What a long, strange, emotional few weeks we’ve had

What a long, strange, emotional few weeks we’ve had, Vancouver. That is understatement of the century number one. Here’s number two: These are extraordinary times for all of us who have never faced such uncertainty about what’s ahead in a city and province that has been spared for decades from widespread destruction, economic collapse and death. I’m referring largely to natural disasters, not colonization or the opioid crisis, which continues to wipe out thousands of people across the country each year. Two to three people in B.C. will die today of an overdose. As of the Courier’s press deadline Tuesday morning, 13 people have died in the province since

the coronavirus outbreak reached us in January. So there’s some context. But think about it, have we lived through any catastrophic hurricanes in the past 50 years? Major earthquakes that have killed hundreds? Cityflattening tsunamis? We’ve been a fortunate bunch, and now many of us are tucked in our comfortable homes, watching Netflix and making sure the dog gets a walk in the sun-filled park. But here’s the strange. When wildfires are raging across the province, we see the flames, we see the smoke. When there’s a tremor, we feel the ground shake. When hooligans rampage through the city over a hockey team losing a game, we see the destruction. COVID-19 is an invisible threat. We know that more than 470 British Columbians have the virus, we

know that a seniors’ home on the North Shore is losing residents at a rapid pace, with nine gone in the last month. But we don’t see their faces, we don’t see the funerals. Not yet.

The images from China and Italy should already be enough for us to heed the advice of the incomparable Dr. Bonnie Henry, our province’s calm and reasoned health ofﬁcer, to wash our hands, keep our distance and stay home.

Yes, I got emotional when she choked up at a news conference earlier this month. Am I allowed to say that as a hardened scribe? I got emotional too when Trudeau announced last week that it was time for Canadians to come home, which is odd because the guy has never penetrated my emotional wall. But here’s why: One of my daughters and my mother-in-law ﬁnally got on a plane back from France last Friday, leaving behind relatives in lockdown and a surreal Paris. They travelled there in February when the virus was not much of a story in a country of nonchalance. They planned to visit relatives and were to return the ﬁrst week of April. Thankfully, my motherin-law got to see her only living sibling before the rest of the trip was

scrapped. Sadly, they couldn’t embrace when they said goodbye, maybe for the last time. They were that frightened the virus would take them down. This is not a good time for the elderly, which is understatement of the century number three, as those of us with parents who were born in the 1930s can attest. My mother, for example, is watching a lot of Turner classic movies, in between solitary walks through her Burnaby co-op complex. One of her neighbours was to drop off a pandemic kit at her doorstep, with a mask and wipes. His name is Shoki, originally from Bangladesh. He looks out for my mom, as do others in the complex who have recently arrived from various parts of the world. The generosity is appreciated by our family, who can’t always get out to see her. My mom’s brother died in February and a mass was to be held in his name at her local church last week. She couldn’t go, of course, and I don’t know that the service ever happened. Let’s talk about the Italians singing to each other from their balconies and the French shouting into the evening in appreciation of their health care workers. I don’t know if defence lawyer Lisa Jean Helps knows Thane. But she must have had a week like many of us had, and wanted some good news. So she took to Twitter

and typed this: “I just cried a bit because today @windsorplywood donated their entire supply of 200 N95 masks to Lions Gate Hospital. Those masks will keep two best friends (nurses) and their colleagues and families safe. Thank you @ windsorplywood I’m a new client of yours for life.” So there’s a lot of nice going on out there, people, and that means something in these uncertain times. And as Dr. Henry reminded us all as she stood in front of reporters again last week, this is our time to be kind, to be calm and to be safe. And to cry a little. @Howellings

The COVID-19 pandemic is the single-greatest threat to the health and wellbeing of you and those you love. And it is at times of crisis that each of us must summon the courage to say and do what is needed. In spite of clear, sensible and evidence-based advice from our Provincial Health Ofﬁcer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, and Minister of Health, Adrian Dix, there are still too many among us who recklessly ignore the warnings to avoid close physical contact with others and therefore put all of us at risk for illness — and some of us for death. It takes every individual in a village to care for the whole village. You are not just an individual; you are part of a greater whole — part of a family and a community of friends, a member of your neighbourhood and a citizen of this town and province; part of our nation and all of humanity. With this health care and

economic crisis, we have seen how we each are so vulnerable and dependent on what happens around the globe and in our communities. Your wellbeing and the wellbeing of all others are dependent on what we each do. Let us all do what needs to be done. Please follow these simple instructions:

1. Stay at home

Remain in your home as much as possible, leaving only if you have to work or to buy groceries. When you do go shopping, make a list (so you only need to go once a week) and send only one family member. You don’t need to wear a face mask but follow #2 and #3. Don’t bring any germs home. Practise good hygiene at home. Wash what you bring into your home. Don’t share drinks. Use serving utensils with shared dishes. Wash your hands before preparing food and eating. Reframe the circumstances that most of us share. You get to stay at home with your loved ones. You now have

2. Keep your distance

Social distancing is a social responsibility. It will protect you and your loved ones. It will save lives of those you know and many you do not. Think of your elderly neighbour or vulnerable family members. I prefer the term physical

distancing and this means keeping your distance from other people to reduce exposure to airborne infective droplets. That distance is six feet or two metres — roughly the length between your ﬁngertips with both arms stretched to the sides or the width of a car. Don’t gather in groups, meet a friend for coffee, have parties indoors or outdoors or play sports such as basketball, tennis, volleyball or dancing. You can safely go for a walk or cycle (if you are not self-isolating in the 14

days post international travel or after potential exposure to COVID-19), but keep that six-foot distance from others. You can still socially connect by phone, social media and video. Some of us have to go to work each day because we’re part of the frontline. My physician colleagues are still attending patients every day but we are only seeing patients in person when absolutely necessary. The majority of care family physicians have been providing over the past two weeks has been virtual — by phone or video conferencing.

Live alone? Tips on how to manage during COVID-19 pandemic Naoibh O’Connor

For those with roommates, partners or children, the reality of social distancing, self-isolation or being quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic may be eased by virtue of having at least some personal contact at home. But for those who live alone, the next weeks and months may be tougher to handle. Just ask Christine Hagemoen who lives on her own in an apartment in Mount Pleasant. Hagemoen also works from home. “I’m used to being on my own generally — and like it — but this is really different. Choosing to be alone is one thing, but being forced to is another all together. It is at these times I wish I had a pet,” she told the Courier. Hagemoen, however, has a few tips for those in similar circumstances. She said don’t be afraid to talk to yourself out loud and if you can get outside, do it, especially in the sunny weather, while nature is blooming. (Since these interviews, the municipal and provincial governments, have further emphasized the need for people to stay home, not to socialize in person with others, and to always maintain a safe distance from others when outside — that is, only exercise outside with people in your household and maintaining at least a two-metre space from all others. But regulations have been tightening daily so keep your eye on the news for the latest ofﬁcial directions aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus) Hagemoen added that she had a great evening Facebook chat with a friend in New Brunswick last week. “Reach out via Skype, DM, email or with people you’ve lost touch with and with the people you normally see,” she suggested. Street, works from home as an accountant. Given much of her day is spent online, she’s not keen to sit behind a computer after work. She describes herself as a “very social” person who thrives on being with people. She says it’s too soon to tell how tough social distancing will be. Earlier this month, her daughter was visiting so she went to restaurants and last week she went to the grocery store. “I think the challenge for me is going to be not being able to go to the gym and not being able to go to yoga but those places aren’t social anyway,” she said. “... I guess I’ll just be out walking around by the beach or walk to Queen Elizabeth Park.” Smithies added she was worried about older people who live on their own like one of her neighbours. His kids call every day but don’t live nearby. He used to swim every day but can’t now that pools are closed due to coronavirus. “So what’s he going to do?” she said. Like Smithies, Lesli Boldt lives alone and considers herself a people person. “As an extrovert and a naturally social person, isolation and separation from other people over the past few days has been really hard for me,” she said in a March 19 email to the Courier. “As a consultant, I used

to work full time from home but put an end to that over 10 years ago because I didn’t want to be by myself all the time; I’ve rented office space ever since 2010. However, my downtown co-working office is now closed, and so am working/ worrying from home.” Here are Boldt’s tips, in her own words, for getting through the pandemic: • Call friends and family regularly. I’m a Gen Xer, and we remember the days before cellphones and texting, before there was an Internet. But like most people, I’ve been more of an email/text person the last 10 to 15 years or so, and can easily go months without actually speaking to someone. These days, I’m on the phone with friends more than I have been in years, to check in, find out how they’re doing and have a few laughs. A friend of mine and I have a FaceTime drink date at 8 [March 19]! • Get out of the house for exercise at least once a day. Going for a run, going for a bike ride, like I did [a week ago], on the Arbutus Greenway and to Olympic Village, or a long walk helps me to work off some of the anxiety and nervous tension. Even if I’m not socializing with people, I can still say, ‘Hi,’ and feel like I’m part of a community. The past couple of days, I’ve used my solo runs/rides to scout out nearby neigh-

bourhoods and see which businesses are open/still serving during these crazy times. I’ve also just decided I don’t give a shit and sing along to iTunes at the top of my lungs when I’m out. Singing’s good too. • Keep busy. I’m scheduling activities each day in my calendar — do an online yoga class, clean the balcony, re-pot the plants, all of which I did today, cook meals from scratch, do laundry, so that I’m not just sitting on Twitter all day wondering how long this is all going to last. This is easier said than done. At a daily press conference March 19, even Dr. Bonnie Henry, the province’s chief health ofﬁcer, stressed the importance of social connection between people, as long as a safe distance is maintained. Getting outside is crucial for both physical and mental health, she said, adding that people can also get involved in innovative activities to maintain ties to others such as holding virtual coffee dates, going to take-out windows or dropping food or medications off to people who can’t get out. “These are things that are really important to help us stay connected,” she said. “In particular, we want to make sure that we’re not socially isolating our seniors who are most vulnerable to having serious illness… I’m calling on all of us to do what we can in our communities to stay connected.” Henry also encouraged residents to go for walks and bike rides, while staying away from others, and to take advantage of online offerings such as courses, exercise classes, online museum tours or e-books. Online support groups have also popped up on Facebook such as COVID-19 Coming Together (Vancouver). “We don’t have to be physically together to stay connected,” Henry said. @naoibh
