• As you would imagine, larger birds fly faster than smaller ones with speeds ranging from 2050 miles per hour. Some flocks fly for about 10 hours a day, which could be as much as 500 miles! He found that his extraordinary hand-eye coordination and three-dimensional reasoning skills gave him exceptional ability to become a superior surgeon. This time the knife in his hand was meant to save lives, not to harm them.

• After medical school, Carson was awarded one of only two positions as an intern in neurology for Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. After his successful internship and four years as a resident in neurosurgery there, he and his wife Candy moved to Perth, Australia, for a one-year residency.

Consumer Confidence Vital to Recovery

Can America have an economic recovery without strong increases in consumer spending?

Can consumer spending rebound given the jobless situation? And will consumers ever be willing to go deeply into debt again to finance their spending?

Those are just some of the issues raised by the latest Heartland Monitor poll sponsored by Allstate and the National Journal. As a panelist at last week’s unveiling of the poll data in Washington D.C., I was asked to comment on those issues along with the ongoing implications of the housing crisis and political gridlock. The moderator of the event was Ron Brownstein, political director of the Atlantic.

This is the 10th in a series of polls that track overall consumer sentiment. Each poll also focuses on a specific headline topic -- the current topic being consumer debt. Here are some of the headlines about consumer sentiment:

-- Americans’ pessimism is at its highest point since the first Heartland Monitor poll in April 2009, at which time the Dow Jones industrial average had just fallen to under 7,000 and the economy was in the depths of recession.

-- Americans express little confidence that Washington will come to an agreement to reduce the federal budget deficit. But Americans are overwhelmingly in agreement that such a deal would have a positive impact on the economy. That sentiment cuts across all lines of income, race and education.

In a word, what is lacking in the American economy is confidence.

-- The economic downturn has caused more Americans to pay off debt rather than to incur debt. That can be seen in the consumer savings rate, which early in 2005 had actually gone into negative territory as consumers borrowed on their home equity to finance their lifestyle.

-- When questioned about whether personal debt helps them reach the “American dream” or hinders them in that quest, the vast majority sees debt as an obstacle to reaching their goals. Notably, more of those in higher income brackets tend to see borrowing against future earnings for worthwhile investments such as a home mortgage, an education or a business as a worthwhile endeavor.

-- Nearly half of poll respondents said they were paying down their debt levels and not taking on new debt -- even if that meant cutting back on spending.

Overall, the poll shows that Americans remain optimistic about the possibilities for reaching their American dream -- if only their government could get its act together!

There was a small ray of optimism on that possibility when Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. -- a member of the deficit reduction super committee -- spoke about the progress being made to come to agreement before Dec. 23, when lack of agreement will trigger automatic spending cuts in the 2013 budget.

The bulk of my time is devoted to helping aggressive dogs and their owners. Their stories tend to begin something like this: My dog is wonderful 99.9 percent of the time, but he bites. The behavior is getting worse, and I don’t know what to do. I love my dog very much.

We adopted a trained hunting dog two years ago. I love this dog more than anything; however, he has bitten us on multiple occasions and recently bit my face rather viciously. I cannot trust him.

The issue isn’t guarding or a lack of discipline or attention. Every day, I walk him, play with him, give him affection, feed him, have him do tricks and have him listen to me when I tell him to do things. He is sweet, affectionate and well-behaved 98 percent of the time (not an excuse, just explaining his general temperament).

I think whatever issues he has are deep-rooted psychological ones. I am not sure what to do, but we cannot have a dog that hurts my husband or me.

The organism may then invade the nervous system, resulting in meningitis or encephalitis that can cause a severe headache, confusion and disorientation, gait and balance problems, as well as convulsions.

For reasons that are not well understood, listeria infections are more common in pregnant women. While listeria causes only mild symptoms in the mother, the bacteria frequently infect the fetus, leading to miscarriage, premature delivery, permanent brain damage and death.

In those with a serious illness, identifying the organism in the stool, blood and cerebrospinal fluid and treating with antibiotics may prevent serious adverse effects. Patients always require hospitalization. Antibiotic treatment is given for two weeks, or for four weeks if the brain is involved.

Clearly, contaminated foods are a serious health threat. There is, however, much that can be done to reduce the risk of food poisoning. The way food is handled is particularly important.

When shopping, separate raw meat, poultry and seafood from other foods in the grocery cart and place them in plastic bags to prevent their juices from contaminating other products. Separate these foods at checkout and keep them in separate grocery bags.

When refrigerating foods, place raw meat, poultry and seafood in containers or sealed plastic bags to prevent their juices from dripping onto other foods. Do not leave eggs, meats, poultry, seafood or milk for extended periods of time at room temperature. Promptly refrigerate leftovers and food prepared in advance. Do not consume food that has been refrigerated for too long, and never consume outdated foods or liquids.

Always wash hands with soap and warm water before and after handling foods. Prepare animal products on clean cutting boards and use separate utensils. Cook foods to the recommended temperature prior to eating and beware of undercooked or rare poultry, meat or fish.

Thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables under running water rather than in a bowl or sink and assure that they do not come into contact with other raw foods or unclean surfaces. Never cut meat with a knife and then immediately use it to chop or slice vegetables.

In relation to the food we eat, cleanliness and compulsive attention to appropriate preparation are the keys to preventing serious illness.

Foot Swelling a Sign of Heart Problems?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a problem with my feet swelling. They get so big that they hurt when I walk. My doctor is puzzled.

He thinks maybe it’s due to my heart pills, but he can’t change them -- my heart doctor has to.

I have had two heart attacks, bypass surger y and a defibrillator put in my chest. When I’m in bed, the swelling goes down to almost normal.

When I am up, it returns, even if I am sitting.

Clinker Is Collectible Q:

I would appreciate anything you can tell me about the cast iron item that I show in the attached photo. I have been told it might be a “clinker bucket,” but I’m not really sure what it is. It is approximately 20 inches long and 14 inches high, and the lid lifts up. My cat could fit inside!

A:

You do have a clinker bucket, and it is collectible. Clinkers are fragments or the residue from a coal fire. Buckets similar to yours were made in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

I recently saw one very much like yours selling for $250 in an antiques shop.

We just inherited a drop leaf dining table with matching chairs from my parents. The set includes six chairs and two extension leaves. Only one chair has arms. Each piece is marked “Haywood Wakefield -- Wheat -- Modern Danish.” On the table is the number “M1549,” and on each chair the number “M1553A.” My parents bought the set around 1960, and it is in perfect condition.

It brings back many good memories, and we plan to keep it, but would like to know

This mark is on the back of a small porcelain painting that has been in our family for almost 100 years. The painting is a portrait of a woman with flowers in her hair. She is sitting and wearing a rose colored gown. It measures 6 inches by 4 inches; it is in an ornate wood frame embellished with gold; and it is in mint condition. The name “Marguerite Riesen” is marked on the back.
