The changing face of GASTOWN

Gastown’s history is well known to most Vancouverites. The city’s first urban centre at a time when such a concept was relatively new, it was named after “Gassy” Jack Deighton, who in the 1860s opened what would prove to be the first of the neighbourhood’s many, many saloons. Although officially declared a National Historic Site of Canada only last year, Gastown’s rich and extensive history has made it a popular tourist attraction for as long as most of us can remember. Untold thousands of visitors flock here every year to take photos of the steam clock and the Gassy Jack statue, and to buy Canadianathemed souvenirs from shops at the western end of Water Street. This magazine, however, is not about

that Gastown. This is about the Gastown that has deservedly earned a reputation for being, quite simply, the most rapidly evolving shopping and entertainment district in Vancouver — a uniquely dynamic and sophisticated patchwork of independent retailers, one-of-a-kind restaurants and bars, artist spaces, and nightclubs and performance venues. If a city’s culture is the collective efforts of its creative and business communities, Gastown is the neighbourhood we should hope is a signpost toward Vancouver’s future. A neglected afterthought of our urban landscape not so long ago, it has been transformed — thanks to some visionary entrepreneurs and artists — into one of its most vibrant jewels.

From a fashion standpoint, Gastown is at the apex of its second renaissance. Once home to a thriving arts scene in the 1970s, local government’s misguided attempt to create a brick-lined, faux-historic tourist district in the ’80s chased most of the independent designers’ studios and storefronts away, replacing them with souvenir shops hawking overseas-made Canadiana. Today, those same cobbled streets lead to the city’s most vibrant fashion district, one that boasts the flagship stores of internationally renowned designers, funky vintage shops, fashion-savvy independent boutiques stocking labels you won’t find anywhere else, and a wealth of up-andcoming designers dreaming up next season’s must-haves in the live-work lofts of neighbouring Railtown.

Gastown PEOPLE: John Fluevog John Fluevog’s roots in Gastown run deeper than most. The internationally renowned footwear designer — whose wares have adorned the feet of Madonna, the White Stripes, and countless others, famous and not — opened his first storefront (with former business partner Peter Fox, under the name Fox & Fluevog) in 1970. After much success, he returned to the neighbourhood in 2008, opening the cathedral-like John Fluevog flagship shop (with in-house design lab) at 65 Water Street. What attracted you to Gastown as somewhere to open your first retail outlet in 1970. John Fluevog: Gastown in the ’70s was very groovy, baby! The long-haired hippies hung out in Gastown — it was a very cool thing to go drinking at the bars here. In those days, the only place to buy interesting clothing was at the boutiques and small shops that littered Gastown. We sold lace-up suede boots in six colours for women, and patent leather knee-high boots for men, also in six colours. The baby boomer kids where touching the lower parts of culture we were told not to mix with. But it was all about love. Our first employee lived in a partner-swapping commune! No one told him that was not a healthy idea. Hey, everyone was experimenting.

You returned to the neighbourhood — after an absence of many years — in 2008. How would you compare the Gastown of 1970 to the Gastown of today? Gastown is back. Some of the same values of the ’60s and ’70s have fueled its resurgence — a rejection of the Yaletown towers and of conspicuous consumption; a more neighbourhood feel. I love the mix of things. What are some of your favourite places in Gastown now? Small independent retailer like Gentille Alouette, Roden Gray, Dutil Denim; Mandula has great original clothes; Bruce Eyewear has awesome glasses. Restaurants? The choice is endless: Boneta, Chill Winston, Jules Bistro... I love being back in Gastown. Call it reliving my youth, or call it the best neighbourhood now to hang out in. I live here, too. It’s back, baby, and I’m digging the groovy love vibes!

Dining Surprisingly, less than a decade ago Gastown wasn’t considered a serious dining destination. While it offered a small number of rooms that were perfectly acceptable for a pint and a casual bite, the idea of coming to the neighbourhood for a meal as memorable as those that could be had, say, downtown or south of the Granville Street Bridge was something no one would have considered. But thanks to a combination of accessible rents, neglected character spaces ripe for renovation, and ambitious chefs and restaurateurs eager to establish themselves off the beaten path, Gastown is now one of Vancouver’s premier eating spots. In the past three years alone, more than a dozen acclaimed restos have opened in the area, with many more on the way. And the creativity isn’t restricted to the plate — you’ll find some of the most charming and cleverly designed dining rooms here, as well as some of the most inventive bartenders.

Gastown PEOPLE: Sean Heather Sean Heather opened the original location of his beloved Gastown pub, the Irish Heather, in 1997 at 217 Carrall Street. It was a brave move at a time when the neighbourhood was a dining no-man’sland. Gastown’s growth since then has happened more or less in tandem with the growth of Heather’s culinary empire: the Irish Heather moved to bigger, more modern digs across the street in 2008, and he now has several other successful restaurants to his name, including Salt Tasting Room and the recently opened Judas Goat. Virtually no one came to Gastown for a good meal and a civilized drink when you opened the Irish Heather. Why did you choose that location? Sean Heather: I could give you a sexy answer or I could give you the truth. (laughs) The truth is I was 27 and broke. I tried desperately not to come to Gastown, but at the end of the day it was all I could afford; it wasn’t because of any grandiose notion of trying to save the neighbourhood... For about the first three months [of business] I thought I’d probably made the biggest mistake of my life, but we just put our heads down and customers started to come. In Gastown in those days, you made yourself a destination spot or you died. Yourself and many of the smallbusiness owners in Gastown seem fiercely protective of the neighbourhood’s character. There’s something that we have down here that nobody else has, and if it were to be invaded by [fast-food restaurants] it would kill some of that. We’re proud of the independent businesses that are here and that have survived — some of them are new; some of them, like mine, have been 14-or-so years in the neighbourhood. So, yeah, we are defensive of that. Other than your own restaurants, where do you like to go in Gastown? I like going to Jules Bistro for steak frites at lunch; the Alibi Room for any number of the weird and wonderful beers they’ve brought in from various parts of B.C.; Deacon’s Corner for breakfast... With four kids, Modern Kid certainly receives a bit of my business.

For the Home Despite it being a relatively small geographical area, Gastown is home to a disproportionately large number of stores specializing in home furnishings and accessories. More importantly, the products found at those stores — whether major pieces like sofas and beds, or small but crucial accents like candles and place settings — often can’t be found elsewhere in the city (or even elsewhere in Western Canada). The reason is small, independent retailers with expansive knowledge and exacting tastes, who deal with specialist manufacturers and distributors from all over the world. And if your own tastes are exacting, too, you needn’t worry — from rustic to ultra-modern, budget-friendly to top-of-the-line, virtually every conceivable style and price range is represented. An added bonus: One-of-a-kind shops mean attentive, personalized service; the “salesperson” you deal with may just turn out to be the owner.

Gastown PEOPLE: DJ P Deady DJ P Deady has been a familiar sight behind the decks at numerous Gastown nightclubs and bars for many years. The neighbourhood has changed significantly in that time, but his ability to fill the dance floor remains. For how long have you been DJing in Gastown, and where? DJ P Deady: Since 2003, when I first played Sonar (R.I.P.), and I’ve since played at the Lotus, Lick, Shine, and currently at the Lamplighter, since the beginning of 2008. The gig at the Lamplighter takes place every Friday night and is called ‘We Salute You.’ It’s a night of mixed genres geared for the dance floor — everything from underground electronica to blog remixes of pop music. How has nightlife in Gastown changed since you started DJing there? It used to be much grittier and have

more of an underground, off-theradar feel to it, whereas now it’s pretty much a shopping, eating and drinking destination for all types. Obviously, it’s much easier to get people to come to Gastown now, so the crowds — and their options — are much larger. What are some of your favourite places in Gastown, during both night and day? For daytime, I enjoy shops like Dream, where I can hear amazing music while checking out local, independent clothing designs at good prices. And for a fascinating, almost bewildering trip through time, I love going to Salmagundi West — antiques, artifacts, novelty items, and creepy old dolls. My favourite place to grab lunch, dinner, or a relatively quiet drink is Six Acres; it’s incredibly warm, welcoming, and has an amazing selection of beers from all over the world.
