This stunning original design by Haida artist Jay Simeon features “Kuniisii” a supernatural being who gave the Haida people songs and music, along with other mythical creatures prevalent in Haida history that was passed down from generation to generation through songs and oral narratives. This one-of-a-kind Steinway model D was hand painted in acrylic made from ground argillite, a stone found exclusively in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia. The work was commissioned by Tom Lee Music Canada.

To the Haida people, music and mythology are intrinsically connected. The history was handed down from generation to generation, through songs and oral narratives of epic journeys. In designing the artwork of the Steinway piano, it was Jay’s intention to capture the importance of it in the Haida culture.

Wilson school of Design graD, Taylor Byrom, has caughT WorlDWiDe aTTenTion WiTh her kiDs cloThing line Taylor Byrom grew up in a house where people sewed. So when she decided to turn fashion design into a career, it wasn’t surprising. Byrom graduated from Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) Wilson School of Design in 2013 with a bachelor of design in fashion and technology.

Initially planning to launch her career as a wedding dress designer Byrom drastically changed focus after her experiences volunteering with sick kids. Seeing firsthand the need for better, more functional clothing options for kids with complex medical needs, Byrom created and launched jolie hart, a line of girls’ apparel created for just that. The pieces in her clothing line have been designed to accommodate various tubing and medical equipment, as well as wheelchair restrictions. Now, as a KPU alumna, Byrom is continuing to grow her business (she’s recently begun working on a clothing collection for young boys with medical needs called victory hart) which is a true mix of design theory, application, and industry connection.
