The Adapted.

Taking a look back to the older lifestyles, needs, traditions and availability of building materials helps us recognise the value of historic buildings and the importance in preserving them.

However, the importance in appreciating the environment that that building is found in is essential.

In a similar way, the sun, the wind, and the landscape as well as the historic character of The Gig House, led me to a series of architectural form experimentation that may led to the adaptation of it to its surroundings.

Idea of using the existing as a way of taking care to a treasure instead of copying it. Preserving the old visually, led to the juxtaposition of my new simplistic design. + Architectural principles and the nature of the Gig House itself.

Vitruvius stated six principles that led to a more organised way of analysing his buildings. Similarly, analysing the geometry, proportion and arrangement of the old building led me to some considerations that informed my developed and final architectural forms.

The architectural design of the Canadian Pavilion in La Biennale di Giardini controlled the path into and out of the building, giving the sense of as if you are guided into a shell.

Architecture is thus used as a tool to control the movement of someone into a space at the conscious or unconscious level.

Location of Canadian and British Pavilion in La Biennale di Giardini

Human attention is triggered by an object that grabs the attention because of a previos experience, and human beings deconstruct and reconstruct the memory triggered by the object.

As indicated in the hierarchical diagram, the council chamber of this building has been a space of interest and inspiration for this project. The way Aalto considered how the council chamber works may have included strategies of architectural massing; involving the repetition and overlap of the squared plan to provide an external circulation around the council chamber.

Referring back to Freud, the psychoanalyst, may required the addition of certain element in order to re-establish a cohesive whole and ''save'' the existing memories.

This links with the design of ''The Adapted'', where discernible additions were made in order to contradict what was already there.

In a similar way, analysing the existing structure of The Gig House, provided a direction of how an extension could be designed in a way that unites the old with the new and uses the old parts as a reference towards the design of the new parts in order to achieve a harmonious whole. This was not about mimicking what was already there, but rather work with the existing.

This is referring to ideas of allowing those parts to be noticeable from what is existing.

Even though Aalto`s technique of repetition of the existing is used, it is done in a contemporary manner in order to make both, new and old juxtapose.

External Corrugated iron cladding.

Practicality. can withstand the harsh weather around the cottage.

Visually. contradicts the external old appearance that is being preserved.

Acoustically. can produce a wonderful sound when there is rainfall.

Internal old brick.

Visually. contradicts the minimalistic modern interior design and at the same time it reveals history.

Touch. completes the visual aesthetic; engagement with the building.

Glass installed onto external old wall for preservation.

Visually. can immediately reveal history.

Acoustically. glass installed is double glazed and can meet the acoustical requirements.

Rammed Earth Walls on the Interior.

Technically. Absorbs light and thermal energy from direct sunlight provided by specifically designed windows and stores it as thermal mass. This energy can be released in the evening.

Vision and touch. Consisting of mainly sand/ clay it can achieve the organic aesthetic that is required.

Passive Ventilation Mainly, there are two ventilation stategies involved in this project.

SIngle ventilation can occur in the kitchen, living (4.8m) and ground floor bedroom (3m) areas. In order for this to be the case, the width of the space must be no longer than 6m.

Stack ventilation can occur again in the living space as indicated in Section AA. Similarly, the air is circulated in the workshop area and on the first floor (Section BB).

Passive Solar Design South elevation receives most sunlight, thus sliding windows and a window on the pitched roof are installed in the living space, taking advantage of the direct sunlight throughout the day.

The direct sunlight provided warms the air close to the ground; warmer air particles rise so there is a constant circulation, providing constant heat.

In the walkway (Section BB) direct morning sunlight is provided on a rammed earth wall, which absorbs heat energy from the sun and stores it as thermal mass, releasing it in the evening, Rammed earth is of a required thickness that is neither too thick nor too thin, in order to store and release the heat absorbed.

Rainwater harvesting:

Former brick made oven can be used as a fireplace: An energy efficient fireplace can be installed in the location of the existing fireplace.

This fireplace is located in between the living room and the kitchen, having an ideal location for the warming up the most frequently used spaces.

Heat can be also provided in the workshop as it is found adjacently.

Proposal for curved roof: A more efficient harvesting can be achieved when the morphology of the curve is altered from low to high, facing towards the SW in this case.

The stronger wind blown on site is from the SW, therefore there is a maximum rainwater harvesting with the reshaping of the roof.

This rainwater can be then: 1. Stored in a tank 2. Used for gardening 3. Get filtered 4. If filtered, used for shower 5. Further filtering can make the water drinkable

Proposal for Hydroelectricity mechanism: Propels can be installed into the adjecent stream (Chilton Stream).

The flow of the stream will convert kinetic energy into electrical energy.

Electricity can be then provided to the building

Coffee Roasting is an Art

Beans are heated and circulate around the roasting machine by the beating of the rotating drums

Coffee Masters / Artisans Experienced Roastmakers use; Sound,

Beas have already popped two times and are checked by the roastmaster

Sight, and Smell, to determine the time that beans are roasted to Perfection.

Timing is everything.

Roasting determines the final flavour.

Different roasting times create different types of coffee

Roasting Process:

Hot Roasted beans are funnelled out

+ Beans are funneled in the roasting machine when the interior reaches the desirable temperature. + Beans are heated and circulate around the roasting machine by the beating of the rotating drums. + Beans first turn into a yellowish colour + They pop and double in size (this is the point where Humidity escapes from the bean). + Beans reach 204 degrees and beggin to brown. (oils including Caffeol start to emerge and give essence to the coffee`s flavour)

Insight of the coffee manufacture-especifically roasting; sound, smells and touch Engage client with the process that a green bean undergoes in order to become a cup of coffee.

This may be done by involving the client in the Roasting process by architectural means.

Structure of Caffeine`s chemical formula can be analysed and used as an organizing tool, to define the large space as a hierarchial division of smaller parts.

My philosophy behind every project is my curiosity that prevails

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, once described the human feeling of uncomfortableness in ignorance, as if it is the game ''Telephone''

where a student tells a story and you repeat to the next person. He then asked young students what happens by the time you get to the last person, and the answer was that it turns out to be a completely different

story. He then stated that this is because the conveyance of information was relying on the ''eye witnessed testimony'' which is not a reliable and accepted process in the science borders. It may be therefore

concluded that human perception system is not accurate at all and that there are many ways of getting information wrong.

My own assumption is that you must research all the possibilities to increase the potential of a design, and come up with ideas that are informed by valid research. Don`t contaminate your thoughts with unreliable influences
