DEAR DR. ROACH: About three years ago, I was walking from the parking lot to church (not a long distance) and was overcome with a feeling of warmth and weakness throughout my body. I almost dropped my purse, but it stopped almost immediately.

About three weeks ago, the same thing happened. I did not feel ill, and it passed almost as fast as it came on. I am 65 years old, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. I have yearly checkups and blood tests.

After looking over my yearly bloodwork, which we do at work, my white blood cell count is usually low, according to my hematologist. He had me do a total body X-ray and several blood tests over a three-month period and found nothing wrong with me. I did not mention the above to him. Can you tell me what can possibly be going on in my body? -- A.N. ANSWER: Since it has happened only twice in three years, and since you have had an evaluation without finding anything, it may just be one of those things that happens that we don’t get an answer to. In fact, I think that is the most likely outcome.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, and have been bothered by frequent urination for many years. My urologist was constantly recommending a surgical procedure, and was performing diagnostic tests to determine what I already knew -- that I do not void fully. I sometimes must urinate three to four times at night. I have not seen this urologist for more than two years. My question is: What are the risks of doing nothing? I was on Flomax and found it to be of no benefit. -- W.B. ANSWER: Difficulty urinating is a common problem for older men, and for many men, the symptoms themselves make them want to be treated. It sounds like you are asking if there might be additional downsides besides the symptoms.

The major risk is that there might be a cancer, especially of the prostate, so seeing the urologist to look for cancer is important. Prolonged blockage occasionally leads to kidney damage, if the blockage is severe enough for long enough. Finally, having “stale” urine in the bladder predisposes you to infection. If your doctor finds you have good kidney function, no cancer and no infection, you don’t need to get treated. That being said, there are other treatments besides Flomax that might help your symptoms.

However, whenever I hear about warmth all over the body, I worry about conditions that cause a release of substances that act on the blood vessels. Carcinoid syndrome and pheochromocytomas are two rare conditions that can cause a temporary flushing sensation, and you certainly should mention this to your doctor. Neither of them is likely, but you don’t want to miss either possibility.

PTSD Lawsuit Seeks Honorable Discharges

Some 22,000 Iraq/Afghanistan veterans have been discharged with less than honorable ratings due to misconduct. It’s estimated that 20 percent of Iraq veterans have PTSD, along with 11 percent of Afghanistan veterans. Misconduct often goes hand in hand with PTSD as the veteran struggles to keep a balance.

A recent class-action lawsuit by Yale Law School’s Veterans Legal Services Clinic seeks to address the failure of the Army Discharge Review Board to do as they were instructed in 2014: give special consideration to appeals to upgrade the discharge levels of veterans with PTSD, per instruction from then-Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel.

Part of the lawsuit details the experiences of Steve Kennedy. His path is one followed by many other veterans: the surfacing of his PTSD symptoms, attempts to self-medicate with alcohol, having suicidal thoughts, not seeking help because he’d seen how others became targets for seeking assistance. The final straw (his “misconduct”) came when Kennedy was denied leave to attend his wedding, even though that leave had been approved over a year earlier. He went AWOL.

When he returned he was sent to a psychologist, who misdiagnosed him in a single appointment and suggested he be discharged.

Kennedy was then sent to a psychiatrist, who gave him pills for two months but no treatment. Kennedy was then given a choice: join a new unit that was going back to Iraq -- or take a General discharge.

He made the decision to get out and seek help.

Eventually both Department of Veterans Affairs and civilian doctors diagnosed Kennedy with PTSD.

The enclosed mark is on a milk glass dresser set that has been in my family for close to 60 years. It was a wedding gift to my grandmother in the 1950s. I always admired it as a child, so when I married, she passed it along to me. The set consists of a covered powder dish, a covered pedestal dish, two perfume bottles and a matching tray. Each piece is decorated with blue flowers, pink roses and lavender bows.

The three potter y vases in this picture were given to my wife by her aunt. We believe they originally belonged to her grandparents. They are in graduating sizes and were made by William Brownfield Potter y in England. Each vase is decorated in relief with designs of blue ferns, yellow corn, blue twisted rope on the handle and gold trim. Marked on the bottom of each piece is a raised diamond shape with numbers and letters. Below the diamond is a knotted rope. Also, there is the handwritten number “12860” on each.

ed in Cobridge, Staffordshire, England, from 1850 to 1891. You have an example of a stoneware set of jugs or pitchers, rather than vases, and the pattern is “Fern.” The number included with the marks is a design number. The three-looped Stafford knot shaped like a pretzel was frequently used by multiple Staffordshire potteries. Its history can be traced to the Middle Ages, when it was used on early coats of arms. In the 19th century, it became a symbol of potteries in Staffordshire, and it is often used today. The diamond-shaped mark is a faux registration mark.

• The average American consumes a shocking 165 pounds of added sugar every year, but many have opted for artificial sweeteners, some of which are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar.

• The first sweetener was created in the labs of Johns Hopkins in the 1870s. Two researchers were working with coal tar by-products and were not the least bit interested in sweeteners.

But after working with the chemicals one of the researchers stepped out for a smoke. When he touched the tip of the cigarette with his tongue, he noticed that it tasted sweet. This curious discovery led them to take a new direction in search of chemical combinations that would create some type of artificial sweetener.

• Saccharin later became a common substitute for sugar, but surprisingly, not because of its low calories -- it was simply cheaper and easier to produce than natural sugar! Although studies in the early 1970s conducted on rats found a link between saccharin and a form of bladder cancer, real evidence was lacking that it caused cancer in humans. The most common trade name for saccharin today is Sweet ‘N Low.

Describing the downswing or approach to impact can be a difficult one to put into words.

There are few images that adequately illustrate the feels that one sees with top players. One image that has caught my attention over the years is the comparison of the left arm’s approach to impact like that of a karate chop into a board.

Martial artists will typically use a karate chop strike with the pinky pad side of the hand, not the back of the hand. Most blows are done downward, where the golf arm swing would be approaching from the side. Imagine the left arm swinging across the chest approaching the ball as if there were a board near impact. The pinky side pad leads the way with possible help from a leading elbow as well.

Trying to “hit the board with the back of the hand” means an early squaring of the clubface and a weak impact. All top powerful strikes are lead by the karate like action and then followed by forearm rotation. I’ve never liked the phrase “pull the handle” at the ball, so I’ve preferred this imagery instead.
