As College Officer for Vanbrugh I am responsible for managing the College and the College Team as well as supporting events and activities that enhance the experiences and development of all our college members. I am also responsible for the wellbeing of our members - resident or non-resident, from any year - so if you have any problems please do drop by to see me. As a Vanbrugh Alumnus and having worked as College Administrator for Vanbrugh for the past eight years, I am fully aware of some of the problems and issues you might face, and if I am unable to help, I can probably direct you to someone who can This is going to be a great year for the Vanbrugh community. We have a lot of activities planned – from our infamous first year supper parties to study skills get-togethers, from music workshops to ping-pong parties and so much more. If you would like to run an event or get involved, get in touch. We want you to make the most of your time at York so that when you graduate you can look back, knowing that what you have learned and the rewarding experiences you have had will help you to make a success of any venture you undertake in the future.
I, like the freshers arriving in September, am new to Vanbrugh, but I have spent many years at York starting as a temporary junior technician in the Chemistry teaching labs in the early days of the University. In the intervening period I graduated, taught in the Chemistry Department where for a number of years I headed up the teaching programmes, acted as Provost of Langwith College and served on a number of University committees, notably Teaching, Student Welfare, Estates, Sports Activities and HYMS. Currently, I run a couple of projects for the European Space Agency aimed at improving monitoring of the upper atmosphere. For reasons that are not altogether clear it was assumed that I had responsibility for the wildfowl on the lake. So you can blame me if the geese wake you early in the morning. In my younger days I played rugby, squash and croquet for the University but I’m afraid am too long in the tooth now to turn out for the Vanbrugh teams.
