• Construction of the tower began in 1173 and occurred in three stages that spanned 177 years. Set in weak, unstable subsoil, the tower design was flawed from the beginning. By the time the first three stories were completed, the Tower had already begun to lean. It’s no small wonder it happened, since the city of Pisa itself takes its name from a Greek word meaning “marshy land.”

Some days it feels as if my 40 years of working with dogs have earned me professional competency in the field of couples counseling. This was especially true this week, when I took a call from a man whose first words to me were: Ya gotta save my marriage.

He and his wife, newlyweds, are just back from their honeymoon. As the next logical step in building a life together, he is in the process of moving into her home, soon to be their home. While one might question the wisdom of the “marry first, get to know each other later” school of thought for those willing to agree to such daunting terms as “till death do us part,” my years of experience as a marriage and family counselor, ahem, dog trainer, suggested something else was going on.

In talking with the two of them together, a far less insidious truth was revealed. It isn’t that she doesn’t like dogs. Period. It’s that she doesn’t like the behavior of dogs, generally, and of these dogs, production particularly. An entirely different beast...

I am 67 years old. I took my Social Security at age 66. I have a 17-year-old son, a 14-year-old daughter and a 57-year-old wife.

All three of them are getting benefits as dependents on my account. The Social Security office told me that my kids will keep getting checks until age 19. And my wife will get Social Security until the youngest one turns 19. But by then, she will be 62, so she will be able to get regular wife’s benefits at that point. They also said the total amount we are getting now will never change. Is all of that true?

A:

No, it’s not true. You either misunderstood what the Social Security people were telling you or got some bum advice. I’m going to assume the former because the rules involving benefits paid to a family can get quite messy and are not easy to follow. But I will try to explain it as simply as possible.

I’ll start with a couple of basic Social Security principles. As someone who has worked and paid taxes, you obviously are due your retirement benefit. Your children qualify for benefits until they reach age 18 (not 19). If they are still in high school on their 18th birthday, their benefits can continue until they graduate or turn 19, whichever comes first.

Your wife qualifies for what are known as “mother’s benefits” until the youngest child turns 16. Based on what you told me, she will be 59 when Tues., Apr. 5 benefits will that happens. At that point, her mother’s stop. But when she turns 62, she then can file for regular dependent wife’s benefits on your record.

Now let’s look at how everyone’s benefits will play out as the years go along. You didn’t tell me what you are getting. So to help explain, let’s say your full age 66 retirement benefit is $2,000 per month.

Seeing your “Antique or Junque” column in our local paper prompted me to send you the enclosed question and photo. This is a photo of an antique secretar y that has been in my family for generations. In 1855, one of my ancestors commissioned it to be made by a professional cabinetmaker from Chittenango, N.Y. It is made of black walnut and is in excellent condition. The fruit shaped pulls on the drawers are hand car ved, and the glass in the arched doors is original to the piece.

My secretar y is a family treasure, and I would appreciate you giving me your opinion of its value and histor y.

The title is “The Boston Cooking-School Cookbook” by Fannie Merritt Farmer. Little, Brown and Co. in Boston published it in 1921. It has some handwritten notes and recipes inside the cover and the overall condition is good.

This mark is blue and is on the back of a plate that belonged to my mother.

I am 84 years old, and it was in the family as far back as I can remember. The plate is decorated with bright green leaves against a white background. Originally, there was gold trim but most of it has worn off. Otherwise it is in great shape, with no chips or cracks.
