Barry Thomas College Principal
As College Officer for Vanbrugh I am responsible for managing the College and the College Team as well as supporting events and activities that enhance the experiences and development of all our college members. I am also responsible for the wellbeing of our members - resident or non-resident, from any year - so if you have any problems please do drop by to see me. As a Vanbrugh Alumnus and having worked as College Administrator for Vanbrugh for the past eight years, I am fully aware of some of the problems and issues you might face, and if I am unable to help, I can probably direct you to someone who can This is going to be a great year for the Vanbrugh community. We have a lot of activities planned – from our infamous first year supper parties to study skills get-togethers, from music workshops to ping-pong parties and so much more. If you would like to run an event or get involved, get in touch. We want you to make the most of your time at York so that when you graduate you can look back, knowing that what you have learned and the rewarding experiences you have had will help you to make a success of any venture you undertake in the future.
I, like the freshers arriving in September, am new to Vanbrugh, but I have spent many years at York starting as a temporary junior technician in the Chemistry teaching labs in the early days of the University. In the intervening period I graduated, taught in the Chemistry Department where for a number of years I headed up the teaching programmes, acted as Provost of Langwith College and served on a number of University committees, notably Teaching, Student Welfare, Estates, Sports Activities and HYMS. Currently, I run a couple of projects for the European Space Agency aimed at improving monitoring of the upper atmosphere. For reasons that are not altogether clear it was assumed that I had responsibility for the wildfowl on the lake. So you can blame me if the geese wake you early in the morning. In my younger days I played rugby, squash and croquet for the University but I’m afraid am too long in the tooth now to turn out for the Vanbrugh teams.

Hello Vanbrites! Firstly, congratulations on ending up in Vanbrugh. I hope this will be the beginning of some of the best years of your life. I am the current chair of the Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC). As a Vanbrugh student, you are instantly a member of the Junior Common Room, and the JCRC is a group of about 40 students who volunteer their time to make the college experience the best it can be (more info about the JCRC on page 8) Most of the Freshers’ Week activities are organised by the JCRC. This first week is about meeting new people, making friends and settling in and I hope we’ve been able to make that happen. My one piece of advice for Uni life is to get involved –doesn’t matter what with. It is unlikely that you will ever again be surrounded by so many new opportunities and experiences ever again. Make the most of it while you can. Oh, and study hard. I’ll see you around! x

community it is today. The purpose of the collegiate system here at York is to provide a circle of friends and acquaintances distinct from academic departments. Also, it is through the college you will receive much of your welfare support, should you need it – this takes the form of the college officer, Georgina Heath, and the college welfare tutors who live on campus. If you do have any personal problems, please contact the college officer or administrator.
Vanbrugh College
Vanbrugh College
Vanbrugh College was opened in 1967 and is named after the architect and playwright, Sir John Vanbrugh. Contrary to popular belief, this is not because Le Page Court, when the light catches the concrete just right, resembles his baroque masterpiece, Castle Howard. Since 1967, Vanbrugh has grown and changed into the vibrant

Groceries The Costcutter in market square is convenient, but relatively expensive. We recommend Morrisons which is 10mins away on the no 844 bus. The Aldi in Fulford is good value.
Information
Post You will find in your welcome pack which address to use for post. DB/BS students recieve post in their blocks while all other students must collect it cetrally. All packages must be collected from the porter’s office.
There is Wifi across cam- pus, but the system can be a bit dodgy. You will also receive an ethernet on arrival which might provide a more reliable internet connection in your room. Vanbrugh has its own computer room an printer in the nucleus. There is more PC acess in the James room (Near Eric Milner-White Court) and the Library.
Computers
The Library is open 24/7 for student use. The main building, the JB Morrell Library, is mainly a silent zone and contains the texts. The adjacent HArry Fairfurst building is a ‘studious buzz zone’ where talking and group study is permitted.
The Library
Bus & Taxis Bus No 44 is free between Hes East and Hes West. No 44 and 4 will take you to the trainstation. For taxis, we suggest you use Streamline (01904 656565).
Maintenance Please report any issue with you accommodation imediately to the porters and request reciept of your complaint. An online system for this will soon be coming into place.
Map
If you want to watch live TV in you rooms, you must purchase a TV licence. You can, however, watch streamed TV (eg. IPlayer) for free. Also, there is a TV in the JCR.

What is the JCRC? The Junior Common Room Committee is an organisation of about 40 students who all volunteer their time to making Vanbrugh college the best it can be. All colleges (excluding Wentworth) have a JCRC. The members are mostly elected by the rest of the college at the end of the Autumn term.
The JCRC can achieve whatever its members want to. We cover the Freshers’ Week, events throughout the term, welfare support, college sport and a range of merchandise. The JCRC meets every Thursday during term time at 6.30pm to discuss issues with the college and any upcoming events. All members are welcome to attend these meetings (although they can be somewhat lengthy). Once a term we hold an open meeting where we invite the JCR members (ie all Vanbugh undergrad students) to interrogate the JCRC on
Open Meeting Thursday W3 (17/10/13) - JCR
Towards the end of the Autumn term, there are elections for the positions on the JCRC. For most positions, you nominate yourself during week 7. For positions with more than one opening, it is possible to enter as a team. Following this, a week of campaigning begins where you must try to convince members your fellow Vanbrites to vote for you. During the campaigning period, a Hustings is held, where nominees answer questions and complete (vaugely related) tasks to prove that they are the best person for the job. Then voting begins. All voting is done online on through the YUSU website. Results will be announce the the end of week 9. Some positions are not elected - Publicity Officer, Webmaster and PR Officer. For these roles, an application form can be found at vanbrugh-college.co.uk and must be submitted in week 7. Positions will be chosen by the new committee. Best of luck!

their activities and to vote on any changes to the way the JCRC works to help and represent the college. If you are interested, please turn up, as we require a minimum of approx. 70 students to officially pass any motions. We also provide free pizza for all attendees (‘pizza makes the democracy go down’) and it is a great chance to make your voice heard!

A message about how colleges work with ...
and the future of democratic decision making at uni
In week 4, you’ll have the chance to change the way YUSU runs completely, putting colleges right at the centre of every Union decision and action. It means a real commitment from the YUSU Officers (whom you’ll hopefully meet throughout the week) to get to know what students want and trust them to lead YUSU. We’re really excited about these changes, which will give us as a college a lot more influence over the agenda and a lot more power to act on the feedback you give, so we hope you’ll vote FOR them in week 4.
Welfare
10
Vanbrugh Welfare
Vanbrugh college provides Welfare provisions in a number of ways. In charge of welfare is the college officer, Georgina Heath, who coordinates the welfare tutors. The welfare tutors live on campus and provide direct help and support because they are trained to deal with a number of issues, so don’t ever feel
hesitant to ask them for help. In addition to the tutors, the welfare representatives are students on the JCRC who get elected every year and provide information on the services on campus and host various welfare events. The JCRC welfare team put on a number of events including weekly drop in sessions (where you can talk freely about welfare issues), Vanbrugh Loves You and Exam De-stress events.
Services Other services include the Student support office, Open door team, Nightline, and the YUSU ASC office. These services provide support for a variety of problems and more information on each of the services and what they can provide you can be found at www.york.ac.uk/students/ support There are also student based networks that provide more specialized services such as the LGBTQ network.
Housing It might seem ridiculously early to start thinking about where you’re going to live next year, but your first year will fly by so quickly! Most important thing is DON’T PANIC. There is more than enough student housing in York, so don’t feel pressured into a hasty and potentially dodgy tenancy agreement. The YUSU housing list comes out in February which features student properties that meet YUSU set
standards. Get your agreement checked over for FREE by the university! They will be able to spot any potential problems with the property or the landlord. Better safe than sorry! If you decide that you love living in halls, there is a option to stay on campus next year. Vanbrugh College and YUSU run several ‘Find a Housemate’ events later in the year. If you are unsure about who you are going to live with next year, keep a look out for these great events.
It can be easy to let your finances run amock while a student. Try to set a weekly budget and stick to it! If you go over one week, try and make up for it the next Buy the college freshers week wristband: it is designed to help you save money in freshers! Also bear in mind extra cost e.g. drinks, taxi fares Only buy what you need: for example, buy a small loaf or freeze half if a whole loaf is too much.
Try your hand at something new – Uni is the perfect place for it! People will try to tell you, “don’t try hard in first year - it doesn’t count”. Do relax, but don’t apologise for your academic work.
Freshers’ Tips
Free sexual health supplies are available at in the YUSU office and at Nightline If you use bluetac on your walls, it may leave a mark and you will be charged to repaint it – best avoid.
Just because everyone is acting like Freshers’ Week is ‘the time of their lives’, doesn’t mean they’re not homesick too. The college tutors are there for you to talk to if you have a problem – use them!

One Day Tournmaments
Throughout the year, each college competes to win points for their sport and the overall college sports cup. It’s been a while since we had that cup on our shelf, but this year we are hopeful. On top of the regular college leagues and tables, there are three One Day Tournaments each term in which
each college battles furiously against the barriers of inexperience to come away champions. Autumn Term Tournaments Frisbee - week 1 Dodgeball - week 3 Indoor rowing - week 6 Wheelchair basketball week 9
