Paramount opened on Arbutus Street in Vancouver in 1972. It moved to its current location in Richmond in 1978, starting as a small 6,000 square foot store. In response to increasing customer demand, it expanded over the years to become the beautiful and very large 50,000 square foot showroom that it is today.

Describe your store’s vibe Paramount is a very friendly place to shop and to work. It is a second generation family owned business with over thirty employees.

Because of our large sales volume we are able to negotiate special discounts with our suppliers to ensure that our prices are always competitive. How does your refund policy differ from other showrooms?

We accept all in-stock merchandise, including both regular and sale-priced items for a full refund up to 14 days from purchase date with no restocking charge. We ask that merchandise be returned in the same condition that it left the store.

Special order items are a final sale and are non-refundable.

Q&A Can you tell us about the Althrop Living History furniture collections?

Althrop Living History is a collection started by the 9th Earl Charles Spencer, younger brother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. This collection is a reproduction and adaptation of 17th, 18th, and 19th century antique furniture from the ancestral home of Spencer’s family - Althrop. Out of several thousands pieces of fine furniture from the Althrop house, a collection of 300 pieces including gilded carved mirrors, serpentine sideboards, tweedy wing chairs, leather topped desks, and more, were reproduced by high-end furniture manufacturer Theodore Alexander. What inspired you to open it?

In 1974 Iris McKellar first opened her little English shop in a Richmond Shopping Center, then moved the store to another Richmond location, and then to south Granville where it was located for twenty years.

During that time the store was sold to the current owners, Norene and Zbig Ciura who moved the store to its current location.

What do people say about your business?

People love our store - the displays, the selection as well as our professional service. Our general manager Peter Barnett has been with McKellars for more than 30 years, providing the continuity our customers appreciate.

How has your business evolved?

We keep up with what our customers want while offering timeless furnishings.

What’s the secret to your success?

Beautiful furniture and professional, personalized service is certainly our main focus. One trend we are experiencing in the market is downsizing. Many of our customers from South Granville in particular are coming back to the strength of McKellars’ brands. Their children, many now married, having been raised in homes with quality furnishings, now shop with us for the similar products and service.

TJY Home imports lifestyle furnishings from around the world. While 30,000 square feet of space might sound big enough for a furniture gallery, it just isn’t large enough for TJY Home in Richmond.

“We’re expanding and once the renovation is finished, we will have more than 50,000 square feet,” says TJY’s store manager Christine Gong. Opened four years ago, TJY carries a vast array of furnishings that spans the design gamut from traditional to contemporary. Gong says the concept of a furniture gallery, a space in which each manufacturer is displayed in its own vignette, comes from TJY’s owner and founder, Jack Teng, who brought his expertise in retail from his native China, where he owns a mall.

TJY imports more than half of the latest designs from Europe, the U.S. and Canada, “We stock some ornate traditional French-style and Italian-style furnishings that no one else has” says Gong.

The company has tapped into the burgeoning community of Chinese immigrants in Vancouver. But, says Gong, “after three years in business, we wanted to fit into this market. So we’ve been bringing in products for the West Coast market. What we discovered is that new Chinese immigrants, after a few years in Canada, want the West Coast look.” “We’re creating lifestyle here,” says Gong.

How do you position your showroom through your products?

In addition to importing the latest designs from Europe, the U.S. and Canada, about half of TJY’s offerings come from China, produced by such companies as A-Zenith and Davon. We stock some ornate traditional French-style and Italian-style furnishings that no one else has, that are made in mainland China.

Which brands do you carry?

Among the lines the company stocks are the sleek edgy designs of such European manufacturers as Limitless, Sovetitalia, Stone International, Compar, Arros Group and Chateau d’Ax. Classic-traditional furnishings are represented by such U.S.-based manufacturers as American Drew, Kincaid Furniture Co. and Fairfield. Products by the Quebec-based Dinec are also on offer.

What are some of the unique features about TJY? The concept of a furniture gallery, a space in which each manufacturer is displayed in its own vignette, comes from TJY’s owner and founder, Jack Teng, who designed the space to feel like home.

When did your business open and how has it evolved over time?

We opened our doors in June 2004 as a Casino but with a vision to build an exclusive entertainment destination with a wide range of amenities that deliver amazing experiences. Year after year we have continued to grow and add to our guest’s experience. We began to add dining options and in 2005 we added The Resort with 222 luxury suites, a 995 seat state of the art Show Theatre, pool, fitness room and spa and marina. As the property further established itself as an entertainment hot spot, the need for more hotel space was met in 2009 with a newly built 193 room hotel. Simply called The Hotel, this extension of the resort offers travellers a unique blend of serene ambiance and exquisite hospitality.
