Welkom!

Op dit moment zijn er twee grote nieuwe tentoonstellingen te zien in het Van Abbemuseum. Ze zijn het resultaat van vele maanden en jaren van voorbereiding van iedereen in het museum. Beide bevatten veel vertrouwde moderne kunst, maar geen van beide is een moderne tentoonstelling.

Ze kijken terug naar het verleden vanuit het perspectief van het heden – en door dit te doen veranderen ze ons begrip van de geschiedenis.

Er was eens…De collectie nu vertelt het verhaal van de collecties van het museum en hun relatie tot de maatschappij. Deze tentoonstelling wil de energie en emoties van de twintigste eeuw laten zien met een nadruk op de jaren na 1989. Museum of Arte Útil daarentegen toont een alternatieve relatie tot het verleden, waarbij de nadruk ligt op de potentiële gebruiksmogelijkheden van kunst die worden bekeken vanuit onze huidige tijd.

Naar mijn idee staan deze tentoonstellingen voor verschillende benaderingen van de overgangstijd waarin we ons allen bevinden. We leven in een tijd waarin moderne denkwijzen aan het wijken zijn voor de hedendaagse realiteit. Onze taak als museum is om deze overgang te herkennen en er een driedimensionale vorm aan te geven. We vertrouwen erop dat u geniet van de uitdaging waarvoor deze tijd ons stelt en dat u de verschillen tussen de twee tentoonstellingen zult waarderen. Wij nodigen u uit om een bijdrage te leveren met uw eigen gedachten over de wijze waarop we kunst vandaag de dag kunnen gebruiken.

Welcome!

You will find two major new exhibitions in the Van Abbemuseum at the moment. They are the result of many months and years of preparation by everyone in the museum. Both contain much familiar modern art; but neither of them is a modern exhibition.

Instead they look back at the past from the perspective of the present – and in doing so change the understanding of history.

Once Upon a Time.. The Collection Now tells the story of the museum’s collections and their relationship to society. It seeks to represent the energies and emotions of the last 100 years with an emphasis on the years after 1989. In contrast, Museum of Arte Útil proposes an alternative relation to the past, one in which the potential uses of art are foregrounded and seen from a 2014 point of view.

My understanding of these exhibitions is that they represent different approaches to the transitional moment in which we all find ourselves. We live at a time when modern ways of thinking are giving way to contemporary realities. Our task as a museum is to recognise this transition and give it three-dimensional form. We trust that you will enjoy the challenge of these times and appreciate the contrasts between the two exhibitions.

And we invite you to contribute with your own conclusions about the ways in which we can use art today.

Nick Aikens (NA), conservator Van Abbemuseum: Wat is Arte Útil?

Tania Bruguera: Met ‘útil’ in Arte Útil worden niet alleen de nuttige dingen bedoeld die kunst kan voortbrengen of de concrete gunstige resultaten voor de gebruikers ervan, maar de term verwijst naar kunst als een instrument voor sociale verandering.

NA: Kan je iets vertellen over de criteria voor Arte Útil?

TB: Ik had al eerder een idee van wat Arte Útil was, maar toen ik het selectieproces met andere mensen moest delen, hebben we de acht criteria geformuleerd. Het eerste criterium draait om het uitdenken van een nieuw gebruik van kunst in de samenleving. Arte Útil heeft namelijk twee kanten: enerzijds is dat er voorstellen worden gedaan voor een nieuwe manier om kunst te gebruiken voor iets anders en anderzijds is dat wordt uitgevonden hoe alle voordelen die kunst te bieden heeft, kunnen worden gebruikt om dingen te doen waartoe we anders niet in staat zouden zijn.

Het laatste criterium gaat over esthetiek. Wij stellen dat esthetiek deel uitmaakt van een transformatieproces, dus een integraal onderdeel is van een veel groter proces.

Museum of Arte Útil is initiated by the artist Tania Bruguera, developed with the Van Abbemuseum and constructLab and realised by its users.

Nick Aikens (NA), curator Van Abbemuseum: What is Arte Útil?

Tania Bruguera: The útil in Arte Útil means not only the beneficial things that art can produce, or the concrete beneficial outcomes for its users, but it means art as a tool for social change.

NA: Could you talk about the criteria for Arte Útil?

TB: I previously had an idea of what Arte útil was but when I needed to share with other people the selection process we formulated the eight criteria. The first deals with re-thinking a new use for art in society. Because Arte Útil has two aspects – one is which to propose a new way in which art can be used for something else, but also how to use all the benefits art offers so you are able to do things that otherwise you cannot do. The last criteria deals with aesthetics - so we are claiming that aesthetics is part of a transformation process – that is an integral part of a much larger process.

NA: Waarom wil je als kunstenaar een beweging een naam geven? Ben je niet tegen een canon van de kunstgeschiedenis? Waarom doe je dat in een museum?

TB: Door het als beweging te benoemen, erken ik dat het geen nieuwe praktijk is. Dit is niet mijn eigen persoonlijke praktijk, maar iets met een verleden. In 1981 was er een tentoonstelling genaamd Useful Art in het Queens Museum in New York. Daar werd het nut van kunst echter belicht vanuit de esthetiek van kunstobjecten die al nuttig waren. In ons geval proberen we de nadruk te leggen op wat wij ‘aes-ethics’ noemen, namelijk de schoonheid van de ethiek die voortvloeit uit het werken in de reële wereld en met verandering. Ik zocht naar een manier of vorm om deze discussie naar een niveau te brengen waar meer mensen erbij betrokken zouden worden en het museum is daarvoor de juiste plek.

NA: Wat betekent het om een praktijk die plaatsvindt in de wereld, dus buiten de museumzalen, naar het museum te brengen?

TB: Ik denk dat instellingen steeds meer belangstelling hebben voor dit soort productie en voor sociale praktijken. Maar je hebt gelijk, wat betekent het om een levend werk te institutionaliseren? Sommige mensen hebben me gevraagd: “Waarom moet je dit in een museum doen?” Dat doe ik juist om een debat te voeren met het museum en kunstenaars over de uitdagingen waarvoor we staan als dit soort werk onvermijdelijk wordt geïnstitutionaliseerd.

NA: Je hebt als kunstenaar de term Arte Útil geïntroduceerd. Wat is voor jou het verschil tussen je rol als initiator van een dergelijk project en als maker van je eigen werk?

TB: Allereerst moet ik opmerken dat de term Arte Útil voor het eerst in de jaren ’60 is gebruikt door Eduardo Costa, een Argentijnse kunstenaar, in een manifest waarin hij een werk

NA: Why do you want to name a movement as an artist? Aren’t you against a canon of art history, why do that inside a museum?

TB: To call it a movement is to acknowledge it is not a new practice – and this is not my own personal practice, it has a history.

In 1981 there was an exhibition called Useful Art in the Queens Museum in New York – but the way they saw the usefulness of art was via the beatification of already useful art objects. In our case we are trying to hi-light what we call ‘aes-ethics’, which is the beauty of the ethics that is generated in the process of working in the real and with change. I was looking for a way or form to bring the conversation to a level where it would involve more people and the museum is the place to do that.

NA: What does it mean to bring practice that happens in the world, outside galleries, into the museum?

TB: I think institutions are more and more interested in dealing with this type of production and with social practices. But, you are right, what does it mean to institutionalize a living work? Some people have asked me ‘why do you need to do a museum’. It’s precisely to have the debate with the museum and artists about the challenges when inevitably this type of work becomes institutionalized.

NA: You are an artist who has introduced the term Arte Ùtil.

What is the difference for you as an initiator of a project like this and creating your own work?

TB: The first thing to say is that the first time Arte Útil was used was in the manifesto of Eduardo Costa, an Argentinian artists who in the 60s wrote a manifesto, which was the description of a work he wanted to do in the streets.

beschreef dat hij op straat wilde uitvoeren. Ik heb de term dus niet bedacht, maar ik probeer het gebruik ervan te verbreden. Als kunstenaar word je voortdurend geconfronteerd met ideeën over auteurschap. In dit geval is de auteur veranderd in een zogenaamde initiator, wat inhoudt dat mijn rol niet bestaat uit de volledige uitvoering van dit idee, maar uit het presenteren ervan en het op gang brengen van een discussie. Als alles goed verloopt, gaan hopelijk meer mensen zich hiermee bezighouden en zal dit worden voortgezet door de gebruikers van het project.

NA: Tot slot wil ik je vragen of je vindt dat alle kunst Útil zou moeten zijn?

TB: Als opperpropagandist zou ik zeggen: ja natuurlijk! Maar in alle ernst denk ik dat in 2013, in een eeuw die dus pas 13 jaar oud is, het meeste werk waarover we nadenken of dat we maken nog steeds gebaseerd is op denkwijzen over kunst uit de 20ste eeuw. Dus hopelijk ja, alle kunst zou ernaar moeten streven Útil te zijn!

As a practitioner you are constantly confronted with ideas of authorship. Here the author has changed into what we call the initiator, meaning my role is not to carry this idea all the way through, but to present it and to start a conversation. Hopefully, if to goes well, more people engage and it continues through the users of the project.

NA: Lastly I would like to ask if you think all art should be Ùtil?

TB: As propagandist in chief I would say yes, of course! Seriously, I think in 2013, 13 years into the 21st century, most of the work we think about or produce still uses ways of thinking about art from the 20th century. So hopefully yes – all art should strive to be Útil!

De Honest Shop is eerlijk over producten, mensen en locatie. De producten zijn lokaal en echt zelfgemaakt door mensen die hier wonen, met hun eigen handen of met hulp van vrienden. Er is geen sprake van airmiles, bonuspunten of geveinsde glimlachjes. De winkel is een daad van vertrouwen en vrijgevigheid.

Dit zijn de spelregels voor deelname aan de Honest Shop, een project dat in 2012 werd geïnitieerd door Grizedale Arts na de renovatie van het Coniston Institute, een klein buurtcentrum in het Engelse Lake District National Park in de regio Cumbria.

Tijdens de Dutch Design Week in oktober ging ook in Eindhoven de eerste fase van dit project van start: In het museum werd een ‘Honest Stall’ geïnstalleerd. Daar kan iedereen de producten van lokale leveranciers ontdekken en zelf meedoen aan de ontwikkeling van de winkel. De Honest Shop, die volgt op de Honest Stall, vindt vanaf 7 december plaats in het kader van het Museum of Arte Útil en zal na de tentoonstelling hopelijk blijven bestaan en verder worden uitgebreid.

The Shop will be honest about products, people and place.

The products will be local and homemade by people living here using their fingers or the fingers of friends. There will be no air miles, road miles or fake smiles. The shop is an act of trust and generosity.

These are the rules to follow when taking part in the Honest Shop, a project initiated by Grizedale Arts in 2012 after the renovation of the Coniston Institute, a small community centre located in the Lake District National Park in the region of Cumbria, England.

During the Dutch Design Week in October, the first phase of the project started in Eindhoven, too: an Honest Stall was installed in the museum. There, it is possible to discover the production of local suppliers and everyone is able to participate in the development of the shop. The Honest Shop will take place in the frame of the Museum of Arte Útil and hopefully it will be maintained and expanded further after the exhibition.

Trevor Paglen Code Names

Code Names (2007-13) is een groot muurwerk van de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Trevor Paglen (V.S., 1974). Code Names bestaat uit een lijst van meer dan 1.500 woorden, zinnen en termen die verwijzen naar lopende Amerikaanse militaire programma’s, waarvan het bestaan of het doel vertrouwelijk is. Het zijn de namen van geclassificeerde oefeningen en eenheden, programma’s van inlichtingendiensten en “Special Access Programmes” van het Pentagon.

Het werk en het perspectief van Paglen, dat hij de afgelopen jaren ontwikkeld heeft, krijgt extra betekenis in het licht van de recente reeks van openbaringen over de activiteiten van het Amerikaanse leger en zijn zogenaamde bondgenoten en de verbazingwekkende bewakingstechnieken die veel westerse regeringen tegenwoordig hanteren.

De Code Names, waarmee de kunstenaar begon in 2007, komen voornamelijk uit openbare documenten. Deze versie is speciaal voor het Van Abbemuseum geactualiseerd met de onthullingen van klokkenluider Edward Snowden. Deze lijst is zeker niet allesomvattend, het toont slechts een momentopname van een veel grotere wereld van geheime operaties.

Trevor Paglen Code Names 19.09.2013– 05.01.2014 The Van Abbemuseum presents the work Code Names (2007-13)

by American artist Trevor Paglen (USA, b. 1974). Code Names comprises a list of over 1500 words, phrases, and terms that designate active US military programmes whose existence or purpose is classified. The names include classified exercises and units, intelligence programs, information compartments, and Pentagon “Special Access Programmes.”

Developed over many years, Paglen’s practice and perspective takes on added significance with the wave of revelations over recent years surrounding the activity of the US military and its so-called allies, as well as the harrowing surveillance techniques many western governments now operate.

The Code Names in this vast wall piece, which the artist began in 2007, are primarily sourced from public budget documents. The version for the Van Abbemuseum has been updated to include disclosures by the whistleblower Edward Snowden. This list is by no means comprehensive and represents just a small snapshot of a much larger world of secret operations.

Stephen Wright Usership & Spectatorship Stephen Wright is a professor at the European School of Visual Arts. For the Museum of Arte Útil Wright has been commissioned to write ‘A Lexicon for Usership’. The below entries are excepts form the Lexicon. They are meant as a useful entry point to the Museum of Arte Útil and to two opposing ways of viewing - or using - the museum.

Usership The past two decades have witnessed the emergence of a new category of political subjectivity: that of usership. It’s not as if using is anything new -- people have been using tools, languages and any variety of goods and services (not to mention mind-altering substances) since time immemorial. But the rise of user-generated content and value in 2.0 culture, as well as democratic polities whose legitimacy is founded on the ability of the governed to appropriate and use available political and economic instruments, has produced active “users” (not just rebels, prosumers or automatons) whose agency is exerted, paradoxically, exactly where it is expected.

Usership represents a radical challenge to at least three stalwart conceptual institutions in contemporary culture: spectatorship, expert culture, and ownership.

Modernist artistic conventions, premised on so-called disinterested spectatorship, dismiss usership (and use value, rights of usage) as inherently instrumental -- and the mainstream artworld’s physical and conceptual architecture is entirely unprepared to even speak of usership, even as many contemporary artistic practices imply a regime of engagement and relationality entirely at odds with that described by spectatorship. In the artworld and other lifeworlds, it is expert culture -- whether embodied in curatorship or formulated by the city hall’s design office and other wardens of the possible -- which is most hostile to usership. From the perspective of expertise, premised as it is on notions of universality and the general interest, usership is a particularly egregious mode of self-interest. For the expert, to put it bluntly, use is invariably misuse. Usership represents a still more deep-seated challenge to ownership in an economy where surplus-value extraction is increasingly focused on use: how long will communities of use sit by as their user-generated content value, rather than being remunerated, is expropriated and privatized?

Of course, usership is a something of a double-edged sword, which is precisely what makes it interesting to consider. It is also what earns usership such disdain from so many contemporary theoretical outlooks. Politically, it is as ungovernable by neoliberalism (which nevertheless relies on its dynamism as a form of accumulation) as it is unpalatable to those seeking to perpetuate the social-democratic consensus. Usership is neither revolutionary (usership shares none of the messianic potential of the proletariat) nor is it docile or submissive. It is hands on, task specific, proximate and self-regulating. And it is operative only in the here and now – it has no transcendental horizon line. We might put it this way: users always and only play away games -- they don’t have their own field. They just use the available fields. For one thing, because users know they are not owners, and that whatever their demands, whatever their successes, users know that, no matter what, it will never be all theirs. The challenge is clearly to imagine, and to instantiate, a noninstrumental, emancipated form of usership.

Though usership remains dramatically under theorized -- indeed, the word itself, though immediately understandable, has not been ratified by those indexes of expert culture called dictionaries -- there are some compelling philosophical underpinnings that may help to better grasp the concept. The most over-arching is perhaps Ludwig Wittgenstein’s user-based theory of meaning in his Philosophical Investigations. Wittgenstein argues that in language, all the meaning that there is, and all the stability, is determined by the users of that language, and by nothing else. It seems radically relativistic, yet language usership provides a relative stability of meaning – for the language is used by all, owned by none. It changes, but no one user can effect change; we are, at best, co-authors in the language game of usership. Wittgenstein’s insight provides a sort of prism through which to imagine all forms of usership in terms of a self-regulating language game.

So if usership names a category of engagement, of cognitive privilege (if one may call it that), of those whose repurposing of art is neither that of a spectator, an expert nor an owner, then why has art-critical discourse and practice been so reluctant to adopt it? Artworld ideologues speak of “participation,” often front-loading the term with adjectives like “free” and “emancipated.” We speak freely of “art lovers,” but “art users” smacks of philistinism – which certainly says something about the lingering aristocratic values underpinning contemporary art’s ostensibly democratic ethos. Perhaps part of the reason for the artworld’s discomfort with usership is that it is an eminently unromantic category. It has none of gusty tailings of hijacking, pirating, détournement and other such forms of performative high jinks that have become so fashionable in artworldly circles. It may ultimately better name the underlying logic of those operations, but it remains essentially different.

Because it is radically un-performative. To perform usership would be to spec-

tacularize it, make it an event -- that is, to negate it, to make it into something else.

Here the distinction between spectatorship and usership is clearest cut: spectatorship is to the spectacle as usership is to… the usual.

Spectatorship To a still greater extent than objecthood or authorship, spectatorship continues to enjoy almost self-evident status in conventional discourse as a necessary component of any plausible artworld. Indeed, in both popular and learned parlance, there is a tendency to conflate looking at something, and in some cases simply seeing something, with spectatorship. Yet spectatorship is not synonymous with mere viewing; it is a powerful conceptual institution in contemporary societies with a specific history – one whose historical underpinning needs to be unpacked.

The critical sermons of contemporary art are rife with celebration about free and active viewer participation. Yet there is something almost pathetic about such claims at a time when ever more practitioners are deliberately impairing the coefficient of artistic visibility of their activity, beating an offensive retreat into the shadows of the artworld’s attention economy, envisaging forms of relationality and usage that fly in the face of the very regime of visibility designated by the collective noun “spectatorship.” When art appears outside the authorized performative framework, there is no reason that it should occur to those engaging with it to constitute themselves as spectators. Such practices seem to break with spectatorship altogether, to which they increasingly prefer the more extensive and inclusive notion of usership. Is the current mainstream focus on spectatorship – evidenced by a number of recent theoretical publications (Marie-Josée Mondzain’s Homo Spectator, Christian Ruby’s Figure of the Spectator, or Jacques Rancière’s Emancipated Spectator being but the most speculative examples) – anything more than a last-ditch effort to stave off a paradigm shift already well underway in art? The real question, of course, remains: what alternative forms of usership of art are today being put forward to displace and replace it? But to better understand the full implications of this now largely obsolescent institution, it is useful to recall its historical trajectory.

It was Nietzsche, who, in the third essay of his Genealogy of Morals, first pointed out how the concept of “spectatorship” was cunningly introduced into aesthetics in the late eighteenth century by Immanuel Kant in his Critique of Judgement, “unconsciously” making the spectator the new heroic figure of art of the modern era. Nietzsche’s own rather conventional proposal – reintroduce the artist as the

authentic subject of art – is less interesting than his mordant critique of what is implied by the paradigm shift brought about by Kant. The problem with Kant’s aesthetic paradigm, he argues, is that it sets up a conceptual edifice in which “a lack of any refined first-hand experience reposes in the shape of a fat worm of error. ‘That is beautiful,’ said Kant, ‘which gives us pleasure without interest.’ Without interest!”

One can only imagine Nietzsche’s incredulous howl at the very thought… Yet his insight is unassailable: Kant introduced what he called “disinterested spectatorship” into aesthetics and made it one of the two mainstays of the conceptual (and hence physical) architecture of museums for the two centuries to come. The consequences of Kant’s paradoxical brainchild can hardly be overstated, for not only did he introduce a fundamentally passive form of relationality (spectatorship) as the cornerstone of the aesthetic regime of art, he shored it up by insisting on its désintéressement – in other words, that it remain exempt from any possible use, usership or use value. This would be the grounds for art’s permanent status of ontological exception throughout the twentieth century.

In Shipwreck with Spectator, Hans Blumenberg examines the genealogy of spectatorship, with particular attention to the metaphorical imperative of spectatorship to contemplate the distress of the shipwrecked from a safe vantage point on dry land -- metaphorical, that is, of theory’s relationship to practice (“theoría,” he points out somewhat speculatively, derives from theoros, “spectator”). It must be said, however, that the advent of Kantian spectatorship had the tremendous advantage of opening up a new space for aesthetic practice – the autonomous field of art. Yet, at the same time – though this would only become obvious two centuries on when art had conquered and fully occupied that space – it tethered art to autonomy and to spectatorship. Today we see cutting edge practices seeking to wrest themselves from spectatorship and the autonomy of art (perceived as shackles rather than opportunities), not in a desire to return to a pre-modern paradigm, but to reactivate a mode of usership that remains forbidden under the regime of spectatorship. It is nevertheless remarkable to see the extent to which the conceptual architecture of contemporary art conventions of display derive from Kantian premises; and to what extent they have been at once normalized through institutional embodiment and naturalized in discourse – even as they are becoming increasingly out of joint with emergent practices.

Verhaallijnen / Storylines Er was eens... De collectie nu / Once Upon a Time... The Collection Now

The museum knows that a narrative of the self is, by definition, incomplete. Under the title of Storylines, it therefore invites people from outside the museum, individuals with a different kind of knowledge and a different background, to add their own stories and interpretations.

An “open call” to interested people invites them to develop a guide or tour themselves. This ensures that a wider range of stories and memories, recounted in a variety of voices, will eventually emerge from the collections.

At the start of the exhibition there are three Storylines available for visitors: the soundspace This is not a space, the audio tour No Kiddin’ and Punt.Point, in which visitors are invited to try new positions in the museum. These can be found in the toolshop at the start of the exhibition.

Omdat het museum weet dat de eigen vertelling per definitie incompleet is, nodigt het met Verhaallijnen mensen uit van buiten het museum, met een ander soort kennis en achtergrond, om hun verhalen en interpretaties toe te voegen.

Via een ‘open call’ worden bezoekers uitgenodigd nieuwe verhalen toe te voegen. Zo zal uit de collecties op den duur een breder scala aan verhalen en herinneringen naar voren komen, verteld door een veelheid aan stemmen. This is not a space Hoorbare architectuur De architectuur van het Van Abbemuseum en de expositie zijn bepalend voor hoe de bezoeker de kunstwerken ervaart. Hierbinnen kiest deze zijn eigen weg. This is not a space is een hoorbare fictieve laag over de fysieke omgeving. Deze wordt langzaam maar zeker een vanzelfsprekend onderdeel van de architectuur. This is not a space Audible Architecture The architecture of the Van Abbemuseum building and the exhibition both impact how the visitor experiences the works of art. In this Storyline, the visitor chooses the route. This is not a space is an audible fictional layer superimposed on the physical surroundings. It gradually becomes an unquestioned part of the architecture. The illusion of new space draws the visitor through the exhibition along unanticipated ways, so as to experience surprising moments of confrontation, recognition and contemplation.

audiotour No Kiddin’ Concept: Marleen Hartjes

No Kiddin’ - audiotour door de ogen van kinderen Binnen deze Verhaallijn nodigt het museum de bezoeker uit om door de ogen van kinderen naar de collectie te kijken. Kinderen kijken anders, zien andere dingen dan volwassenen en leggen vaak opvallende verbindingen en inspirerende vergelijkingen. Het museum vangt deze manier van kijken in een audiotour. Kinderen van 5 tot 17 jaarvertellen hun verhalen over de kunstwerken. De audiotour begint op de bovenste verdieping, met de meest recente kunstwerken, en neemt de bezoeker mee naar beneden. Naarmate de kunstwerken ouder worden, worden ook de kinderen ouder.

No Kiddin’ - an audio tour through children’s eyes In this Storyline, the museum invites visitors to view the collection through the eyes of children. Children have a distinct way of looking; they see different things from adults, and often perceive striking connections and inspiring analogies that grown-ups miss. The museum incorporates their way of seeing into an audio tour.

Children and young people aged from 5 to 17 recount their reactions to the works of art. The audio tour starts on the top floor where the most recent work is shown, and accompanies the visitor down to lower levels.

The older the works of art become, the older the children providing the commentary.

De meest gebruikelijke houding om in een museum een kunstwerk te bekijken is staand, maar hoe zou het zijn om andere houdingen uit te proberen? Verandert dat de ervaring van het museum, de architectuur, de kunstwerken en de andere bezoekers?

Kunstenaar en choreograaf Sara Wookey en architect Rennie Tang hebben hiervoor Punt.Point ontwikkeld. Bezoekers krijgen een tasje mee met attributen en worden zelf ook uitgenodigd nieuwe posities toe te voegen.

In the museum the most common position to experience an artwork is standing. What would it be like to experiment with other positions?

Would it change your experience of the museum, the architecture, the artworks or the other visitiors perceptions? To try this out, artist and choreographer Sara Wookey and architect Rennie Tang have developed Punt.Point. Visitors will take a pouch with tools and are also invited to add new positions themselves.

The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist Michael Rakowitz Onlangs kocht het Van Abbemuseum een installatie met de intrigerende titel The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist (2009-2010) van de Amerikaans-Iraakse kunstenaar Michael Rakowitz.

Het werk bestaat onder meer uit een tafel met objecten, gemaakt van papier-maché. Het zijn replica’s van objecten uit de collectie van het Nationaal Museum van Irak in Bagdad, een van de belangrijkste archeologische verzamelingen ter wereld. Tijdens de inval van de V.S. in 2003 werd het museum geplunderd. Duizenden objecten werden gestolen, vele zijn nog steeds niet teruggevonden. Rakowitz besloot de gestolen objecten te reconstrueren met Arabische kranten en verpakkingsmateriaal van producten uit het Midden-Oosten. Het materiaal haalt de objecten naar deze tijd, en voegt aan het verhaal een nieuw hoofdstuk toe.

De titel van het werk verwijst naar de naam van de weg door de beroemde Ishtar Poort, een van de stadspoorten van het oude Babylon. De poort is in de vorige eeuw naar Berlijn getransporteerd en bevindt zich in het Pergamom Museum.

The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist gaat over geschiedenis en identiteit, over de bedreiging daarvan in tijden van oorlog en bezetting. Het laat ons nadenken over het belang van verzamelen en over het museum als plek voor het collectief geheugen, waar belangrijke objecten worden bewaard en geïnterpreteerd.

The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist is onderdeel van de collectietentoonstelling Er was eens… De collectie nu en is te zien in de projectruimte op de tweede verdieping van de nieuwbouw. In deze zaal zijn wisselende presentaties te zien die verband houden met de collectie.

The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist Michael Rakowitz The Van Abbemuseum recently purchased an installation with the intriguing title The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist (2009-2010) by the American-Iraqi artist Michael Rakowitz. The work consists, amongst other things, of a table with objects, made of papier-mâché.

They are replicas of objects from the collection of the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad, one of the most important archaeological collections in the world. The museum was plundered during the invasion of the US in 2003. Thousands of objects were stolen and many have still not been recovered. Rakowitz decided to reconstruct the stolen objects using Arabian newspapers and packaging material of products from the Middle East. The material brings the objects into our own time and adds a new chapter to the story.

The title of the work refers to the road through the famous Ishtar Gate, one of the city gates of ancient Babylon. The gate was transported to Berlin in the last century and is now in the Pergamon Museum. The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist is about history and identity and the threat to these in times of war and occupation. It makes us think about the importance of collecting, and about the museum as a place for the collective memory where important objects are kept and interpreted.

The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist is part of the exhibition about the collection Once Upon a Time... The Collection Now and can be seen in the project room on the second floor of the new building. Alternating presentations relating to the collection can be seen in this room.

Minimal Resistance - de eerste Uses of Art tentoonstelling door L’Internatinoale

Op 15 oktober 2013 opende de tentoonstelling Minimal Resistance, Between late modernism and globalization: artistic practices during the 80s and 90s in Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid haar deuren. Dit is de eerste tentoonstelling in het kader van het nieuwe programma The Uses of Art - on the legacy of 1848 and 1989 van de museumconfederatie L’Internationale. We hebben het Museum Reina Sofía gevraagd waarom het werk van René Daniëls, een bruikleen van het Van Abbemuseum, zo geschikt is voor deze tentoonstelling. Ze stuurden ons de volgende reactie: “René Daniëls kan niet worden omschreven als een vertegenwoordiger van een duidelijk herkenbare stroming of als iemand die model staat voor een bepaalde periode. Dit gebrek aan verwantschap is geen obstakel, maar maakt hem juist het perfecte onderwerp voor de tentoonstelling Minimal resistance, die gaat over Europese en internationale kunst uit de jaren ’80 en ’90.

Met zijn werk Painting on the Bullfight zinspeelt hij op een ambivalente houding tegenover artistieke activiteit, die tegelijkertijd zelfbewust en provocatief is. Deze houding zien we ook bij andere, zeer uiteenlopende kunstenaars en tijdgenoten, zoals Franz West, Guy de Cointet, Martin Kippenberger en Mike Kelley, die ook in de tentoonstelling te zien zijn. In hen allen zijn de aporieën van de laat-moderne kunst aanwezig, waarbij de uitingsvorm afhangt van hun individuele drijfveren en betrokkenheid bij een bepaald medium: schilderkunst, sculptuur, muziek, performance of dans. Op hen allen lijkt echter het motto van Kippenberger van toepassing: “Gute Rückentwicklung kennt keine Ausreden” (Goede regressie heeft geen uitvluchten nodig), een van de rode draden door deze tentoonstelling.”

On October 15, 2013 the exhibition “Minimal Resistance, Between late modernism and globalization: artistic practices during the 80s and 90s’ opened in Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid. It is the first exhibition within the framework of the new program of the museum confederation L’Internationale with the title The Uses of Art - on the legacy of 1848 and 1989.

We asked Museum Reina Sofia why the work of René Daniëls, a loan from the Van Abbemuseum collection, is so fitting to this exhibition. They wrote us the following response: “René Daniëls cannot be described as representative of a clearly recognisable trend or as an illustration of a period. This absence of filiation, far from being an obstacle, makes him the perfect subject of the exhibition “Minimal resistance,” which looks at European and international art from the 80s and 90s.

His work Painting on the Bullfight alludes to an ambivalent attitude toward artistic activity, at once self-conscious and provocative, that we see in other artists who are his contemporaries and yet are as different as Franz West, Guy de Cointet, Martin Kippenberger and Mike Kelley, who are fellow travellers in the exhibition space at Reina Sofia.

All of them inhabit the aporias of art in late modernity, depending on their own individual impulses and their involvement with a particular medium: painting, sculpture, music, performance or dance. All seem to share, however, Kippenberger’s motto that “A Good Regression Needs No Excuses,” one of the leitmotivs that weave together in the exhibition.”

Hoe kan kunst als een instrument van maatschappelijke reactie fungeren? Wat kan in concrete situaties de collectieve overtuiging in beweging brengen? Kan kunst nieuwe methoden voorstellen om onze maatschappij te ontwikkelen?

Kan kunst worden gezien als een instrument van creatieve overtuiging?

In het kader van het Museum of Arte Útil vindt in de bibliotheek een tentoonstelling plaats die verschillende burgerbewegingen, alternatieve periodes en kunstenaarsgroepen uit Eindhoven tijdens de jaren ’60, ’70 en’80 in verband brengt met een aantal voorbeelden uit het Arte Útil-archief en zijn internationale documentatie van creatief verzet tegen maatschappelijke -, politieke - en machtsstructuren in deze decennia. De tentoonstelling laat zien hoe kunst werd gebruikt als instrument voor sociale observatie, als kritische praktijk, maar ook als mechanisme voor transformatie dat de aanzet gaf tot mogelijke strategieën voor de toekomst. In de bibliotheek zullen voorbeelden worden getoond van alternatieve vormen van collectief werk, experimentele vormen van samenleven, protestuitingen, gemeenschappelijk eigendom, verzetsdaden door middel van interactie en aanschoppen tegen het gezag... Kunstprojecten uit Noord-Amerika, Europa en Latijns-Amerika zullen de ruimte delen met bewegingen uit Eindhoven zoals Het Karregat, ’t Hool, Apollohuis en Zesde Kolonne. Tijdens de tentoonstelling vindt er een programma plaats met discussies en filmvoorstellingen waarin worden gereflecteerd op de relatie tussen Eindhoven en Arte Útil, het verleden en het heden.

How could art function as an instrument of social reaction? What moves collective determination in concrete situations?

Could art propose new ways to develop our society? Could art be considered as a tool of creative determination?

In relation with the Museum of Arte Útil, the library will propose an exhibition that connects various citizens movements, alternative episodes and artists groups from Eindhoven during the 60´s, 70´s and 80´s with some examples from the Arte Útil archive and its international record of creative resistance against power and socio-political systems of control during these decades. This exhibition will show how art has been used as a tool for social observation and critical practice as well as a mechanism for transformation activating possible strategies for the future. The library will host examples of alternative forms of collective work, experimental ways of coexistence, apparatus of protest, communal property, acts of resistance through interaction and irreverence... Art projects from North America, Europe and Latin America will share space with movements in Eindhoven like Het Karregat, ‘t Hool, Apollohuis, and Zesde Kolonne. This exhibition will propose a public programme of discussions and screenings reflecting about the relation between Eindhoven and Arte Útil, the past and the present.
