The situation: You are in desperate need of a vacation.

As worthy a question as the deliberations of Hamlet. In order to avoid all that Shakespearean bloodshed, let’s break it down:

-- Where are you going and what will you be doing?

If you’re going camping, a dog’s a great companion. If you’re going skiing, a dog is destined for substantial time alone in the lodge. Why not leave him at home with a dog sitter?

-- Does the place where you’d like to stay allow dogs?

If not, the choice is made for you. But even if they do, most places that welcome dogs do so on the condition that they are supervised at all times on the property. So be prepared to have a canine tagalong for all of your activities, or plan ahead to arrange daytime boarding in the area.

-- How long will you be gone?

If you’re taking a yearlong sabbatical and renting a chateau in Paris, consider bringing le chien. If you’re escaping for the weekend, entice a buddy to dog-sit and camp at your pad for a couple of days -- fill the fridge with their favorite food and drink, and leave an envelope on the counter with detailed instructions, contact information and a little something for their trouble. If you’re going away for a week or two, a kennel might be your best bet. Plan ahead. Do some research. Take your dog in for a visit and a tour. It’s the little extras that will put your mind at ease.

But if it’s a dog-friendly vacation or bust, here’s a checklist of necessities:

An Apology -- 25 Years Later

I just got an email that absolutely floored me. Honestly, it even brought a lump to my throat.

It has to do with something that happened about 25 years ago, while I was working for the Social Security Administration in San Diego, California.

Frankly, it was a rather routine occurrence for me back then, and still is today. Let me explain -- and then we will get to this guy’s email.

For almost 50 years now, I have been making speeches and other presentations to large and small groups around the country about Social Security. For most of those years, I was doing so as an official representative of SSA. But I retired from SSA in 2005, and for the past 13 years I’ve been freelancing as a private Social Security consultant.

I’d guess that at more than half the presentations I make, someone in the audience gets up on their soapbox and starts ranting and raving about Social Security. Or rather, as they so often cleverly put it (at least in their own minds), “Social Insecurity.” They go on and on about how the program is a government boondoggle, a sham, a Ponzi scheme, a fraud, a rip-off, a liberal hoax and yadda yadda yadda! If they are younger, they always say they are convinced the program will be broke before they ever collect a dime in benefits. If they are older,

This is a photo of a lamp that I would like to know more about. It is one of a pair that was purchased by my parents between 1953 and 1957 in the Newark, New Jersey, area. The lamps are approximately 32 inches tall. They appear to be blown etched frosted glass with a design outlined in gold overlay.

The stylized peacocks and flowers are decorated with tones of turquoise and blue.

Franz Anton Mehlem made your Royal Bonn vase. Mehlem founded his factory in Bonn, Germany, in 1836. It made earthenware and porcelain. In 1890, the words “Royal Bonn” were added.

Mehlem also produced porcelain cases for mantel clocks. The mark with the words “Royal Bonn,” a crown and the initials “FM” in a shield was used from 1890 to 1920. In 1921, Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach, Germany, bought the factory. Franz Anton Mehlem closed in 1931.

Your vase is shelfworthy! It was made around 1900 and would probably be worth $125 to $150. You might consider insuring it for $200 to $225.
