FROM THE GVCC CEO

John McDonagh

Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, CEO/President

NEW IN 2019!

We are excited at the start of this New Year to welcome into membership in the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce the members of the Battle Ground Chamber. Following a rich history in Battle Ground for over 50 years the Board of the Battle Ground Chamber decided affiliating with the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce would allow their members access to more business focused programming and a direct connection to the broader Clark County business community.

THE RETURN OF FUN NOTE FRIDAY

This new affiliation allows the Battle Ground business community to maintain its identity and the opportunity to actively support many of the local community events. The Battle Ground Chamber Council, elected by the retiring Board of Directors will serve as a liaison to the GVCC Board of Directors through their GVCC Director, Kendra Larrata of Inkability. The Battle Ground Business community has already been taking part in

literally hundreds upon hundreds of posts these three came out on top as deserving winners of the grants. This program grows in participation by both businesses and their customers supporting them with social media posts. We think this is one of the best ways to reinforce doing business locally and supporting the local merchants and service providers. For every $100 dol-

events supported by the GVCC. More than 130 took part in the 2018 Holiday Luncheon last month to kickstart the holidays with a display of generosity and philanthropy. And, since September, Battle Ground Businesses have been enjoying the North County Leads & Needs meeting at 7:30 AM the 2nd Wednesday of each month at Mill Creek Pub. Welcome, mid & North County businesses, we are excited to include you in the GVCC family.

lars spent at a local merchant between $35 and $50 stays in our community, conversely for every $100 spent at a national retailer only about 10% stays in the local market. Each of our winners were elated and report that winning the grant will make a huge difference to their efforts in the coming months and year.

Our three members winning the social media posting #GVCCgrant2018 contest are all smiles as they receive their checks for $2000. Winning businesses are NW Escape Experience; Rocksolid Community Teen Center and Metropolitan Performing Arts. Congratulations to all the businesses who participated and got their customers to use social media to promote local businesses.

HOME & BUSINESS LOCAL & LONG-DISTANCE PACKING SERVICES & SUPPLIES

Watch for the return of Fun Note Friday – after a very busy 4th quarter of 2018 you can look forward to a weekly installment of FNF. Your reaction to it has been tremendous and I like the opportunity to connect through a bit of humor.

#GVCCGRANT2018 RESULTS Through the generous contributions during the dessert dash at our Annual Dinner three of our members were awarded a $2000 small business grant. NW Escape Experience, Rock Solid Community Teen Center and Metropolitan Performing Arts were the three businesses whose social media posts were judged to be the most deserving. With nearly 150 businesses and

Amy O’Hara

Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors

My first few months as Board Chair have certainly presented me with opportunities for growth. For starters it has been a few years since I last chaired a board meeting – and by a few I mean 30 – so I thank my exceptional fellow board members for their support and encouragement. I have also enjoyed the ribbon cuttings, Business After Hours, and most of all the Holiday Heroes luncheon last month. And as with life in general, growth rarely comes from something we are comfortable with or had planned on so I have done my best to choose to embrace those moments as well and learn all I can. I look forward to more of all of this and will continue to give my whole self to the tasks at hand.

indescribable. It is really, really special. We at the Chamber are thrilled by the success and very eager to grow and develop it. And to who knows what heights? I believe this to be the start of something big. Thinking about the possibilities of WILL reminds me of one of my favorite seminars about the importance of setting a BHAG – a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal. BHAG is an idea conceptualized in the book, “Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies” by James Collins and Jerry Porras where they define it as “an audacious 10-to-30-year goal to progress towards an envisioned future”. To me it was just a little bit more than that: It was thinking grand, thinking out of the box, daring to believe in the seemingly impossible. You can’t create what you can’t imagine so I challenge you all, for your companies, organizations, and for you personally, get a BHAG or three. Dream big, imagine without constraint, pursue it with all you have, and embrace the change because with change comes the opportunities. I look forward to it all.

“Dream big, imagine without constraint, pursue it with all you have, and embrace the change”

What I look forward to most, however, is our next Women in Leadership Lecture Series (WILL) on January 29th. This begins only our second year doing this and it has already become a signature event for the Chamber and, it would seem, the community. For those of you who have not attended (sorry boys!) this is the most spectacular of evenings with not only top-notch speakers, food, venues, but a magic to it that is nearly

Economic Development

Environment

Workforce & Education

A number of issues face economic developers in the 2019 session and there isn’t really one that stands out as much as bridge replacement does in infrastructure.

While always a major issue, the environment and business can successfully exist side by side. In 2019, the Legislature will again tackle the issue of a Carbon Tax, which was rejected statewide by initiative in the 2018 election.

The workforce in our community and the education of our students continue to be critical shared business priorities. These Include the creation of additional career connected pathways for high school and community college students. In addition, the creation of a Center of Excellence in Southwest Washington is supported by the Chamber and its business association partners in Clark County.

Major priorities that made the list include: Support for the Port of Vancouver’s Terminal 1 waterfront development project capital budget request; Funding of a feasibility study to review an additional police academy to be located in SW Washington; Extending the B&O Tax credit to all manufacturers; Reinstatement of the R&D Tax Credit; and Extending the aerospace manufacturing tax rate to all manufacturing categories.

The joint legislative priorities of your business organizations in Clark County ask the legislature to ensure initiatives to reduce or restrict the output of carbon have a neutral or positive impact on global competitiveness through policy alternatives that can build our economy and protect jobs. Other major priorities include: Protecting navigation corridors and hydropower along the Columbia/Snake River System; and Increasing regulatory predictability for businesses regarding permitting (especially water rights, wetlands and stormwater).

Support for WSU Vancouver’s medical school operating budget, and a study to determine feasibility of college tuition reciprocity with Oregon are also on our list of priorities. As always, we encourage participation in the Public Affairs Committee. If you have questions about any of the priorities we’ve listed, please come to a meeting and let’s have a discussion.

2019 NETWORKING TRAININGS FOR GVCC MEMBERS

Ready to grow your business, influence and reputation? Networking with other local businesses is the most time- and cost-effective way to do that. The Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce offers many networking opportunities for members. But without adequate networking skills, even these well-organized events can disappoint. To make sure that all members have the skills and knowledge to get what they want out of their events, the GVCC partners with the DIY Marketing Center again to bring world-class networking trainings in 2019. Dozens of members benefited from last year’s classes.

Especially popular was Networking for Newbies, a beginner level training that surprised and pleased even the most seasoned networkers. This year, two new classes are in the series; How to Work a Room and How to Build Your Business with Networking debut in 2019. The Networking for Newbies rounds out the series. The three-class series runs February through May, and repeats September through November. The GVCC subsidizes the classes for members by offering a 100% discount on the Networking for Newbies class, and a 60% discount on the two new classes. Each class includes a 4-page workbook with tools plus networking resources listed for easy reference.

GVCC Business Services Coordinator

When folks ask me what I do at the Chamber, I begin with my trusty elevator speech, which sets the stage for further conversation without overkill. I am the Chamber’s WorkSource connection. If you want help posting jobs, finding job candidates, screening job candidates, hiring new employees, or you need help with downsizing, call me. I will get you connected with the right expert at WorkSource. 2018 was a good year as I stepped into the role of Business Services Coordinator for the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. It gave me the opportunity to meet and work with a group of professionals at WorkSource who are committed to helping jobseekers find their next great job, and employers find their next perfect new hire.

Over the past year, I have watched the professionals at WorkSource innovate ways to bring employers and prospective employees together, assisting each in meeting their employment goals. I look forward to many more of these events in 2019.

WorkSource’s primary focus is building employment in five business sectors (Technology, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Construction & Transportation).

potential candidates for entry level positions. WorkSource has a number of efforts planned to help employers make those connections with younger employment candidates.

If you are looking for entry level employees, your opportunity to get in front of hundreds of high school seniors who are interested in starting their work careers is at the 2019 Youth Employment Summit. WorkSource and the Chamber are seeking employers to participate in the 2019 Youth Employment Summit on March 19th. Last year we had 30 employers and 650 high school juniors and seniors participate. We are planning for an even greater participation this year.

“...employers are once again looking to teens and young adults as potential candidates for entry level positions.”

In addition to individual employer outreach, WorkSource produced 18 in-house Job Fairs connecting 187 employers with 1,509 job seekers during 2018 at their Vancouver location at 204 SE Stonemill. They plan to continue those throughout 2019.

In this very tight labor market, as middle aged and older adults are moving back into jobs more suitable to their age and experience, employers are once again looking to teens and young adults as VANCOUVER VISION MAGAZINE GREATER VANCOUVER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Veteran hiring.

In the spring and fall of 2019, WorkSource is planning to hold events aimed at introducing high school seniors to manufacturing careers. Two events last year brought a dozen and a half manufacturers together with high school seniors interested in manufacturing careers.

Veteran employment is an area overlooked by many employers. WorkSource through the YES Vets Program and two Veteran hiring events partners with Joint Services Support Group and Work for Warriors to focus on introducing vets to employers. The result, numerous employers purposely bringing vets into their workforces. Last year two Veteran hiring events saw employers from healthcare, advanced manufacturing, construction, hospitality, law enforcement and transportation introduced to over 200 vets. 2019 will bring additional focus to

Look for information about these events and programs in future issues of the Vision magazine. If you would like to learn more about events or programs offered by WorkSource and WorkForce SW, drop me a note at pmontague@vancouverusa.com. I’ll be glad to get you connected with the best resource.
