Stepping into Fall We’re all familiar with the glimpse of warm weather in the PNW, and rightly so it seems as if this Summer was a blink. While we are eager for family vacations, enjoying the warm evenings on the patio, the abundance of fresh fruits and veggies, and golfing (for those exclusively fair-weather players) - all of a sudden it’s September. As we grab our umbrellas and adjust our driving habits, it’s best to focus on topics and events to keep us busy during this long stretch of rain approaching. There’s plenty in store at the Chamber to keep you engaged during Fall, especially programs to Move your Business Forward. Check out the events listed on the back, or turn to Page 11 to learn more about our Fall Workshop Series: Fostering Growth in the Workplace.

Canvassing in Battle Ground For the first time in a few decades, the Chamber will gather staff and volunteers to participate in an old-fashioned canvassing in the City of Battle Ground. As we incorporated the former Battle Ground Chamber members into our membership, we are looking to talk with existing and Future Members in the “-604” to impress on them how important they are to the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce as are those located in the various cities and unincorporated areas across Clark County. Of those previous BG Chamber members became a part of the GVCC in the unification, nearly 75% of them have renewed, and we’re not counting those who were already members of GVCC. We’re looking forward to connecting with those who have continued to show interest, to better personalize Chamber services to fit the needs of their businesses. Additionally, we will be speaking with that 25% who chose not to renew as well as Future Members to discuss the value of the Chamber, hoping to kindle the enthusiasm of connectionmaking in our community. If you’re out and about in Battle Ground on Friday, September 13, be sure to look for our Ambassadors, members of the Battle Ground Chamber Council, as well as GVCC Staff making our way from business to business to say hello. Our Outgoing Chair, Amy O’Hara

has been of incredible value as a catalyst for Moving Business Forward within our community. As we introduce Kevin Getch as our 2020 Chairman of the Board (more on Page 12), it goes without saying Amy’s had an important impact on the Chamber’s success this year. On behalf of the GVCC team, we’d like to say thank you to Amy O’Hara for her contributions as the 2019 Chairman of the Board. And to Kevin, you have some big heels (rather, premium comfort shoes) to fill.

It’s widely known that our current Chairman (or should I say Chairwoman) is someone who prides herself in the connections she makes in our community, no matter the topic. When you initially meet Amy O’Hara, her kindness, sense of humor, and enthusiasm for others speak volumes. Admiring this, it’s made me wonder how she can successfully balance owning a thriving business, balance being a supportive mom of two, and the balance of her important role as the Chair of the GVCC Board of Directors, all with such ease. As John would say, “Amy is one of those leaders that leads quietly, often behind the scenes but always with a focus on where we need to go as she lends a hand to get there.” Her passion for the Chamber’s mission and the programs we provide our members has been a motivation for us to keep raising the bar. Still, as a member of the Chamber, she attends events without introducing herself as her role at the Chamber, but rather with “What’s your story?” to anyone she meets. No one likes a poster who always talks about themselves and that goes for businesses too. Figure out what your ideal demographic cares about and communicate those aspects of your business. I AM TRULY HONORED

AND VERY EXCITED TO BE ABLE TO SERVE YOU AND THIS AMAZING COMMUNITY AS THE BOARD CHAIR OF THE GREATER VANCOUVER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. THE CORE DRIVER IN MY LIFE IS TO HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT AND HELP AS MANY PEOPLE AS I CAN. When I was younger, my mother always used to talk about the ‘Ripple Effect.’ She would say, “You know how when you toss a pebble in a pond, it creates ripples that eventually cover the entire pond? Our actions are just like that. No matter how small, they can have this same ripple effect.” When my mother passed away from ovarian cancer in 2005, I dedicated my life to continuing the ripple that she started. This is one of the reasons that I'm so excited to be part of such an amazing organization. In this position, I can continue to have a positive impact on all of its members and this community. I moved to Vancouver a little over 13 years ago with my wife Jennifer and my two children, Mariah and Brandon. At the time, I moved for the great schools and the fact that you could get a house for a lot less than you could in Portland. It didn’t take long and I fell in love with this community. I could list numerous reasons why SW Washington is so special, but ultimately it comes down to the people. I’ve been a member of the GVCC for over eight years, joined the board in 2016,

and have tried to give as much as I could. However, I feel I have received much more from the lifetime relationships I’ve developed. It’s refreshing to be surrounded by so many good people that truly care. These people don’t just sit around, they take action, and our community is all the better for it. We have something special here in SW Washington, and I want to make sure that we continue to nurture and build on this fantastic foundation. In 2009, I decided to trade in a steady income and benefits for no income and no benefits to start Webfor, a creative and digital marketing agency. I often worked 80 hours a week for the first four to five years. It sounds crazy to me now, but I made less than minimum wage as a business owner for years. Needless to say, I love the entrepreneurial spirit. It’s the willingness to take risks, get out of your comfort zone, and challenge yourself to do, be, and give more. It’s this personal growth that allows me to serve better. For more than 10 years, Webfor has helped hundreds of businesses and thousands of employees. I’m extremely passionate about the positive impact that businesses can have

TEN YEARS IN THE MAKING

The Public Affairs Committee works diligently on your behalf to ensure business owners and community members, are represented when it comes to progressive thinking and changes proposed by our legislature and local jurisdictions. Don Russo of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, and Nelson Holmberg of Southwest Washington Contractor’s Association (SWCA), CoChairs of the Committee, guide the conversations to cover topics relevant to our members. Here are a few updates from our Co-Chairs regarding the I-5 Bridge Replacement Project. PURPOSE & IMPORTANCE: EVALUATING THE NEED In July, Frank Green, a structural engineer with Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), appeared at the Public Affairs Sub-Committee meeting that focuses on the Bridge Replacement Project. In addition to reviewing the inventory of planning data, Frank reviewed the purpose and need for the replacement bridge by using the following rationale: Growing travel demands and congestion, vehicle safety, impaired freight movement, limited public transportation options, limited

14

bicycle and pedestrian facilities for crossing the Bridge, as well as seismic vulnerability. Some important evaluations include that the south bound lanes exceed 60 years, while the north bound lanes are now over 100 years old. Also, as many know, the Interstate Bridge is the only lift span bridge on the I-5 corridor from Mexico to Canada. The annual cost in operations and maintenance for the Bridge is the sum of $1.2M. Further, by the year 2040, capital maintenance on the Bridge will amount to $282M. The 2019 legislature provided $35M in funding aimed toward replacement: $17.5M for a local project, and an equal sum for the commencement of the planning process. UNITING WASHINGTON & OREGON The next steps include engaging the key stakeholders, including representatives from both Washington and Oregon. In Washington, those stakeholders include WSDOT, City of Vancouver, the Regional Transportation Council (RTC), and C-Tran. In Oregon, Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), City of Portland, Metro, and Tri-Met. Mr. Green noted that coordination and collaboration between the stakeholders in Washington and Oregon are imperative. Going forward, it is important to note that much of the prior geo-tech work and the archeological work from the last go-around is still valuable and there is no need to have this work redone. Mr. Green predicts that both Washington and Oregon will jointly

petition the federal government for an extension on the advance of federal funds to avoid having to pay those funds back. The Replacement Bridge Team’s first progress report is due to the Washington Legislature on or before December 1, 2019. TEN YEARS FROM NOW The steps we’re taking, as well as the stakeholders’, are moving progress forward to work toward the common goals of safety and economic development on behalf of both Washington and Oregon. With these joint efforts, a timeline on moving forward can be broken down by the following estimations: • 3-5 years to complete environmental work • 3-5 years to obtain federal approval for project construction, as it takes about $50M- $100M to get a project to this point • 4-5 years to complete right-of-way acquisitions In the case of this progress going according to plan, we could be driving on a new Interstate Bridge in the short timeline of about ten years. The Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and the Public Affairs Committee, believe it is important to continue to express the need for a replacement bridge and to use every opportunity to work with our partners in Oregon. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work THE AMBASSADOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

There’s no “I” in team, but there’s a “U” in Greater Vancouver. You see them at Chamber events and it would be hard to miss them all over social media donning the infamous red coats. You might ask yourself, “who are these people, wearing red around town, with direct access to local dignitaries and business decision makers…and how do they seem to know what’s going on in the Vancouver community before everyone else?!” These business men and women make up the GVCC Ambassador Team who have been supporting businesses in the Greater Vancouver community for over 3 decades. This staple program at the Chamber is growing stronger each year. The Team consists of volunteers within the Chamber membership whose organizations have graciously allowed a staff-person to contribute their time to assist the GVCC with various activities and events. Most noteworthy, the Ambassador’s role is to help inform, involve, and welcome new members, meanwhile encouraging meaningful and beneficial participation in Chamber programs. Ambassadors also help to raise awareness of not only their own company but most importantly the businesses in the community through Ribbon Cuttings, social media recognition, and one-on-one connections. With the Chamber growing in membership numbers and program offerings, we will be growing our Ambassador team to include members with interests in donating their time and savvy in areas such as networking, social media, member mentorship, and public affairs to name a few.
