Older adults coping better with pandemic: UBC study

A

homeschooling children and unemployment,” added Klaiber.

dults in their senior years have coped better emotionally with the pandemic, compared to people in the lower age brackets, according to research released recently from UBC.

“They are also more likely to experience different types of ongoing non-pandemic stressors than older adults, such as interpersonal conflicts.

The research in the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences, states that adults aged 60 and up have done much better than younger adults (18–39) and middle-aged adults (40–59).

“While older adults are faced with stressors such as higher rates of disease contraction, severe complications and mortality from COVID-19, they also possess more coping skills to deal with stress as they are older and wiser.”

Based on daily diary data collected between mid-March and mid-April of this year, the researchers found that older adults experienced greater emotional well-being and felt less stressed and threatened by the pandemic.

The study also reveals older and middle-aged adults experienced more daily positive events — such as remote positive social interactions — in 75 per cent of their daily surveys, which helped increase positive emotions compared to younger adults.

“Our findings provide new evidence that older adults are emotionally resilient despite public discourse often portraying their vulnerability. We also found that younger adults are at greater risk for loneliness and psychological distress during the pandemic,” said Patrick Klaiber, the study’s lead author and a graduate student in the UBC department of psychology. For the study, the researchers analyzed data from 776 participants aged 18–91, who lived in Canada and the U.S. and completed daily surveys for one week about their stressors, positive events and their emotional well-being during the first several weeks of the pandemic.

“While positive events led to increases in positive emotions for all three age groups, younger adults had the least positive events but also benefited the most from them,” said Klaiber. The time period was selected as it was likely to be the period of greatest disruption and uncertainty as local, provincial and state governments began issuing stay-at-home orders. Klaiber says the difference in reported stress levels may be a result of age-related stressors and how well the different age groups respond to stress. “Younger and middle-aged adults are faced with familyand work-related challenges, such as working from home,

“This is a good reminder for younger adults to create more opportunities for physically-distanced or remote positive experiences as a way of mitigating distress during the pandemic.” The researchers hope their findings would help inform the development of programs and strategies to bolster mental health for adults of all age groups. If it's anything like what Sanaz Mazinani imagines, expect to see even more water and glaciers - albeit of the floating variety - than already exist in the area. The Toronto-based artist is responsible for creating the "speculative garden" that comprises All that Melts: notes from the future-past, the latest installation at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s public art space, Offsite. The installation opens to the public tomorrow, July 25. Mazinani's work envisions what Vancouver will look like in the year 2080, in

which she anticipates global temperatures will have melted glaciers around the world, causing ocean levels to rise dramatically and forcing coastal cities like Vancouver to adapt accordingly. In this "dystopic future," significantly longer, drier and hotter summers mean the Lower Mainland would see certain species of flora thriving, while others would suffer. These environmental conditions provide the framework behind All that Melts, "a work that reflects on the past, present and future consequences of climate change in Vancouver,," the gallery ry explained in a release. To that end, Mazinani is transforming the downtown Vancouver public art rtt space "into a cru rucial u piece of environmental infrastru ructu u ture." u

Vancouverites dropping by the space will first notice its perimeter wrapped with "digitally manipulated images of glacier forms that are in contrast to native flora of the region," while five sculptures scattered throughout a reflective pond represent glaciers, or rather "preserved cultural artifacts drifting in their own meltwater," through this futuristic lens. The multi-media installation also features numerous small garden plots surrounding water catchments, one aspect that was created in collaboration with Hives for Humanity, a Downtown Eastside-based non-p profit organization committed to education and ski kill i training towards a greater understanding of natu ture u and bee cultu ture. u The plants found within the installation were carefu fully u chosen by their "inability tyy to surv rvive v in the fragile conditions of Vancouver’s forecast

climate in 2080," according to the release, "thereby recognizing a sense of loss." Mazinani's creation speculates "about how things could be," the gallery writes, calling the installation "one vision of a future history; a mythological space inhabited by the consequences of its recent past, a story of the earth as told by the culture that produced it." Its goal? To prompt viewers to reflect "on our troubled present," all in an effort to hopefully elicit a different, more desirable future than the one the globe is currently on track to see. Alll that Melts: notes from Al the futu fu uture-past u will remain open to the public until Feb. 15, 2021. Offsite is located at 1100 West Georgia Street, betw tween w Thurlow and Bute. The public art rtt space is organized by the Vancouver Arrt Gallery Art ryy on behalf lff of the City ty’s y public art rtt program. Sanaz Mazinani's work marks Offsite's 20th installation. Organizer of Third Beach drum circles speaks out after massive crowd gathers

T

he co-ordiantor of the Brahm's Tams Official Drum Circle is speaking out after a massive crowd of people gathered on Third Beach for a drum circle last week. Vancouverite Brahm Olszynko runs a Facebook Group called "Brahm's Tams Official Tuesday Drum Circle" for the group that ordinarily gathers every sunny Tuesday on Stanley Park's Third Beach for a drum circle. However, he says he postponed the circle until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an email, Olszynko tells Vancouver Is Awesome that he pinned a post in the group back in March stating all drum circles were postponed until the authorities said large groups were permitted. Following his initial post, he continued to add more posts reminding people to stay safe and not go out there. "It is very, very disappointing to have had so many people send me the news articles, which literally name Brahm's Tams in it," writes Olszynko. "I have received a few nasty emails, but not many. Yes, a lot of backlash publicly. Our reputation is damaged because of this. A lot of people writing publicly all over the Internet what horrible people we are. How irresponsible. I have personally been called a prick at least 50 times (lol) BUT I truly understand why people would feel angry and upset. I do too."

Olszynko adds that he feels the people who partied on the beach likely increased the number of positive COVID-19 in the city, and that months of hard work will likely be lost with this type of behaviour. "We believe in social distancing and wearing masks and not being part of a group that is over 50 people. The drum circle attracts way more than 50 people which is why it is still postponed. We are waiting for the authorities to say that 100+ people can gather, which will be our sign that we can get back out there." Olszynko began the drum circle in 2005, when he first moved to Vancouver from Ottawa, to honour the Tam Tams in Montreal. And, of course, "for the love of rhythm, unity and community."

"Tam tam is the slang for Djembe Drum and my name Brahm happens to rhyme. I would bring 10 Djembes with me and put them in a circle for anyone to play, so these tam tams were in fact Brahm's tams, and that is how the name was created. The name stuck past the drum circle and now Brahm's Tams is actually my stage name when I drum." Over the next 11 years, Olszynko says he brought his Djembes to the beach every sunny Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. and drummed his heart out. As he did, the number of drummers who joined steadily grew. "Our first drum circle had three guys and four dancers. By 2018 we had over 60 drummers and over 1000 people attending on a beautiful August day," reminisces Olszynko. Olszynko says that there is now a second Facebook group called "Tuesday Drum Circle @ 3rd Beach", which is hosted by someone else. "He is literally just a guy who joined our circle in year 9, like anyone else joins our circle. Except [name] said "I like this. I think I'll take it". He and his buddies were the ones who advertised for the drum circle the past two Tuesdays," alleges Olszynko. "Those posts, which have now been deleted since this all came to a head, were literally inviting thousands of people to go to Third Beach. Covidiots I think is the term being thrown around for this type of behaviour." The BC Centre for Disease Control reports that people in their twenties had the highest number of new COVID-19 cases in the province last week. According to the British Columbia Weekly COVID-19 Surveillance Report for July 21 to 23, the age group with the largest number of new cases in the last week were 20-29 year olds, making up 83 of 222 new cases or a staggering 37%. Cumulative incidence remains highest in the Lower Mainland. However, the largest number of new cases in the last week was reported

by Interior Health. The report also states that the likely source of infection for most cases was contact with a local case or cluster.

Four Vancouver NPA board members resign

F

our board members of Vancouver’s Non-Partisan Association political party announced their resignation Friday.

In a July 24 letter to NPA president David Mawhinney and the party’s board of directors, Jane Frost, Corey Sue, Ginny Richards and Marie Rogers listed a litany of concerns and accused the party of becoming irrelevant. “The current NPA board lacks enthusiasm and energy to add their voices about the important issues under discussion in our community,” the letter said. “These past four months, while the city has gone through unprecedented upheaval, the NPA board’s voice has been silent and unremarkable. It is beyond frustrating. It is inexcusable. It renders the party irrelevant.” They described the 2018 election as a watershed moment in the history of the party when it elected five women to council, one to school board and one to park board; Coun. Rebecca Bligh has since left the party and is now an independent. Rost, Sue, Richards and Rogers said they hoped to be part of an organization that increased the party’s membership, strengthened communications with current and future members and prepared for the 2022 election. “We believed that by getting organized, raising a strong voice on social media, helping with potential candidate searches and fundraising, the NPA would be in position to win the next civic election,” the letter said. “However, we are lone voices on the board. We wanted an inclusive city and a party that embraces the NPA membership.” Some of the four have been long-time

+

supporters of the NPA and they said it saddened them to see how ineffective the board has become.

“We have tried for the past few months to contribute our efforts to move the party into action, with notable lack of support from our fellow board members,” the letter said. “Recently, we called for a board meeting, after four months since the previous one, for the most part, board members were unresponsive and disinterested. Or saying it could not be done under the NPA rules, ignoring the B.C. provincial pandemic change to the Vancouver Charter.” They finished their letter by saying, “Accordingly, it is with heavy hearts we tender our resignations as directors from the NPA board, even though we remain aligned to the NPA principles of civic activism and social values of the day.” Glacier Media left a phone message for Mawhinney that was not returned before this story was posted. The party’s board was the subject of controversy in December 2019 after Bligh resigned from the NPA to sit as an independent. At the time, Bligh said she had concerns the party had an affiliation with the anti-SOGI movement. SOGI stands for sexual orientation and gender identity. It’s a term often associated with school curriculum. Its main tenet is inclusion of LGBTQ students. “I stand for inclusion — no matter what, and there’s no debate around it,” Bligh told Glacier Media at the time. “It’s a matter of integrity for me and my family values. I’m a queer woman. My own lifestyle, my own identity feels called into question.”

More stories on local news at VancouverIsAwesome.com

Bligh accused the party of shifting to the far right of the political spectrum, pointing to the addition of board member Christopher Wilson, a former bureau chief of the far-right Rebel Media founded by Ezra Levant. Wilson is the same person who called former federal environment minister Catherine McKenna “Climate Barbie,” which Bligh described as a misogynistic comment. Bligh also said the party’s treasurer, Phyllis Tang, has or had an affiliation with the anti-SOGI movement. Recently, NPA school trustee Fraser Ballantyne came under fire for comments he made during a school board meeting related to a proposal to cancel the police school liaison programs in Vancouver schools. “The Caucasian kids are actually the visible minority,” he said at the June 22 meeting. “So when we get a sense from the population

of our secondary schools and elementary schools, I think it’s really important to hear what they have to say about it and their feelings of the relationships that have been developed over the years. I think a number of trustees will be very surprised at the value of what their connectedness is to this program.” Ballantyne apologized the next day via Twitter. “I’m sorry I misspoke at last night’s board meeting,” he wrote. “My comments were in no way intended to detract from the importance of hearing from Black, Indigenous and other racialized students and communities. I sincerely apologize to those who were offended by my comments regarding the [school liaison] program.” By Mike Howell

and altered documents, including fake federal tax filings and altered incorporation documents, in the loan application.

Mukund Mohan, chief technology officer of BuildDirect.com Technologies Inc., was taken into custody Thursday (July 23) in Washington state after being accused of fraudulently seeking more than $US5.5 million in loans from the U.S. Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) and then laundering the proceeds.

None of the accusations from U.S. prosecutors relate to activities involving BuildDirect, best known as an ecommerce company specializing in home-building supplies.

Prosecutors also accuse him of transferring at least US$231,000 in fraudulentlyobtained loan proceeds to his personal brokerage account.

Mohan is alleged to have used one company he purchased in May 2020, Mahenjo Inc., to make a fraudulent loan application seeking US$431,250, according to court documents.

Among seven loan applications ranging from US$150,000 to US$1.8 million, American authorities say there is no record of any of the companies Mohan submitted on behalf of having paid employee wages or payroll taxes.

The 48-year-old American, who lives in suburban Seattle, is alleged to have submitted at least eight fraudulent PPP loan applications on behalf of six different companies between April and June 2020.

Authorities say the executive falsely claimed to a financial institution that Mahenjo had dozens of employees responsible for US$2.3 million in payroll expenses as of 2019.

Today, a dedicated group of volunteers deliver healthy grocery options and nourishing meals to families and individuals who are HIV+ and homebound each week. Last year alone, volunteers contributed an incredible 8,242 hours of service! On average, A Loving Spoonful provides an average of 100,000 meals each year and has distributed 3 million meals since its inception. A Loving Spoonful’s community of dedicated volunteers, staff, donors, and supporters are tied with their shared core values of food, love, hope, and compassion, playing an important role in people’s lives with their dedication to their clients. The society is proud to lend a helping hand and be a leader in the community offering the best in nutritious, high quality food while serving those in need with compassion and understanding.

generous donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations who made contributions to ensure operations could continue on. The Vancouver Foundation provided a grant that allowed for people on their waiting list to immediately receive service. Some of the other larger grants were thankfully received from TELUS Foundation, MAC Foundation, Vancouver Coastal Health, Community Food Centres Canada, Tableau Foundation, and Scotiabank.

A Loving Spoonful receives approximately 20% in government funding; the remainder must be raised through fundraising activities. After 30 years of providing a compassionate meal service to the community, the society hopes to make it to 31 years. Delicious and sweet Pride candy bags are being sold at select Bank of Montreal locations to raise money for A Loving Spoonful. In commemoration of A Loving Spoonful’s 30th year, any donors who make a donation over $30 from July 27th to August 31st will receive a special rainbow candy treat with their tax receipt in the mail. SPOTLIGHT ON ROBSON

During COVID-19, A Loving Spoonful has seen many generous new volunteers step up to pack meals and drive. As a result, they were able to quickly scale up their distribution to assist groups in the community experiencing food insecurity during a time of uncertainty and difficulty. Some of these groups include single women with children living in the Downtown Eastside, people with disabilities, and low income DTES residents and seniors. During the pandemic, they are now serving an extra 10,000 meals per month.

As one of the city’s oldest commercial areas, Robson Street is acknowledged as Vancouver’s best-known retail district with many of downtown’s top shops and restaurants stationed along the street. Shoppers can indulge in a shopping spree at the high-end Nordstrom department shop, or shop at local favourites Aritzia, Lululemon, and LUSH. For diners, Robson Street has some of the best concentration of international restaurants, including traditional Italian cuisine at CinCin, J&G Fried Chicken and their signature Taiwanese popcorn chicken, and scrumptious Belgian waffles from Nero Waffle Bar.

Early on during the pandemic, the society received some

Travel around the world through the international restaurants that stretch along the Denman strip, including the upbeat Kingyo Izakaya for inventive Japanese tapas, Peaked Pies for authentic Australian baked goods, and Cafe Portrait for traditional Turkish coffee.

VANCOUVER PRIDE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9

SPOTLIGHT ON DAVIE In 1999, the stretch of Davie Street betw tween w Burrard and Jervis was officially dubbed ‘Davie Village’. The lively neighbourhood, or ‘gaybourhood’ as locals lovingly refer to it, is home to Vancouver’s thriving LGBTQIA2S+ community ty. y At the intersection of Davie and Bute is the rainbow crosswalk, a colourful tribute to Vancouver’s Pride celebrations as well as a much-frequented photo op. Commissioned rainbow flag banners from local artist Joe Average also decorate the street’s lampposts. During the Pride Parade, Davie Street has traditionally hosted a large block party tyy in the heart of the Davie Village. As celebrations shift online this year, Vancouverites exploring Davie during Pride can hang out on the patio of The Fountainhead Pub, one of the original neighbourhood pubs and favourite gathering place for the LGBTQ+ community ty. y People can also have a multicultural dining experience at one of the many restaurants in the area, such as Davie Dosa Company for traditional South Indian dishes. Another can’t miss stop is the legendary Little Sister's Book & Art Emporium, an independent bookstore with an extensive selection of LGBTQ+ literature.

SPOTLIGHT ON DENMAN Connecting downtown’s West End to the beach, the south end of Denman Street is a crucial route along the Vancouver Pride Parade, taking the colourful procession from Robson Street down to English Bay.

Stop by D’oro Gelato for a scoop of the frozen treat before making your way down to the beach. You’ll know you’ve reached your destination when you spot the A-maze-ing Laugh bronze sculptures on Denman and Davie, which marks the spot where the Stanley Park seawall meets First Beach.

SPOTLIGHT ON ENGLISH BAY Beach Avenue is the final stretch of the Vancouver Pride Parade, as well as the site of the annual Vancouver Pride Festival on Sunset Beach. Vancouver truly comes alive along this street in the summer months. On hot days, Vancouverites take advantage of the prime real estate on First Beach and Sunset Beach for sunbathing, swimming, beach volleyball, kayaking, paddleboarding, and all around fun in the sun. After an afternoon of relaxing on the sand, swimming in the water, and strolling along the Stanley Park seawall, beachgoers can enjoy refreshing food and drinks at the Beach Avenue Bar & Grill; the newly-opened spot is aimed to be a top hang-out spot for its west coast inspired-fare, original cocktails, and prime patio views of False Creek.

HISTORY OF VANCOUVER PRIDE Organized by the Vancouver Pride Society ty, y the annual Vancouver Pride Parade and Festival began as a way to

bring members of Vancouver’s LGBTQIA2S+ community tyy together with their friends, allies, and supporters through a week-long celebration. Back in August 1973, Vancouver took part in Canada’s first nation-wide Pride Week for LGBT rights, when the Gay Alliance Toward Equality tyy (GATE) organized a picnic and art exhibit in Ceperley Park. Five years later, in 1978, Vancouver held its first pride parade. Today, Vancouver Pride Parade is the largest parade of its kind in Western Canada. Held each year on the Sunday of the August long weekend, the parade commences at noon at the intersection of Robson and Thurlow, moving through the downtown area’s West End along Robson, Denman, and Beach Avenue, and finishing at the Pride Festival site on Sunset Beach. This year, Vancouver is celebrating Pride Week and showing support for the LGBTQIA2S+ community tyy in creative and alternative ways. Acknowledging the current tides, Vancouver Virtual Pride recognizes the importance of showing up and advocating for all diverse communities through the intersectional and all-inclusive representation of causes such as the anti-racism movement and indigeneous rights through their events and programming. In August, the community tyy is invited to attend the 32nd annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival online and support the best in independent queer cinema along with workshops, panels, and more. With 2020’s unique Pride celebrations, the city tyy can continue to celebrate the LGBTQIA2S+ community tyy with caution and care. How we come together may look different, but showing up together for connection, solidarity ty, y and joy remains as our shared purpose.

To our West End friends, and beyond, we wish you a bright and happy Vancouver Pride and your work so fab!

Coast Mental Health | Courage to Come Back

Mariam Nasrri is taking a stand as a voice for the voiceless through her creativity and courage

M

ariam Nasrri is the 2020 Courage to Come Back award recipient in the Medical category. Growing up in the 1980s, Mariam’s childhood was influenced by a civil war that had devastated her birth country of Afghanistan. During the war, her parents tried to protect her and her siblings by moving constantly and providing the children with shelter and education at every chance. However, Mariam couldn’t avoid traumas she both witnessed and experienced. By the time she reached young adulthood, she had survived a number of unthinkable traumas. In 2001, Mariam received sponsorship from the Canadian government to emigrate to Vancouver. She finished high school, enrolled in university in Victoria, and found a paralegal assistant job in the government. Then, in 2009, Mariam fell down a flight of stairs and sustained a concussion, spinal injuries, and damage to the left side of her body. Over the next year of her recovery, the bitter reality dawned upon Mariam that she may have to live with these life-long injuries and chronic pain. She also struggled with PTSD, as the horror of the years of hardships she endured as a refugee

Avrinder Dhillon

added to her loneliness and depression. “In the present, I felt completely lost and in a dark place. In order to go forward, you have to know where you came from. I was given a new life in this country. Giving up wasn’t an option, and that thought kept me alive.” With the help of medical specialists, physiotherapists, and chiropractors, Mariam was able to persevere through lengthy and painful physical rehabilitation. The care and support she received through therapy restored her faith in humanity and helped her regain her confidence.

Mariam reunited with her family in Afghanistan in 2012. Here, she was inspired to move onto her next mission in life — using the creative skills and humanitarian spirit she developed in Canada to help give Afghan women a voice. She video documented the personal stories and struggles of women from different walks of life. Behind veils, she interviewed women who live in remote regions to hear their stories, uncut and uncensored. Mariam is the founder of a Canadian non-profit called Nahz Empowerment of Women and Girls, an organization that

facilitates educational and employment opportunities for vulnerable women and girls in Afghanistan. In an effort to help those who have gone through personal trauma, Mariam decided to share her story openly with others. She has been a guest speaker for various organizations, focusing on mental health, emigration challenges, and violence against women. In overcoming war trauma and migration, Miriam has struggled and triumphed over remarkable obstacles by following her dreams. In choosing to look ahead and give back to her communities in Afghanistan and Canada, Mariam is an example of resilience in the human spirit. “I want to be a voice for the voiceless. I want to be part of a force that helps restore faith in humanity. I hope others can find a way home as I have – a safe place where their spirits can be free and safe, where they are free to love and live.” Find more inspirational stories and to find out how you can support, visit: couragetocomeback.ca.

Free audio walking tour takes you deep into the stories of the eclectic West End

A

new audio walking tour will take you all over Vancouver's colourful and historic West End neighbourhood - all you need are some headphones and good walking shoes.

Launched by Car Free Vancouver and "hosted" by local historian and author Aaron Chapman, the We Live Here - West End Audio Tour covers decades of local history and about 4.9 kilometres of ground. Make your way through the streets of the West End and listen along as Chapman and four other storytellers bring you tales of the neighbourhood, representing a variety of styles and topics (including one segment that you'll want to skip if you're exploring with kids). There's no set time or course - the West End Audio Tour features a suggested walking route, but can also be broken up into smaller treks for multiple strolls, and, of course, stopping to enjoy the view, grab a bite to eat or something to drink, or relax with your walking companion(s) are all worthy diversions. It's truly a choose your own adventure.

Considering a move in these challenging times may seem a little unnerving. But, one look at PARC and you’ll see why life is better here. Book a PARC Safe Suite Tour and you’ll see our team at their Move in best, working to stay ahead now! Car Free Vancouver says they have been looking for ways to keep Vancouverites sticking close to home something fun and unique to do in our own city.

Contemplate vacant spaces, learn stories about special West End residents, and find out more about what went on at night once upon a time. In addition to Chapman offering some local lore in his "West End Stories" segment, hear from the following: Squamish Elder Dennis Joseph, Journalist/Broadcaster and CBC Radio documentarian Pamela Post, writer, poet, podcast host and otter enthusiast Dina Del Bucchia, and beloved author and long-time West End resident Bill Richardson. The tour is bike-able (though two segments will need you to walk your bike to specific locations), and you'll want to time your listening of part five with the operating hours of the Robson Public Market (9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily) as it asks you to go inside. And of course, bring your water bottle and wear sunscreen. Access the West End Audio Tour at www.bit.ly/carfreewestend By Lindsay William-Ross
