There aren’t too many folks who haven’t heard of Bissell carpet care products, but how much do you know about the inventors? This week, Tidbits focuses on Melville and Anna Bissell, the people who brought us the carpet sweeper.

Anna took a trip to Philadelphia and persuaded John Wanamaker, owner of that city’s first department store, to take on the carpet sweeper.

• In 1883, the Bissells built their first manufacturing plant in Grand Rapids.

Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the factory the following year. Anna quickly secured loans from local banks which enabled the Bissells to begin manufacturing just 20 days after the fire.

• More tragedy struck in 1889 when Melville died suddenly at age 45. Although Anna was still raising their five children, she quickly stepped up to lead the company, becoming the first female CEO in America. She expanded the business internationally, and within a few years, the factory was producing over 1,000 sweepers a day. Even Queen Victoria of England was a fan, demanding that the castle be “Bisselled” on a weekly basis.

I recently rubbed a dryer sheet on my address book and, sure enough, the sticky residue came off that, too.

MUSTY DRAWERS. To sweeten old drawers I have always used a mixture of chlorine bleach and water. If badly stained, I use the bleach full strength. I have never known it to harm the wood.

I do the same with unfinished, stained and dirty frames. After bleaching they can be varnished or painted. -- Ellen COUPON POUCHES. I use those plastic zipper pouches that kids use for pens and pencils to organize my coupons and rebates. They have a clear front and three holes punched in the side. I have several for different categories of coupons or rebates and place them in a small three-ring binder.

You can either color-code them or use a label maker to label the front of each pouch. Place an additional pouch in the back of your binder to hold receipts, rebate forms and UPC’s for easy storage.

I also keep a supply of small white envelopes, postage stamps, index cards and pens for easy rebate filling while I’m waiting places. The binder can also be used to keep track of clothing sizes of family members, shopping lists, to-do lists, etc. Make it something you’ll never leave home without.

and Wyoming, was first approved for construction in 2004, and it’s still not up. Groundbreaking for the new facility began in 2009 with completion planned for 2013.

When the builder contract was signed in 2010, the agreed-upon price was $582.8 million ... before the design was even completed. Since then, the contractor has complained about late payments, incomplete plans, change orders that went unprocessed for over a year, switching from a shared facility to a stand-alone hospital, relocation of the facility, and the discovery of an underground spring and a buried swimming pool.

No one was watching the architect, who had designed costly additions like curved walls. Medicalequipment planners weren’t used, and instead the VA got input from others with limited experience.

By January 2013, they were still haggling about trying to redesign the hospital to fit the actual budget.

At a recent meeting of the U.S. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, which was to sort out all the details, the actual cost of the project still wasn’t known. The guess at this point is that it will be more than $1 billion -- double the original estimate and a decade after the decision was made to build the facility.

In December, work came to a halt when the construction company pulled its workers off the site after a federal board of contract appeals said the VA had breached the contract. Then came word that the Army Corps of Engineers was taking over management.

Now, a decade into the project, the estimated opening will be in 2017 ... maybe.

Aurora isn’t the only location with these problems.

Why Saturated Fats Are Unhealthy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats. What is the difference? Nutritionists tell us to look out for partially hydrogenated, but never mention the other one. Seems to me both would be bad for you. -- D.D.F. ANSWER: You are quite right. There are four kinds of fat. Two are healthier -- monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, and these are found in healthy oils, like olive oil and canola oil. Two fats are unhealthy -- trans-saturated, also called partially hydrogenated, and saturated, which is fully hydrogenated but isn’t ever really called that.

Trans-saturated fat is not healthy. Food companies make it by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil at high temperature. The chemical bonds are “trans,” which are not normally found in nature.

The process makes the fat more solid at room temperature. It isn’t much of an exaggeration to call trans fat toxic, since even modest amounts increase risk for heart disease from blockage of the arteries. I recommend as little trans fat in the diet as possible -- preferably none.

Saturated fat isn’t healthy either, but it isn’t

ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation is a chaotic lack of rhythm in the heart muscle, caused by abnormal electrical impulses. The goal when treating atrial fibrillation is to reduce the risk of stroke and minimize symptoms.

One new approach to treatment is radiofrequency ablation -- that is, using radio waves sent through a small tube placed directly into the heart through a leg or arm vein. The high-powered radio waves can destroy the cells causing the atrial fibrillation, or can isolate those areas from the rest of the heart. A surgeon can do a “maze” procedure to prevent the abnormal impulses from affecting the entire heart.

It isn’t clear yet who benefits most from these kinds of procedures, but early studies have suggested better outcomes and a good chance for cure, although sometimes it takes several procedures. There are potentially serious complications, so it should be done only in centers with extensive experience. It is a good choice for people who experience symptoms and can’t take medications or for whom medicines failed.

Our identical twin grandsons will be graduating from college in June. While they are both alike in appearance and general mannerisms, one is considerably more mature than the other. We always assumed they would both mature at about the same rate, but this has not been the case. We’re a little worried. Is this abnormal? What determines the rate?

Altlhough twins are much alike in many

ways, they can become very different people. Maturity itself even has different definitions. Some define it as perseverance, acceptance, accountability, passion, and any number of other things.

The fact is that while both boys have likely been exposed to the same family household environment and upbringing, each is still progressing to “maturity” at his own rate. Each will develop his own talents, interests and other characteristics, and as they become older these differences will become more noticeable. Their uniqueness will always play an important role in who they are as individuals.

I certainly don’t see any abnormalities here, so I suggest you stop worrying and just let them march to their own drummer. Leave well enough alone and let each boy progress at his own rate.

Many, many years ago, my mother gave me an old clock that was my grandfather’s.

I have enclosed a photo of the clock for you to see. I’m almost 60 years of age, so I know it’s at least that old. It never worked, but would chime if you pushed the button on the top. At this point, however, the chime doesn’t sound any longer. I’ve kept it on a shelf as decoration and even tried to shine it, to no avail. The porcelain face of the clock shows the name “Tiffany & Co.”

Could you tell me if something like this would be of any value, other than sentimental?

I’d appreciate any information you could provide.

Your dinnerware was made by Can nonsburg Pottery. They were located in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, from 1901 to 1978. They made semi-porcelain dinnerware, hotel wares and toilet sets. Cannonsburg Pottery sold to department stores, mail-order houses and chain stores. In the Jan. 11 - May 24, 2015 beginning, decorating was done by hand. In 1960, much of their were decorated using decals. (every otherwares week) The mark “22 Karat was first used with their Corrections due Gold” by: 4pm, Wed. 1/14/15 marks around 1922. The company was founded by W. S. George and was a family owned and operated business until 1976. It was then bought by Angelo Falconi, and by 1978 the company went bankrupt.
