibilities for recognising the learning that has taken place. Recognition of learning has at least four major forms:

Personal: I recognise for myself, what and how I have learnt. I can name it. I can describe it to others.

Social: Others give value to my learning. Those others can be family, friends, organisations…

Political: My non-formal learning is given value in wider educational policies.

Formal: My non-formal learning is validated and recognised by educational institutions, employers, etc. There is still a long way to go in this whole recognition business – and Youthpass plays a role. You can find out much more about the impact of Youthpass and its implementation at the dedicated website: www.Youthpass.eu TO HELP YOU DESCRIBE YOUR LEARNING IN THE YOUTHPASS CERTIFICATE YOU CAN USE THE FRAMEWORK OF KEY COMPETENCES FOR LIFELONG LEARNING AND THE 9TH BOX FOR SPECIFIC COMPETENCES AS YOU LIKE! LEARNING IN THE TOOL FAIR

So, why did you come to the Tool Fair? Meet new people and maybe old friends? Get to see Budapest and the famous European Youth Centre? Get some new tools for your youth work tool box? Great! You will! Maybe you also want to challenge yourself and learn some things too? Crossing that line with little holes in it, out of your comfort zone and into your stretch zone!

All the way through this booklet there are pages for you to make notes, to draw – anything that appeals to you. There are little questions along the way, which might help you to reflect about what you are experiencing and noticing. We all learn in different ways at different times. This booklet can help you keep track. Keep it with you – you may be surprised about what and how you have learnt!

28

Really, why did I come here?

29

What are the three major things I’d like to learn here?

DO YOU WANT TO PLAY? Dots and boxes Players: 2 Rules: Each player, in turn, draws either an up-and-down or side-to-side line connecting two dots. When you make a square put your first initial in it. When you cannot make anymore squares, whoever has the most initials wins.

Who can help me in my learning?

When do I plan to take notes or make sketches during the day?
