• The world-famous San Diego Zoo got its start at the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, a World’s Fair that celebrated the opening 1. of the Panama Canal. When the Exposition closed, the exotic animal exhibitions were abandoned and the creatures were claimed for a new zoo at Balboa Park.

• Additional animals were purchased from a bankrupt amusement park near the Pacific Ocean known as Wonderland. The amusement park, the first of its kind in the area, featured the largest roller coaster on the West Coast, a carousel, water slide, skating rink, and bowling alley. I hope you understand the deal you are getting because of the Government Pension Offset law. If you had been getting Social Security retirement instead of a teacher’s retirement, you would get zero dollars in widow’s benefits. But with the GPO law, you will get $634 per month.

What has always puzzled me is how so many teachers and other government employees have worked themselves into lather over the government pension offset law. They are constantly demanding that it be repealed because they think they are being cheated out of benefits that everyone else gets. When in actuality, the law offers them benefits that most other Americans can’t get.

This is one of two offset laws that get government employees so riled up. The other law is called the Windfall Elimination Provision. Many people who spend the bulk of their careers working at jobs not covered by Social Security have spent some time at other jobs where Social Security taxes were deducted from their paychecks. If they do that for at least 10 years, they will qualify for a small Social Security retirement check. And the WEP law reduces that even further.

Those impacted by this law think they are being singled out for Social Security reductions that no one else must endure. This is a photo of several dishes in a set of china that I inherited. The set is a ser vice for 12 and includes ser ving bowls, two covered bowls, platters, a gravy boat with attached tray, a cream pitcher, a sugar bowl and salt and pepper shakers. Each piece is marked the letters “H -- J -- Co” and is in perfect condition. The dishes are decorated with multicolored birds on a branch along with colorful blossoms.

I would appreciate any information you can provide about the name and location of the maker, the year of manufacture and the value of my dinner set.

Weller Pottery made your “Dickensware” vase. The pottery was founded by Samuel Weller in Fultonham, Ohio, in 1872. It moved to Zanesville, Ohio, in 1882. The Dickensware line was created by Weller art director Charles Babcock Upjohn. There were three distinct lines. The caramel matte glaze that graduates to blue green, the sgraffito (incised lines) and the image of the golfer are characteristic of the second line. Weller made a male golfer that is a companion piece to your vase.

The second line also featured Native Americans, animals, monks and Charles Dickens characters.

Your vase is circa 1900 and would probably be worth $800 to $1200.
