PRESIDENT/CEO UPDATE

Valley Senior Living opened in 1924 to care for 40 residents in our community. Today we have grown to provide care and services for over 530 people each day at our three locations in Grand Forks. During that time, our staff has grown to about 840 people today.

While the last few years have been incredibly challenging for long term care, we have been successful in improving our staffing throughout 2023.

Increased wages combined with fewer pandemic restrictions have made our profession more desirable again. We are proud that we have averaged a four percent vacancy rate for our open nursing positions this year. Most remarkably, we are celebrating 20 years of not using a nursing staffing agency at Valley!

Each day we are given the opportunity to succeed due to the system we have for reimbursing long term care in North Dakota. I want to express our gratitude to our local North Dakota Legislators for recognizing the staffing crisis in long term care and authorizing the necessary increases to address it in the 2023 legislative session.

FROM THE CHAPLAIN’S DESK Dear Valley Friends, I would like to take a moment to remember a very dear friend of Valley, a colleague, and a pastor of one of our corporate congregations who died suddenly on Thursday, October 5, 2023. Hopes, Dreams, and Bucket Lists

Now I ask you to imagine if you were preparing to move into Valley Senior Living, think about what things you might have to give up. This is a question that our residents and their families have wrestled with after they made the decision to make a neighborhood at a Valley community their new home.

What about something called a “Bucket List”? When residents move in at Valley, I wonder how many of them think that might be the end of their Bucket List days. It doesn’t have to be. The Valley Senior Living Foundation funds wishes and the outstanding care partners coordinate a program called Community Connections that allows for residents to participate in some very neat experiences. We recently had a group of veterans tour the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Another group went on a tour of Rydell’s Toy Shop. I was disappointed they didn’t ask me to go as a chaperone, maybe next time.

Residents attended the annual Oktoberfest at the Alerus Center while another resident attended the game. We are also open to taking residents to their local churches for worship and arranging for assistance to attend weddings, funerals, or other family events.

We are happy to be back to welcoming the community into our homes. We are currently looking for volunteer groups to join us for special events during the holidays and have opportunities for volunteers to assist with holiday parties or to adopt residents and purchase a gift for them to make this holiday season special.

I believe that God made us for a purpose and as a Christian care community, we are here to help residents understand they are never too old to have hopes, dreams, and even Bucket Lists. We ask for your help to make them come true.

May the peace of God which is beyond our understanding keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Greg V. Hanson Scholarship Greg V. Hanson served as the president and CEO at Valley Senior Living and passed away unexpectedly in 2013. Greg held a passion for making nurse education and training a reality for those interested in furthering their education or starting on a nursing career path.

Through special event fundraising and employee giving, the Valley Senior Living Foundation selects recipients of the Greg V. Hanson Scholarships. Desta Wilke, CNA on the Oakcrest neighborhood at Woodside Village is the most recent recipient.

Myra Courtyard Dedication Tuesday, August 22, 2023 the courtyard at Tufte Manor was formally dedicated in honor of the Myra Foundation. The residents of Tufte Manor, together with administration and care partners, joined John Botsford from the Myra Foundation to unveil and dedicate the redesigned and upgraded patio area on the west side of the care community.

With new landscaping, concrete, and patio furniture, this area will host great conversation, serve as a space for relaxation, and fill hearts and souls with the nature surrounding all of us.

Flowers will be watered and smores will be toasted with a deep appreciation for the generous gifts of the Myra Foundation and their investment in our community.

A resident from Valley Senior Living on Columbia initiated and advocated for an increase in the Medicaid Personal Needs Allowance.

As a result, the ND Legislature increased the Personal Needs Allowance by

$35 per month for nursing home and basic care residents.

18th Annual Valley Senior Living Classic Tournament Valley Senior Living Foundation, along with tournament chairmen Greg Mattson and Brian Harris of Century Electric, extend a tremendous thank you to all participants, sponsors, and volunteers who took part in the 18th Annual Valley Senior Living Classic Tournament on July 20, 2023 at King’s Walk Golf Course. Your support of this tournament helped raise nearly $66,000 for the Chaplaincy Ministry Program and the Greg V. Hanson Scholarship Fund.

Stirring up smiles and memories A group of residents from Woodside Village headed down Highway 2 to the Grand Forks Air Force base this summer to enjoy a day of reminiscing. For these Veterans, seeing the way things are today and the changes that have happened over the years filled their hearts with patriotic pride.

Performing at the Market A life of entertaining. Gifted to entertain others. Dorothea Halverson can often be heard sharing her gift of musical talent. This summer, accompanied by Valley Senior Living music therapist Lindsey Moffitt, Dorothea traveled out of town to an outdoor market and performed one of her favorite songs, “The Rose”. Standing in front of the crowd of shoppers enjoying a beautiful summer evening, Dorothea was the star shining and twinkling the brightest just before the sun set and a dark summer sky filled the prairie.
