Art Walk

There’s No Such Thing January’s Art Walk By Mark Stouffer As A Lucky John

By Morse Cleaver expected to drink amongst the scum of the earth like myself when I stepped into Lucky John’s this Wednesday night. The result was disappointing, but the bartender said that it’s usually got a bigger crowd any other day of the week. The night before was when the dart league shows up to get drunk and assault each other with projectiles after a few pitchers of PBR has passed through their system. They come to the realization that they wasted their fifty cents on bathroom condoms and horny goat weed, and that the safer purchase would have been the erotic pictures offered in the men’s room vending machine.

For a dive you could expect to be offered much less in basic amenities. They have eleven TV’s, three pool tables, four dart boards, Golden Tee, a jukebox, an ATM, Kino, a full bar, and ten beers on tap. On top of that they even have crappy oven pizzas, and hot dogs ($8/$2.50).

he Hibbleton gallery is settling nicely into their new location on Santa Fe by the Violet Hour and the current exhibit reflects that, literally. I checked out their “Non Sequitur” and P.A.S.’s “Light”. The layout of the new art spaces means that the way you arrive at the exhibit is meaningful. I chose to enter through the art school next door and was politely redirected by a bunch of surprised ladies who seemed to be learning origami.

Then I entered through Violet Hour who was having a local band of two talented girls Mandie & Ruby (listn.to/mandieandruby) play wonderful guitar and melodica music. They both

sang beautifully and even did a Emiliana Torrini song which I like. The Violet Hour space is still under-rated.

The “Non Sequitur” is a collection of 6 artists that despite it’s name seem to have a theme. I think it was 3D. There were 3D glasses on the podiums to view some of the art and other pieces had red and blue vision lines. “Light” as P.A.S. (www.2pas.org) had a variety of light displays. Beams of many colors seemed to float around the room and reflect of other displays and mirror balls. It was very multi-media, in the art sense of the word, with video displays, projection and mirrors. It runs until the end of the month.

By Mark Stouffer In the year 2011, Fullertonians will have plenty of new toys and gadgets to tinker around with. Everything is in 3D, refrigerators allow housewives to twitter their favorite TV Chef personalities right in the kitchen, and soft robots will eventually replace hospice orderlies in their duties of wiping old people’s butts. The future looks amazing. Cameras and televisions are all heading in the direction of developing 3D systems. Personal camcorders from JVC, Canon, and Panasonic, are now being featured with chips that convert 2D images to 3D, or they’re recording with two separate lenses to do the same thing authentically. Kodak is developing printers that create images of the same nature. One product by Canon is the size of a smart phone, yet it records images in 3D. The downside to this ‘new’ technology is that users have to wear these bulky, auto-shutter glasses to see things without the 3D blur. Granted that these new gadgets provide viewers with a new sense of field depth, they still won’t become that popular till it works without having to find your glasses just to enjoy a movie in your home theater. There was one TV however from a company called 3DG that did not require any glasses. Computers are going to be changing into a whole different beast within the next couple of years. Intel is doing some crazy work with their processors that now avoid the requirement for a separate graphics card on your computer altogether. It’s a blessing for avid gamers. They are beginning to place theft protection devices that will lock users out if a laptop is reported stolen. Even if those users don’t login to the internet, settings can be configured to lockout whoever uses it without logging in online within 5-7 days.

hai Basil is a popular Thai food restaurant at State College and Chapman. We came for lunch on Monday and the place was poppin’. Thai food is one of my favorites and I was not disappointed. Our waiter was prompt and courteous bringing our drinks quickly and taking our order. On Mondays they have the potato vegetable soup which was tasty with fresh vegetables and herbs. The three of us got lunch specials and mine was the angry beef. Boy was it angry! I ordered it medium hotness but I couldn’t really imagine it hotter. It was a little hotter than Del Scorcho level but not up to the Del Inferno level (on the Del Taco scale of hotness) but still retained all of the flavor unlike that bland tasteless fire known as Del Inferno. Almost hiccup making. It was a little small but we all shared so I barely noticed. Andrew got the Pad See Yew which I think I could live off of. Maybe it’s the light peanut or sesame oil they use in Thai food but it makes me feel healthy. The pork was tender and tasty and really mixed well with the Chinese Broccoli and rice. Mitch’s yellow curry chicken was also great. The chicken slivers were just the right thickness and the sauce was fresh and delicious. Our lunch plates were $6-$7. Fu llertoni a n Hibbleton Presents

Backside

I

f your itching to find out what’s up in the art world next month, Hibbleton has already announced their plans for February. A new show each month keeps the audiences riveted. Hibbleton Gallery announces “I Left My Heart in Detroit”, featuring an all-Detroit lineup of artists: Niagara Detroit, William Zdan, Matt Gordon and SLAW. The opening reception is Friday, February 4, 2011 from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm during the Downtown Fullerton Art Walk, and is free. Lowbrow icon Niagara has a rich history in the Detroit art and music scene. She was front woman of the proto punk band Destroy all Monsters featuring former members of the Stooges. Her rugged, female-power art has been featured in galleries around the world, including Sydney, Tokyo and London. Detroit expatriate and Southern California resident William Zdan has shown in galleries in and around Los Angeles and Orange County. His work mixes political and religious satire with a classical, trained style to create stirring and provocative works of beauty and contemplation. Matt Gordon’s work has been featured in Juxtapoz Magazine, on album covers (including Modest Mouse), and in RVCA designs. His works collects a Bosch-like assembly of modern-day characters for a surreal (and often comical) experience. The art of SLAW re-creates a Motor City landscape decorated with hep cats, muscle cars, and seedy lounges. His “shaken-not-stirred” approach perfectly complements this cocktail of accomplished artists. Curated by William Zdan. “I Left My Heart in Detroit” will show through February 26th, 2011.

75% Home Value Decline in 3 Years?

By Cristal Drake hankfully I am not talking about Fullerton or Even Orange County for that matter but one city in California led the nation in loss of value. What a terrible thing to be number one in!

T

According to a recent Los Angeles Times article, California has been hit especially hard, leading the nation in loss of home value. Number One was Stockton with a 75% loss…wow! In the greater Orange County area, we have seen a decrease in home values of 36% in the past three years. This got me thinking about Fullerton in particular. How much have the values declined in the past three years? I pulled a few sources and according to Trend Graphics, utilizing the sold price per square foot, Fullerton Homes have experienced a 21.5% decrease in the past three years. Some say we have hit the bottom; others say we have a few more years of this. My prediction? Well for 2011, I really think we will see more of the same as 2010; a little flat.

But, let’s end this on a high note; be thankful that you don’t live in Stockton!
