NACCS TEJAS FOCO 2024
“50 Years: The Legacy of NACCS and its Changing Landscape, 1974-2024”
WELCOME TO NACCS TEJAS 2024!
As organizers of NACCS Tejas 2024, we welcome you to Our Lady of the Lake University, situated on the Westside of San Antonio. This conference is a celebration and a critical overview of the last 50 years of annual meetings of the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies. From a time where Chicanx and Latinx Studies Programs were in their infancy, to the struggles of political action in the streets, this Golden Jubilee marks the endurance and resilience of a community that said ¡Ya Basta! to inequality and inequity. 2024 also marks the 40th anniversary of NACCS – Tejas Foco, where community leaders created a regional brazo to specifically address the experiences of the Tejano/a/x population in Texas. During this current moment where we face new challenges with the passage of several bills in Texas and around the U.S. designed to curb our success in building programs and getting our histories into schools, we take this momentous occasion to honor the shoulders we stand on and look forward into ways we can sustain our movement.
As you proceed with the following scheduled and unscheduled events over the next few days, take time to bask in our victories, reflect on our struggles, and kindle the fire for revolution nuestra gente.
In solidarity,
Valerie A. Martínez, Ph.D. and Christopher Carmona, Ph.D.

NACCS TEJAS FOCO 2024
LAND ACKNOWLEDMENT & SOLIDARITY STATEMENT
Together, we gather on the traditional lands of Indigenous people, past, present, and future. We honor the original stewards of this land and those who continue to work towards its survival amidst settler-colonial notions of progress and advancement. Let us learn from them. Specifically:
“We acknowledge the Payaya – the people of Yanawana and the Tap Pilam Cuahuiltecans who are native to the south Texas and Northeast Mexico region, who live in the occupied territory known as San Antonio. We also acknowledge the Carrizo/Comecrudo Nation, whose traditional territory we are living on… We also acknowledge the Lipan Apaches, Tonkawa, Kickapoo, Comanches, and other Native nations who were displaced from their territories and migrated to theselands – who continue to care for Mother Earth and maintain their traditional ways. As an institution built on Coahuiltecanland, it is important that we acknowledge that we are working, teaching and learning on theselands and consider what responsibilities we carry and how we can engage inmeaningful commitments of reciprocity tolandand water, and the communities that continue to organize in defense of Mother Earth.” (Ethnic Studies Educator’s Academy)
Let us be mindful of the damaging ongoing effects of colonialism and works towards building a greater understanding of this legacy. Lastly, as we honor the land, the water, the skies, and all living creatures we live amongst, we honor our ancestors-their strength, their resiliency, their survivance, and their passing. Please take time to name aloud or silently reflect upon their names, their actions, their memories.
As descendants of the Indigenous people of the Americas, we have called for a confrontation/resistance to colonial indoctrination and the legacy of racism, colorism and discrimination within our own Chicanx/Latinx communities. We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and with all those committed to dismantling oppressive policies and institutions/entities. Let us continue to engage in decolonial, antiracist, feminist discourse in community with one another.

6:15-7:30 – Keynote Session
“Borderlands Ballads (Corridos) and Shakespeare: Resistance and Affirmation,” Dr. María Herrera-Sobek (Auditorium)
One of the creative gifts of the Borderlands is the musical tradition known as the corrido, or Mexican ballad. While it may seem incongruous to link the corrido with Shakespeare, this presentation will explore the many similarities found between the enormous number of corridos from the mid 1800s to the present and Shakespeare’s equally gigantic literary output. Shakespeare’s genius in writing his magnificent theatrical dramas and the genius of the Mexican and Chicana/o community in ballad production share qualities of resistance and affirmation. As examples of the Shakespeare–corrido connection, the talk will examine “Corrido de Hamlet,” “Corrido de Romeo y Julieta,” and “Corrido de Ramón y Julieta.”
