AN EYE OUT FOR FOOD

• As a member of the Anableps fish family, the “Four-Eyed Fish” is so-called for its curiously divided eyeballs. But despite the name, it doesn't actually have four eyes. Instead, the eyes are specially adapted for its surface-dwelling lifestyle, which makes it exceptionaly vulnerable for predatory fish-eating birds. The eyes are split horizontally into two sections by a band of tissue.

The following letter from a reader demonstrates that it is certainly the chief occupation of those who champion the companionship of a particular canine at any cost.

“We recently got an 8-month-old yellow lab from a family with three small children. The lady said the dog could be aggressive and had nipped at her 2-year-old.

“She is a very nervous puppy -- jumps at the slightest movement or noise. She also jumps and twitches when she sleeps. We have experienced her aggression now, and it is quite scary. The second morning we had her, something spooked her and she would not let us near our truck. The doors were all open, and she sat in the driver’s seat growling and showing her teeth. I got a treat and put it on the ground near us. When I said “release,” she got out, snatched the treat and jumped right back in. She calmed down, but was nervous all day after that.

“She has showed her teeth a few times, and we’re not sure how to handle it. I read that it isn’t always good to approach or discipline her when she is showing her teeth and growling because it could initiate an attack. I know that she is scared and confused. Within one week she stayed in four different houses, with all new people. We’ve had her for a week, and we’d love to keep her. We have no children, but we have nieces and nephews around often. We need to break her of these aggressive behaviors or we will not be able to run the risk of her hurting a child.

“She is a good dog -- excellent when playing fetch, gives up the ball or toy every time. However, she gets aggressive with some of her toys when indoors. We gave her a pig’s ear last night and she got extremely aggressive. Every time we moved, she growled and showed her teeth -- even when we were nowhere near her. She came out of it, but again she was nervous for the rest of the night.”

Working While Getting Disability Benefits Q:

I am 57 years old and getting Social Security disability benefits. I understand I can work and make $46,000 and still keep my disability checks. But how much can I make when I reach age 62?

A:

I’m afraid you’ve really got things mixed up. The $46,000 figure you cite applies to retirees in the year they turn age 66. And nothing is going to change when you turn 62. So let me back up.

The only reason you are getting disability benefits in the first place is because you have been deemed to be unable to work. Or to put that another way, you are not getting Social Security disability just because you have a physical or mental impairment. You are getting those benefits because that impairment keeps you from working. That inability to work is the key to your eligibility for disability benefits.

So, on the one hand, you shouldn’t be working at all. On the other hand, there are all kinds of work incentives built into the disability program that allow you to try working while still collecting your disability checks -- at least for a while.

Those incentive provisions fill up about a 100-page book that the Social Security Administra-

tion produces. So there is no way I can explain all of them to you in this column. But I can summarize the main provisions.

As a general rule, you can work for up to nine months, making as much money as you can, and still keep getting your benefits. However, after those nine months, if you are still working and if you are making more than about $1,200 per month, there is a pretty good chance your disability checks will stop. If you want more information, go to http://www.socialsecurity.gov and under the “Publications” link look for the pamphlet called, “Working While Disabled -- How We Can Help.” It is an abbreviated version of that 100-page book I mentioned earlier.

Many people getting disability benefits, and apparently you, too, think that something happens with your Social Security checks when you turn age 62. That’s wrong. However, when you reach your full retirement age, which would be 67 in your case, you will be automatically switched from the disability program to the retirement program. But the money amount you are getting stays the same; your disability benefit rate equals your full retirement age benefit rate.

What will change once you reach age 67 is your ability to work. At that point, you will be considered a retiree and not a disabled person. And someone at full retirement age can work and earn as much as he or she can without losing any Social Security benefits.

So, having explained all that, let me decipher your questions. You said you are getting “SDDI.” There is no such thing. My hunch is that you are getting SSDI, or Social Security disability benefits. And then you asked when you can “go on regular SSI.” I’m sure you meant to be asking when your disability benefits will be converted to retirement benefits. And as I explained in the previous answer, that will happen automatically when you reach your full retirement age.

How do I get a ticket to work?

A:

The Ticket to Work program is just one of the many work incentive provisions built into the SSDI and SSID programs. It is way too complicated to explain in this column. And to be honest, I don’t fully understand how it works myself. But I can steer you to someone who does.

I am getting SDDI. When can I go on regular SSI?

You’re mixing up your acronyms, and so, I’m afraid, you’re mixing me up, too. As I explained in the prior answer, there are two different disability programs. The Social Security disability program is sometimes known as SSDI. That stands for Social Security disability insurance. And confusingly, the Supplemental Security Income disability program is often shortened into SSID.

And to further complicate this alphabet soup mess, many people think that “SSI” stands for Social Security income. Again, it doesn’t. It stands for that federal welfare program called Supplemental Security Income.

What Is a Healthy Room Temperature?

DEAR DR. ROACH: The senior center in my community is kept at a temperature that I and many other seniors find too cool for our comfort. After two hours of playing Scrabble or watching a film, we feel chilled to the bone. We have complained many times to the management, with no change. Recently, I overheard an employee explain to a complainer that the center maintains the cool temperature to keep the germ count in the air down in order to promote a healthy environment. I know very warm temperatures can promote germ growth (anyone in Bacteriology 101 has seen it proven), but would raising the temperature from 72 F to 75 F have any bad effect on the air quality? -- H.L.

ANSWER: In bacteriology, most of what we did was in incubators at 37 degrees Celsius (about 99 degrees F), an optimal growth temperature for most pathogenic bacteria in or on a growth medium. However, I was surprised to find that hotter temperatures, in general, tend to reduce both viruses and bacteria in the air. So there’s no validity to the employee’s claim.

The people controlling the temperature (the staff) probably are more comfortable at a cooler temperature than the seniors taking advantage of the senior center (there are many reasons for this). Your suggestion of 75 F seems a perfectly reasonable temperature to me, but maybe it’s worth finding out what most of the community wants.

Physicians need to decide for themselves how comfortable they are in treating chronic conditions without seeing their patients for a prolonged period. His method ensures very regular follow-up, and he is likely to find changes to your condition more quickly than if he wrote yearly prescriptions. On the other hand, many people don’t need such close follow-up, and it is significantly less convenient for many.

Crooks Plead Guilty in Rent-a-Vet Scheme

Two crooks pleaded guilty to stealing money from the government in a set-aside program for veteran-owned businesses. Specifically, these two got nearly $14 million in construction contracts (20 of them) spread out in 11 states over nine years.

Both were veterans.

In 2004, Jeffrey Wilson and Paul Salavitch set up the Patriot Company. Wilson ran the whole thing as a front for his own construction company.

Salavitch, the service-disabled veteran, didn’t run the company, make day-to-day decisions, had never managed a construction company and didn’t have much government contracting experience -- all requirements for the program. He was president on paper only. His pal Wilson said they needed stuff from Salavitch (plaques, Army items, anything personal) that would make one of the offices look like it actually belonged to Salavitch.

What, then, did Salavitch do? He was a fulltime employee of the Department of Defense in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Wilson, meanwhile, had fun with some of the money. He put down nearly half a million dollars on a house he bought, and a quarter of a million to pay off his previous house. Not only that, but he used company money to buy another house out of state and paid $400,000 for life insurance premiums.

Patriotic Pitcher Was an Inspiration Q:

The pitcher in this photo caught my attention in a junk store in Dallas, Texas, many years ago, probably in the 1950s. It was in the present damaged condition when I bought it, and I’m sure it is worth little or no money at all. My interest is purely curiosity.

Marked on the bottom is a globe with the word “Grimades.” Above the mark are the words “Made By The Girls Of Staffordshire During The Winter of 1917/18 When The ‘Boys’ Were In The Trenches Fighting For Liberty & Civilization.”

Who were the girls of Staffordshire, and why did they have the pitchers made? Perhaps they sold them as souvenirs, or as fundraising for a patriotic cause?

It is decorated with a scene Grimwades pitcher decorated with of two solpatriotic theme. diers in a foxhole in wartime. In case you cannot read the print under the foxhole scene, it says, “Well, if you knows of a better ‘ole, go to it.”

The name “Bruce Bairnsfather” is signed near the lower right hand of the foxhole picture.

Grimwades Ltd. made your earthenware pitcher. The pottery was founded in 1900 in Stoke, Staffordshire, England, by Edward and Sidney Grimwades. By 1913, Grimwades operated five factories and was one of the largest producers of earthenware in the Staffordshire region.

The girls of Staffordshire were the women who worked in the pottery and decorated the ware.

The scene is a transfer print and was based on the English humorist artist Bruce Bairnsfather’s cartoons featuring soldiers of World War I. His inspirational cartoons appeared on teapots, flower pots, sugar bowls, pitchers and plates. Grimwades Ltd.

I have drawn the mark that is on the bottom of a porcelain cup and saucer my late husband bought for his mother when he was in the ser vice in the 1940s. The cup is 2 inches tall, and the saucer is 4 inches in diameter. The pair is decorated with the image of a man and woman, and trimmed with gold.

The crossed-swords mark you provided can be problematic. In 1725, the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, located in Saxony, Germany, marked porcelain with crossed swords. For over 200 years, a plethora of factories has used versions of the original mark. The mark appears on pieces today. When in doubt, consult an appraiser with a background in Meissen porcelain.

Your circa 1940s cup and saucer would probably be worth $25 to $50.
