And you should be very concerned about how not making car payments for two months affected your credit score.

You need to do a couple of things right away. First, call your auto lender and see where you are and what you need to do to bring your loan current.

Next, find a buyer to purchase your car at its current market value. If you cannot come up with the difference between the sale price and the amount you owe in cash, find a way to borrow it from a family member or your credit union (your chances here may be diminished depending on your credit score).

Yes, you will have to make payments on this gap loan, but they will be considerably smaller than your current monthly payments.

In the future, wise up. Pay attention to your common sense when it suggests that something is too good to be true. I fear that it was this time. * * *

Medi-Cal, however, is designed to cover long-term custodial care. Medi-Cal is California’s version of the Medicaid program that is funded jointly by the state and federal governments. However, Medi-Cal is not an entitlement - you have to qualify to receive benefits.

Medi-Cal is a need-based program.

In order to qualify, you are limited to the following resource limits: ❑ Cash Reserve: applicant/beneficiary may retain up to $2,000 in liquid assets, e.g., savings, checking, excess cash surrender value of life insurance policies. ❑ Community Spouse Resource Allowance (CSRA): community (at-home) spouse may retain up to $120,900 in liquid assets, not including the home, IRAs and other exempt assets.

Most “middle-class” families are told they do not qualify for Medi-Cal because they have too much in assets. What they are not told is that they have a legal right to spend down excess assets to the $2,000 limit ($122,900 if married) in order to become eligible for Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal classifies property as “exempt” and “non-exempt.” Exempt property is not counted in determining eligibility. That means you could be a millionaire and still qualify for Medi-Cal, provided your excess assets are “exempt.” The real secret is how to convert “non-exempt” assets into “exempt” assets.

I am 68 years old and retired. My wife is 60 and still working. When I was 66, my financial planner advised me to “file and suspend” so that when my wife turns 62, she can claim spousal benefits on my record and let her own continue to grow until she is 70.

We are tr ying to maximize our Social Security.

But now I’m wondering if I did the right thing.

Can you explain the rules to me?

I am about to turn 66. I’m still working. My 64-year-old wife has been getting her own Social Security since she was 62. Can I file and suspend so that I can claim benefits on my wife’s record now and maximize my own retirement at age 70?

I got some relief from Botox for around four years, but then it stopped working and my doctor moved me to Dysport, which was horrible. I stopped the treatments and have been able to cope, until the past six months. I am almost unable to read, look at a computer screen or drive. Do you have any suggestions? I use Ativan to try to relax the stress of the blinking, but even that has lost its effect. I have been discouraged from getting a limited myectomy because of the risks. IG Uncovers Chaos at VA Medical Center

When the Department of Veterans Affairs issues a press release thanking the Office of Inspector General for a fast health care inspection on one of its medical facilities, you know it’s big stuff. Sure enough, the OIG found so many things wrong at the Washington, D.C. facility that it quickly issued an interim report so problems could be addressed immediately.

Here are some of the horrors the OIG found as a result of an initial anonymous tip:

Porcelain Vase Stars Grecian Maidens Q:

Enclosed is a photo of a porcelain Limoges vase that has been in our family for well over 50 years. It was given to a relative who had been assisting a dear friend. On the base is the mark “Limoges -- France” with a star in the center. The vase is hand-painted, and approximately 10 inches high and 9 inches wide. Each side is decorated with a young woman with blonde hair wearing a Grecian-like gown. Gold leaf is generously applied on the edges and both handles. It is in good condition; there are no chips or cracks, but there is some wear on the handles.

The mark you described was used by Latrille Freres. It produced porcelain in a factory in an old abbey in Limoges, France, from 1899 to 1913. Hand-painted porcelain decorated with classic scenes of ancient Greece was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

• The fulmar looks like a big seagull. Its name means “foul gull” because of its habit of vomiting on predators. The vomit is yellow, oily, smelly, and dries quickly. Once it’s dried on the feathers of a predatory bird, it greatly inhibits the bird’s ability to fly. The fulmar's vomit can be projected with precision accuracy.

A newly hatched fulmar just four days old can projectile vomit up to 18 inches, and mature birds can easily reach four times that distance.

Ospreys, eagles, and skuas trying to raid an unattended fulmar nest are showered with this repulsive goo and quickly learn to stay away.

• Most dogs instinctively mark their territory with squirts of urine. Hyenas in the Kalahari Desert do the same thing, but they use two types of oil excreted from glands in the anus.

One is a white paste that remains repulsively smelly for weeks. This is a chemical warning to other hyenas that the territory is spoken for.

The other is a black oily bead with a pungent odor that lasts for only a few hours. The latter is a message to other hyenas outside their clan that the area has recently been patrolled. If the black bead still stinks, other hyenas know it’s been visited recently and there’s probably no food around. If the smell is fading, they know it’s worth having another look around.

• The Sonoran coral snake and the western hooknose snake share two things in common: first, they are too small to scare away larger predators, and second, they have each developed a method of scaring them away by farting loudly. It’s not that the wind they produce smells bad, but that it’s so loud. The snakes use special muscles that compress a large pocket of air that they are able to force out suddenly when danger is near. The trumpeting flutterblast sounds like it came from a much larger and more imposing animal, and startled predators will quickly retreat.
