• If you were standing on the equator during either the vernal or autumnal equinox and looked straight up, you would see the sun pass directly overhead. This phenomenon occurs twice a year at this latitude, when both day and night are of equal length.

• Why are there more daylight hours in the spring and summer? It’s because of the permanent 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth’s axis. For half of its yearlong orbit around the sun, the northern half of the globe is tilted toward the sun allowing its rays hit us more directly.

This gives us longer daylight and warmer weather.

Six months later, after we’ve orbited around to the other side of the sun, the Northern half of the Earth is then tilted away. The sun is now lower in the sky and its rays strike us at more of an angle. Because of this, we experience shorter days and the accompanying colder weather of winter.

If the Earth’s axis was not tilted, there would be 12-hour days everywhere, and no seasons.

At the equator the sun would always be directly overhead, and at the poles it would always remain on the horizon.

• The spring months are also known for producing severe weather. This occurs when warmer air invades the lower latitudes, while cold air pushes downward from the polar regions. The meeting of the two air masses produces extremely unstable conditions, usually resulting in severe storms.

Spring Training While major league baseball is in the midst of spring training and getting limbered up for the season ahead, here are some Tidbits to add to your bevy of baseball facts: • Spring training in Florida has been a major league baseball tradition since the beginning of the 1900s. During that time, local fans there have enjoyed close up looks at legends of the game, from Babe Ruth to Rogers Hornsby, Willie Mays and many others.

• The ritual of spring training games began in central Florida in October 1908, when there was a single exhibition game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Petersburg Saints.

A scheduled lineup of games didn’t begin until February 1913, when the Chicago Cubs arrived in Tampa for the area’s initial spring training.

• In 1913, only two teams trained in Florida, the Chicago Cubs, in Tampa, and the Cleveland Indians, in Pensacola. It wasn’t long before other teams began moving their spring training to the Sunshine State. By 1914, the Cubs and Indians were joined by the St. Louis Browns in St. Petersburg, the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Augustine and the Philadelphia Athletics in Jacksonville. They became known as the “Grapefruit League”.

• Spring training was halted altogether in Florida during World War II due to travel restrictions imposed by the U.S. government. Since commercial air travel was uncommon in those days, most travel was made by rail. In order to free up crucial space on railroad lines carrying troops and supplies during the War Years, teams were prohibited from training south of the Potomac and Ohio Rivers or west of the Mississippi. The cutoff was referred to as the “Potomac Line”.

• Baseball started in Arizona in the early 1900s as a spring training ground for minor league teams, but in 1946 the major leagues decided to take advantage of this warm climate as well. The Cleveland Indians were first to move to Arizona, but not before Indian’s owner Bill Veeck convinced New York Giants owner Horace Stoneham to do the same. The Indians came to Tucson; the Giants to Phoenix.

Q: I have a beautiful porcelain pitcher that

was given to my mother as a wedding gift in 1917. Enclosed is the mark on the bottom of the pitcher, which also includes the date “1916.”

The pitcher is 12 inches tall and decorated with grapes, flowers, leaves and a gold trim. It has a dragon-shaped handle and a scalloped top edge.

I think it is a Limoges original, but I don’t know for sure. Any assistance you can offer is much appreciated, and I hope you can give your best guesstimate as to its value.

My pal Idol died last week. He was 11.

We humans console ourselves and each other by saying things like, “Well, 11 is 77 in dog years.”

True, but that’s a mathematical conversion that does nothing to diminish my pain. It feels too short. Too soon. It feels that way in my heart and in my bones, but it wasn’t.

Idol was my big, beautiful boy. Whip-smart, playful and always there for me, it was my turn to go to bat for him. He was suffering from a degenerative spinal disease that left him unable to get up, unable to relieve himself. My wife and I made the decision to end his suffering. It wasn’t easy, but it was right.

We knew we were going to do it the next day, and you know tomorrow is going to come, so we said our goodbyes. My wife and I told Idol how much he meant to us, how much he had added to our lives.

Did he understand that? Not in our English terms.

But he felt our love. He knew.

The next day, we drove him to the veterinary clinic. We had discussed the whole thing with the vet beforehand. The procedure was painless. I held Idol’s head in my lap and told him how much I loved him, how much joy he gave me, how much he helped me.

And then I cried. Not like a baby, but like a grown man who had just lost his dog. That’s what we do when we lose someone we love. If love could be measured in tears, Idol would be pleased with himself. Then again, what makes dogs so special is that they don’t demand proof of love. They don’t quantify it or keep score or withhold theirs in an attempt to extort ours.

They simply give it and give it and give it, never once making the obvious judgment that only a fool would let it go unrealized. I’m proud to know this much of myself: I am no such fool.

I can practically track my life through all my dogs.

I can think of no milestone or special occasion that was not intrinsically linked to the canines in my life at the time. I’m ever grateful for the albums crammed with pictures of great dogs alongside growing kids, and for the videos that allow me to watch them run, bark and play, that will forever remind me of their voices, quirky habits and the funny faces they made.

In Idol’s case, I even kept a lock of his fur.

Someone you love can never live too long. And any dog owner will tell you they never live long enough.

Animal Contact Yields Better Health, Less Stress One of the worst parts of advancing age is the gradual loss of contact with those we love. As baby boomers, many of us first lose our children to college, then to spouses and ultimately to grandchildren.

As we age further, some of us will become frail, dependent on others for transportation and might need help with the simple tasks of daily life. One thing leads to another, and it becomes increasingly difficult to avoid loneliness and isolation. For many -- myself included -- it is vitally important to fill the empty nest with the unconditional love of a pet.

My wife and I are already empty nesters, and our beautiful French bulldog, Iggy Pup, has moved squarely to the center of our household. Iggy is a constant companion. We walk him, feed him, cuddle him and endlessly dote all over him. When I go on vacation, I miss Iggy almost as much as I miss my children! He is truly an integral part of my life. I have no doubt that Iggy’s unconditional love and the affection I shower on him assure me a better, less stressed and more healthful life.

The link between pets and health promotion is very clear. Many research studies show that contact with animals powerfully assists in improving the health of nursing home patients and hastens the recovery of hospitalized patients. Studies on individuals of all ages clearly show that 15 minutes of direct contact with a pet reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, slows heart rate, improves sleep and reduces the risk of depression.

For men and women, interacting with a pet fosters nurturing, rapport, socialization, entertainment and exercise. Recent studies show that people who walk with dogs exercise more consistently and experience bigger fitness results than those who walk with a two-legged friend. Dogs are more reliable, walk faster and can often be more convincing enthusiasts for the regular walk.

But the most important health benefit of a pet’s companionship is the physical contact and touch.

Contact with a dog or a cat is safe, soothing and nonthreatening. One stroke of a cat’s back or the touch of a cold puppy nose, and out of nowhere, unhappy patients smile, unwind and feel a deep sense of gratitude and contentment.

Pets of all kinds are particularly important to older people who live alone or who reside in nursing homes.

Published in Occupational Therapy International, recent research showed that contact with pets and the resulting companionship and sensory stimulation improved the ability of nursing home residents to socialize while decreasing stress, anger and disruptive behavior. In addition, pet therapy decreased the need for sedatives or medications to prevent agitation. Self-esteem, patient independence and increased responsibility were also noted.

Occupational and physical therapists found that pet therapy had many physical benefits for patients.

Muscle strength and range of movement improved, and pain management was more successful. Pets also reduced blood pressure and slowed heart rate.

As the healthful benefits of pets become more clear, many apartments, condominiums and assisted-living facilities are accepting animals. And

Our granddaughter, who is 17, and her fiance, 18, will graduate high school in June.

They have been “in love” for the past year and want to marr y upon graduation. We love them both, but we believe it is unrealistic and too soon. My husband and I have faced many tough years because we married too young. We were only able to sur vive because his parents had a small farm, which was our backup. Neither of their families is in a position to become their backup, nor are we. How can we share our experience with them?

Sometimes a Columnist is Right, and Social Security is Wrong Note to my readers: About 95 percent of working people in this country pay into Social Security. The other 5 percent are exempt from paying Social Security taxes for a variety of reasons. Among that small group are teachers in a handful of states like California, Texas -- and as we’ll learn in this week’s column -- Missouri.

And to help you understand what this column is talking about, you should know that a spouse can be due up to one-half of the primary earning spouse’s Social Security. For example, if I get $1,000 in a monthly Social Security retirement benefit, my wife is potentially due up to $500 per month as a dependent wife on my record.

Q:

I’m a retired teacher from Missouri. As you maybe know, most teachers in Missouri don’t pay into Social Security. I get about $5,000 per month from our teacher’s retirement system.

But my wife worked at a job where she did pay into Social Security. She gets about $1,200 in a monthly Social Security retirement benefit. Am I due any husband’s benefits on her record?

A:

No. The law treats your teacher’s pension as if it were a Social Security retirement pension. And Social Security retirement pensions have always offset spousal benefits. For example, my neighbor, Sam, gets $2,000 per month from Social Security. His wife, Nancy, also gets a Social Security benefit. Her rate is the same as your wife’s Social Security -- about $1,200 per month. Sam can’t receive a husband’s benefit on Nancy’s Social Security record because his own Social Security benefit offsets it dollar for dollar.

And for that matter, Nancy can’t get any benefits as a wife on Sam’s record because her $1,200 benefit is more than her potential spousal benefit.

The law, it’s called the “government pension offset,” actually cuts teachers like you a bit of slack. Instead of a dollar for dollar offset, teachers who receive pensions from jobs that were not covered by Social Security have a three for two offset. In other words, an amount equal to two-thirds of your teacher’s pension must be used to offset any husband’s benefits you might be due on your wife’s Social Security record.

Two-thirds of $5,000 is $3,300. And that is way more than the $600 you’d potentially be due from your wife’s Social Security account. So that means you are not due husband’s benefits from Social Security.

A SHORT TIME AFTER E-MAILING AN ANSWER TO THIS PERSON, HE SENT ME A FOLLOW-UP:

I actually had already applied for husband’s benefits from Social Security. And I

just received a letter from the Social Security Administration telling me I’m due about $600 per month in husband’s benefits. I just called their 800 number. A representative told me that if I got an official letter from them, then I must be due the money. What’s going on here?

They have cancelled my claim for benefits.

But now I wonder: If you had never told me to do this, would I have gotten Social Security benefits I wasn’t due for the rest of my life? (I don’t know if I should thank you or not!)

A:

The Social Security Administration matches their records with other retirement system’s computers. So somewhere down the road, SSA Senior Benefits computers and Missouri teacher’s retirement 1/16th page, 26x computers would have talked to each other. And Feb. 28 - Aug. 1, 2010 ♦ [Vol. 6: Issue #10 - #32] eventually SSA would have realized its mistake.

The actual number of elderly hoarders is unknown, but it’s thought that the numbers are astronomical.

In most cases, no one has any idea what’s going on inside the house or apartment -- unless rescue personnel or social services are called and ceilinghigh mounds of debris are discovered.

Why do seniors hoard? There are no simple answers, but here are a few: • To fill the void left by people who have been lost from their lives.

• Difficulty making decisions and organizing.

• Fear that something will become valuable later.

• Fear that something will be needed later.

• Fear of loss of control What hoarders keep is often incomprehensible to a non-hoarder: Plastic (food containers, grocery bags, laundry bottles, newspaper sleeves), books, empty jars, office supplies, broken jewelry, electronics and televisions that don’t work, catalogs, containers of coins, old things (shoes, clothing, purses, keys).

Clutter and hoarding are not the same. The biggest difference is in the willingness to get rid of things when offered help. A person who is a genuine hoarder will strongly resist assistance, will deny there’s a problem and often needs counseling to come to terms with the hoarding. Just cleaning out the debris of a hoarder doesn’t solve the problem. A hoarder will simply begin building up the clutter again in a very short time. It takes professional intervention to address the obsessive-compulsive mental-health issues involved.

Safety is a big issue with hoarding. Narrow pathways through rooms could keep emergency medical personnel from responding when help is required. Fire is a big risk, as are falls and mice or cockroaches. Avalanches of falling debris are not unheard of.

If you believe you have a problem, ask for help now. The first step is the hardest, but it’s easier than taking the chance of being removed from your home because it’s unsafe.

Production has begun on “The Social Network,” which stars Rashida Jones, Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenberg, and is directed by David Fincher (“Fight Club,” “Se7en,” “Panic Room” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”). Shelby Young (“Days of Our Lives” and “Wild Child”) recently finished shooting her supporting role in the film.

While she couldn’t tell me much about the movie or her role in it (they have all signed confidentiality agreements so the story doesn’t leak out), what she could tell me is that the movie is about the founders of the social-networking site Facebook. Earn Extra Cash With Flea Markets If you want to make some extra cash, investigate spring and summer flea markets. Whether it’s a onetime thing (perhaps to de-clutter) or as a potential source of ongoing income, flea markets have one thing that yard sales don’t: You’re likely to have many more people browsing through.

There’s quite a variety of flea-market venues.

Some are run every weekend, others once a month.

The size of spaces vary. Tables are frequently provided (for as little as $10 a day), and you bring a canopy, should you want one. Indoor locked venues will often let you leave your merchandise there overnight.

Here’s what to do in advance: • If you have a choice of locations for your table, check the traffic patterns of people walking through.

Where will you get the most passersby?

• Ask about setup and takedown times, limits on items that can be sold, and any discounts for paying in advance for multiple weekends.

• Note what the other vendors are selling and at what price. You’ll need to be competitive. Your pricing depends on what your intentions are: Do you want to de-clutter and make fast cash? Or do you want to set up a regular business?

• Decide whether you want to stick to one type of merchandise or put out a variety. You’ll find anything and everything at a flea market.

• Arrange for help. Have at least one other person at your booth or table to keep an eye on the cashbox, to make transactions and relieve you when needed.

• Gather your supplies: Among them should be Plastic bags, so your buyers can carry away their purchases; pricing stickers; pen and paper; tape to hang any posters; scissors, a table covering; a canopy, if needed; a chair; portable shelving -- for smaller items you don’t want on the table, change and small bills.

If you make enough money on a trial weekend, consider doing it on a regular basis. You’ll learn over time what items sell. Scout yard sales and businesses that are closing for items you can buy cheap and sell at a profit, or decide on a specific niche category and specialize in those items.
