• Fitch’s contribution to steamboat technology from 1785 to 1796 included the design, construction and operation of four steamboats, including the one first successfully run on the Delaware River, plus the first U.S. patent for a steamboat in 1791.

• Many people incorrectly credit Robert Fulton with inventing the steamboat. Even though Fulton made great contributions to steamboat travel, John Fitch is more rightly credited as the steamboat’s true inventor.

• As a young adult, Fulton initially was an artist and later became a designer with a fascination for things facilitating water travel. His interest ranged from the building of canals, canal boats and locks that could raise and lower water levels through canals. In 1801, he built the first successful submarine, the Nautilus, which could descend to a depth of 25 feet.

Sometimes called paddleboats, sternwheelers, showboats, steamboats or riverboats, large boats propelled by steam engines revolutionized river travel over 200 years ago. The few still around today either operate as excursion boats or casinos permanently moored at river banks.

• Although Fitch built a steamboat that successfully carried passengers and freight between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Burlington, New Jersey, he never proved the operation of his vessels to be economically feasible. But a young man named Robert Fulton later showed that a commercial steamboat could be operated at a profit.

Hot Enough To Kill Your Dog

Where I sit, it’s a crime to leave a dog alone in a car on a hot day. And I don’t just mean that metaphorically; it’s against actual state law.

In California, leaving an animal unattended in a vehicle coupled with dangerous conditions such as weather, insufficient ventilation or lack of food and water is a crime punishable by up to six months in jail or $500 in fines -- or both if the animal is injured or dies.

While I’m glad there’s a law, the corresponding punishment feels somehow lacking.

That said, most people don’t want to kill their pets. Most people would be devastated knowing they’re responsible for their dog’s death due to heatstroke. Most people simply think it will never happen to them. And some people just don’t know any better.

But some people should know better. People like vets.

Last week, a Coachella Valley veterinarian left his 8-year-old German shepherd, Perro, locked in his SUV, which was parked outside his clinic. By the time police responded to the scene, the dog was in extreme heat distress. And by the time officers broke the windows in an effort to rescue the dog, it was too late. Perro died at the scene. Animal services estimated the temperature in the vehicle to be between 140 degrees and 150 degrees.

Every year, thousands of dogs die alone in hot cars. Everyday pet owners do it. Police officers do it; three police K-9s have died this summer after being left in hot cruisers by their handlers. Even veterinarians do it. Regardless of who does it, these are 100 percent preventable deaths.

Know this: Cracking the windows does nothing.

Even if it is “only” 80 degrees outside, within 10 to 15 minutes, the interior temperature of the car could be upward of 110 degrees even with the windows partially open.

While the answer to Alzheimer’s disease still remains doing everything we can to find a cure and eradicate this illness that causes so much suffering, we -- as a nation -- are not doing enough to meet the needs of desperate families and their loved ones with memory loss.

Fortunately, many communities have support groups that can provide invaluable help -sometimes financial -- to families. But much more needs to be done. We must do everything we can to allow working families to keep their loved one at home. This can be accomplished by establishing more adult day health care facilities where a patient can spend the day in a dignified, safe environment with trained personnel who are able to promote health, help maintain cognition and avoid the unnecessary use of medications.

Once a patient is no longer able to stay at home, uniquely designed facilities to meet the needs of memory disorders are critical. Often the patients are physically independent but intellectually impaired. Placing them in a regular nursing home where they mix with patients who are physically compromised but cognitively intact can prove disastrous.

Fortunately, there is a nationwide push to develop memory-disorder centers that are architecturally designed to allow a person with memory loss to wander and feel as independent as possible. Rooms are smaller to encourage socialization and bathrooms are uniquely structured to prevent falls and help uncooperative individuals with bathing.

Specialized staff is essential, as they must be able to interact with someone they know well but who sees the staff member as a stranger every time they meet. These centers learn how to provide care in a way that avoids the need for drugs to prevent agitation, while doing everything possible to exercise the body and the mind by keeping them out of their rooms and active. Often, the patient’s overall health improves because they receive nutritious and appropriate food, as well as compliance with medication use. Simultaneously removing the burden of caregiving may be invaluable to the family, who can remain just as involved in their loved one’s care.

To meet the needs of a large population with memory impairments, we must make sure the loved ones with the disease and their families have access to resources and facilities to assure lifelong dignity and the best possible quality of life for everyone touched by this brutal disease.

Beyond the age of 80, half of us will become dependent on others because of physical disabilities or memory loss. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 15 million Americans are providing unpaid care for a person with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related conditions. As the baby boomers age and the number of 80-year-olds doubles, the burden on families, communities and our nation will be overwhelming.

In the past, nonworking daughters frequently became full-time caregivers for their parents and in-laws. However, current economic realities often require that both spouses work. Thus, taking care of a parent with memory loss is becoming more difficult. The need to be a caregiver has forced more than 65 percent of us to take time off work, 20 percent to take a leave of absence and 11 percent to retire.

And more than 60 percent of caregivers say that the emotional and physical stress of caregiving can be overwhelming. Elderly caregiving spouses have a 63 percent higher chance of dying than people the same age who aren’t caring for a spouse, says the American Medical Association. They’re at particular risk of developing depression and sleep problems.

In the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss can be nothing more than a minor disability. With some help, the patient is able to manage well in the community, function almost normally, drive, travel and not be a burden on their families. But with time, as other elements of intellectual function decline, the patient depends more and more on the caregiver, becoming agitated when left alone. The patient may become disruptive, refuse to pay attention to personal hygiene, frequently wander and be awake all night while dozing during the day.

With time, Alzheimer’s patients become more childlike and may lose their inhibition and do things that in the past would be unthinkable. They are unable to be left alone for one minute. Incontinence can become a problem; hallucinations, delusions and paranoia are common, and the patient

Those Darn Social Security Offsets

I can tell from my emails that it’s time for me to once again tackle the touchy subject of those misunderstood Social Security offsets. And because so many people don’t understand the law, they mistakenly think they are being singled out for Social Security reductions that don’t impact anyone else. And they are simply wrong about that.

Who are these folks who think they are being cheated? They are people who will get a pension from a job not covered by Social Security. They might be teachers in Texas or California. They might be police officers in Washington State or firefighters in Ohio. They might be retiring federal government employees still covered under the old civil service retirement system. About 10 percent of all jobs in this country are not covered by Social Security (for reasons I’ve explained countless times in past columns.)

Folks in those situations are potentially subject to a couple of offsets that impact either their own Social Security benefit (based on Social Security-covered work they did outside of their regular job) or any benefits they potentially might be due from their spouse’s Social Security record. And by the way, as a retired federal employee getting a civil service pension, I, too, am impacted by both offsets. But because I understand the law, they make perfect sense to me, and I know they are fair. I will try to explain them to you.

One offset is called the “windfall elimination provision,” or WEP. This is the one that impacts your own Social Security benefit. The other is called the “Government Pension Offset,” or GPO, and it reduces any spousal benefits you might be due.

The key to understanding the WEP provision is to realize that the word “social” in Social Security means something. Unlike private and other public sector pension plans, there are social goals built into the Social Security program. One of those goals is to raise the standard of living of lower income workers in retirement. This is accomplished through a benefit formula that is designed to give lower-paid workers a better deal than their more highly-paid counterparts. Very low-paid workers could get a Social Security benefit that represents up to 90 percent of their earnings. This percentage is known as a “replacement rate.” People with average incomes (the middle class) generally get a 40 percent replacement rate. Higher-income people get a rate around 30 percent.

The problem is that people who spend the bulk of their working lives not paying into Social Security are automatically treated as low-income people by the Social Security Administration’s computers. That’s because there are “zeros” on their Social Security earnings record for every year they spent in their non-Social Security job. SSA’s records won’t show they were actually working at the other job and earning another pension.

Instead, their Social Security earnings record simply shows gaps in their work history. So when figuring their Social Security retirement benefit, SSA’s computers automatically use the formula intended to compensate a lower-income person. more teasers log on to

The bulbous legs, applied panels, the use of multiple woods and the veneered top with decorative crest are representative of the Jacobean Colonial Revival.

The chair with arms is a host’s chair and usually included with dining sets made in the early 1900s. The style is Jacobean Revival, one of the variations of Colonial Revival.

The American Furniture Mart was located on Lake Shore Blvd., Chicago, Ill. It opened in 1926 and was designed to showcase new furniture. The building was 30 stories high, and at the time, it was the largest building in the world. The Midwest housing market was expanding, resulting in a plethora of furniture manufacturers. Homeowners were in a buying mood for both homes and furniture. Chicago was accessible and centrally located for tradeshows and galleries. Over the entrance door of the mart was a carving of a lumberjack, a sawyer and a carpenter all symbolizing the furniture industry. Today the building houses condominiums. Based on the label, your set was made by Vaughn Furniture in Indianapolis and is featured in one the Mart galleries.

Currently, demand is minimal for Colonial Revival furniture. Based on the poor condition and the need of refinishing, the value for your set would probably be in the low hundreds. * * *

Some, myself included, thought Ted Turner should have been in charge of the games and not Billy Payne. Turner had, after all, started “The Goodwill Games” in the wake of Jimmy Carter’s absurd decision to boycott the Moscow Summer Olympic Games in 1980. And while Ted certainly got his out of the deal (after the games, the Olympic Stadium was neatly converted into “Turner Field.”)

My career trajectory led to my hiring by the world’s largest technology acronym (figure it out), and I was lucky enough to score a job with them inside the Olympic Village.

And here’s why I laugh at the Olympics today: Yes, we had the “Dream Team II,” but it was 4-feet-nothing Kerri Strugg who stole the show. The basketball team earned money for their involvement in these past games (I’m not sure what they were paid in 1996), but I think that sort of misses the point of the games.

I’ll expound more in next week’s column...

Adapting to the ball above your feet

Have you ever gone to the driving range and hit the ball great only to see it disappear when you play the course? If that is the case, the reason could be that when you are on the driving range the ball is on a flat lie that is level to your feet.

When you play on the golf course the ball is lying at angles that could position the ball above or below your feet.

The first thing you want to do when you are getting ready to hit your shot is to assess the lie. Is the ball above or below my feet? You can see in the picture that I drew a line along the ground that represents “foot level”. The ball is approximately a couple inches above that line. With the ball being above my feet I need to make two adjustments to my setup; 1) I need to grip down an inch off the top of the club, therefore shortening the shaft. 2) I need to be taller in the legs and in my spine angle.

The biggest challenge in golf is that the ball lie’s at various degrees on sloped ground. That challenge requires that you develop the ability to adapt to those angles to produce the best shot possible.

Have you ever found yourself hitting the ball great at the driving range, only to see all that disappear on the course? It could be that the ball at the range is always level to your feet, but on the hilly course your setup is always changing.

To overcome these terrain changes, you first need to assess your lie. Is the ball above or below your feet? In the photo I’ve drawn a line to represent my “foot level”. In this case the ball is several inches above that line, which means I need to make two adjustments to my setup: 1) I need to grip down an inch off the top of the club to shorten the shaft. 2) I need to be taller in the legs with less angle in my back.

My swing will also need some adjusting. My right foot needs to push my hip up through the ball to avoid hitting it fat, and I’ll finish with my hips and shoulders level to the horizon. This swing is somewhat similar to a baseball swing, more horizontal than “down” to the ball.

• People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe.

• Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right.

• Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
