Digital Stor ytelling Festival and Conference

Wow, what an unbelievable journey it’s been! Celebrating our 5th year in the beautiful Vancouver Convention Centre West Building, which only a few years ago, in 2013, seemed like a faraway vision that I thought I could only have imagined and now look…here we are… truly incredible! It’s with great pride that I can say that my core team and all those that have been with us for a short time over the years, have made this journey for me one that has been rewarding and humbling.

When I made the decision to bring a webseries, now digital storytelling, festival to Canada in 2013, my vision, with that of Paula Hoffmann, my good friend and VWF’s Director of Development, was a focus on how VWF would bring to you, the creators and your teams, a festival and conference that would honour your hard work and dedication and give back to you what all of you deserve. I am very proud to say that Vancouver Web Fest is growing at an extremely rapid pace and it just gets better every year thanks to all past and present attendees and those supporters who couldn’t make it in person but are here in spirit. I am certain that VWF18 is going to bring joy to those who are involved and I look forward to sharing it with all of you. These past years have come and gone so fast and the astounding support and reviews we continue to receive from around the world after each event are heartwarming and have made me extremely proud. I, along with my amazing team, will continue to strive for excellence. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the extraordinary hard working and dedicated Vancouver Web Fest 2018 team. Thank you for being so supportive and so strong. Thank you to our volunteer Board of Directors, our generous sponsors, our local and international community partners, the digital series and pilot creators and their teams, our amazing volunteers, and each and every one of you for supporting and believing in Vancouver Web Fest, we couldn’t have done this without you. Thank you! Enjoy the best of the best screenings, yummy popcorn, panels, workshops, keynotes, VR experiences, networking, awards ceremony and gala, hugs, BUT most of all, just have fun! Yours Truly, Suzette Laqua Executive Director/Founder Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself! Vancouver Web Fest is a Not-For-Profit Organization # S-0062167

VR SERIES The Great Cabo San Lucas, Mexico This Immersive VR experience that takes you over 200 miles into the open ocean of Baja California in Mexico, to a remote island called “Guadalupe”, one of the world famous locations to encounter the mysterious yet vulnerable Great White Shark. Reading Room Venice, USA Drawing from Borges’ The Library of Babel, Nazi book burning parties of WWII and Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, this 360VR story takes the viewer from an infinite library of free thought to the infernal scenes of it’s destruction. Sanity Vancouver, Canada Sanity - A fully-immersive, 360° music video experience. “Sanity” is about interacting with emotion. In this video the subconscious mind is represented by four extreme moods (states of mind), anger, calm, erratic & vacant - to fight or befriend them becomes a choice. Initially the character is very affected by each “state of mind”, and is thrust between them. She begins to realize that she can shift in and out of these moods. In a self-explorative dance through her constant flux of emotions, each state of mind is like character who longs for a moment in the spotlight. Each monologue of emotion plays a role in co-existing and creating a sense of unison within her “Sanity”. The idea is that we decide how we interact with our emotions. We can choose to fight them, hate them, love or accept them. To conclude, our search for Sanity stems from our ability to understand that each “state of mind” is equally important and simply desires to be validated in order to feel more at ease as a whole.

“I do believe in the power of story. I believe that stories have an important role to play in the formation of human beings, that they can stimulate, amaze and inspire.”
