, We are so excited to welcome you back to Senákw/Vanier Park for Bard’s 33rd Season. After two long years of being dark on our stages, we are thrilled to once again gather as a community under the tents. And we couldn’t be prouder to offer you these three new productions.

We began our Festival in 1990 with A Midsummer Night’s Dream and we have revisited this beloved comedy seven times, each time offering something new and surprising to our audiences. We had hoped to bring you this Dream in 2020 but the pandemic forced us to pause. However, we have continued to develop this production since then and we believe it is stronger, more thrilling and even more magical now! Full of fairies, goblins, lovers and magic, this Dream is exactly what we need coming out of such a challenging time for us all. Board of Directors Harlem Duet by the incomparable Djanet Sears is a heartbreaking President and thought-provoking Canadian classic. Influenced by Othello, and John McCulloch examining the Black experience over a series of moving “duets”, Vice President Harlem Duet is a play that we can’t wait to share with our audiences. Darlene S. Howard We will end our season with another beloved Shakespeare play, Treasurer Romeo and Juliet. While many of you will already know this beautiful Kostya Polyakov and tragic love story, this new production will be told through Juliet’s Secretary eyes, reframing her beliefs and experiences through the lens of a Shona McGlashan strong, passionate young woman. Directors We hope that our 2022 Season brings great joy, laughter, love, Andrew Bianchini a deeper understanding of our fellow humans, and a renewed Rebecca Catley optimism about the power of theatre. Our entire team – our artists, administrators, production, wardrobe, site build staff, Board members and volunteers – have poured their hearts and hard work into bringing our Festival back to you. Thank you to them all for sharing their talent and dedication. Thank you to our extraordinarily generous community of supporters that ensured we were able to return on such stable footing. Finally, thanks to you, our loyal and passionate patrons. Your faith and encouragement over these past two challenging years have buoyed us, and your continued support has ensured that we are able to once again be together, in this beautiful location, under our iconic tents, to share the magic that is live theatre. Welcome back – we are so happy you are here!

th e s t o r y The story begins in Athens where we meet Theseus, a great military commander, a few days before he is to marry Hippolyta, a queen from a distant land. A prominent citizen named Egeus arrives, asking for Theseus’ support in dealing with his daughter, Hermia. Egeus wants her to marry a young man named Demetrius but Hermia has refused, because she’s in love with someone else – Lysander. Her father is determined to get his way and he draws on an ancient law that gives Hermia three stark choices: marry Demetrius, become a nun, or die!

That wood is also the home of Oberon and Titania, rulers of the fairy realm, and their followers. They usually live in harmony with the natural world but that harmony is now broken because Oberon and Titania are fighting over custody of a child. Oberon wants Titania costume sketch to get revenge on by Christine Reimer Titania, so he asks the fairy Puck to get him a magical flower with juices that make a sleeping person fall madly in love with the first creature they see when they wake up. He uses it on Titania so she will fall in love with one of the beasts in the forest. He also asks Puck to use it to help one of the young Athenian lovers. But Puck makes a critical mistake…

In desperation, Hermia and Lysander decide to run away – but first they share the secret plan with Hermia’s friend Helena. Helena is deeply in love with Demetrius and she tells their secret to him. Demetrius follows the fleeing couple, Helena follows Demetrius, and soon, all four are in the wood outside of town. In another part of Athens, a group of tradespeople are preparing a play in honour of Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding. Peter Quince has written it and he wants the title roles to be played by two co-workers, Bottom and Flute, with smaller parts for Snout, Starveling, and Snug. Bottom wants to play all the juicy roles, but eventually she settles for just the lead. The group decides to rehearse in the wood outside of town, to keep the performance a surprise for the wedding celebrations.

The scene is now set for these three groups’ stories to play out and connect. There will be misunderstandings and confusion, battling egos, love gone wrong – and finally made right. Come along and enjoy the journey! 11

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM d ire c t o r ' s n o t es It’s been a full two years since this production, originally planned for 2020, was cancelled a few days before rehearsals were due to begin. After such a long time away, welcome back to this theatre in the Park. Welcome to our Dream.

This play holds a special significance here at Bard on the Beach. This is the play that started the company back in 1990, and it’s a show that the company has returned to at special times, including the 10th and 25th anniversary seasons. I have had the pleasure of performing in five separate productions, all at Bard, since 1990.

be played by senior students from their Dance program. We will also have talking trees, creepy goblins, a few rewrites, and other surprises to bring to this story – one of young people in search of hearts’ desire; of political figures seeking a path forward; of supernatural powers out of balance, and perhaps, most importantly, a group of actors trying to stage a play under trying circumstances. I’m writing this in April, six weeks before the start of rehearsals, before the artists have come together to build the experience you are about to see – before we really know what our Dream will be. In a way, this note is attempting to tell the future.

One of the most beautiful qualities this play holds is its malleability. Shakespeare created a mix of dramatic styles and took his inspiration from several different literary sources, so there are a multitude of ways to present it to an audience. It also contains magic, which is always an invitation for the audience to suspend its disbelief more deeply and bring their own imaginations to bear.

The future is, of course, unknowable, until it arrives. And then it’s gone. Just like theatre. I hope you enjoy our Dream.

Scott Bellis, Director

About Scott Bellis I’ve worked in theatre for 35 years now, and I still love it. Born on these lands, raised my kids here. Was a founding member of Bard in 1990. Worked on over 170 productions in many theatres across Canada. Made many friends. 5 Jessie Awards, many nominations. 4 years as Council President of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association (and counting). Love my community. Theatre is magic. Theatre is you. Thank you for being here.

We have employed the 1920s as a general palette, with additions. I was drawn to this era as a reference for its historical similarities to our own current climate: military unrest, civil strife, a global pandemic – a world in trouble; one that reflects our time. It’s a struggling and unsettled place in deep need of renewal, one in which a journey into the dark woods may provide some answers, and a pathway toward a brighter future together. We are excited to be collaborating with the SFU School for the Contemporary Arts for this production. Several fairies will 13

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM behind the scenes Our productions rely on the talents of a highly skilled design team to bring the stage to life. From the lighting, to sound, to set, to costume design, the creative process starts long before we see the productions. Learn more about what went into creating the set, sound and costumes for A Midsummer Night’s Dream!

After such a long time away, my goal above all has been to fill the tent with drama and magic to match the story being told onstage.”

Mishelle Cuttler, Sound Designer & Composer “A Midsummer Night’s Dream has the best variety of characters to design costumes for. The lovers’ looks are rooted in a historical reality, whereas the fairy world is fantasy, and the mechanicals are comedy. I start my design process by looking at lots of visual inspiration. This production of Dream is set around 1930, so I pick and choose what will work for our production, thinking about period silhouettes, societal positions, defining era colours, patterns and textures. When designing the fairy world for this production of Dream, I needed to be especially considerate of how the fairies could move in their costumes as dancers!"

Set design for A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Amir Ofek

“The set design for A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a time capsule of a pre-COVID-19 design I created for Dream and Henry V for the 2020 Season. When the decision was made to bring back the lost 2020 Season, with Dream now set in a pre-WWII era, I decided to keep the design the same, except for some minor changes and additions to enhance the dream-like experience.

Christine Reimer, Costume Designer

I feel it’s a poignant decision to share with you all of what was and what could have been. This set design bares the COVID scars we all carry with us.” Amir Ofek, Set Designer “Most of the inspiration for the music in this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream has come from the incredible work Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg has done to choreograph the movement in this show. This play always offers the possibilities of a rich and varied sonic palette, and this production is particularly exciting because of the scope and scale of the dance and movement.

Harlem duet the s t or y

Costume design by Cory Sincennes

Harlem Duet is the story of the complex relationship of a Black couple, played out against the backdrop of three different periods in the American Black experience: 1860, before the US Emancipation Proclamation; 1928, during New York’s Harlem Renaissance; and again in Harlem, in post-civil rights 1997. Each setting reframes the story of the woman, her deep love for her partner, and her sacrifices, pain, revenge and resilience when she is betrayed by him. Each era’s cultural and social backdrop plays a unique part in how each couple’s story develops – and ends. And, as in Shakespeare’s Othello, a strawberry-embroidered handkerchief plays a significant part in each story.

Costume sketch for He by Rachel Forbes

in-law Amah (married to Billie’s brother), and her estranged father, Canada, who turns up unexpectedly. Billie is in deep pain over Othello’s choice and all of its repercussions – and she makes a plan to make him pay. Set design for Harlem Duet by Rachel Forbes

The other time periods are seen as a series of flashbacks throughout the unfolding of the 1997 events. Sometimes the action shifts to Harlem in 1928, where “He” is a classically trained actor, playing in blackface in a minstrel show. Again, “He” is involved with a white woman – a director named Mona – and “She” responds out of her pain and despair. And there are scenes set in the American South from 1860 to 1862, where the couple – now “Her” and “Him” – are slaves. They have set up a plan to escape from the plantation, go north and find freedom in Canada. But at the last moment, “Him” decides he can’t leave his white mistress. And once again, the consequences of that choice are devastating.

First, a note about names. In 1997, the lead characters are Billie and her husband Othello. In 1928, the two characters are called “She” and “He”. And in 1860, on a plantation, they are “Her” and “Him”. The majority of the action occurs in 1997, where Billie and Othello, married for nine years, are living in an apartment in Harlem. Billie is a graduate student and Othello is a professor who has recently achieved tenure over a white man named Chris Yago. Othello has fallen in love with a colleague, a white woman named Mona, and is in the process of leaving Billie for her. Also part of the 1997 story are Billie’s friends: her landlady, Magi, her sister19

harlem duet Dire c t o r ’ s No te s As a young Black theatre student, eagerly searching for plays that spoke to my cultural identity, Djanet Sears was one of the first Black Canadian playwrights I discovered. At that moment, I fell in love with her writing and her gorgeous storytelling about people who looked like me – and consequently I devoured everything “Djanet Sears” that I could get my hands on! To see yourself in plays and in the characters on stage is essential for all theatregoers, and I am so proud to bring this story and these complicated, full Black characters to life on the Bard stage, in this very special 25th anniversary of Harlem Duet!

me, telling stories about me, my family, my friends, my community. For most people of European descent, this is a privilege they take for granted.”

Djanet so perfectly described her play as “a rhapsodic blues tragedy, exploring the effects of race and sex on the lives of people of African descent. It is a tale of love. A tale of Othello and his first wife, Billie. Set in 1860, 1928 and contemporary Harlem at the corner of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Boulevards.”

Please join me in celebrating this iconic play – and all the talented theatre artists gathered to bring the best of themselves to this work in such a deep and brave way. Cherissa Richards, Director | April 2022

This story is timeless. It is a story about love and betrayal and more specifically it is a story centred on Blackness. Stories about Blackness, Black love, Black hurt, Black triumphs, Black lives, have been historically overlooked and underproduced in our Canadian theatrical landscape. And while this play is centred in Blackness, it is also universal. By opening up our scope to other cultures, other storytelling – we learn about ourselves and connect as humans though our differences.

ABOUT CHERISSA RICHARDS This is Cherissa’s second season at Bard on the Beach (Timon of Athens dir. Meg Roe, 2018, Assistant Director). She has done directing apprentice programs at Bard on the Beach, the Shaw Festival and the Stratford Festival. Directing credits: The Power of Harriet T (Manitoba Theatre for Young People); The Game (Sarasvàti); VOICE (Prairie Theatre Exchange); Meet Me At Dawn (Theatre By The River); and The Last days of Judas Iscariot (Canadian College of Performing Arts). Directing Residency: National Theatre School of Canada, 2021. Directing Fellowship: This Gen-Why Not Theatre, 2021. RBC Rising Star Emerging Director Prize: Crow's Theatre, 2021.

In this story we see Billie fighting to find a way to end the cycle of generational trauma by invoking traditional black magic. We join Billie on her journey through the pain of Othello’s betrayal and subsequent devolution of her mental health. In Djanet Sears’ forward to this play she writes,

“I have a dream. A dream that one day in the city where I live, at any given time of the year, I will be able to find at least one play that is filled with people who look like 21

harlem duet behin d t he sce n es Bard engages a team of highly-skilled designers each season to bring our productions to life onstage. Their creation process for lighting, sound, sets and costume design is complex and fascinating! Here’s a look at what went into creating the music, set and costumes for Harlem Duet. “The inspiration for the show’s composition came mainly from the script. I read through it, listening for any music that would emerge from the pages. Thankfully, melodies leapt from the script, and I quickly caught and composed them. I was also inspired by the music of African American composer Florence Price, whose sound fit the mood of some of the dialogue. The goal is to compose and arrange music that enhances the story, while being careful not to distract from the dialogue and acting.” John Littlejohn, Composer & Musical Director

Costume sketch for Her by Rachel Forbes

The set really needs to be a playground that lets us follow Billie's journey and seamlessly transitions to these other stories of love and loss. This means the costumes have to lead us through the timelines and give us a strong sense of story and character. I spent a lot of time researching the Harlem Renaissance — it's such a visually rich time in history that there was a lot to feed the physical world of Harlem Duet. There's incredible photography of the time, particularly the works of James Van Der Zee. I found inspiration in African American artists of the time such as Romare Bearden, Aaron Douglas, Josephine Baker and Alice Neel. And, contemporary artists Bisa Butler, Kehinde Wiley and Kara Walker.

Set design for Harlem Duet by Rachel Forbes

"Djanet's words give us a story that is at once heartbreaking, joyful, tragic and poetic. I find that inspiring and it's a joy to make a world that grounds the play in the present and allows for the magic of experiencing other times and places inside it.

This story is timeless, so I aimed to capture something of the time, but also make sure it always feels relatable and familiar."

Romeo and Juliet the S t or y The play begins as Juliet Capulet wakes up from a deep, drugged sleep. She is in a burial vault and her beloved Romeo is dead. She pieces together the events that have led to this moment, and we experience what has happened through her eyes… The action begins in Verona where two families, the Capulets and the Montagues, are deeply divided. A street fight breaks out between the two households’ servants. The Prince arrives and declares that the punishment for any further fighting will be death. This same Prince, named Paris, wants to marry Juliet. He tells her mother, Lady Capulet, and she invites him to a party at their house that evening to meet her daughter.

window. They declare their love and agree to get married the next day. The couple plans their secret wedding. Romeo gets help from Friar Laurence, and Juliet’s Nurse helps her. Just after the ceremony, Tybalt sees Romeo again and challenges him to a fight. Romeo says no: since he and Juliet are now married, he sees Tybalt as family. But Mercutio decides to fight Tybalt in Romeo’s place. Romeo tries to stop the fight, but Tybalt kills Mercutio. In a rage, Romeo immediately fights and kills Tybalt. Prince Paris arrives on the scene and banishes Romeo from Verona.

The Montagues have a son, Romeo. Romeo tells his cousin Benvolio that he’s terribly sad because he’s in love with a young woman named Rosaline, who does not love him back. Romeo and Benvolio know about the Capulet party and that Rosaline is going to be there. They aren’t invited but they decide to go anyway; since it’s a masked party, they won’t be recognized as Montagues.

Romeo and Juliet say goodbye and Romeo leaves Verona. Then Juliet’s mother tells her that she has to marry Prince Paris in just a few days. When Juliet refuses, Lady Capulet threatens to disown her. Juliet asks for help from Friar Laurence, who gives her a potion that causes a deep sleep that looks like death. The plan is simple: Juliet will take the potion, appear dead, and be placed in the family tomb. Friar Laurence will write to Romeo so that Romeo can be there when Juliet wakes up, and the couple can run away to Mantua to wait until a time when everyone will welcome them back.

Romeo gets into the party, sees Juliet, and they instantly fall in love. But then Juliet’s cousin Tybalt recognizes Romeo and is furious that a Montague is at a Capulet party. Lady Capulet stops Tybalt from starting a fight, but Tybalt vows revenge on Romeo. Romeo slips away from the party and hides in the Capulet family orchard. He sees Juliet looking out from a high

romeo and juliet Dire c t o r ’ s No te s Many of you attending this performance today are already aware that Juliet and Romeo die at the end of the play. And if you didn’t know that going into the show, you will find out within the first few lines: “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life”. What opportunity is created when staging such a well-known play that reveals its famous ending before the audience has even gotten settled in? This question led me towards a telling of the story that begins at the end. We find Juliet in the tomb, awakening from a poisoned stupor, only to discover that her secret plan has gone horribly awry. She then reassembles the events that led her to this moment, so we are seeing all the action through her eyes – moments she remembers and incidents she would have heard about. The crypt and the things that fill it are the backdrop for her imaginings.

Preliminary set design by Pam Johnson

I am grateful to work alongside this group of artists, administrators and technicians in this season that sees us back in the tents after a long absence. Some of the finest actors in Canada work at Bard on the Beach and this production intentionally puts the focus on the versatility of the performers. Live singing and overt theatricality mark this return to the stage. The past few years of living under the shadow of death make us strange bedfellows with the characters in this play. We know how their story ends, and in a way, we know how all our stories will end. The way we get there is where the mystery begins. Anita Rochon, Director | April 2022

About ANITA ROCHON Anita is returning to Bard on the Beach after directing Cymbeline in 2014. She co-artistic directs The Chop in Vancouver with Emelia Symington Fedy, a company that produces original work and tours nationally and internationally. Anita has directed at the Shaw Festival, Electric Company Theatre, Theatre Replacement, Belfry Theatre, Globe Theatre and Vancouver Opera. She is a recipient of the Ray Michal Prize, the Siminovitch Protégé prize and a Mayor’s Arts Award.

Set design inspiration for the crypt in Romeo and Juliet courtesy of Set Designer Pam Johnson

Experiencing this familiar story from Juliet’s perspective puts some things into sharper focus – like her relationship with her family – and asks us to consider what it would be like to be a young woman in this society. We broaden the scope of who-plays-what on stage in the representation of love in many forms: between a parent and their child, between childhood friends, between a mentor and a pupil, between a young woman and her nurse and, of course, between two young people who just met. The original script is still our map, but sometimes we will take a different path to get where the story is going. 29

Romeo and Juliet behin d t he sce n es Each season, we engage a team of gifted designers to work on our productions. Their skilled sound, lighting, set and costume designs truly bring our plays to life on stage! Here’s a look at what went into creating the costumes, set and musical composition for Romeo and Juliet.

“The music of the show was inspired by minimalism and wanting to use the voice of the actors to create the atmosphere. For the actual composition of the music, I had an initial meeting with the director to determine the direction of sound, then I began sketching out the main themes for the show. Once I had the vocals mapped out, I added light recorded Juliet costume sketch backtracks that by Carmen Alatorre could be incorporated along with the live sound.” Joelysa Pankanea, Composer & Musical Director

"The costume design for this production of Romeo and Juliet is a reinterpretation of styles from the Italian Renaissance. I was looking to evoke an ethereal atmosphere in which the costumes have transparent, iridescent and soft qualities, representing the memory of the story as told from Juliet's perspective. We wanted to create stylized, simplified and elegant silhouettes by revisiting the fashion of the 15th century through a slightly different lens.

“The design inspiration for Romeo and Juliet came from the crypts, tombs and catacombs of old Verona. Our production of Romeo and Juliet starts at the moment Juliet awakens from her drug-induced slumber, so our whole story takes place in a tomb surrounded by the ancestral bones of both the Capulets and Montagues.

Like most designers, I start by reading the script to get some initial thoughts and ideas. Then, I have a conversation with the director to define a visual concept or world in which we see the story taking place. Extensive historic and visual research follows, as we collect a series of reference images and do initial sketches. Many conversations happen before we define what the final look of the show will be as we collaborate with the whole design team to build a cohesive vision!" Carmen Alatorre, Costume Designer Romeo costume sketch by Carmen Alatorre

My initial design process started with reading the script, and then having a lively discussion with the director. I then researched various crypts, tombs, catacombs and burial sites, starting with what’s claimed to be the original Romeo and Juliet crypt!"
