WARRIOR GUIDE TO GIVING AND GETTING INVOLVED

EXTEND THE GIFT MISSION Advancing Valley Christian Schools’ financial partnership with our families, friends, faculty, and staff to procure the resources to fund the Quest for Excellence™. The strength of our community’s partnership is critical to the success of VCS’ extraordinary A3 curriculum, programs, and facilities. These work in concert to produce Warriors: tomorrow’s leaders properly equipped to serve God and family while positively impacting their community and the world.

Extend the Gift Over the years, Valley Christian Schools has been blessed by hundreds of individuals and families that have supported our school’s philanthropic initiatives and provided the means to fund our Quest for Excellence. Although our beautiful Skyway Campus is now a model of modern Christian education, VCS was not always blessed with such an impressive facility. Throughout its early years, VCS was a nomadic school—low on funds, frequently changing campuses, and fighting to fulfill the dream of providing a premium Christian education to Silicon Valley. In a true answer to prayer, God provided the resources to fulfill this dream through the dedication and generous giving of time, talent, and treasure by thousands of Valley Christian’s friends, alumni, parents, faculty, and staff. While we have come a long way, the dream is renewed each year through the philanthropic efforts of VCS supporters. It is the privilege and responsibility of our current families to ensure that the Quest for Excellence is alive and well both now and in the future. This conviction has led our Advancement department to take the name Extend the Gift, as it is our charter to procure the resources necessary for Valley Christian Schools to extend the gift of premium Christian education to future generations of Bay Area students. Valley Christian Schools is an independent Christian school not subsidized by any specific church, charity, or other religious organization. To maintain this necessary autonomy, we also do not receive any funding from the government. From our humble beginnings to the development of the Skyway Campus, Valley Christian Schools has relied on the generosity of donors to support our mission. Valley Christian must acquire all funds for operations and capital improvements through tuition and fees, annual charitable contributions, and occasional capital campaigns. We follow the Independent School Financial Model, wherein charitable giving finances enhancements to our student and teacher programs. At Valley Christian Schools, these enhancements—our Quest for Excellence—are funded by annual giving to the WARRIOR FUND. The solicitation of these tax-deductible donations is intended to enable our families to give based upon their ability and calling. Every student at Valley Christian Schools is a beneficiary of charitable contributions made by past and present donors. These gifts continue to allow VCS to cultivate Warriors: tomorrow’s leaders, properly equipped to serve God and family while positively impacting their communities and the world. We are thankful for the opportunity to partner with you as we invest in the lives of the incredible young people who walk through our doors each year. Thank you for taking the time to learn about the various ways to give to Valley Christian Schools, as outlined in this brochure. We truly believe that God will continue to bless the ministry and impact of VCS and your generosity is a vital component of extending the Valley Christian legacy into the future. “Just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving,” (2 Corinthians 8:7).

Frequently UNasked Questions Valley Christian Schools has a tradition of philanthropy, and your gifts help ensure that the Quest for Excellence is realized in our school and students. Every aspect of the school is touched by annual giving through the WARRIOR FUND, including our A3 curriculum (Academic Achievement, Artistic Beauty, and Athletic Distinction); Youth With Promise (financial assistance); and Teacher/Staff Compensation Support. Parents often come to VCS with very different views of and experiences with philanthropy, and many have questions. Our philosophy is that all members of our school community should support annual giving at a level that is appropriate for them. To offer a better understanding of our philanthropic philosophy, we provide this list of frequently “un-asked” questions, featuring topics that you may have questions about but feel uncomfortable addressing.

What is the Quest for Excellence? VCS is committed to a Quest for Excellence in all of its educational programs, and provides a comprehensive kindergarten through twelfth-grade curriculum with a rigorous college preparatory program. Firmly founded on Christian values, Valley Christian Schools challenges youth to aspire toward lives of character, service, and influence while pursuing their individual Quest for Excellence.

Why does Valley Christian have the annual giving campaign (WARRIOR FUND)? VCS, in a manner consistent with many Independent Schools, raises money for the school’s needs on both an annual basis and over the long term. Annually, the WARRIOR FUND provides resources over and above tuition that enhance our current programs and enables exceptional opportunities for students on all of our campuses. The WARRIOR FUND allows for innovative programs, teacher support, financial assistance, and campus improvements. Annual gifts to the WARRIOR FUND are used during the year in which they are received and impact every student at VCS. Ensuring broad support of the WARRIOR FUND, through annual giving, is the most crucial part of VCS’ fundraising initiatives, and these gifts have the most direct and immediate impact on our students.

Why does Valley Christian Schools ask that I support the WARRIOR FUND as opposed to giving to a specific program or teacher? There are many reasons why we have implemented the WARRIOR FUND as the primary source to fund the Quest for Excellence. Two of the most important points are as follows: 1. Directed giving towards a specific program or teacher does not ensure that the Quest for Excellence is maintained throughout our entire curriculum. Valley Christian is committed to maintaining the highest standards in all areas of our A3 curriculum. 2. Directed giving can not only skew funds solely towards high-profile programs, but it can also cause the administration to be subject to the unpredictable financial capacity of parents with children currently involved in specific programs. A school must predictably support all of its programs and not let its success rise and fall as determined by specific parental involvement. Furthermore, one of our most essential programs, Youth With Promise (financial assistance), is not a program supported by its direct beneficiaries. Creating Warriors and equipping students, as our mission states, requires contributions that benefit all students. The WARRIOR FUND is the vehicle that makes our commitment to equal opportunity possible.

Youth With Promise VCS strives to offer quality education to students of all economic backgrounds. Youth With Promise (YWP), our financial assistance program, is available to students and prospective students with demonstrated financial need. To be considered for financial assistance, a student must be in good standing academically, demonstrate good citizenship, and contribute positively to VCS’ stated mission. Awards are provided to students across all VCS campuses. Financial assistance provides the opportunity for deserving and talented students to attend VCS, share in our community, and become Warriors. You can contribute to this program directly and through matching gifts from your employer. For more information on giving to the YWP program, please contact advancement@vcs.net.

Getting Involved Volunteer Giving at VCS means more than just dollars. Using your gifts, talents, or expertise to help organize and execute special events, help in your child’s classroom, or act as an ambassador of the school in your circle of influence are vital responsibilities of our current families. School events like the Quest Ball and Jog-A-Thons are led by parent volunteers and provide essential support for the WARRIOR FUND every year. In addition to helping with our main fundraising events, there are opportunities to get involved with our campus Parent Teacher Prayer Fellowship (PTPF) and make an impact. To get signed up as a volunteer for the 2021-22 school year, please contact Chris Ivy at civy@vcs.net.

Pray Valley Christian Schools recognizes that all we have is a gift of God. Prayer is the foundation of VCS, and we have parents and guardians who pray regularly together for each campus. To join these prayer intercessors, contact the main office of your campus.

Planning Your Giving Annual Gifts to the WARRIOR FUND Each family is asked to contribute annually in support of Valley Christian Schools. Annual gifts to the WARRIOR FUND are used to increase the general operating budget for the fiscal year and ensure that each student has the opportunity to succeed. The executive leadership team is committed to being good stewards of your generous contributions by providing excellent opportunities for every student, from academic programs and extracurricular activities to facility improvements and maintenance. Throughout each school year, current parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni families, and friends of Valley Christian Schools partner with us in raising resources to advance our mission. The WARRIOR FUND was created for this purpose and supports a broad array of programs and services, including our A3 curriculum (Academic Achievement, Artistic Beauty, Athletic Distinction); Youth With Promise (financial assistance); and Teacher/Staff Compensation Support.

Periodic Gifts to Capital Projects Families may be asked periodically to make a gift to a capital campaign for restoring or building a new facility at one of Valley Christian Schools’ campuses. These campaigns, although infrequent, are of the utmost importance and ensure that our state-of-the-art facilities remain excellent.

Estate Planning VCS provides resources for families who want to leave a legacy, in giving, through estate planning. You can learn more about gift and estate planning at our gift planning website at plannedgiving.vcs.net.

Deciding How Much to Give Most importantly, all gifts, no matter the size, are valued and deeply appreciated. We ask every family to join us in supporting the WARRIOR FUND. Valley Christian Schools goal is that 100% of our families would give to the WARRIOR FUND each year. Your participation at any level makes a difference to our students. Achieving our goal enables VCS to seek additional funding in the form of private foundations and corporate grants, in which participation by current families is a critical factor for selection. As each family’s financial situation varies, participation means different things to different members of our community. Families with higher annual incomes may be able to contribute more money than families with lower annual incomes. In a manner consistent with all philanthropic giving, this system provides that each gift, no matter the amount, is meaningful and matches a donor’s capacity to give. When every family gives as they are able, we hope that, together, we can raise at least $1,500 per child. Donors with the generosity and financial ability to make a gift of $2,500 or more will qualify for our Extend the Gift Leadership Circle.
