40th Anniversary Reunion And Conference
Our Lady of the Lake University San Antonio, Texas
September 13th-14th, 2024
For our 40th Anniversary Reunion & Conference, Hispanas Unidas proudly commissioned artist Victoria Leal to create the stunning illustration that graces our program cover. This beautiful piece, titled “Como Una Flor, ” captures the essence of what it means to be Latina.
Like flowers, Latinas are vibrant, resilient, and wonderfully diverse. Each one blooms in her own unique way, adding color and life to the world around her. Just as flowers thrive in different environments, Latinas rise and flourish across various fields, embracing challenges and seizing opportunities. Together, we create a rich, diverse garden that celebrates our strength, culture, and unity.
VICTORIA LEAL is a rising artist from San Antonio, Texas, with a passion for both 2D and 3D mediums. She enjoys experimenting with multiple media to push the boundaries of her artistic concepts. Victoria's work has been featured in several exhibitions, including the SAY Sí WE ARE NOW 2022, Dock Space Gallery’s Red and Blue Self Portraits in 2023, the Santikos Gallery's UTSA-PaCE Teen Studio Intensive Program's End of the Year Exhibition in 2023, Esperanza's Love Sin Fronteras Vigil, the 34th Annual San Antonio Women's March in 2024, and the Naturalization Station’s exhibition at Sala Diaz in 2024.
Victoria has also actively contributed to community murals, such as the Community Paint Day at Centro de Artes Gallery for Sandra Gonzalez, and SACA's 63rd community mural with Diana Rocha and Raisa Melendez. She was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for dedicating extended volunteer hours to murals on the Westside and is currently working as a teen muralist on projects like the "MLK Banner 2024" and "Rompe Las Fronteras." Victoria is deeply committed to the arts community and plans to continue her artistic journey at UTSA, where she aims to further develop her career in art.
The new Hispanas Unidas logo beautifully embodies the spirit of our community. The vibrant colors represent the rich diversity among us, celebrating the unique backgrounds and perspectives that each of us brings. The interlocking shapes symbolize the strength we find in supporting one another, illustrating how we uplift and empower each other. The circular design signifies our commitment to collaboration and leadership, showing that we come together to create change. From a distance, the logo resembles a flower, a powerful reminder of our collective growth and blossoming as a united force.

¡Bienvenidas! I welcome you to the Hispanas Unidas 40th Anniversary Reunion and Conference with the words of San Antonio social justice leader Emma Teneyuca, who made history as a young woman in the 1930s:
“I just have a feeling, a very strong feeling, that if ever this world is civilized, that it would be more the work of women. ”
To Emma, a civilized world was a just world. She saw women doing that work. Emma had seen the devastation of pecan sheller families caused by unfair labor practices. She and her people organized against the industry and won. Many of the workers were women, some very young. Today, we see serious challenges all around us, whether within our families and communities or in our natural environment. Hispanas Unidas invites you to use this conference to reflect, learn, and then act for justice, following Emma’s example. The start is always selfimprovement. After that, how justice is sought is as varied as the work women do and as unique as each one of us. Hispanas Unidas is about women helping women.
We hosted Emma at our first conference 40 years ago. We received her support and her blessing. At that time, we also brought our mothers, aunts, other relatives, and friends. Some are no longer with us. Today, I bring all these women to mind and remember what they gave us. Their work, su trabajo cotidiano, and their wishes for us are still present. We stand on their shoulders.
Since that first conference, Latinas have come a long way despite many roadblocks. This program, the presenters, the planners, and all who will participate are a manifestation of the talent among Latinas in San Antonio and beyond. This makes it imperative that we help each other so that all our women reach their goals. This is why Hispanas Unidas conferences are diverse and inclusive of all Latinas.
I extend deep appreciation to the Honorable Rosie Castro and Co-Directors Susana Lopez Krulevitch, Alejandra Villarreal, and Jane Velasquez, and their entire Planning Committee for their very hard work to make this event a reality.
On behalf of the entire Hispanas Unidas team, we thank Dr. Abel Chavez, President of OLLU, the faculty and staff who have helped us offer this gift to our community. We thank Sr. Rose Krupa and the Congregation of Divine Providence for their assistance. Thank you to our sponsors and all donors for their generosity.
My hope for this conference is that you will benefit from the environment that has been created for you, that you make new friends, and that you be inspired to go forward with your life with new energy and bold plans for your future.
¡Adelante, Mujer!
María Antonietta Berriozábal Founder, Hispanas Unidas
We nning the Hispanas Unidas Conference of 1984 and who are no longer with us. We honor their memories with gratitude. Their legacy lives on in their families and as we harvest the seeds they planted as Latina leaders in our city and beyond.

Nuestra Gente: A Tribute to Hispanic Innovators and Dreamers™ is a visual representation of storytelling, the collection highlights the global contributions and history of the Latino/a/x community, applying a multicultural and multigenerational approach to cultivating identity and cultural literacy through authentic narratives. Dressed as iconic figures of yesterday and today, children portray the individuals whose stories shaped and influenced the history and culture of society, bridging generations of trailblazers to the leaders of tomorrow.
The Raising Our Voice exhibition celebrates the voices of the past and present exploring stories, identity, culture, and experiences within our community. Led by Maestra Sharriah Martinez, this collection features works by students from the Young Women’s Leadership Academy. Proceeds from the Raising Our Voice collection will benefit student trips to art schools.
In remembrance of the women in service to our community, we honor their stories and contributions with the Hispanas Unidas Ofrenda. Curated by the students of YWLA and artist Bernadette Peña.
