A Waltz through Vienna AT RIGHT: The stately Schonbrunn Palace is just one of the many cultural highlights you'll discover in Europe's "City of Palaces"—Vienna, Austria.

Crossroads of Culture The Austrian satirist Karl Kraus said, "The streets of Vienna are paved with culture, the streets of other cities with asphalt." A stroll around its famous Ringstrasse, Vienna's circular central boulevard, proves that this is not far from the truth. Flanked by lavish palaces, the Parliament and City Hall, the Academy of Fine Arts, State Opera House, University of Vienna, and more, this is Europe's most civilized and culture-rich roadway.

Sights & Sounds Abound An ideal place to start is the Stephansdom, Vienna's landmark Gothic cathedral. You can climb to the top of the Alt Steffl (south spire) or take the elevator to the observation platform. Either way, you'll be rewarded with a fantastic aerial view of the Innere Stadt (inner city) surrounded by the Ringstrasse. Once you're inside, the cathedral contains such treasures as the Habsburg crypt, filigreed Pilgrim pulpit, and Potscher Madonna—a statue whose eyes reputedly wept real tears during a battle against the Turks in 1697. While St. Stephen's is the city's preeminent church, the Karlskirche is worth seeing for its robin's-egg blue dome and lovely gardens.

No architecture or gardens compare, however, to those of Vienna's imperial Schonbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking among the manicured flowerbeds and wooded paths in the shadow of its palatial grandeur, you'll understand why the Viennese are often accused of extravagance. You'll marvel at bowers of roses, rows of perfectly shaped yews, beds of flaming red geraniums, classical statues, fountains, and even the world's oldest working zoo—the Tiergarten, founded in 1752.

For an opera experience like no other, visit Vienna's Staatsoper (State Opera House)—where many renowned conductors, including Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss, led orchestras.

Tickets are more affordable than you might think, but even if you don't attend a performance, be sure to see the spectacular Italianate Renaissance building in which it's housed. Even Vienna's horses are more refined than most—as you'll find at its famous Spanish Riding School—a crystal-chandeliered arena where snow-white Lipizzaner stallions in feathered headdresses prance and sway as waltz music plays.

Tour for the Tastebuds A day of sightseeing or night at the opera would not be complete without a nightcap at one of Vienna's famous cafes. Just behind the Opera is the Hotel Sacher, originator of the silken chocolate sachertorte. Try apfelstrudel at the Café Central—a favorite of Trotsky—or Sigmund Freud's beloved guglhupf (fluted spongecake) at the posh Landtmann. Of course, you can accompany any of these with rich cream-laden Viennese coffee. And if you don't have a sweet tooth, there are always the wienkellers (wine cellars), where you might try crisp Gruner

Chinese Goreng (fried noodles) with Chicken, Prawns or Pork

With regional variations found in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, this popular Asian noodle dish is both simple to prepare and ideal for either lunch or dinner. And best of all, its non-noodle ingredients—meat, vegetables, and spices—can be selected to suit individual tastes and seasonal availability.

Ingredients Chicken (shredded), prawns or pork (Approximately 8 ounces) 1-2 handfuls of Chinese egg noodles 1/2 red pepper (chili or red variety, depending on taste) 1 handful bok choy (may substitute with bean sprouts) 1 onion, finely chopped Add other vegetables to taste: carrot, cucumber, pea pods, leek 1 tsp each of spices: cinnamon, pepper, salt, anise, fennel, clove (add others to taste) 1 garlic clove 1 tsp dark soy sauce 1 tbs light soy sauce 1 tbs hot chili sauce 1 tsp sesame oil 2 tbs vegetable oil 1 tsp corn starch Preparation 1. Put shredded chicken, prawns or pork into a bowl. Add spices, 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce, and 1 tablespoon hot chili sauce (if desired). Mix up, marinate for 5 minutes, and add corn starch. Mix again thoroughly.

2. Cook egg noodles in boiling water for 3 minutes (or per instructions). Mix with cold water, drain, and add 1 teaspoon of sesame oil to eliminate sticking.

3. Thinly slice all vegetables.

Directions 1. Heat vegetable oil in a large wok until it smokes. Add meat/spice mixture and stir slowly until meat is browned.

2. Add all vegetables, followed by noodles. Stir thoroughly. Add light soy sauce and 1 tsp of sesame oil.

If desired, top with fried onion, and serve with a fried egg and sliced tomatoes.
