FAMOUS DUOS

(from page one)

Abbott and Lou Costello appeared in 38 films together. They got their start in burlesque in 1935, moving on to radio, film and television. They were box office stars by 1941 and began their own TV series in 1952. However, fame didn’t come without its difficulties. Both comics were habitual gamblers, and Abbott managed the pain from his epilepsy condition with alcohol. Costello battled with rheumatic fever, which forced him to take a year off from work. On the day he returned to the set, his infant son drowned in the family swimming pool. Both men were charged for back taxes by the IRS in 1956, and both were forced to sell their homes and film rights to cover the debt.

If there’s one worthy goal for the new year, it’s learning to live within your budget. That’s not the same as living within your income. Many people assume that having something left over at the end of the pay period, or at least not resorting to credit cards to get through the last few days, constitutes living within a budget. By definition, a budget is a detailed plan for how you?ll spend and save your money. Living within a budget means sticking to a plan that accounts for every dollar of your income -- everyday expenses, paying off different debts at certain rates and saving a set amount for various future goals and emergencies. To set up a budget, start with realistic and accurate numbers: the income you bring home after taxes are deducted. Don’t include the extra money from odd jobs or selling items you own. From this amount, subtract all of your fixed expenses, such as rent or mortgage, car payment and loans. Variable expenses are next and can be determined from previous expenses. Electric costs, for example, likely vary through the year. Groceries can be estimated. Other variable expenses, such as credit-card debt, will be determined by how quickly you’re working to pay off the balances. The goal is to account for where the money goes and analyze it to find places you can cut back. The one category in your budget that needs more attention than any other is your rate of saving. In addition to the 10 percent that you should be paying yourself out of every check, do everything you can to increase what you put away. Your greatest success at finding more dollars to save will likely come

How to Preserve Aging Newsprint Paper Everyday CHEAPSKATE

DEAR MARY: I am looking for a proce® dure to prevent the yellowing of newsprint. I have several old newspaper clippings that I by Mary Hunt want to preserve as family keepsakes but they are already beginning to yellow. I would appreciate any ideas or solutions you might have. Thanks. -- Marilyn, Illinois Dear Marilyn: It’s the high acid content that makes newsprint turn yellow. And just as you would treat acid in your tummy, you need to soak that paper in antacid. Mix 1 quart club soda with two tablespoons Milk of Magnesia, and refrigerate for eight hours before using. Pour the solution into a shallow pan; submerge the clipping, and let it soak for one hour outside the refrigerator. Carefully remove the clipping, and place it on several layers of white paper towel to absorb any excess moisture. Then move it to a clean, flat surface to dry completely. Be sure to test this method on a part of the newspaper you don’t care to preserve just to make sure the method does not react poorly with the ink. It is not likely, but it’s better to be safe. Here’s another tip: Always display newspaper clippings out of direct sunlight to prevent fading. You might also consider making photocopies of the clippings on high quality copy paper, then spraying over the image with a fixative, which will protect it and act as a preservative. You can buy spray fixitive in aerosol cans at most art stores. *** DEAR MARY: Years ago, when young girls got married, their mothers would make hankies for the bride to carry. Hanky Blanks in the state of Washington offers a Hanky Baby Bonnet Kit. With just a few folds and a little tacking with a needle and thread, you can make a beautiful baby bonnet that baby can wear home from the hospital or for christening (or anytime, really). Then, tuck it away until the child is ready to be married. Snip the tacking, unfold it, and you have a wedding hanky. It really is a cute keepsake. You can make it exactly as directed, or use your imagination and tack bows, lacy ribbons or anything you like on it. I also suggest visiting Hanky Blanks at www.hankyblanks.com. * * * DEAR MARY: I have several pairs of earrings with missing back pieces and, of course, I can’t find them anywhere. I could use the back from another pair, but I’d really like to replace the backs so I can store the earrings properly. -- Martha, Minnesota Dear Martha: Most craft stores carry packages of earring backs in the jewelry-making aisle. You’ll have your choice of finishes and quality. In the meantime, should you lose a back at work or other inconvenient time, here’s my favorite quick fix: Simply cut a slice off the end of a pencil’s eraser with a craft knife or scissors. You can push the earring post through the eraser quite easily. It makes for a very secure fit, is comfortable and works like a charm.

One New York City resident is kicking off 2012 with a weighty goal: to change the legal status of pets from “property” to “living souls.” Elena Zakharova has filed a civil suit in New York against the Upper East Side pet store that sold her a Brussels Griffon puppy, now named Umka. According to the suit, “Umka suffers a disorder causing her pain, her legs hurt, she cries when she is in pain, she drags herself with her front paws, she cannot run like other puppies.” MSNBC reports that “Zakharova is seeking compensation for past and upcoming surgeries and other medical treatment involved with Umka, which totals at least $8,000. She also wants a full return of the dog’s sale price plus interest since the date of purchase in February of last year.” But the suit is not about the money, at least not in the obvious sense. Zakharova’s attorney, Susan Chana Lask, says her client intends to donate any monetary awards to an animal welfare organization. The real target of this lawsuit? Puppy mills. According to MSNBC, “The suit seeks to hold the store liable for the dog’s pain and suffering, as well as its medical bills, as if it were a person rather than an inanimate product.” And Lask argues, “It’s already a felony to abuse an animal. If I kick my Chihuahua and beat it, I’m getting arrested, so that animal has rights. If they have criminal rights, why not put rights on a damaged leg or a heart condition? If we’re not equating (a pet) to a human being, and we’re not equating it to a table, there has to be something in the middle.” And that “something in the middle,” that new legal status, could be just the thing to scare pet store owners into thinking long and hard before buying from puppy mills. The fear of being dragged into court and getting hammered with substantial damages from lawsuits could be the impetus for real production change in an industry for which change is long overHRS: 1 MIN: 45 due. Sandrastamp DeFeo, executive director of The HuAdVenture Media mane Society of New York, says, “I don’t know where this case is going to go, but it’s good that it brings awareness that pets are not just a commodity and that we have to take this seriously. ... Though you may not know it, scientists have already found the one magic bullet that will prevent disease, promote longevity and ensure lifelong independence. It’s neither sexy nor groundbreaking. It’s easy and hard, simple and complex all at the same time. It’s exercise. Whether you start early or late, the benefits of moving more are astounding. Exercise helps your body work at its optimum level. With cardiovascular training, you work the most important muscle in the body -- the heart. A stronger heart means fewer heart attacks and more blood pumping through the body with less exertion. This, in turn, lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of strokes. Regular exercise helps maintain an ideal weight and speeds up metabolism. It also reduces the risk of diabetes, colon cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis, prostate cancer and depression. When it comes to exercise, throw age out the window. Don’t slow down after 50 -- speed up! It’s even more important now that you keep up the momentum and make exercise a part of your daily life. Get off your butt and make fitness a priority. 760.320.0997 Fax: 760.320.1630 The Neatest Little Paper Ever Read working out! valleybits@msn.com Final Changes DUE: 5:00 p.m.. YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

January Often the Best Month to File for Social Security I write a column similar to this one every January. But I don’t mind plagiarizing myself because it contains a very important message for people planning to retire in 2012. January is a critical month for the hundreds of thousands of potential Social Security beneficiaries who are reaching their so-called full retirement age in 2012. The important message: All of them should at least consider the possibility of filing for their benefits this month, even though they may not be reaching their retirement age until later in the year. The reason for this early-filing timeframe has to do with some quirky and complicated features of Social Security’s earnings penalty provisions. Those provisions generally keep seniors who are still working off of Social Security’s rolls until they reach that magic “full retirement age.” For most people reading this column, your full retirement age is probably 66. (Check out SocialSecurity.gov for a chart listing the various full retirement ages.) The law essentially says that if you’re over 62 but under your full retirement age and are still working full-time, you are not eligible for Social Security. Specifically, the rules require that the SSA deduct $1

Financial aid for post graduate education may be possible by applying for student loans, internships, scholarships and part-time work. To get the ball rolling, consult an estate planner familiar with student financing needs. What better time than now to look ahead and set up savings accounts for their futures? For example, currently, under Internal Revenue Service regulations, you can gift up to a maximum of $13,000 per individual per year without a tax penalty. Increased costs for education are obviously ahead. Each of your grandchildren may choose a different road, perhaps one to a career path and the other choosing to raise a family. Individual accounts offer individual options. After you list all the possibilities, discuss the options with them. Tell them the birthday and holiday gifts they now receive may be smaller next year, and the money instead will go into their trust accounts. That should prove to be a great incentive to keep those grades up!

Porcelain Tray Sent a Message Q:

I have enclosed a photo of a porcelain tray that was a wedding gift to an aunt of mine in 1923. I have taken it to several antiques shops and was told in each instance that they had never seen anything like it. Marked on the bottom is the word “Noritake,” and it is in pristine condition. My aunt told me the tray was meant to be a “calling card” receiver. If you can tell me anything about my tray and its approximate value, I will be so grateful.

A:

Nippon Toki Kaisha has produced Noritake Porcelain in Japan since 1904. Leaving a printed calling card on a tray was a Victorian Era ritual that was extremely popular in the mid 1800s and early 1900s. A lady would make her rounds visiting friends and present her personal card to the butler. He would then place it on a special tray that sat on a stand in the entryway. The tray was taken to the lady of the house and she would decide if the visit was convenient. Also, if no one was home, a card was left so it was known who had come calling. By the 1920s, the custom was waning. Your circa 1923 calling card tray decorated with a duck is unusual and very collectible. Similar Noritake porcelain figural trays and dishes can be found selling from $125 to $225.
