Fullerton Elections Is It Business As Usual?

Written by Alex Stouffer

enior lecturer and director of undergraduate studies at Harvard University, Jeffrey A. Miron, made good arguments on Prop 19 in an article posted on CNN.com. While liberals were claiming overblown reasons for legalization like bringing revenue to the state budget and decreasing the presence of cartels in US National Forests, they ignored conservative issues about how far the bill reaches.

his reminds me of the ‘92 elections. The economy was in shambles. The nation had experienced a sudden downturn, had to bail out the Savings & Loan industry, and unemployment was high. A third party was focusing debate on trade freedom, and the proper role of government, and it was all because of a man named George Bush.

For instance, the complication that state law could be surpassed by federal law would keep marijuana on the black market and hinder the collection of tax revenue. The collection of reasons made opponents in this election think that claims stemmed more from self interest than genuine concern. The bill itself didn’t appeal to employers as well according to Miron: “One feature attempted to protect the “rights” of employees who get fired or disciplined for using marijuana, including a provision that employers could only discipline marijuana use that “actually impairs job performance.” That is a much higher bar than required by current policy”. “Prop 19 did not need to address employee marijuana-testing in the first place”…

But the political wave that has washed over the country did not cause a ripple in Fullerton. Whether for better or worse, Fullertonians had incumbent fever. The winners of the four year seat are both inside-the-beltway, city employees. Don Bankhead is sitting councilmember and Mayor, and Doug Chaffee is a vice-chair of the Planning Commission. Fullerton seems to be unaffected by the general discontent leading to Tuesday’s throw-thebastards-out referendum that we watched from afar on the nightly news. In Fullerton, it’s business as usual. The third councilmember elected on Tuesday may make some waves, however. At least he is not currently employed by the city. He has, at least once, rung the claxon, warning about about wasteful government finance. Maybe some of that wave of political energy that swept the nation did cause a ripple in Fullerton. ullerton local and California Army National Guardsman Specialist Timothy Ryan; an Infantry soldier with the 1/172 Cavalry Squadron, 86th Infantry Mountain Brigade has been deployed since December 2009 to Bagram Airfield in the Parwan Province, Afghanistan. A Veteran of two prior deployments to Iraq SPC Timothy Ryan has seen first hand the progress coalition forces are making in the middle east. “I get the most satisfaction out of my job, seeing the smiles on the kids faces.” Of course its not always easy. As a Personal Security, and Weapons Specialist he is responsible for security during Key Leader Engagements of high ranking army officials meeting with local political figures and Afghan security forces. “I wish the people back home could see the big picture”, he says. “ These kids are constantly asking me for pens and school supplies, They just want a fair shot at life like the kids back home.” SPC Ryan says he tries to do what he can as a grunt even spending his own money to help them; to include books, pens, paper and lots of candy. Ryan was recently surprised to see a reminder of Fullerton slung over the shoulder of a young boy. “I couldn’t believe my eyes”, he said. “I was on mission one afternoon and saw a kid walking down the road with a Cal State Fullerton Backpack. When I first called the boy over he was a little shy, I had to show him I meant no harm and that I was Interested in his pack. I told my buddy SPC Espinosa to get a photo of me and the boy. Espi did and then the kid was all smiles after that. He told me his name was Haroom, asked me for a pen, which I gave him out of my sleeve, and some M&M’s from my MRE (meal ready to eat)” “I was so happy to see that bag” SPC Ryan says. “Somebody had to donate it to our cause over here. I think were doing the right thing here.”

SPC Ryan says he misses his family, friends, and his local watering hole the Back Alley on Wilshire Blvd. in Downtown. He is wrapping up his current tour but has decided to stay another year. I asked why he wanted to stay knowing the danger of his job, he humbly replied with, “I feel part of something bigger than myself here, and these kids are worth it.”

Fratti Gelato

Written by Mark Stouffer

I

n 1565 architect and military engineer Bernardo Buontalenti brought gelato to the court of the Medici in Florence, Italy. 440 years later brothers-in-law Anthony LuPriore and Ron DeLay brought it the rest of the way to Fullerton and it hasn’t lost anything in transit. The brothers studied gelato making in Italy and had the machine shipped from there to their little gelateria on Commonwealth next to Roscoe’s Deli. Gelato has 1/3 as much fat as ice cream and no air whipped in so it is dense and creamy. But we wanted to find out if their meals were as good as their dessert, so I tried some of their Prosciutto di Parma. This is a newly deregulated delicacy. Long ago the art of curing meats in brine was perfected in the northern region of Italy and today it is known as some of the finest ham you can buy. It’s nothing like ham. It is a unique taste that you are sure to remember, much more creamy, rich, and salty. This is the result of the eight month curing process. Frati’s is excellent.

ibbleton Gallery presents “Drift” featuring photographic works by Randy Martin and Marlon Geller. The opening reception is Friday, November 5, from 6-11 p.m., during the Downtown Fullerton Art Walk, a free multi-venue art experience. The reception is free and open to the public, with vegan food provided by Orange County People for Animals. Martin and Geller’s work captures life and landscapes both internationally and across the United States, revealing what is evocative and dreamlike in the familiar and ordinary. Both artists are inspired by the spontaneity and adventure of travel, and attempt to preserve those sensibilities within each photograph. The mundane emerges as exquisite, vast, mysterious and sometimes alienating, leaving the viewer to make up his own story, or longing to step into the frame themself. As shorelines move, clouds reshape, mists descend, and subjects’ perspectives shift, the viewer is left to drift from the wide landscape to the private moment, in ways familiar and unexpected. The show runs through November 28th. Hibbleton Gallery has recently moved to a new (and larger) space at 223 W. Santa Fe. Fullerton, CA 92832.
