EDITOR'S NOTES

Extraordinary Powers for Lifelong Learning Books have been an important part of my life for as long as I have been able to read. Matilda Wormwood was my hero when I was 9 years old. I still have my old tattered copy of Roald Dahl’s beloved book about a mistreated child who summons extraordinary powers to oppose her abusive parents and maniacal school headmistress. Later in my teens, I was disturbed by the misfortunes and misadventures of the boys on the desert island in “Lord of the Flies,” by William Golding and fascinated by the Jewish culture and moral dilemma of the title character in “My Name is Asher Lev,” by Chaim Potok. The possibilities and wonders in life seem endless when we read of such tragedies and triumphs, real or fictional. Libraries have provided access to these possibilities and wonders for hundreds of years, possibly dating as far back as the first century A.D., before Gutenberg’s printing press. Here in Clark County,

Your fertility and pregnancy process should be free from interference or stress. Unfortunately, in our society today we experience high exposure to environmental conditions that prevent this natural process by causing toxic human nervous systems and autoimmune disorders. Chiropractic care is a safe, eeective practice during fertility trtreatments and pregnancy. Not only can routine chiropractic care strengthen your immune system, but it also helps increase nerve flow to reproductive organs in males and females. During pregnancy, it has been reported that 50% of women experienced back pain and 50-75% experienced it during labor*, often as a result of pelvic shifts. Chiropractic care can reduce this pain, encourage loose ligaments and joints, and maintain healthy pelvic balance, so your baby has enough room to freely move into the correct delivery position which can in turn prevent breech presentation. General George C. Marshall Leadership Awards Recipients

The Historic Trust, in partnership with the City of Vancouver, recognized the work and achievements of 13 rising Clark County leaders on April 27, 2021 at the annual General George C. Marshall Leadership Awards virtual ceremony presented by Riverview Community Bank. “We are proud to honor General George C. Marshall who is known for coordinating the U.S. response to World War II, and for promoting economic recovery for the European allied countries following the war. His legacy continues to serve as an example to young

leaders. We are pleased to announce that the Young Professional Award went to Jasmine Tolbert and the High School Senior Award went to Pu-kai Tseng,” says Stacey Graham, interim president/CEO of The Historic Trust. At the age of 26, Jasmine Tolbert has already made her mark on our community. Jasmine works in the human resources department for Vancouver Clinic while also serving as president of NAACP Vancouver and in a board position at the YWCA Clark County. "METAMORPHOSIS": Young Dancers Thriving Despite COVID Tiegan Reeder (age 12) as Little Red Riding Hood in "Metamorphosis". Photo by Julie G. Photography.

Checking local entertainment calendars for performances these days is akin to the sound of one hand clapping. However, thanks to a determined group of young dancers, Vancouver’s Riverside Performing Arts (RPA)’s scrupulous COVID protocols and Northwest Performing Arts Alliance (NWPAA) support, the show does go on! On May 29, 2021 RPA released “Metamorphosis”—a unique, elevenact, 45-minute performance art film with an emphasis on dance.

maintaining social distance,” she added. “It provided the perfect fairy-tale setting for characters like Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White.” Bobby P Media provided video production. RPA’s Youth Dance Company (YDC) dancers range in age from 12 to 18 years old, joined in one act by RPA’s Little Dance Company (TLC), with dancers as young as 6 years old. RPA’s YDC performers actively mentor their TLC colleagues as part of their program, an inclusive and nurturing approach unlike any other arts school in the area. “I’m so glad I have a big sister in YDC,” shares 7-year-old TLC dancer Scottie Dunham. “Scarlet makes me so happy and she makes me so excited to be in YDC when I’m old enough. I’m so grateful for her.”

“Metamorphosis” explores the emotions we all have been experiencing through a variety of dance and music styles—from classical ballet to jazz and even a bit of hiphop. The family-oriented performance features imaginary escapes with fantastical fairytale characters as well as more thoughtful explorations and also some unexpected twists—but we don’t want to ruin the surprise. Five choreographers—Josh Murry-Hawkins, Brina Gabryel, Sarah Baltazar, Autumn Andersen and Annie Warf—are on the bill, each bringing a different flavor to the company. “We all have felt the need to look inward over the last year to see how we can continue to learn, grow and thrive,” said NWPAA president Scott Craig. “’Metamorphosis’ showcases the transformation each dancer has taken as they navigate dancing in an ever-changing world of social norms.” Dedicated COVID-19 site supervisor Katherine Warf ensured safety through the same thorough strictly-followed COVID-19 guidelines adopted for their 2020 Nutcracker production. “RPA’s guidelines included pre-screening, social distancing and masks at all times when off stage, dancing in masks while inside, and stringent cleaning and sanitization protocols. During filming we shot one dance at a time. We limited the set to a small technical crew of two, the director and the dancers in that piece,” said Warf. “The outdoor filming at Empress Estates allowed the dancers to perform without masks as allowed by the CDC, while

Additionally, five dancers choreographed, directed, and filmed their own 90-second pieces. Fifteen-year-old YDC dancer Grace Bartley embraced the challenge, relishing the opportunity to create a whole piece that reflected her as a person—not just a dancer. “As an artist, I liked the creative freedom to control the emotions that I portrayed to the audience, Bartley said. “I could make sure I got across what I wanted to in the piece that I created.” “Metamorphosis” made its on-demand streaming debut Saturday, May 29, and is available for streaming to multiple devices sharing an IP address for only $20 at northwestpaa.org/performances. After July 1, purchasers can download the performance until July 10. Instead of paying at least $80 for a family of four to see a single performance, fans of the arts can enjoy watching “Metamorphosis” multiple times over pavlova or popcorn in the comfort of their own home, while taking an active community role in supporting local talent. All proceeds—100% of ticket sales—support NWPAA sponsorships, outreach, and future performances. Nonprofits may request access to the production for free at northwestpaa.org/community.

continued from previous page for WSU-V is something I hold close to my heart. I truly started my activism on campus and being invited back to my alma mater in this way was a huge honor,” says Jasmine. Pu-kai Tseng immigrated with his family from Taiwan when he was in 3rd grade. He worked hard in school, first to learn English, and then to progress to achieving a 4.6 GPA in his senior year. Through Pu-kai’s volunteer involvement with OMSI’s Teen Science Alliance Program, he learned that not all students have the same opportunities to explore STEM fields. He responded to that need by founding the Send2Space nonprofit organization where he serves as president. The mission of Send2Space is “to create a world where all youth, regardless of their backgrounds, are connected to opportunities that create a new generation of STEM leaders.” This fall, Pu-kai will enter an accelerated seven-year MD program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. “I also enlisted into the Air Force Reserve to serve this country while pursuing higher education, hoping to truly make a difference in this world as General Marshall did,” says Pu-kai, who shipped out for basic training on April 30.

Pu-kai Tseng founded Send2Space, joined the Air Force Reserve, and plans to attend medical school in Arizona.

MOSAIC FAMILY VOYAGE

me Adventures i t g n i r Sp

By Rachel Messerschmidt All photos courtesy of the author.

As live-aboard cruisers in the Pacific Northwest, I tend to think in terms of the “cruising season” and the “off season.” The off season is the cold, rainy period each year from November to April. It is the time to grin and bear it and simply get through, so that we can enjoy the cruising season in all its glory once again. Unlike most boaters in the PNW, we do not keep a home slip yearround. Instead, we have worked to build our life to fit this lifestyle. My husband and I both work remote jobs, we home-school our kids, and we have no car. We keep nothing that can tie us to a particular place. Our boat is our home and that allows us the freedom to travel from place to place as often as we like, while affording us the luxury of bringing our home with us everywhere we go. During the cruising season, when the weather is nice and the outdoors welcoming, we spend our time exploring together as a family. So far this year, we’ve traveled from Olympia all the way north to the San Juan Islands. We’ve seen orca whales more than

on the Water once, and even had the privilege of enjoying their company for over an hour one day. We’ve explored state parks and visited some of our favorite quiet waterfront towns. Just yesterday, as we walked a couple miles along a waterfront trail, we got to watch a family of four river otters enjoy a snack as they drifted with the current. Soon we will again visit the crown jewel of the San Juan Islands: Sucia Island Marine State Park. Accessible only by boat, Sucia boasts over 800 acres of forest, coves, beaches and trails of entirely protected state park lands. It is home to Fossil Beach where you can walk the water’s edge and find hundreds of fossils from ancient times when the ground you stand upon was once the bottom of a sea. It’s also said to be the only place in Washington where an 80-million-year-old fossil bone of a T-Rex has been recovered. At the next bay over, you’ll also find the infamous China Caves where rum runners and migrant slave traders of the early 1900s would stash their illegal goods inside the pockmarked sandstone continued on next page

caves when pursued by the authorities. The cellular signal holds out and there’s enough room to find a spot for your boat, even on the busiest of weekends. Primitive camp sites are available on the island and many people make use. The island’s largely untouched nature is a huge draw in the warm summer months. We’ll spend another several weeks exploring the many amazing places that we love in the San Juans before crossing the Strait of Juan de Fuca once more to get back to Port Townsend. There, we’ll lift our sailboat out of the water for a couple of weeks’ worth of projects as final preparation for our biggest adventure yet, heading south down the west coast this August to take our family to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez.

Rachel Messerschmidt and her family are Clark County natives currently living and cruising full time aboard their sailboat, Mosaic. In the Pacific Northwest currently, they are preparing to leave for Mexico in August of this year. Rachel blogs about her life and journey at www.mosaicvoyage.com and shares her family’s adventures in a monthly column in Vancouver Family Magazine.

Discovering Little Free Libraries Just in Time for Summer Reading By Brooke Strickland

A

nyone who has been immersed in a good book knows the special magic of a story. In neighborhoods all around Clark County, Little Free Libraries are sparking imaginations and bringing enchantment to readers young and old, right in their own neighborhoods.

Simple Beginnings

In 2009, Todd Bol, a Wisconsin resident, built a model of a one-room schoolhouse and filled it with books. He fastened it to the top of a post and placed it in his front yard. People loved it so much that he started making more to give out to friends. After some discussion with one particular friend, they decided to set a goal of having 2,508 Little Free Libraries in four years. That initial goal was exceeded in just a year and a half, and in 2012, Little Free Library officially became a registered nonprofit organization. Today, there are a more than 100,000 registered “little” libraries in more than 100 countries.

Little Free Libraries around Town

If you are in the mood to go explore with your kids, check out the library map at www.littlefreelibrary.org. Simply type in your zip code and see how many registered libraries pop up in your area. Then, grab a few books of your own that you are willing to share, hit the road and see what kind of books you can find. Chances are, you will discover a handful of other libraries that aren’t registered with the organization, too. Downtown Vancouver (especially the Hough neighborhood) is home to several different mini libraries that are regularly stocked. Next to Simply Sweets on Washington Street, there is a large red

and white mini library full of all sorts of genres. A couple minutes away on the corner of 23rd and Harney Street, another library always has kids’ books, fiction and non-fiction books on hand. Heading up toward Hazel Dell, one registered library sits at Lakeshore Athletic Club, and another one can be found on the campus of the Boys and Girls Club of Southwest Washington, next to Hazel Dell Elementary School. In Camas, you can find one on the perimeter of Crown Park. continued on page 14

Encouraging Literacy

With summer in sight, keeping kids reading during their time off school is important. It not only keeps their brains learning, it keeps their imaginations alive. In addition to seeking out some new treasures at Little Libraries around town, think about enrolling your kids in summer reading programs. Barnes and Noble’s summer reading program began in May and continues through the summer. “Barnes & Noble is a champion of children’s literacy and booksellers across the country pride themselves on connecting readers to the perfect book with the goal of fostering a life-long love of reading,” says Jackie De Leo, vice president, bookstore, Barnes & Noble. “The Barnes & Noble Summer Reading program, a cornerstone of the company’s focus during the summer months, encourages readers in grades 1-6 to read eight books to receive one book at the end of the summer, and is now in its

14

25th year.” Kids can pick up their summer reading journal in-store or print it on the store website. Once it is completed, return it to your local store. The free book that they earn can be redeemed in July and August. Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries will also be doing their annual “Summer at Your Library” program. The program runs from June 15 to August 15 and will be for children and adults. Kelsey Hudson, student and youth partnership coordinator at the library shares, “As with our last couple of years, we’re challenging library patrons to Read, Learn, Create and Explore throughout their summer. All children (under 18) who complete the challenge will get a library tote bag and their choice of prize (book, journal, early learning toy and more) at the end of the summer. Finishers of all ages will be entered to the grand prize drawings as well. Sixteen winners, one winner from each branch, as well as one winner from each age bracket will win a shopping spree (gift card) to a local store.” The library will also be hosting a variety of performances and virtual programs this year, as well as a weekly video challenge. All information, including game boards and calendars are available inside libraries and at fvrl.org.

Vancouver Family Magazine • www.vancouverfamilymagazine.com • June 2021

Literary Leftovers Used Bookstore in Battle Ground will also be providing reading incentives this year, with on-site events happening starting at the end of June. Kelsey Simons, owner of the store, shares that from June 25 to August 20, the store will host game nights with prizes and refreshments every other Friday from 4-6 pm for teens and tweens ages 11 and up. Kids 10 and under can enjoy story time and crafts every Tuesday at 3 pm from June 29 to August 17. In addition, the shop will give prizes out for kids under age 18 who read eight books between June and August. For more information, check out their website at literaryleftoversbg.com. Wherever your adventures take you this summer, be sure to make time for reading. There are all kinds of libraries, both big and little, waiting to be discovered.

Calm:

Self-Care for

Dads By Kelly Garrett, MA, LMHC

hen we think of self-care the image that usually comes to mind is a trip to a day spa. The problem is this type of selfcare is not relatable for most dads. In fact, viewing self-care as the occasional indulgence that makes us happy for a day is not effective self-care for anyone. We need to think of caring for ourselves as a set of habits and routines that provide regular rest and promote health. Why do dads need self-care? One of the most common reasons men come to me for counseling is to deal with the stress of work, parenting and relationships. Most men have a strong desire to do well in all of these areas, but feel they are failing. The feelings of failure create stress, the stress makes it harder to make changes, leading to feelings of failure and the cycle repeats. By creating regular healthy habits, dads (and moms) can create the opposite of stress, which is calm. Creating calm allows us to be more present and focused in meeting the demands of life, helping break the cycle of stress and failure.

Sleep, diet, and exercise are habits we all feel we could improve, but change can feel overwhelming. When talking to people about changing these habits I recommend focusing on one area and making small changes over time. You have your whole life to change a habit. Take it slow and do it right so the changes will last. When it comes to sleep, we need 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep to function well. Just because you’re able to get out of bed and grind through the day with less doesn’t mean you’re getting enough. The small change I tell people to make is to try and get one more hour of sleep per night than you get now. I remember

the long days (and nights) of caring for newborns, completing graduate school, and starting a business which kept me far from the eight hours a night I needed. The strategy of reclaiming my sleep one hour at a time was a simple way to progress toward healthier sleep. I was amazed at what a difference just one more hour a night made and it motivated me to keep aiming for eight hours a night. If you do a web search for “sleep hygiene” you will get long lists of things to help you improve your sleep habits such as having a regular bedtime and limiting caffeine and screen time. The book “Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams” (Scribner, 2018) by Matthew Walker also details all the benefits and effects of good sleep. The food we eat is the fuel our body uses to perform all the tasks we need to perform in a day. Since dads have a lot to do, we need good fuel in our bodies. Making diet changes can be difficult. Similar to the goal of getting one hour of sleep more per night, I recommend making one minor continued on page 18

change per month rather than trying to completely overhaul your diet. Focus on adding in good things rather than prohibiting the bad. For example, eating one more vegetable per day than you’re used to or adding one healthy snack. There are a lot of opinions about which foods are healthy so consulting a licensed dietitian or nutritionist is always a helpful step. Regular exercise is an important part of keeping our bodies healthy. Again, you don’t need to sign up for an intense workout program or pay for an expensive gym membership. Just start small. Try to find a short period of time in your day when you can do small things like go for a walk or do some push-ups. The easiest option if you have little ones who live with you is to be active with your kids. Rest is probably the most overlooked part of self-care. When you have younger children the “work day” is from whenever your kids wake up to whenever they go to bed. Even if you go to an office or they go to school for part of that time, if they’re awake there’s something to do. Since most kids

are awake 12-16 hours a day, that’s how long a dad’s work day really is. You can’t survive a day that long without a break. By taking a break and sitting still or getting our mind off of our to-do list, we are able to calm our bodies down and create more of a threshold for stress. There’s a difference between rest and distraction. Resting is not getting on our phone to catch up on news or zoning out to YouTube videos. Rest happens when we give our attention to something that brings us more calm rather more daily tasks or a stimulating distraction. Here’s what rest can look like:

Take your lunch break.

Whether it’s scheduled or flexible, you need that 3060 minute break during the day to get your mind away from work and reduce your anxiety. Instead of using this time to check email or run errands, try sitting still and eating, taking a walk or reading a book. The belief that our value lies in our job performance pushes many men to work non-stop, fueled by their anxiety, only to come home and be zombies. I’ve had many clients who worked this way. When they make the simple change of taking a lunch break they report a

decrease in stress and more energy to be present with their families when they come home. Interestingly, the break also usually improves productivity at work. Scheduling rest time when you’re home with your kids is a way of creating the same effect as a lunch break, and is just as important. When my kids stopped napping, we continued to keep that nap time in the schedule as quiet time. They were expected to play in their rooms quietly for an hour. This time is regulating for my kids and gives me the break I need in my 13 hour work day. It’s hard to resist tackling my to-do list while my kids are occupied, but if I don’t carve out at least 20 minutes to read a book or just lie down, then I lack the clarity and energy to manage the afternoon chaos at home.

Calling a timeout

is another important habit for creating rest. If you find yourself in the middle of a stressful project at work or a challenging moment with your children, learning to take 10-20 minutes to sit down, close your eyes and relax your body will help you to refocus. Because stress is felt in our bodies, it keeps our brains from being able to think clearly. By calming our bodies down our brains are better able to think through the problem we face. Finding time for relationships is another important part of taking care of ourselves. Talking through the anxieties we face with our partner or a close friend is one of the best ways for us to understand them and know we’re not alone. Too many of the men in my counseling office have no one to talk to but me, and that’s not enough. We all benefit from having people to talk to who can provide some empathy and perspective. Hobbies are usually one of the first things we think of when we think of self-care and continued on page 20

they are a good way of connecting with parts of ourselves other than “worker” or “parent.” However, hobbies should never be just another thing on our to-do list. If a hobby feels like something you should do and not something you want to do then you’re better off taking a nap. It’s always good if your hobby coincides with another good habit like exercise or time with friends. Our emotions are physically felt in our bodies and the more stress we accumulate in our bodies the more easily we can be overwhelmed by our emotions. By getting adequate sleep, putting good fuel in our body and exercising on a regular basis we become more resilient when those inevitable stressors happen. Too often our habits for coping with stress take some form of escape, but in the busy life of dads there is no escape. By having better habits for creating calm we feel less need to escape our life and are able to be more present with our work, our families and ourselves.
