BC WAS Awesome (and it still is)

S

ince 2016 we’ve been producing a history show called BC Was Awesome, and it has recently gained popularity with a crowd we hadn’t intended it to reach: children who are essentially being homeschooled during COVID-19.

In it, I act as your host as we travel from Vancouver to far flung corners of our province, digging up mostly-weird stories from the past.

In 30 episodes we’ve covered a wide range of topics including cryptozoology, unveiling the origins of Sasquatch (which the Sts’ailes First Nation calls Sasq’ets) and Ogopogo (known as N'ha-a-itk to the Westbank First Nation). We’ve explained why there’s a spirit bear in captivity in the Cariboo, and gone on the search for one in the wild. We’ve also tried to figure out if there might still be wild camels

running free in B.C., like there were in the late 1800s after somebody imported a bunch of them and eventually let them loose. We’ve inspected the guns of infamous B.C. bank robber Bill Miner, who coined the phrase “Hands up!”, and we’ve tried to recreate photos taken by pioneer photographer Mattie Gunterman, using old-school cameras. Stories about gold? We’ve told those! One about a $150,000 golden skull treasure hunt in Kamloops in the 90s, and another about a gold miner near Barkerville who strangely had to have his wife buried on three different occasions (yes, it was the same wife). Episodes are around 5 minutes long. They’re quick, playful escapes into the unique history of this province of ours, and combined they offer more than a couple hours of entertainment.

We call it “a history show for people who don’t like history,” and it’s also a bit of a travel series as we explore small towns and speak to their residents about the odd tales that have come out of them. Watch all of our episodes for free at www.bit.ly/bcwasawesome, and be sure to show them to your kids and grandkids. Just don’t let them know they might learn something from them!

I

t’s hard to imagine that the ‘skinniest building in the world’ could stay open during the COVID-19 pandemic while adhering to safe physical distancing rules, but it has. Vancouver's iconic Jack Chow Insurance building has been recognized by the Guinness Book of Records and Ripley’s Believe It or Not as the Narrowest Building in the World. And, despite it's extraordinarily slender stature, it remains open for business. But you won't be going inside this sliver of a building in Chinatown anytime soon. In order to keep staff safe, the building uses contactless service. Instead of serving

within its narrow 4 foot 10 inch interior, it’s using the exterior, which spans an entire block wide. That’s 100 feet of frontage. This new process is done with proper social distancing and with sanitization and safety at each of its four stainless steel, glass-enclosed, covered window wickets. Customers are able to park for free at the building’s large parking lot at the back of the building, then they walk around to the front and step up to one of the 4 window wickets where they can lay out their documents on the stainless steel counter and show their ID through the glass. After each customer use, the wickets are sanitized to provide a fresh, disinfected

environment for the next customer. For signing documents, each customer is provided with a safe, untouched by human hands, steel pen with a special device to activate pin pads and kiosks to use immediately and keep as a souvenir. License plate and insurance documents and decals are issued instantly and safely through a special slot at the base of the window with an internal safety flap.Rod Chow, President of Jack Chow Insurance, says that this contactless service is working out extremely well and that customers really appreciate it. ELUS and V.I.A. are sharing stories about how Vancouverites are staying connected during the COVID-19 lockdown.

This week we're shining a light on Mychele and Yaniv. They started the Social Witnessing Podcast during the pandemic, harnessing the power of virtual connection during a time of self-distancing. "The best part of each podcast is asking our guests what positives they’ve taken away from this experience and hear-

ing all the different ways everyday people are persevering and, in some cases, even flourishing during these tough times. Although we make it a point to stress that this experience doesn’t need to be life-redefining for everyone that some days it’s okay just to make it through the day in one piece - listening to our guests share even their smallest triumphs has helped us grow stronger in our own lives and shown us that even though we, as a society, are more separate than we’ve ever been, at the end of the day, we

truly are all in this together." Listen to their podcast at www.bit.ly/socialwitnessing Share your story with us at hello@vancouverisawesome. com and we'll consider it for future publication. By Bob Kronbauer

Metro Vancouver music festival planning to host Canada’s first drive-in benefit concert

Now serving as a benefit concert in support of B.C. musicians suffering from the ramifications of the ongoing pandemic, Summerset is scheduled to take place at the Fort Langley Historic Site from Aug. 28 to 30 this year. The festival held its inaugural event in 2019. “The benefit concert has been designed to adhere to the BC laws around Covid-19, as the BC government releases their phases approach we will make the final decision as to how attendees can view the concert,” wrote organizers on the event’s website. “We know there are ways we can support and serve our music community this summer, and we will be working in partnership with local government and health authorities to ensure our guests, artists, and public’s safety.”

of two to four people. The two-person plots will measure 3.35x3.35 metres, (or 11x11 feet), “allowing room for two people to sit comfortably on a law chair or blanket,” while four-person plots will be 4.5x4.5m, (or 15x15) feet. The aisles and plots will be spaced out according to government regulations, according to the festival. As a third and final way to experience the festival, organizers are planning to offer a live stream of the concert. By requesting a donation from viewers to access the live-stream, they’re hoping it will “enhance the community involvement and fundraising component of this event.” Organizers say the concert will feature a yet-to-beannounced lineup of performers and local entertainment, as well as food and beer. In terms of other health and safety precautions, the benefit concert will be a cash-less event, with all transactions requiring a credit or debit card tap. Organizers say extra hand washing stations and restrooms will be available, while a sanitation team “will maintain rigorous cleaning standards.”

For now, organizers say the venue’s size will allow attendees to pop open their tailgate or throw a few blankets in the bed of a pickup and enjoy the show from their own vehicles. According to the festival’s website, each vehicle will have a designated spot that adheres to social distancing regulations.

Organizers added, “Maintaining social distancing will be strictly enforced.

However, if the drive-in option doesn’t work for you, it’s also offering up “socially distanced plots” for groups

As the list of summertime events cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grow longer, a local festival is stepping in to fill the void and allow British Columbians at least one opportunity to enjoy some live music this summer - albeit from a distance.

The Weather Network Meteorologist Tyler Hamilton says that a "fairly impressive" thunderstorm cell developed right between a stable marine layer and some residual near Vancouver International Airport. He adds that the images that were shared show a "prominent funnel cloud descending from a fairly well-defined thunderstorm."

Hamilton adds that "The storm appeared to feature a classic wall-cloud along with a clearly defined cloud base, but other severe weather parameters didn’t seem to line up in the environment to support a supercell." He notes that "non-supercell tornadoes" sometimes develop in the region, especially with cold air aloft and with low-level instability. These instances often manifest as waterspouts across the South Coast. Lastly, Hamilton remarks that "rotation can initiate below the developing updraft itself. In this case, low-level convergence continues to 'tighten up' as the thunderstorm grows vertically into the sky." By Elana Shepert

VANCOUVER PRIDE SOCIETY

Your Original

Vancouver Pride releases schedule for this summer’s ‘Virtual Pride’ Vancouver Pride is going to look quite a bit different this summer. Following last month’s announcement that Vancouver’s annual Pride Parade and associated festivals would not be taking place this summer, Vancouver Pride Society (VPS) has released its lineup for “Virtual Pride 2020.” Scheduled to kick off on Monday, July 27 with a proclamation and flag rising, highlights of the seven-day event roster include a Virtual Pride Parade live stream, a QTBIPOC pride celebration, drag shows, a day of physically-distanced city hall weddings for LGBTQ2+ couples, “Symphonic Pride” with the Vancouver Symphony, and much more. “I am excited about our new collaborations this season,” said Andrea Arnot, VPS executive director, in a release. “We are partnering with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra to bring you a variety talent show extravaganza and with the Vancouver Writers Festival to produce a queer Writers Showcase.” Some of the events VPS is producing will also shine a light on LGBTQAI2S+ history in Vancouver. “Now people from all over the world can tune into Vancouver Pride festivities and events. Pride cannot be cancelled, only reimagined,” VPS explained in the release. But the switch from in-person gatherings to virtual platforms isn’t the only change the Vancouver Pride Society is implementing this summer. Organizers also announced a new, re-branded look in time for this year’s event. Considering Vancouver Pride “is both protest and party, critical and celebratory,” all while taking place on B.C.’s beautiful West Coast, organizers were tasked with figuring out how to capture that feeling and turn it into “a visual identity.” So, they turned to Carter Hales Design Lab for help creating a new app, website and brand identity. While the society’s anticipated brand launch and open house were yet another casualty of COVID-19 cancellations, those interested can check out the changes online, with the full website and app set to launch on June 1. “VPS has gone through a metamorphosis over the past five years,” said Arnot. “We changed how we serve and advocate for our community and we wanted a fresh, new look that reflected our journey.” Anyone with a Canadian mailing address can head to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to enter for a chance to win one of nine bags of limited-edition swag. What is a wet market, and did you know you've probably shopped at one?

I

t's early in the morning, and vendors have trucked in with their goods and are raising their tents, opening their folding tables, and loading up their displays.

National Heritage Board publication on wet markets.

In a short while, the aisles will be packed with shoppers, eager to get a taste of something different or to simply purchase ingredients for a favourite recipe or meal.

So what's in a name? Singapore is where the term "wet market" is thought to have originated. The term came into popular usage in the early 1970s in Singapore when the government used it to distinguish from the newer, indoor, and air-conditioned "supermarkets."

Fresh-caught fish glisten on mounds of ice, coolers are packed with free-range eggs, and farmers stack colourful fruits and vegetables in enticing arrangements.

In 2016, the OED added "wet market" as a Singapore English word, denoting that the term is used widely around Southeast Asia.

This is a special place that tells the story of a region through food. It's where families and communities gather to shop, connect, work.

But since the start of 2020, "wet market" has become a term tied to COVID-19. That's because "a wet market in Wuhan, China, called the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, is believed to be the source of COVID-19," explains National Geographic.

In Vancouver, and across Canada and the U.S., as well as in much of Europe, we call this the farmers' market, and they are a part of our cultural and economic fabric. Some versions, housed under coverings, operate semi-indoors, on a year-round basis; take Granville Island's world-famous Public Market in Vancouver or Seattle's Pike Place Market for that matter - where it's not uncommon to stand in puddles of melted ice as you watch vendors chuck whole salmon at customers who want in on the tradition of fish throwing for a photo opp. That puddle of ice you're standing in, and the mounds of it that keep the fish fresh, is in part where the term "wet market" comes from. Across the world, the wet market is a way of life. "They are called 'wet' to differentiate them from markets selling “dry” packaged goods such as noodles. It may also refer to stallholders’ tendency to hose down their produce to keep it cool, and the melting ice used to keep seafood fresh. Many incorporate food halls, as in a western mall," explains the World Economic Forum. In Singapore, for example, "wet markets offer a wide range of fresh meats and vegetables at affordable and often 'bargainable' prices. Shopping is a community experience - visitors know they can receive friendly and personalized services from stallholders they patronize regularly – often over many years," explains a 2013

Scientists believe the virus that causes COVID-19 came from bats, but first passed through an intermediary animal. The animal and the human may have interacted at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, because, in addition to being a "wet market" by definition, it also serves as a "live animal market" or "wildlife market." These animals are often kept in unsanitary conditions and are sometimes slaughtered on site. "Viruses spread easily if animals are kept in cramped, dirty conditions like market cages, and can easily spread to handlers or customers through bodily fluids," explains the World Economic Forum. "Although most wet markets don’t sell live wild animals, the terms 'wet market' and 'wildlife market' are often conflated, according to Aron White, a China specialist at the Environmental Investigation Agency, a London-based nonprofit," adds National Geographic. While there can be an overlap in the Venn diagram of wet markets and live animal markets, a wet market is not, by sole definition, where live animals are slaughtered on-site for consumers. Conflating the terms means there have been campaigns across the globe to shut down "wet markets." "It is because of the public health crises wet markets cause, as well as the intense suffering inflicted on farmed animals, that Animal

Last week, Canadian musician Bryan Adams joined many people around the world who have turned the term "wet market" into a pejorative. Lamenting the cancellation of his shows, the passionate vegan who regularly urges fans to embrace the same lifestyle said on social media: "Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of a tenancy of gigs at the @royalalberthall, but thanks to some f***ing bat eating, wet market animal selling, virus making greedy bastards, the whole world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands that have suffered or died from this virus." Odds are, Adams himself has shopped for veggies at the U.S., Canadian, or European equivalent of a "wet market." However, he too is conflating that term with "wildlife" or "live animal market." While we may be tempted to point our fingers at the continent of Asia when it comes to live animal markets, they exist in North America, too, in particular New York City, where about 80 of such markets operate legally. There is currently a state bill proposed to shut them down, launched in the wake of the city's COVID-19 crisis. On January 26, China banned the trade and consumption of wild animals for food. The World Health Organization has also published "recommendations to reduce risk of transmission of emerging pathogens from animals to humans in live animal markets or animal product markets." Those recommendations include safety and hygiene measures aimed at protecting visitors and employees from contracting illnesses. Regardless of whether there will be further action in North America or elsewhere in the world to stop live animal or wildlife markets, the wet market itself will continue to be a way of life, source of income, and source of food for many, including here in British Columbia. BREWERY UNVEILS ‘7 O’CLOCK

Fess up: Who among us has strolled outside for the nightly “7 o’clock cheer” across Metro Vancouver with a beer in hand? If there was even a shred of guilt or self-consciousness while doing so, this new brew launched by a local brewer can put you at ease. Burnaby’s Steamworks Brewing Company has just released its 7 O’Clock Cheer Pale Ale. The beer was created in partnership with the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, and was "inspired by the unwavering show of support for frontline workers every evening at 7 p.m." Not only was the 7 O’Clock Cheer Pale Ale brewed

using local ingredients and materials donated by Gambrinus Malting, Hops Connect, and Westkey Graphics, but 100 per cent of net proceeds from the sale of the beer will "be donated to support health care teams and researchers in their efforts to treat and cure COVID-19," according to Steamworks. “We are thrilled to partner with Steamworks Brewing on their 7 O’clock Cheer Pale Ale,” says Angela Chapman, President & CEO, VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation. “Our health care workers are facing an unprecedented situation. While we’re tasked with staying home, they are staying at work for all of us, and our community's show of support, including the 7 p.m. nightly cheer for our health care workers, has been inspiring for us all to keep moving forward in this fight. This collaboration highlights our heightened appreciation of community. Proceeds from

this beer will support our COVID-19 Funds, providing supplies and support to our healthcare workers and funding research. I think we can all raise a glass to our healthcare workers and to the fight to beat COVID-19.” Steamworks says they've been able to keep brewing in Burnaby by adhering to social distancing guidelines and following rules set out by the B.C. government for workplace safety during the COVID-19 crisis. The 7 O’clock Cheer Pale Ale from Steamworks will be available for purchase at participating liquor retail stores. By Lindsay William-Ross

Is it COVID-19 or just allergies?

Tuesday, May 26th, 6:30-8:00pm

The Public Health Agency of Canada lists cough, fever and difficulty breathing among the most common symptoms of the coronavirus. Symptoms can also include sore throat, tiredness, headache, chills, aches and pains, and decreased sense of smell, among others. Meanwhile, people experiencing common seasonal allergies can have similar symptoms.

“Because allergies and COVID-19 can present in similar ways, it’s a good idea to have the facts and be extra cautious to make sure what you’re experiencing is nothing more than allergies,” said Greg Shepherd, CEO, Pharmasave Pacific. According to Pharmasave, here are some key differentiating factors between seasonal allergies and COVID-19: Fever: A fever, and associated symptoms such as chills, are not usually typical of seasonal allergies, so may point to an infection. Itchiness: If your eyes, nose or throat are feeling itchy, especially after you’ve been outside, chances are you’re experiencing seasonal allergies. Nasal: congestion common among seasonal allergy sufferers, nasal congestion is not a typical symptom of COVID-19, even among those who report decreased sense of smell. Sneezing: Another common seasonal allergy symptom, sneezing is generally not associated with the coronavirus. “Because every case is different, it’s important to speak to a healthcare professional if you’re unsure about your diagnosis, and your pharmacist is a good place to start,” Shepherd said, adding that pharmacists can also offer advice and treatment to curb seasonal allergies. Pharmasave has also launched a one-stop COVID-19 information portal pharmasave.com, where the public can find all the information they need about COVID-19, including links to COVID-19 selfassessment tools that can help you assess if you’re experiencing symptoms of coronavirus or potentially seasonal allergies. By Chris Campbell

VANCOUVER SUN ARCHIVES

COVID-19 is complicating the arrival of seasonal allergies, says a locally-based pharmacy company, as some allergy symptoms overlap with symptoms of COVID-19.

Vancouver WAS Awesome Russell The Goat was a mountain goat who escaped from the Stanley Park Zoo in 1966 and spent much of the next two years living rogue in the bluffs near Siwash Rock, just out of reach of park staff. This was actually Russell's second whiff of freedom; when he was being delivered to the zoo as a juvenile, he jumped out of the car window, but was captured after a dramatic chase down Broadway. In 1967, Russell took up a new pastime of jumping from car roof to car roof in one of the parking lots. The following year he met his demise on Park Road, where he was hit by a car.
