More than 460 people in B.C. recover from COVID-19

We are buried in bad news these days. The COVID-19 wave continues to roll over the city and province, washing out much of what we have come to appreciate and take for granted in a functioning society. Your existence on Earth being number one. Number two would be earning a living to buy food and pay rent or a mortgage. Human contact is also high on the list. All of this threatening reality has unfortunately but necessarily fed news coverage, as have stories about exhausted health care workers, shuttered businesses and a freefalling economy. So much news, so much of it dire. The escalation in the number of people who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus has become a bit of a macabre scoreboardwatching exercise. Which is horrible to say considering these are people we’re talking about,

many of them elderly and defenceless against a deadly virus that lives in at least 13 B.C. care homes, including several in Vancouver. As of the Courier’s Tuesday print deadline, 19 people in B.C. had died of the virus. Understanding the trajectory we’re on, and tracking the velocity of the virus, is obviously important information to gather so we know the level of calamity ahead. But there is some good news to report. As we heard Monday from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, 469 of the 970 people who contracted COVID-19 since the outbreak in January have recovered. Henry pointed out the recovery rate represents 48 per cent of total cases, and noted more than 70 people who were in hospital — some in intensive care — were among those who successfully combatted the virus. “That’s really a testament to the importance of being in hospital at the right time, being ventilated at the right

time — if they need it — and recovering from this,” Henry said at a news conference. “That’s an incredibly important thing for us to remember. My hands go up to all of the care teams in our hospitals who are looking after these people.” Henry didn’t mention him by name, but among those who did recover was a 99-year-old West Vancouver man living at the Hollyburn House retirement home. ence that recent moves by government such as cancelling elective surgeries have freed up 4,233 hospital beds in B.C. “With 4,000-plus empty beds, we’re not moving anyone there soon,” the minister said. Whether there will be good news in the days and weeks ahead is up to every British Columbian, said Henry, who used part of her time at the microphone to b again rally citizens. It’s a critical time, she said, and the next few weeks of adhering to physical distancing and other measures will determine whether hospitals see “a trickle” of new cases or “dramatic increases.” “We are not through the storm yet,” she said. “We have not yet reached our peak. We have more people every day who are in hospital, and in our intensive care units. So we need to do all we can across government, across our health system and in our community. a smiling Reuben Huva giving a thumbs-up is awesome, particularly when so many grandparents across the country have succumbed to the virus. Where the good news doesn’t get as good is in the mounting number of people hospitalized, which is now at 106, with 60 people in intensive care. The rest of the people with the virus are in isolation at home, which is important to note, especially when we see the images of over-run hospitals in New

York City and Italy. Like everyone else covering and following the news, it’s been astonishing to hear what we’ve heard this month from Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix about how our city and province has changed, and is preparing for change. We heard Dix say Monday at the same news conference that the Vancouver Convention Centre is being set up as a 271-bed “off-site treatment centre.” Never in my lifetime would I have thought I’d write that sentence. But then I wasn’t expecting to write about states of emergency, the widespread closure of businesses or having pharmacies deliver prescription medications to drug users. Yet here we are. Dix clarified the centre would only be used if it was required, noting “lower acuity or less ill” patients at hospitals would be moved there to free up space for COVID-19 patients in hospitals. But he said a couple of times during the news confer-

Of all the words certified freelance sign language interpreter Ava Hawkins thought she’d have to address while assisting Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart at a March 22 press conference, “beer pong” came as a surprise. The City of Vancouver hired Hawkins to interpret COVID-19-related press conferences in American Sign Language (ASL) for the deaf community. Last week, she was tasked with interpreting the mayor as he called out residents who weren’t taking necessary precautions to stem the spread of coronavirus, including a group photographed over the weekend playing beer pong. Stewart also introduced his plans for enforcement measures. Fortunately, Hawkins, who can hear, was able to peek at the mayor’s notes beforehand, precisely so she could familiarize herself with the gist of his message, which makes her job easier. While aware of the beer pong party game, she never knew its name so she had to ask. “Beer pong is two words, but in sign language, it actually comes up to be eight signs… so I have to add all these signs to have the same concept mean the same thing,” she said. Signs have also been developed to interpret the words “coronavirus” and “social distancing,” so they don’t have to be finger-spelled. Such is the life of a sign language interpreter in these times of COVID-19. Hawkins is just one among many interpreters whose public profile has increased in recent days, as all levels of government are relying

on them to translate critical information to the deaf community. Health Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, are being assisted by sign language teams, including Nigel Howard, who is deaf, and ASL English interpreters. Federally, the government uses two sign language interpreters — one for ASL and one for Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ), the predominant sign language for deaf communities in Francophone Canada, particularly Quebec. Hawkins, and her colleagues, generally wear black or solid colours so their hand movements can be seen easily. She said it’s crucial for minority communities to get “really clear” information during the pandemic. “Having the interpreters be able to convey [the information] — it helps. It helps calm society and especially for our deaf community because for many people sign language might be their first language... especially with some of the medical terms that we’re using, and some of the business terms we’re using,” she said. “They may not be as understandable to them but seeing it in sign language, they’re like, ‘Oh, OK, I get

it. I know what’s going on.’” Even Fire Chief Darrell Reid, who stepped back from that role in March to lead — the COVID-19 emergency task force, called attention to Hawkins’ contribution when he spoke at Stewart’s March 22 press conference. “I just want to mention a special person who is up here with me on the stage because communications is just as important as every other part of this response,” he said about Hawkins. Hawkins is also getting supportive messages from the deaf community. “Deaf community members are sending me zillions of emails saying, ‘Oh my God, Ava, it’s clear.’ That’s all I want to know. Do you understand it? Well, good. If you’re understanding it, and you’re following the [health] rules, that’s great,” she said. “[The reaction] is extraordinarily positive. They’ve been very, very positive. They’re just feeling included. They’re like, ‘Wow, this is fantastic.’ The first day that I went and did the news, I must have got about 300 emails saying, ‘Oh, my God, thank God Ava, you’re there. Somebody is giving us news.’ It’s long overdue. The city, the province, they should all be providing sign language.”

provides essential service Hawkins grew up in the deaf community, so she’s a CODA — Child of Deaf Adults. Her dad’s side is all deaf, her mom became deaf at about age two, and she has siblings who are deaf. She is certified as an interpreter, which is the highest calibre in the profession. There are only 15 certified interpreters in B.C. While there haven’t been complete census reports on it, she estimates there are more than 5,000 people who are deaf in the Lower Mainland. “This isn’t about me as an interpreter being on screen — this is about the deaf community understanding the severity of what’s going on,” she added. But Hawkins hopes the increased profile of sign language interpreters will prompt more people to consider learning the language or to become interpreters.

No laughing matter

When governments started using sign language interpreters to spread information about coronavirus, concerns emerged, however. Some media would zoom into the officials and inadvertently cut ASL interpreters out of their shots. f “There were about eight or nine agencies that wrote letters that said, ‘You need to stop cutting the interpreter off because we can’t understand what’s going on.’ Now,

you’re seeing we’re both on the screen,” Hawkins said. Another concern is that someone posted dozens of screenshots online taken of Howard performing various signs, with English words underneath that don’t match the signs, such as “air quotes,” “hard no” and “wut,” “simmer down” and “I’m shook.” Whoever did it may have meant no harm — they mention they’re a fan, wrote that the site is meant to be funny, they don’t mean to offend anyone, and ask individuals to support the deaf community — but it hasn’t gone over well in the deaf community. Some feel it’s insulting. “The service we’re providing is access and communication and it’s not about mocking this visual language,” Hawkins said.

Communication is key

Hawkins’ contract with the city is through an organization called Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility. “What’s important and what’s cool is that the city is actually working with a centre of communication excellence that deals with deaf community members, and so they know what the needs are. So, if there are things that we need, the communication is right there — they’ve got the expertise,” she said. The World Federation of the Deaf also put out guide-

lines for broadcast interpreting on March 24, pointing out that more than 70 million deaf people throughout the world have the right to access information in their national sign languages on the coronavirus pandemic. The key points the organization included are: • In all situations, it is critical that professional sign language interpreters or translators with nationallevel qualifications are hired. • Information should be available through all media channels and on all platforms. If the sign language version is only available through some channels (i.e. narrowcast), or only through web-based platforms, there is a risk that deaf people will miss out on crucial updates at critical times. • An interpreter should be physically present and visible on camera alongside whomever is speaking in making new announcements. This will ensure deaf people can access information through a variety of media outlets as other members of the public do.

I called my survivalist dad for some fatherly pandemic advice Michael Kissinger

There have been a few times in my life that I’ve sought my dad’s advice and reassurance when faced with a crisis. When I was 12, I broke my nose playing 500 Up at night against his wishes, and he ordered me to “bleed out” on the front stairs so I wouldn’t wreck the carpet. When I turned 40 several years ago, I asked him how he dealt with such a milestone. “Turning 40 was no biggie,” he told me at the time. “It was 41 when my life really fell apart.” He didn’t elaborate. So, it was with a mix of morbid curiosity and trepidation that I decided to interview my dad last week and pick his brain about the current state of the world and ask if he had experienced anything remotely like this in his 75 years on Earth. To paint a fuller picture, I should mention that as an aspiring survivalist my dad is really living his best life during the current pandemic. His house is stocked to the rafters with canned and smoked salmon he killed, jams and jellies from berries he picked, dried and frozen mushrooms he foraged, and eggs galore from his “girls” in the backyard chicken coop. I also don’t think he’s purchased any new

clothing this millennium. Born in Victoria in 1945, my dad remembers the polio scares of the early to mid1950s. In elementary school, he and his classmates would go on “penny drives” to raise money to purchase iron lungs for those afflicted. “The major effect upon me as a child was that we couldn’t go swimming when we wanted,” he told me. “There’d be a big scare going around Victoria and it was associated with, god only knows why, going swimming at the lake.” Rather than feeling worried, he says he was “pissed off” that these polio scares had deprived him and his brothers of swimming during the summer. “When the polio vaccine came out, I remember thinking, thank god, now we can go swimming whenever we want. That was my immediate perception — self-gratification.” He says his mother was particularly prone to worry — understandably so. He remembers her stories of growing up in a small Ukrainian community in rural Saskatchewan during the Spanish flu epidemic. “She said it seemed to be indiscriminate,” my dad said. “In one family, it took both parents and left the children. And, in another family, it took all the children and left the parents.
