a message from the president
September at the Valley Hunt Club marks a time of homecoming. Our club is abuzz with renewed energy as our families transition from summer vacations back to the familiar rhythms of school and work. This month, we look forward to relaunching our swim and tennis programs and welcoming familiar and new faces to these much-loved activities.
A highlight for our family is the annual Lobster Clam Bake on September 15. This event is a personal favorite of mine, featuring delicious food, great company, and the spirited camaraderie of our community. I am eager to see many of you there, enjoying our club's festivities and beautiful setting.
The theme of homecoming extends as we welcome new legacy members to our fold. Last year, we were thrilled to integrate ten legacy members, and this year, we are equally excited to have seven more either elected or in the process of joining. These memberships are crucial in fostering and maintaining the multigenerational relationships that are a hallmark of our club. If you have children or grandchildren between the ages of 28 and 34 who are interested in joining the Valley Hunt Club, please reach out to Janet Lie for information on how to propose them for membership. My wife, Mary, and I are looking forward to proposing our children, Beatrice in 2040 and Charlie in 2042, as they become part of this enduring tradition.
On the development front, we recently shared an exciting update about the future of our club. Will Shepphird and Craig Smith have been chosen as the
architect and interior design team to lead the refresh of our club's master plan. This initiative, outlined in our 2024 Strategic Plan, represents a significant step forward in enhancing our facilities and services to better meet the evolving needs of our members. Member input is crucial to this process, and we are organizing focus groups for the fall to gather your insights and perspectives. Stay tuned for more details on how you can contribute to shaping the future of The Valley Hunt Club.
As we move into this bustling month, I am inspired by the enthusiasm and engagement of our community. Whether through our returning programs, special events like the Lobster Clam Bake, or strategic initiatives to enhance our club's offerings, there is much to anticipate. I look forward to seeing you around the club, participating in our activities, and continuing to build our vibrant community.
Here's to a great September filled with reconnections and new beginnings at The Valley Hunt Club.

As the summer season ends, I want to reflect on the many memorable moments we have shared here at VHC. The laughter of children playing on the tennis courts, the smell of wood oven pizza, and the cheers of our swim team have all made this summer one to remember. Our community continues to thrive with the launch of the family restrooms, the nursing room, and the new Kid's Club, all of which have been warmly received by our members. I am also pleased to announce that the long-awaited Roster has been updated and mailed to all members. I know this tradition is importance to VHC, and I am sure everyone was excited to see it return.
We revamped Poolside dining this summer, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Members asked for more casual options, so we are happy to announce that we will keep Poolside dining and the bar open on weekends after Labor Day. Please check out the menu if you have not dined with us yet. We have noticed that most members enjoy using it in the evening, so we have staffed it on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:30 to 8:00 PM. Additionally, our lifeguards will remain on duty throughout September. A survey will be sent shortly to gather your thoughts and feedback on your Poolside experience.
We had record attendance at our 4th of July celebration, and our first-ever Cardboard Boat Race was such a hit that it is sure to become an annual tradition! We have also been busy behind the scenes preparing for some exciting updates.
Cameron’s enthusiasm for the upgrades at the Sports Center shines through in his article, and I know you will share our excitement as well. The improvements result from extensive research and careful planning to enhance your health and fitness experience here at VHC. We are thrilled to invite you to join us on Saturday, September 14, to unveil our new fitness equipment. This upgrade includes
additional Woodway treadmills and expanded Life Fitness equipment, an expanded selection of free weights, and more designed to support your fitness goals. We will offer complimentary smoothies, açaí bowls, chair massages, and balance assessments to celebrate the new space. We hope you will join us for this special event and experience firsthand the thoughtful enhancements we have made to the Sports Center.
As the fall approaches, I am excited to announce a new event on our calendar: the Monster Mash on Saturday, October 26! This Halloween event will be fun for all members to get into costume and dance the night away. The Wine Committee also has their first wine dinner of the season with Chateau Montelena on October 3rd. While looking ahead, keep an eye out for our Holiday Guide, which is loaded with VHC traditions and a few new events that we hope will become favorites. Reservations will soon open for all holiday events, so secure your spot.
As we approach the holiday season, I would like to remind members that one impactful way to support the Club's operations is by hosting private events. Our December calendar is filling up quickly, but Austin Xi, our Director of Catering, still has a few dates available. Please reach out to her to plan your holiday celebration.
Thank you all for making this summer at VHC so special. A special thank you to the VHC staff for all they do and for making the summer such a success!
I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon!
Warm regards,
Mary Schaffer General Manager
staff news: welcome back, dieu!
In staffing news, I am thrilled to introduce our new Director of Communications and Marketing, Dieu Pham. Many of you may remember Dieu from her time with us during COVID-19, and we are excited to welcome her creativity back to VHC.
Dieu previously worked at VHC from 2018 to 2021, starting as an assistant to the Director of Marketing and later serving as the Director of Marketing. She holds a BA in Communications and Public Relations from California State University of Fullerton. She has recently worked at a start-up, Club Design Studio, where she managed marketing collateral for clubs, social media, website design, and brand materials. Her background makes Dieu familiar with our culture and processes, ensuring a seamless transition.
Dieu stood out among several outstanding candidates, and I am confident that her expertise and familiarity with our operations will be invaluable. Please join me in welcoming Dieu back to VHC. Here is a little background on what makes Dieu a great addition to the VHC team.
What inspired you to pursue a career in marketing, and what do you enjoy most about it?
Initially, I wanted to be an event planner out of college, but I had to get a day job while working my way up from being an assistant to a planner. After being hired as a receptionist at The Wilshire Country Club in LA, the opportunity to work in marketing and communications for the club opened up. I quickly realized my passion for creating marketing collateral and communications for events instead of planning the events! However, I still help out with event planners in my free time.
What attracted you to return to VHC, and what are you most excited about in your new role?
After working with country clubs across the nation and attending the CMAA (Club Management Association of America) conference, I noticed a common challenge for most clubs - keeping up with club branding and marketing trends. While I focused on learning how to improve the country club marketing, the opportunity to work at The Valley Hunt Club arose! I was thrilled and couldn’t wait to return to the Club as a seasoned professional with more years of marketing experience. The pandemic
We are excited for the 2024-2025 Cotillion season! As a reminder, Member children and grandchildren will always be accommodated, so please contact Janet Lie at jlie@valleyhuntclub.com to register your 3rd-6th graders. Please note that the deadline has passed for guest registrations, but they can be added to the wait list.

prompted a shift to online communications and events for The Valley Hunt Club. Despite the challenges, our team successfully hosted various virtual events, including Zoom meetings, speaker events, and wine dinners. The gavel passing with the two presidents standing 6 feet apart wearing masks was a testament to our adaptability and resilience. I continue to refer to this period as one of my career accomplishments. Now that I’m back at VHC, I’m excited to help create elevated and polished branding for VHC and continue to create captivating content for the membership.
Can you tell us a fun or interesting fact about yourself?
I want to save all the strays! My retirement goal is to foster senior shelter dogs and cats, ensuring they are comfortable and loved during their last stage of life! I have two senior chihuahuas and a small colony of backyard cats!

We are excited to announce the selection of Architect Will Shepphird (Beach Club, CA; Bellerive Country Club, MO; Sherwood Country Club, CA) and the Interior Design Firm C2, led by Craig Smith (Westchester Country Club, NY; Greenbrier Sporting Club, WV; Army Navy Country Club, VA,) to guide us in developing our future Master Plan. This decision comes as a result of an extensive and thorough selection process, which involved multiple stages of evaluation, feedback, and careful consideration by our Facilities Committee and Board of Directors.
STRATEGIC PLAN FOR FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT
One of the six pillars of our 2024 Strategic plan, Fit-for-Purpose, First-Class Campus Facilities, centers on consistently maintaining, repairing, and replacing our aging buildings, equipment, and furniture while pre-planning phased capital improvement projects as and when they become desirable. The engagement of Shepphird/C2 marks a significant step forward in this initiative, ensuring that we approach future renovations with a clear vision and respect for our Club's rich history.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
The process began with Mary Schaffer reaching out to local clubs and identifying twenty firms with relevant hospitality experience in California. These firms were carefully vetted to avoid conflicts of interest and narrowed down based on availability, attitude, relevant experience, and understanding of our unique architecture.
An ad-hoc committee, led by David Felton, Chair of the 2023-2024 Facilities Committee, was formed to narrow the list further. This committee, which included Mary Schaffer, Michael Berger, Simon Harrison, and Peg Rahn, conducted individual meetings and campus tours with six shortlisted candidates, including two interior designers, one architect, and three all-inclusive firms.
Following these meetings, the ad-hoc committee reviewed feedback and input from all attendees, ultimately narrowing the selection to two finalists: a combined team of Architect Will Shepphird and Interior Designer Craig Smith (C2), who have a longstanding partnership in delivering comprehensive design solutions and another firm. These finalists were chosen for their strong familiarity with club environments, exceptional communication skills, and expertise in master planning.
After the finalists were selected, the Board conducted in-depth interviews with both finalists and visited several sites where Will Shepphird had previously completed work. These site visits provided the Board with firsthand insight into the quality of Shepphird's work and how it aligned with our Club's needs and expectations.
20 Firms Identified By Recommendations And Research. All
The unanimous decision to select Shepphird/C2 was made after a comprehensive review of their presentations, references, and the quality of finishes and project management in their previous projects. The Board was particularly impressed with Shepphird/C2's deep understanding of our Club's unique history, enthusiasm, and proactive approach to preserving our traditions while planning for future enhancements.
NEXT STEPS
The journey ahead will be an interactive and collaborative process involving all members. This fall, Shepphird/C2 will begin with detailed tours of our clubhouse and campus, engaging with the Facilities Committee, Board of Directors, and Club Management. We aim to understand the voice of our membership, gather feedback on current offerings, and review initial conceptual designs.
In the spring, we will hold town halls to review progress, share potential future states, and gather further member input before finalizing the Master Plan updates with the City of Pasadena.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Member Participation: Your voice is crucial. The process will include focus groups, town halls, and feedback from last year's survey to ensure that our plans reflect the desires and needs of our members.
No Major Projects This Year: We do not anticipate launching any major improvement projects during this board year. Instead, we focus on creating a five-year roadmap for future improvements while maintaining our clubhouse and campus according to our maintenance schedule.
Honoring Our Legacy: We take great pride in our historic clubhouse and campus. The professionals we have selected have consistently demonstrated a deep respect for club legacies in their past work. We are confident they will honor our traditions while making the necessary updates to ensure our facilities remain first-class.
Historically, the club has been opportunistic in its growth—for example, acquiring a fitness center when a neighboring house became available. While this approach has served us well, it has resulted in a campus that was not fully pre-planned. With this project, we are shifting towards a more holistic approach to our campus development, a change we believe is necessary for our future growth and sustainability.
Critical steps were finding the right interior designer and developing a cohesive design plan. Our goal is to create a more consistent and integrated campus over time. It is important to emphasize that this aspect of the project is significant and sensitive, and we believe that members will appreciate being reminded of its importance.
We look forward to embarking on this exciting journey together and will keep you informed as we move forward.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement.
Sincerely,
Chris Cole President

CAMERON FASICK Director of Fitness
new gym equipments coming this month!
We are excited to announce a transformative new chapter for our Valley Hunt Club community as we unveil the highly anticipated upgrades to our Sports Center! This milestone marks our commitment to upholding the core values that make our club a unique and cherished institution.
At the heart of the Valley Hunt Club, our mission is to maintain a private social club that fosters companionship, health, and well-being among our Members and their families. Rooted in history and tradition, we continue to adapt to the evolving interests of our Members.
Last summer, as part of the Club’s Strategic Plan, we closely looked at our campus assets, focusing on those at the end of their life cycle and evaluating their current value. During this process, we recognized that our gym equipment, which has served us faithfully for the past 10-15 years, was overdue for an upgrade. Many of you echoed this sentiment in your Club-wide survey last July, and we
In today's rapidly changing fitness world, owning equipment has become less practical due to the high cost of repairs, outdated models, lack of cutting-edge technology, and significant financial burdens. We have transitioned to a leasing model to ensure our Members have access to the latest fitness tools. This allows us to refresh our equipment every 4-5 years or even sooner, reflecting our commitment to enhancing your experience without the hefty upfront costs.
After thorough research and extensive discussions with the Fitness Committee, followed by a presentation to the Board, the lease was approved in shortly after. We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Life Fitness Gym Equipment, the brand behind the massive gym overhaul at the California Club. This
collaboration ensures that our Members will have access to topof-the-line machines and tools designed to elevate their workouts.
Here's a sneak peek at what's in store:
brand-new Woodway Treadmills, StepMills, Rowers, Upright and Recumbent Cycles (with more of these added!), squat racks with cages, pull-up bars, multifunctional hamstring, quad, glute, and ab/adductor machines, multi-use gym cable enclosures, and all-new dumbbells, kettlebells, and benches galore! This state-ofthe-art equipment enhances your workouts and takes your fitness journey to the next level.
To make this transformation possible, the Fitness Center will be temporarily closed from September 23-25. Rest assured, we are working tirelessly to ensure the new Sports Center will exceed your expectations—it will be worth the wait!
Please mark your calendars for Saturday, September 28, at 9:00 am, when we will host a grand reopening celebration! Join us for an exciting day, including a food truck and balance assessments for all interested Members. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the new equipment, meet our fitness team, and start your journey to better health and fitness. We cannot wait to see you there!
