Detergents with enzymes usually cost more than those without.

Typically, liquid detergents are more expensive and work better on greasy stains, but the cheaper powdered detergents are better on clay, dirt and mud stains.

Both liquid detergent and liquid bleach will get a boost and work better if you add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the wash cycle, which means it’s possible you’ll be able to use less detergent. This is only cost-effective when your soda products are less per ounce than the detergent.

And now for my super-duper laundry detergent savings secret: I make my own laundry detergent for about a nickel a load. Old Man Winter

Brrrr! Unless you're fortunate enough to either live or winter in Hawaii or Southern California, you've been huddled in your ear muffs and woolies this winter. Over half the country is being brutalized by cold weather, and unfortunately it looks like it’s going to be long-term. Spring will come eventually, but meanwhile we need to take care of ourselves, our homes and our pets. Let's look at some precautions we can take to help us survive this unusually nasty winter:

 If you run a space heater, be sure it's the type with a safety button that automatically shuts it off if the unit gets tipped over. Even if you have one with this safety device, don’t leave it unattended. If you leave the room, turn it off.

 Even if you live in an apartment building, beware any sink, tub or shower that is on an outside wall. If that's the case and the outside temperature falls well below freezing, try to keep the faucets slightly open to keep a trickle of water running through the pipes. Moving water does not freeze so easily.

OURSELVES

 If you have to go out in the cold, dress yourself in layers. Don’t forget hat, gloves and thick scarf.

 If the worst happens and your pipes do freeze, never try to thaw them out with any device that involves a flame. It’s time to call in reinforcements, like your plumber. Don't wait to do this. Hard frozen pipes can easily burst and cause major problems, especially if they are inside the wall.

 Know in advance where the closest warming shelters are in your town. Keep a radio handy, plus batteries, for weather news. Carry a tiny flashlight in your pocket at all times, in case the power goes- 3-10-2013 out.

But if a person were really concerned about the welfare of their pet, they would recognize problem behavior for what it is. If your dog is a biter, odds are good that ignoring the problem will only make things worse for everyone in the long run -- including the dog.

We live in truly interesting times. A friend sent me a snapshot taken over the weekend. The photograph was of an elderly nanny pushing a stroller along a sidewalk in Beverly Hills. Inside the stroller: a dog. I can only wonder what became of the child.

My mother told me she remembers a time when women had to “live in sin” (those are her words) to avoid losing Social Security benefits. She couldn’t elaborate, but she thinks some senior women still have to do that today. Do you know what she is talking about?

A:

Yes, I know exactly what she is talking about. It has to do with the payment of Social Security widow’s benefits. And it makes a good story about how Social Security and politics can make strange bedfellows.

I have to start out by explaining the thinking behind widow’s benefits. They, along with other payments available to wives (and to a much lesser extent, husbands) and minor children, fall under the broad category of “auxiliary and survivor benefits.” These are benefits payable to the dependents of someone getting a Social Security retirement or disability check, or to the survivors of a worker who has died.

And the concept of “dependency” is a key qualifying factor. In other words, a potential auxiliary or survivor beneficiary must prove that she or he was financially dependent on the primary spouse or parent.

In order to keep people from having to present all kinds of personal and financial records as part of the application process, the law provides short cuts to help prove dependency. For example, with only a few exceptions, children are essentially deemed to be dependent on a parent with whom they are living.

And in the case of a spouse, the law assumes the person with the lower Social Security benefit was probably financially dependent on the person with the higher Social Security benefit.

For example, let’s say Tom is 66 and getting $2,100 per month from Social Security. His 62-yearold wife, Becky, is due $700 in her own monthly retirement benefits. Because Becky has the lower Social Security benefit, she is presumed to be financially dependent on Tom and thus qualifies for spousal benefits on his record. On the other hand, Tom, with the much higher Social Security retirement check, could not be considered financially dependent on Becky.

Now some of you might be saying: “What about all those guys who are claiming husband’s benefits on their lower-earning wife’s Social Security account while saving their own retirement benefits until age 70?” That is the much-touted “file and restrict” maximizing strategy. That strategy grew out of a loophole in some Social Security amendments passed in the 1990s. And that loophole made a mockery of that basic Social Security tenet that said a husband or wife must be financially dependent on his or her partner to qualify for spousal benefits. Once officials in Washington realized this, they closed the loophole. it. Anyone turning 66 after January 2020 can no longer employ that unintended and misguided strategy.

Beware Use of Prevagen for Alzheimer’s Disease

DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please discuss the use of Prevagen for Alzheimer’s disease? My chiropractor wants me to take it because my mother had Alzheimer’s. She says her father is doing well and not progressing. What do jellyfish have to cause this result? I have not seen any research from medical facilities that back this up. -- L.C. ANSWER: I could not find any peerreviewed literature that supports the use of Prevagen for Alzheimer’s disease or other neurological disease. The manufacturer has unpublished data on its website that suggests there may be a benefit in memory. There is also a study in rats that suggests the active protein, apoaequorin, may protect nerve cells against loss of glucose and oxygen. This protein was originally identified from luminescent jellyfish but is made synthetically in Prevagen. The rat research result is surprising, since proteins are normally broken down in the GI tract, and would not be expected to have activity in the brain.

There are reports made to the Food and Drug Administration of serious adverse events from this product. A supplement is not required to show its benefit; in fact, the product information for Prevagen clearly states that it is “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.”

ANSWER: The fecal occult blood test uses an enzyme that causes a color change in the presence of heme, a component of hemoglobin, the major protein in blood. Although the fecal blood results are pretty accurate, they can be erroneous in two ways: a false positive and a false negative.

A false positive means the stool test is positive when there is no blood. This can happen from eating raw vegetables (many types, especially turnips and radishes) and meat. A false negative can happen in the presence of large amounts of vitamin C, but more importantly, many lesions of the colon, including colon cancer, bleed only intermittently.

In my opinion, someone with a history like yours, including precancerous polyps and a family history of colon cancer, should have a colonoscopy as the screening test rather than stool cards.

Raking In the Cash With Phony Relocations

While Department of Veterans Affairs chief David Shulkin is doing a good job, there is one place he needs to focus his laser gaze: Relocations and the cash paid out to those who move within the VA ... and those who pocket the money.

A recent VA Office of the Inspector General report details -- on many pages, covering many years -- how one VA employee managed to get piles of money in a relocation that he never made.

Let’s call him Dr. A. Years ago, Dr. A applied for a VA job clear across the country. He was paid nearly $20,000 for Temporary Quarters allowance.

His boss approved the change of position.

Furthermore, Dr. A’s salary was dramatically increased because different geographical regions have varying base salaries depending on the cost of living.

But Dr. A never moved. He stayed where he was, at the heftier salary, and telecommuted.

Basically, he phoned it in. He did put in two days a week at his home location, while supposedly, on paper, living on the other coast. This went on for over three years.

When the jig was finally up, Dr. A claimed not to know he’d been given nearly $20,000 in relocation money (all of it within one month). His wife thought it was his annual bonus.

Technically he was assigned to the other coast, where he also supposedly lived. How then could he claim travel money for traveling to his own home? During the time he was living on one coast and claiming to live on the other, Dr. A also made dozens of trips on the government dime. The VAOIG, as of this writing, has handed it back to the VA with recommendations.

Dr. A owes the government a lot of money.

Unfortunately, he’s likely not the only VA employee deceitfully cashing in this way.

We are not sure how old it really is and don’t know anything about its histor y. Over the years, it has been used on special occasions, and it is in remarkably good condition.

Ford Fairlane Model Car Is a Convertible

This is a photo of a metal diecast pink-and-white toy car that I have. It is a 1955 Ford Fairlane convertible model. The doors, hood and trunk all can be opened; the tires are rubber; it is a 1:18 scale model; and the steering wheel turns the wheels. It measures 11 inches long by 3 1/4 inches high by 5 inches wide. Although I don’t have the original box, the car is in perfect condition.

Marked on the side are the words “Ford Fairlane -- Crown Victoria.” Marked on the bottom are the words “Road Tough -- Made in China -- 92138.’

What can you tell me about my car?

Edward Clarke made ironstone ware in England.

A:

Edward Clarke and Co. made your tureen. It was located in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England, from 1865 to 1887. The mark you enclosed was used on white granite (ironstone) ware that was made for the United States market. The starsand-stripes shield in the mark represents the United States; the shield is the royal arms of the United Kingdom. “Opaque Porcelaine” indicates the ware is made of white granite.

Your tureen was made between 1856 and 1877. It would probably be worth $125 to $150.

China-based Road Tough made metal die-cast toy cars for 30 years.

A: Road Tough has made metal die-cast cars in China for around 30 years. It produced Fords, Chryslers and several other makes. Crown Victoria is the name of one of Ford's cars that was introduced in 1955 and retired in 2011. For a time, Crown Victoria models were used as police-fleet cars. The number “92138” is a Road Tough model number. The convertible is also known as the Sunliner.

HIGH-FLYING HELIUM

• In 2008, Brazilian priest Adelir Antônio de Carli decided to raise money for his parish by hitching a seat and harness to several hundred heliumfilled party balloons. He was an experienced skydiver and was equipped with a parachute, helmet, waterproof coveralls, GPS device, mobile phone, satellite radio, floation gear, thermal flight suit and a supply of energy bars and drinking water. However, he miscalculated how high he would actually go. Once released, his ascent carried him upwards to extremely cold and thin air at nearly 20,000 feet. At that altitude he quickly experienced severe oxygen deprivation and lost consciousness. His ground crew tried unsuccessfully to contact him as strong and unexpected winds carried him out to sea. His remains were found floating in the water several months later.
