Vintage Avon products are collectible. Alas, they are modestly priced, which can be disappointing.

Having said that, because they are not expensive, there are many people who can afford to collect Avon pieces. Collectors are listed on the Internet as well as information on buying and selling.

Most Avon collectibles from the 1970s are selling in the range of $10 to $25. Some pieces can go at higher prices.

Be Cheap With Yourself but Generous With Others Dear Mary: Recently, we were invited to celebrate my sister-in-law’s 50th birthday at an expensive restaurant. My brother informed us that he cannot afford to buy us dinner, so we will have to pay for our own meals. My husband and I would like to get the “birthday girl” a gift but feel a bit strange about the invitation. What is the proper response? -- Deborah S., Wisconsin Dear Deborah: Here’s a principle to live by: Be cheap with yourself but not with others. If going to this party would improve your relationship with your brother and his wife (even if it’s already great), that’s what you need to do.

If paying for your own dinner means not eating out for the next three months or skipping a couple of new outfits, that’s a small sacrifice for all the good this will do in the long run. Take a nice card and a small gift if you can swing it. If not, just being there and participating in a fabulous meal will be a wonderful gift. It will demonstrate your love and generosity.

By the way, these days I don’t think this is an unusual or strange invitation. I think we’re going to see a lot more of this kind of creativity as more and more people are facing tough times.

Dog owners got poop?

There have been a number of incidents in recent years in which humans have died -- or come close -when wild animals went wild.

February 2010 -- Tilikium, a 12,300-pound killer whale, attacked and killed 40-year-old trainer Dawn Brancheau during a live performance at SeaWorld’s Shamu Stadium in Orlando, Fla. February 2009 -- Travis, a 200-pound chimpanzee, became 71-year-old Sandra Herold’s roommate after retiring from television and commercial work.

In a rage, Travis tore off the face of Herold’s friend Charla Nash, sending her under the knife for a face transplant.

April 2008 -- Rocky, a 7-foot-tall grizzly and co-star of the Will Ferrel film “Semi-Pro,” killed one of his trainers with a single bite to the neck while filming in Big Bear Lake, Calif.

December 2007 -- Tatiana, a 243-pound Siberian tiger, escaped from her cage at the San Francisco Zoo and killed one visitor and injured two others. It was her second escape.

April 2007 -- Poabson Unnikrishnan, a full-grown elephant, went on a rampage during a ceremony in Kerala, India, when a spectator touched her tusk. At least three people were killed, including a trainer. At least 20 others were wounded.

September 2006 -- Australian television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin, “The Crocodile Hunter,” was killed when a venomous stingray barb pierced his heart while he was swimming over Batt Reef off the coast of Australia. At the time, Irwin was filming a documentary special with his 8-year-old daughter.

October 2003 -- This month brought the deaths of “Grizzly Man” Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard. After 13 months of living among the coastal grizzlies of Katmai National Park in Alaska, they were killed and partially eaten by the bears they considered family.

March 2002 -- Montecore, a 600-pound white Bengal tiger, sunk his teeth into the neck of Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy during a live performance at The Mirage hotel and casino in Las Vegas. The attack left Horn partially paralyzed, with a damaged neck artery and a crushed windpipe. In 2009, after a lengthy recovery period, the threesome amazed audiences by appearing together for one last show.

Study: Aspirin Lowers Return of Breast Cancer A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology showed that women with breast cancer who were taking a low dose of aspirin had a 46 percent lower risk of recurrent disease than those who did not take the easily accessible, over-thecounter medication.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School studied 4,164 nurses, ranging in age from 30 to 55 who developed breast cancer between 1976 and 2002. The participants were followed until 2006. Approximately half of the patients were taking aspirin to reduce their risk of heart disease.

Although the dose taken was not documented, the majority took the equivalent of one baby aspirin (81 milligrams) daily. Researchers were surprised to find that not only did the women taking aspirin have a lower risk of recurrence, but the risk of death from breast cancer was decreased as well.

Aspirin belongs to a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Motrin (ibuprofen), Aleve (naproxen) and Celebrex (celecoxib) are also NSAIDs. This type of drug is an analgesic used to relieve pain and to suppress the immune system -- an effect that is often employed to treat patients with inflammatory disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

At a low dose, aspirin also interferes with the ability of platelets to clump together, which has been shown to significantly reduce risk of heart attack and stroke. For patients at risk of heart disease, cholesterol deposits in arteries can increase the incidence of platelet clumping, an initial step in the development of a blood clot that can lead to heart attacks and stroke.

Interestingly, the benefits of aspirin on heart attack and stroke risk are much better in men than women, where aspirin has been shown to have little effect in those under 65 and only reduces stroke risk in women over 65 years of age.

Numerous studies have shown that NSAIDs appear to prevent the development of cancer. In the early 1970s, research revealed that taking NSAIDs suppressed the development of polyps in patients at high risk of colon cancer, and in some cases even caused polyps to regress. In another study, patients who had been diagnosed with polyps took aspirin to reduce the risk of recurrence. It has also been suggested that NSAIDs may reduce the risk of cancer of the esophagus, stomach, breast, prostate and lung.

However, NSAIDs have not been widely promoted as cancer-combating medications because the research has not been 100 percent positive. In 1996, a clinical trial called the Physicians’ Health Study found that taking aspirin did not reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Nearly a decade later, a study published in Journal of the American Medical Association followed thousands of women participating in the Women’s Health Study. This study found that aspirin did not prevent the development of breast cancer.

While the final word on NSAIDs is not in, the evidence seems to indicate that aspirin may have a protective effect against cancer. Consequently, it is appropriate that, irrespective of age, anyone at high risk of or diagnosed with breast, colon, prostate or lung cancer should take 81 milligrams of aspirin daily. The other NSAIDs may also be effective in reducing cancer risk, but they should not be used as

Fault belongs to the partners, not the parents Q: Recently I angrily blamed my husband

when our daughter called to tell us her husband was asking for a divorce. Now he is not speaking to me. He never liked our sonin-law, and before their marriage he tried to talk our daughter out of going through with the wedding. Now our daughter has two small kids, no job and no husband. We are being forced to step in and help out. Fortunately, we have the resources to do this, but what can I do now to repair my relationship with my husband?

They get together frequently, and enjoy each other’s company. However, I innocently overheard him talking with his buddies about another lady he is also seeing a couple of hundred miles away. A: What do you think his intentions are toward

your friend? Are they really deeply involved or is theirs mostly a casual companionship?

I’m sure their relationship meets some sort of need for each of them. Sometimes, after living alone for a long period, individuals become afraid of taking risks or making commitments. We all understand what we need, but communicating it to a partner can be difficult.

After bringing out the facts, each partner has the choice of accepting the relationship as it exists or breaking if off. Monogamy may not even be what either of them wants. It takes two to make a relationship. She may already know and simply does not want to give up what they have going.

I vote for telling her. If your friend is not aware of the other lady it’s time for her to discuss her future with this gentleman. They need to bring out into the open what both of their intentions and expectations are. Every relationship should be based on truth, trust, honesty and open communication. If each partner does so, it will strengthen them both. It’s their call. Character really counts.

The news spelled dynamite, and you both exploded. It sounds like his anger is directed more at your daughter’s situation than at you, but that doesn't help the comfort level in your home. Whose fault is the divorce? Not yours or your husband’s.

The fault belongs to the marriage partners.

Now the issue is acceptance, and how you handle it. Apologize to your husband and admit that you were wrong in attacking him that way. Admitting that you were wrong shows strength and maturity on your part. This is not a time to dwell on whose fault it was. What’s done is done!

Your daughter is distraught and needs help from both of you now. Those grandchildren need you, too. Focus on the issues, not the personalities. The issue is we need to love our families even when they experience serious consequences even though we may have forewarned them of the danger.

Move forward, hug and kiss your daughter and grandchildren and do the best you can for them.

That’s what families are for!

Disability Benefits for Widows But Not for Wives Q:

My mother is 60 and disabled. She never worked or paid Social Security taxes.

She was married to my father for many years, but he died a long time ago. She remarried, and the marriage lasted 15 years before they got a divorce. That man is 65 years old and still working. He’s a lawyer and makes a good living.

Mom spent many hours filling out disability forms and has all kinds of documentation from doctors indicating she is disabled. She took them to the Social Security office to file for benefits as a disabled ex-wife of the lawyer.

They told her filling out the forms was a waste of time. They said all she is due is a small widow’s pension from my dad’s Social Security record.

Because they were married for over 10 years, why can’t she get disability benefits from her well-to-do second husband?

The Medicare premium withheld from your Social Security check pays for the Part B section of the program. Part B generally covers doctor visits, lab fees and other medical expenses. By the way, that Part B premium covers only 25 percent of the program’s costs. The rest of Medicare Part B funding comes from general revenues.

So, you really weren’t the victim of “double withholding.” Again, each deduction is paying for a different part of Medicare.

Have you ever checked if you really need the Part B of Medicare? As a general rule, if you are working and covered by your employer’s health insurance, you don’t need Medicare Part B -- meaning you could be saving $96.40 per month if you drop that coverage.

And later, when you retire and lose your employer’s regular insurance coverage, you can reapply for Part B and won’t pay any penalties that usually go along with delayed enrollment in the program.

I get a small Social Security pension that is offset by a federal disability pension that I receive. Could you look up my records and tell me what the full amount of my Social Security would be if it were not for the federal pension?

A: No, I can’t do that. Every once in a while, I

She can’t get disability from her second husband because there is no Social Security coverage for a disabled wife -- or ex-wife. (There is coverage for disabled widows, but not for disabled wives.) Given your mom’s age and lack of her own Social Security coverage, the fact that your mom is disabled is not an issue for Social Security purposes. Let’s review your mom’s options.

She will never be eligible for any kind of Social Security on her own record, including disability benefits, because she never worked and paid into the system.

Because she was married to husband number two for more than 10 years, she is potentially due benefits on his record, but not until she is at least 62 years old. At that point, she would be due about onethird of his basic Social Security benefit, if that pays a higher rate than what she’s due on your father’s record.

Because she is 60 years old, your mother is currently due reduced widow’s benefits on your father’s Social Security account. The rate would be about 70 percent of your father’s basic Social Security benefit.

As I mentioned above, there is Social Security coverage for disabled widows. But the rate payable to her as a disabled widow is the same (70 percent) as what she’s due based solely on her age. So, there is no point in filing for disability benefits.

Just remember that when she turns 62, she should check into divorced wife’s benefits from husband number two. Or, if he dies, she should apply for divorced widow’s benefits on his record.

Fight Depression With Exergames It can be a vicious cycle: Depression can cause a lack of interest in physical activity, yet physical activity can help alleviate depression. How do we motivate ourselves to be active when we just don’t want to? There might be a solution right in our nearest electronics store: The Nintendo Wii games.

The Nintendo Wii Sports was designed to get young people up off the floor -- where they sit with remote controls in their hands -- and get them doing something physically active. However, a new study has shown that the very same games can help seniors become more active. The University of California San Diego School of Medicine used the Wii Sports games (golf, boxing, tennis, bowling and baseball) on test participants. One-third of them reported that their depression was at least 50 percent better by the end of the study.

Nintendo also has a Wii Fit Plus package, and it’s much more comprehensive than the basic Sports. It lets you weigh in, take body fitness tests, record your results, tells you how many calories you’re burning and lets you customize your own workout, including exercise you’ve done away from the Wii. The game includes balance, strength, yoga, aerobics and training.

Think of the positives: You get to do it indoors, so weather isn’t a factor. You play with others. It has a one-time cost. It’s fun.

There is another potential benefit to the Wii games, specifically tennis and Cooking Mama: A very short study showed that those who’ve had a stroke were able to cut the amount of time it takes to do everyday activities after playing the Wii games.

Ask your doctor if he or she thinks the exercise games in Wii would benefit you. And then, ask your local seniors center if they’ll purchase one for group use!

Last-Minute Tax Savings If you’re still working on your taxes and looking for some last minute deductions to reduce your tax bill, here are a few to consider: State taxes: If you paid state taxes for the year 2008 when you filed last year, you can deduct that amount from your Federal return.

Property tax: Until recently, only those taxpayers who itemize deductions (Schedule A) could deduct their property tax. Now, even if you take the standard deduction, you can deduct some or all of the property tax you paid in 2009. There’s a limit, however. You can deduct the amount that is lower: the taxes you paid, or up to $500 for single or $1,000 for filing jointly.

Charitable deductions: If you tend to save all your receipts, it could be worth your while to look for those related to charity. You can deduct your expenses for quite a number of things: the cost of ingredients for the cakes and pies you baked, mileage at 14 cents per mile, postage for mailings, and more.

Home improvements: If you made energysaving improvements to your home, you can deduct part of the cost. Windows, water heaters, doors and more are included. (Unfortunately this doesn’t apply to everyday appliances such as dishwashers and refrigerators.) Each item has a different limit on how much can be deducted. Go online to www. energystar.gov and scroll down to Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency. Read the particulars on your appliance or energy-saving product. You’ll need IRS Form 5695 as well as your receipts and the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement to send in with your Form 1040.

Home purchase: If you bought your first home in 2009 before Nov. 7, you could be eligible for a credit of up to $8,000. If you are a repeat buyer who purchased a home after Nov. 7, 2009, and who will close on a house by July 1, you could be eligible for a credit up $6,500 if you’ve lived in your home for at least five years. This government program has changed since it was first started in 2008 with a $7,500 interest-free loan to first-time homebuyers. If you’ve bought a home at during that time, check to see if you qualify.
