One candidate who was recommended was not a new name to Vanchurch. Billy Mckenzie was familiar because he was recommended by Mike Sellers and Andrew Martin to the Generations Minister Search Committee in 2014 for that position. Although not selected to fill that role, Billy interviewed very well and that team recommended him for a future role with children and families.

Last fall DeAnn Perrigo stepped down from her roll of overseeing the children’s ministries at Vanchurch after years of graciously volunteering. As a result, the Elders decided to begin a search for a Family Minister to join our staff. The Elders see the role of Family Minister to be vital to the growth of our families and this church. A search committee was formed and recommendations were received.
his wife Brenda at Cascade, and they were married in 2002. Brenda’s family is in the Eugene area; and Billy’s is in Bakersfield, CA, where he has been serving as Family and Children’s Minister at the Central Church of Christ since May of 2007. Billy and Brenda have three children: Jacob (11), Jayda (8), and Kira (1). Billy’s current role at the Central Church is very similar to our envisioned role here at Vanchurch. His current ministry context is mixed between low-income, single-parent “unchurched” and affluent, older “overchurched”. Over the past 10 years Billy has also served as a board member and project director for Freedom School—a summer reading, learning, and leadership program. Additionally, Billy has served as a mentor for special education students.
