● It was our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, who made the following sage observation: “No matter how much cats fight, there always seem to be plenty of kittens.” ● If you are a stay-at-home mom, you probably won’t be surprised by a recent study that found lower levels of stress in mothers who work outside the home than in those who stay with their kids all day. ● George Reeves is best known for playing the title role in the 1950s TV show “Adventures of Superman.” The role was a risky one, though -- not in front of the camera, but during his numerous public appearances. It seems that fans wanted to test the strength of the Man of Steel, so they often kicked and punched him. At a 1953 appearance in Detroit, one boy pulled out his father’s loaded .45 Army Colt and aimed it at Reeves’ chest. By telling the boy that the bullets would bounce off his own chest and ricochet into the crowd, harming others, Reeves managed to get the boy to put the gun down. ● Though unenforced (and likely unenforceable), there is a law on the books in Tennessee that bars atheists, preachers and duelists from holding elected office.

Ruth pointed toward the outfield bleachers just before nailing a home run into that exact location. The validity of Ruth’s called shot is a matter of controversy and is still debated by sports purists today.

A World of Adventure America obviously doesn’t corner the market on men and woman of courage and adventurous spirit. Here are a few interesting examples of our fellow explorers across the globe. • Alastair Humphreys of the United Kingdom has ridden his bicycle over 46,000 miles in various locales around the world, and he did it before he was 35 years old. He has also crossed Iceland’s glacial highlands entirely on foot and is planning what will be the longest journey to the South Pole ever attempted without support. • After travelling nearly everywhere on the globe, Humphreys decided to see more of the country of his birth. He spent all of 2011 in Great Britain. He completed an ambitious group of “microadventures,” beginning and ending these trips at the front door of his home outside London. • Among his explorations in 2011 was a hike up the M25, the well-known roadway that is notorious for having the worst traffic in the country. He also swam the Thames River, familiarized himself with the UK’s public transportation and spent several days living entirely off the land. • Humphreys used social media to encourage his fellow adventurers to record video diaries of their own “microadventures.” Through Twitter, he received a surprising number of responses, some from as far away as Japan. • Austrian mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner recently became the only woman to summit all 14 of the peaks worldwide that measure

Europe have already seen the latest continuing episodes of the popular British series. Can you tell us when we can expect season-three episodes to start here in the U.S.? -- Tom S., Hartford County, Conn.

A:

Q:

Your European relatives might be confusing season two with season three, as season three is still in production. While Europe will get to see the third season before us -- it’s scheduled to air on ITV in England in September, and here in America on PBS in January 2013 -- I can guarantee you that, as of now, they haven’t seen any more than you have. ***

A:

In my opinion, the fourth season of “Southland” was the best yet. Please tell me it’s been renewed for another season! -- Matt F., Sacramento, Calif.

I’m a big fan of Scott Aukerman, and I especially love his podcast, “Comedy Bang! Bang!” I heard that it is going to become a TV series. Is that true? -- Jonathan V., via e-mail You heard right! Writer/ comedian Scott Aukerman -- who is best known for his work with “Mr. Show with Bob and David” and for co-creating “Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis” -- will indeed be bringing his hilarious podcast to the Scott Aukerman small screen. IFC has picked up “Comedy Bang! Bang!” which premieres Friday, June 8, at 10 p.m. To gear up for the show -- which will feature such big-name stars as Zach Galifianakis, Amy Poehler, Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks -- go to ifc. com/fix/2012/05/reggie-watts-makes-music to see Jon Hamm show off his freestyle skills on an improvised jam about the classic TV show “Taxi.” And check the website often, as new webisodes will air throughout the season.

TNT agree with your assessment of “Southland,” as they have renewed the hit cop series for a 10-episode fifth season, which is scheduled to begin airing in February 2013. As the date gets closer, I’ll be sure to fill my readers in on all the details.

Big Scammer Nabbed Two years ago, New Mexico’s attorney general slammed shut a charity that was set up to help veterans. The reason given at the time was that some of the officers in the U.S. Navy Veterans Association had fictitious addresses in the paperwork. Added to that was the fact that the charity was spending barely 1 percent of the money it raised on veterans. That FREE was the first indication that something wasn’t right, and more details quickly surfaced. The 80-odd people who were supposedly on the board of directors couldn’t be found, and the “headquarters” was a mail drop. Only “Bobby Thompson” could be located, but wasn’t talking. With the NVA shut down and nine states and two government agencies after him, Thompson went on the run. Thompson (aka Ronnie Brittain, which was also a false identity), alleged director of the organization, was wanted for money laundering, corruption and identity theft. Fast-forward two years: Thompson, or whoever he really is, has been caught. In a bar. In Oregon. His pockets were stuffed with multiple false identification documents. The U.S. Marshals have him in hand. He’s accused of conning well-meaning folks out of $100 million over eight years. Let me repeat that amount: One Hundred. Million. Dollars. Think what that money could have bought, how many veterans could have been helped had the money been used for legitimate purposes. If there is that much money being donated to veterans causes, if there are that many people opening their wallets, that’s fantastic, but let’s get it right. Know where that money is really going, and how it’s going to be used. If you want to donate money, check out the organization first. YOUR

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

Medicare Enrollment Regular readers of this column know that I don’t like to get into Medicare issues. I retired in 2005 following a 32 year career with the Social Security Administration. And despite what many people think, Medicare is not run by SSA. It is managed by a federal agency called the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. But the problem is that CMMS does not have any field offices. On the other hand, SSA has a network of about 1,200 branch offices in big cities and small towns across America. So CMMS contracts with SSA to help people enroll in the Medicare program. That means that as a general rule, SSA employees (and frumpy old SSA retirees like me) know a few things about Medicare enrollment issues. But after we get you signed up for Medicare, we wash our hands of you and let private industry take over. CMMS works with insurance companies around the country to actually run the Medicare program. And good luck with that! So I bill myself as a Social Security expert, but not much of a Medicare expert. However, when I get questions about Medicare enrollment, I am usually able to answer them. Here are a couple of examples:

might as well automatically enroll all current Social Security beneficiaries in Medicare at age 65 -- and let the two percent who don’t want Medicare take some action to decline it. So, about three months before your 65th birthday, you will get a “Medicare Enrollment Package” in the mail. Assuming you want both parts to Medicare (I’ll explain that in a minute), you simply sign the Medicare card that comes with the package and file it away with your other important household papers. That’s it. You don’t do anything else. You’ll be an official beneficiary of Medicare effective with October 1, 2012. There are two main parts to Medicare. Part A, or hospital insurance, is free. Actually, you paid for it throughout your working life with the Medicare taxes that were deducted from your paychecks. The other half of traditional Medicare, called Part B or doctors/medical insurance, isn’t free. You pay a monthly premium (about $115 for most people) that is deducted from your Social Security check. Since you pay for this insurance, you have the option of declining it. But because of the way the insurance industry is structured in this country, almost everyone must take Part B. About the only people who don’t need it are those who are still working and are covered by an employer’s insurance plan. (See the next question.) If you don’t want Part B, you sign the back of the Medicare card that comes in the enrollment package indicating you are declining Part B. You mail that card back to the government and they send you another card that says you have Part A coverage only.

The “Cries of London” scenes were based on original paintings by English artist Francis Wheatley. He painted scenes of people selling their wares in London streets around 1792. Each scene had a specific title. Your Tuscan fine china plates were made Staffordshire, England, around 1947. Each plate would probably be worth $20 to $25.

on your iPad. (Carrier rates may apply ... better stick to the WiFi.) 1. MLB At Bat 2012 This is the best sports app in the world, and it keeps getting better. It’s one of the handfuls of really incredible things Major League Baseball has offered up to fans, and with every passing year MLB seems to get it more and more. This app has been on the market since 2010, I think, but it doesn’t matter because it’s grown by leaps and bounds ever since. For 14 semoleons -- about the price of one hot dog and a beer at a baseball game -- you get to hear every radio broadcast of every game from both team’s markets (your choice), and when there’s a highlight, it’s streamed to you in video. You also get a game highlight reel after every game and pretty good (not excellent, sorry) sports reporting after every game. There’s even a free MLB TV game of the day. But where the app really excels? The classic pitcher versus batter duel. The app is so strong it can tell you how fast the pitch was when it left the pitcher’s hand and how far it dipped from the mound to the plate in inches. All of the other statistical things you want or need are in the app, too. This is the gold standard. If you’re a baseball lover and you don’t buy this app, you’re not only a fool, but you’re not a baseball lover. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. • Willie and Damian delivered the collected vegetation to the U.S. Geological Survey, and to researchers at Montana State University. These samples will be used to help scientists investigate how climate change might affect our food production in the future. The brothers also brought back samples of rock near the summit of Everest for microbial study. It is hoped that these samples may provide insight into the effects of high levels of UV radiation on life at the microscopic level.

Many golfers have a difficult time finishing their swings in balance. It’s hard for them to “strike a pose” and hold their finish. This is often a result of poor body balance throughout their swing. PHOBIAS (continued): • Some phobias relate to what’s up above, such as the sun (heliophobia), the clouds (nephophobia), the moon (selenophobia), and the stars (siderophobia). Some folks are just afraid of looking up – they are called anablephobes. • Not all phobias seem that abnormal or uncommon. Lots of people might have a fear of death, known as necrophobia. But those with an extreme form might be terrified of being buried alive. A nosocomephobe has a fear of hospitals, a verminophobe is afraid of germs, and a hydrophobe has an irrational fear of water. • Individuals suffering from extreme agoraphobia rarely leave their homes, due to their fear of public or open spaces and the inescapable situations that may occur there. Only home is safe. • Some phobias can be a learned behavior that comes from listening to others describe a traumatic event. An individual in one’s life can trigger a phobia, such as peladophobia, the fear of bald people. Those with nosto-phobia, a fear of returning home, may be able to contribute their panic to a specific incident. • People who are afraid of looking into mirrors have cataptrophobia, while those with cyberphobia have a fear of working with computers. A person with an anxiety about memories is a mnemophobe. • Don’t confuse levophobia, the fear of objects to a person’s left, with dextrophobia, the fear of objects to the right. • Although some of us fear the possibility of cancer, an extreme carcinophobe will convince himself he has cancer because he touched someone who has it.
